Nick is a Harvard trained psychiatrist who's developed a unique approach to managing ADHD without the use of some of the most common stimulant medications like Adderall or Ritalin. We chat about the explosion in prescribing stimulant medications during the pandemic and the rise of companies like Cerebral. The pros and cons of using stimulants to treat ADHD, the importance of developing executive functioning skills and not just relying on a medication. Again, we touch on the subject of temporary use of medication while working in therapy vs staying on meds long term, and why ADHD tends to fall into the latter with many patients taking a stimulant medication long term without working on any of the non-medication interventions that Nick describes. Lastly we talk in detail about Nick's clinical approach in working with patients with ADHD and the Bio, Psycho, Social interventions that he uses which can include; therapy, coaching, non stimulant medications, supplements, diet, exercise, sleep and more. ** Couple of points to note, in the intro I refer to Nick treating ADHD without the use of medication, this is not quite accurate.. As you'll hear he treats without controlled substances like stimulants or benzodiazepines, but he does use other medications like antidepressants. Nick also mis-quoted a book by Nick Norwitz's. The approach is called Medi-keto, not Ketotarian. https://a.co/d/j2ofBAQ Uncontrolled Substances: how tele-health company Cerebral set out to shake up the mental health industry and ended up under federal investigation. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5eKfXdhLOjl7mrfbq0jF7e  Nissen Clinic (Nick's private practice)

I would say focus on whole foods. Focus on nutrient density, and  have it be bioavailable nutrient dense food. Meaning foods that are high in nutrients, that's first and foremost when it comes to being healthy. .   Gut imbalance and shame are like hand in glove when it comes to being healthy according to Dr. Will Cole (@Dr. Will Cole). As a visionary in the health field he created one of the first functional medicine telehealth centers in the world. He is the author of Ketotarian, Intuitive Fasting, and Gut Feelings. He is one of the top 50 functional and integrative doctors in the nation and specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease.   Dr. Will Cole spent his earnings as a teenager on the latest superfood or herb that he was learning about. His passion and curiosity led him into the field of functional medicine where he is dedicated to demystifying how to get and stay healthy. Dr. Cole has a podcast, The Art of Being Well, where he explores a variety of diverse topics. His latest passion is finding the intimate relationship between our emotions and our gut health and how they affect one another.   “I think if you're getting enough from food, you don't really need many supplements, it's that simple.”  - Dr. Will Cole Ketogenic Diet: Eating Keto can be very beneficial, but it isn't for everyone. When you are eating ketogenically you want your diet to consume 65-75%fat. And this is good fats. The false belief that you can eat anything you want as long as you are in the correct percentage range of fat intake is incorrect and dangerous for your health.    Shame and Gut Health: It is becoming more and more clear that our emotional and mental states are directly affected by our gut health. And just like the saying what came first, the chicken or the egg, our emotional and mental states affect our gut health. Our bodies and beingness are interwoven and deeply connected. Living with shame is a leading cause for gut imbalance.   Organization and Intuitive Nutrition: If you can be organized and take time to test which foods, diet, and supplements work best to keep your body in harmony then you can start to let go of structures regarding diet and eat intuitively.   Western vs. Functional Medicine: One of the main differences between Western and Functional medicine is the way the doctors use your labs. Functional medicine focuses on you being compared to and living in optimal health.    Caldera + Lab! - As you age, you might notice more Fine Lines, Wrinkles and signs of Aging. It's time to take control of your skin with Caldera + Lab! Today, I am blessed to have here with me for the THIRD time Dr. Will Cole. He is a leading functional-medicine expert, consults people around the world via webcam and locally in Pittsburgh. This is a REPEAT EPISODE from May 2021. He specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease and customizing health programs for thyroid issues, autoimmune conditions, hormonal dysfunctions, digestive disorders, and brain problems. Dr. Cole was named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the nation and is a health expert and course instructor for the world's largest wellness brands such as mindbodygreen and goop. In this episode, Dr. Cole opens the show explaining the meaning behind intuitive fasting. If you're not metabolically flexible, fasting will be anything but intuitive. However, when you are finally metabolically flexible, you will intuitively fast and eat. Dr. Cole explains why he's such a massive fan of fasting for overall health and the ways fasting will help heal your gut. Later, Dr. Cole answers common questions regarding fasting, like if it will help you lose weight and why you can't fast when you're eating a poor diet. Tune in as we chat about our favorite supplements for fasting and how tea can be beneficial on your health journey. But the truth is, our daily eating schedule—three meals a day, plus snacks—does not necessarily reflect our bodies' natural cycles. Cole's book is all about intuitive fasting. However, fasting will be anything but intuitive when you're metabolically inflexible. Instead, the book is a conversation about showing up for yourself to become metabolically flexible. When you are finally metabolically flexible, you will intuitively fast and eat. You can mindfully use intermittent fasting to gain metabolic flexibility so you can hear what your body truly loves.   [05:25] Why Dr. Cole Is A Huge Fan Of Fasting For His Health Fasting is an amazing tool, and it's completely free. Plus, fasting is something that it's actually encoded in our DNA. Researchers estimate that our genetics haven't changed in 10,000 years. Your body is made to do so much. It's time to wake up the body's ability to heal itself and wake up the body's ability to calm inflammation. Sadly, we are living so out of alignment with our biochemistry that we put a lot of our body's healing capacity just to sleep. Fasting is a matter of letting our bodies remember what we were born with. Overall, fasting is an amazing tool that clinically really improves people's labs. [09:25] How Fasting Can Actually Heal Your Gut + Reset Your Digestive System Your microbiome is actually repairing through the night and recalibrating through the night. When you fast, it is calming down the inflammatory cascades that are going on. Also, fasting doesn't mean that you are cutting calories. Instead, you're eating the same number of foods, you're just eating in specific windows to give your body a little bit more of a fasting time than you normally would. The more often you can fast, you're going to be able to regenerate and repair the gut in a big way. Digesting food requires a lot of energy; so, you're giving your gut a break to not work on digesting food. [13:45] What Food Freedom Means To Dr. Cole Food peace is going longer without eating, not because it's restrictive - but because you can do it, and you feel great doing it. Also, food peace means you can break the fast when you want to. Intuitive fasting can be scary; it can be triggering for people that are addicted to food. Just because something's common doesn't necessarily mean it's normal – most people in the United States have a massive blood sugar problem. The traditional way that American's live their lives are, in many ways, self-harm; it's not self-respect at all. Food freedom is integrating things in your life that make you feel great. [17:55] The Combination Of Keto And Fasting Is A Total Game-Changer You can't fast your way out of a poor diet. Dr. Cole doesn't advocate for people to have these extreme approaches to fasting, where it's like an eating disorder disguised as a wellness practice. Fasting should be a tool that can actually heal your relationship with food, heal your relationship with your body, and actually heal your body. If you look at a lot of the research on intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet, you're going to see similar pathways explored because they're both supporting beta-Hydroxybutyrate. Keto is nutrient-dense and calorically rich foods that are very satiating and nourishing; it's going to make your intermittent fasting window easier. [24:00] Can You Teach Me How To Use Fasting To Lose Weight? Many people hear that fasting is connected with weight loss. However, it's essential to realize that fasting is the body repairing things. If you want to fast to lose weight, you need to shift your mindset. Instead, you have to get healthy to lose weight, not the other way around. Fasting has a lot more benefits than weight loss – you should be more excited about those aspects of fasting. [28:05] Dr. Cole Reveals His Favorite Supplements For Fasting Cole is a fan of having coffee and tea while he fasts. Earl Grey tea has been shown to support our autophagy pathways. The main supplement you'll want when fasting is electrolytes. Again, you can't fast your way out of a poor diet. If you're eating clean foods, you may not need those electrolytes. However, optimizing your electrolytes is something to consider. One of Dr. Cole's favorites is LMNT: https://drinklmnt.com/pages/robb-wolf [35:20] News Flash! You're Not A Failure If You Cut Your Fast Early When fasting, you need to have flexibility and intuition. If you cut your fast early, it's not a failure. Instead, it's a gift that you listened to your body. Changing your fasting plan is part of metabolic flexibility. We think there has to be this rigid plan for fasting to be successful; however, that's not how life works! [38:05] Stop Comparing Yourself To Other People On Your Health Journey We're all on our own journey with health – stop comparing your journey to another person. We're all created differently, and we're all up against something differently. Obviously, we're learning from other people. However, your path will be different. Communities should be there for insight rather than comparisons. You're on your own journey, you're going to do great, but in your own way. [43:55] The Truth About Autophagy: Are You Getting Too Much While Fasting? Constantly check in with yourself and see how you feel: Are you burnt out? Are you fatigued? Do you feel like you're starving? As long as you eat enough foods during your eating window, then you should be okay. However, if your body is saying otherwise, then eat! AND MUCH MORE!  Resources from this episode: Check out Dr. Cole's Website: https://drwillcole.com Follow Dr. Cole Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drwillcole/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorwillcole/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drwillcole YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCccrTmRLX_EPUGlUnRypuKg Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/drwillcoleinfo/ Order Intuitive Fasting®: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/059323233X/benazadi-20 Get The Inflammation Spectrum: https://www.amazon.com/Inflammation-Spectrum-Triggers-Reset-System/dp/0735220085/benazadi-20 Listen to Ketotarian, Calming Inflammation, Why Conventional Medicine Fails – Dr. Will Cole: KKP 003: https://ketokamp.libsyn.com/ketotarian-calming-inflammation-where-conventional-medicine-gets-it-wrong-dr-will-cole-kkp-003 Listen to Dr Will Cole | Which Foods Cause Inflammation? In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews her friend, New York-based jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher. The two met in New York, many moons ago, over a long dinner at Mr Chow's in Tribeca and had an instantaneous bond. Jennifer is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), a nominee for the 2020 and 2019 Accessory Designer of the Year at the annual CFDA Awards, a recipient of the 2018 Town & Country Jewelry Award for Retail Innovation, the 2016 Influencer of the Year at the annual Accessories Council Excellence (ACE) Awards and was a nominee for the CFDA Swarovski Accessories award in 2014. She speaks frequently about strategic leadership, brand building and empowering the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs.A long-time wardrobe stylist who grew up in California, Jennifer started making jewelry after her son Shane was born, which followed treatment for a tumor in her chest and several failed rounds of IVF. In their conversation, she tells Anne the story of creating that talisman, a special piece that became a powerful charm to mark the birth of her baby, and how it became a natural starting point for her brand. A born entrepreneur, Jennifer shares how at age five she was already selling caterpillar hair clips and button earrings to the local store. She also tells Anne how growing up, she watched her polo-playing, silversmith grandfather solder bolo ties and belt buckles, a likely inspiration for her own jewelry making. Of course they discuss business, too, including how Jennifer cultivates a positive mindset despite the stress of her career (especially in the last two years), and how she lets herself learn from things that don't work. The two also talk in depth about the way they eat, because Jennifer, a wonderful cook, recently launched a line of condiments, Jennifer Fisher Salt (the ultimate seasoning, as it's been dubbed by Goop). They also connect on the importance of making smarter choices when it comes to food and their personal reasons for that, too.  They finish by talking about Jennifer's latest venture, a new fragrance (which she describes is like a cookie on vacation!) and the wonderful partnership she has with Kevin, her husband, both at work and at home. An inspiring, joyful and very personal conversation. When traditional weightlifting requires you to reach 70-80% of your 1 repetition maximum to stimulate muscle hypertrophy, then Kaatsu bands achieve that effect only at 20-30%. So, it’s perfect for treating injuries or used when you don’t have access to heavier weights. Research about Kaatsu bands also shows it lowers blood pressure, speeds up recovery from injuries, releases stem cells, builds muscle, burns fat, and prevents age-related muscle loss. In this episode, Dr. Cole opens the show explaining the meaning behind intuitive fasting. If you’re not metabolically flexible, fasting will be anything but intuitive. However, when you are finally metabolically flexible, you will intuitively fast and eat. Dr. Cole explains why he’s such a massive fan of fasting for overall health and the ways fasting will help heal your gut. Later, Dr. Cole answers common questions regarding fasting, like if it will help you lose weight and why you can’t fast when you’re eating a poor diet. Tune in as we chat about our favorite supplements for fasting and how tea can be beneficial on your health journey. But the truth is, our daily eating schedule—three meals a day, plus snacks—does not necessarily reflect our bodies’ natural cycles. Cole’s book is all about intuitive fasting. It’s time to wake up the body's ability to heal itself and wake up the body's ability to calm inflammation. Also, fasting doesn’t mean that you are cutting calories. The traditional way that American’s live their lives are, in many ways, self-harm; it's not self-respect at all. Food freedom is integrating things in your life that make you feel great. [17:55] The Combination Of Keto And Fasting Is A Total Game-Changer You can’t fast your way out of a poor diet. Dr. Cole doesn’t advocate for people to have these extreme approaches to fasting, where it's like an eating disorder disguised as a wellness practice. The main supplement you’ll want when fasting is electrolytes. Again, you can’t fast your way out of a poor diet. If you’re eating clean foods, you may not need those electrolytes. However, optimizing your electrolytes is something to consider. One of Dr. Cole’s favorites is LMNT: https://drinklmnt.com/pages/robb-wolf [35:20] News Flash! You’re Not A Failure If You Cut Your Fast Early When fasting, you need to have flexibility and intuition. If you cut your fast early, it’s not a failure. Instead, it’s a gift that you listened to your body. Changing your fasting plan is part of metabolic flexibility. We think there has to be this rigid plan for fasting to be successful; however, that’s not how life works! Do you feel like you’re starving? As long as you eat enough foods during your eating window, then you should be okay. However, if your body is saying otherwise, then eat! After many years of working in a bank, earning what most would consider good money, but not enjoying a moment there, I have finally built up the courage to say no to work I hated and began my search for a career, that is fulfilling and meaningful. It started by looking for answers to my own health and weight issues. The following 2 decades led me down countless avenues, some by choice and some by chance. No matter how many changes I made in my personal and professional life there seemed to be one constant - my interest in food and health. These 2 worlds collided in a bad way during my first pregnancy when I gained 70 pounds! I didn't just gain weight, I became unhealthy. In search of answers and help, naturally I turned to my doctors and to traditional medicine. Years went by bouncing from specialist to specialist, without seeing any results. At the same time, I began exploring the healing power of food. I made a lot of improvements to my health by changing my diet. However, studying nutrition, I found a lot of contradictory information that made me confused, not sure whom to believe. It took me a while to realise that there is no “one size fits all” solution. It was a process of trial and error. Over time I've learned to listen to the feedback from my body. In my experience, changing my relationship with food was so much more powerful than I could imagine and I knew there was much more to learn. This led me to discover the Institute for the Psychology of Eating and in turn this gave me the opportunity to consolidate everything I learnt over the years. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when, at the start of 2019, I discovered that I have insulin resistance. My research into this problem led me to finding out about keto.At first, I didn't know much, if anything about keto, but for some reason I had a negative opinion of it. I remember first hearing about keto and thinking; I wouldn't and couldn't even eat like that. I also remember feeling that this was going to be another trendy diet here today and gone tomorrow. My opinion started to change when I began reading about reversing the causes of insulin resistance from some of the leading functional doctors in the field today. The amazing work of people such as Dr. Anna Cabeca and her book ‘The Hormone Fix' and Dr. Will Cole's ‘Ketotarian' started to open my eyes to the possibilities. I wasn't quite sold that easily but now I was listening, so with nothing to lose I decided to put their ideas into practise using myself and my insulin resistance as the test subject. As you can imagine I was blown away by the results and the ease with which my body became keto adapted. Just as impressive as the health benefits was the speed with which the weight came off, I wasn't obese to begin with but I was starting to believe that my slight excess in weight was just part of being a woman in her 60s, I was wrong!I was all in! I ordered a bunch of books on keto and quickly enrolled in a course with one of the leading names in the game, Dr. Berg. Now that I am a certified keto coach I can say something truly amazing; my clients are reporting the same amazing experiences as me!Website: www.greenmindfulketo.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/greenmindfulketoFacebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/ketoforbusypeopleover40LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/marijana-dragojevic-849b7b39

Welcome back to another special episode – this time welcoming my extraordinary guest and friend, the best-selling author of “Ketotarian,” “The Inflammation Spectrum,” and “Intuitive Fasting,” and the host of the new podcast: The Art of Being Well, Dr. Will Cole. In today's episode, we're joining forces to share and discuss his thoughts about the backlash he suffered against his book, Intuitive Fasting, and how he dealt with the criticism and harsh words he faced on social media. Through the story of what happened, I talk to Dr. Cole about what he has learned from the experience, and how we can deal with criticism and taking accountability versus accepting shame, or shaming, as any form of legitimate means for creating change.  Tune in as Dr. Cole speaks about the importance of compassion and acceptance and for his top tips to staying “in the arena” and delivering your best work and honest message - no matter what. In This Episode: [05:25] Dr. Cole talks about the backlash he received from his book, “Intuitive Fasting,” and how he achieved a place of real peace with and through the ordeal. [08:15] Learn about what Intuitive Fasting is, why it’s not restrictive, and how it can inspire you to listen to your body.   [12:20] Listen to the story of how Dr. Cole came to thank the people that tried to silence him because it just made his presence more firm and his reach farther-reaching.  [18:15] Dr. Cole and I help you deconstruct how you can choose which feedback to take and which feedback not to take. [24:15] Why you need to be flexing your mindfulness muscles every single day, and a few excellent ways to do so.    Key Takeaways: Root yourself in your intention. To rise above criticism, stay mindful and be gentle with yourself by recognizing if your intention was not to harm and was truly earnest. Shame feels like rejection. Social media shame feels like the possibility of collective rejection. You have to learn to identify this feeling and stop it in its tracks. To do so, first:  go inward and realize that nothing crazy is going on. That way, you can recognize that you will be okay and work through the details from a calm place.  Rely on a squad of people who have been in your shoes and can lend you a much greater perspective. Find the perspective of gratitude to ground yourself. Appreciation is like empathy: it dissolves the stinging effect of shame.

He is also the bestselling author of “Ketotarian,” “The Inflammation Spectrum,” and the upcoming book “Intuitive Fasting.” In this episode of The FM Shift, Dr. Cole joins us to share his story and talk about his telehealth practice model, and how it has enabled him to thrive during the pandemic. He also explains what you can do to successfully integrate telemedicine into your own practice. Operating a Telehealth Practice During the Pandemic By the time COVID reached its peak, Dr. Cole's practice was already conducting 90-95% of its consultations virtually. Some patients would fly or drive in for their first visit but after that, everything was carried out online. Since he chose to follow a telehealth practice model instead of building an operation that was predominantly reliant on brick and mortar services, the pandemic had a minimal effect on his business. Telehealth is how he is serving people now, and it's how he has always served people. This model offers tons of versatility and flexibility and it is something that we all need to adopt moving forward. A Pathway to Stability and Growth Dr. Cole did not anticipate a pandemic by any means, but the model he set up was able to bend and meld itself to withstand the extreme economic and regulatory conditions that are still in effect to this day. His telehealth practice has maintained healthy business growth, revenue streams, and patient enrollment in spite of everything that has taken place. If anything, the pandemic has provided an opportunity for potential functional medicine patients to take care of treatment-related tasks they have been putting off. Whether you implement a hybrid model or go all in, telehealth offers a pathway to stability and growth that many practices so desperately need right now. Not losing weight on Keto? You're following a Ketogenic diet and suddenly find your weight loss has stalled. What's the cause? Today I have Jessica Ancaya, from Holistic Keto Goddess here to answer all your questions about why you're not losing weight on keto and some unusual areas that might be blocking the path to success. "Unexpected areas that might hinder weight loss" is the topic of today's podcast episode which you can listen to in the player above or on iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify! What would we find in a Ketogenic Pantry? The first thing you should realize before beginning a keto diet is to feel good; you have to eat well! For your mitochondria to function at their best, you have to give them fuel. I am going to go through a rundown of what a holistic keto goddess should keep in her pantry. The foods that I will mention have so many benefits, both physically and mentally. Keto Pantry What is Ketotarian and do you follow that type of Ketogenic diet? Too much protein or cheese can be another reason why you are not losing weight on keto. In 2018, Dr. Will Cole wrote the book titled the Ketotarian. In his work, his objective was to show a clear path of exactly how to use food as medicine and optimize every system in your body 1. Using a noun, he defined Ketotarian as a ketogenic plant-based rock star! When analyzing the word as an adjective, Ketotarian is the amalgamation of delicious healthy fats and vegetable meals to optimize your metabolism, brain, hormones, and overall health. Merging the Gap Between Keto and Vegetarian More information on the Ketotarian lifestyle can be found in Dr. Will Cole's book Keto-tarian. Jessica's Ketotarian menu plan for one full week of healthy low-carb, high-fat meals is a great way to start of the ketogenic diet or to move you through a weight-loss stall. A vegan diet can create nutrient deficiencies but following Keto-tarian, eating more fish and less red meat can help with the B12 factor. Cycling Carbs - How do you do it and how often? If you are healthy, it may be of benefit your body to go ahead and increase your net carbs to a few times per week. Especially since there are certain complex carbs( not on the keto diet) that have beneficial nutrients for our body. This article will highlight the six things you should know about carb cycling on keto and will increase your confidence about going keto. What You Should Know About Carb Cycling Adding too many carbs to your diet and not watching your portion control can also be a factor that can prevent or stall weight loss. Intermittent Fasting - What is it? Who will it benefit and who should not do it? Consider intermittent fasting if you are not losing weight on keto, but only if you are in good health! Intermittent fasting gives your body a break from digestion and is a wonderful tool for improving health, healing mitochondria. Check with your doctor if you are pregnant, have adrenal fatigue, or another health condition. Some diabetics can use intermittent fasting but it's always best to check with your health care provider. For those with adrenal fatigue, we recommend the book by Dr. Jason Fung - The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting. Read Intermittent Fasting Benefits - Which should I start first IF or Keto or is it best to start at the same time? Jessica recommends starting with the Ketogenic diet before adding IF. Maria Emmerich's book The Keto Cleanse is the book I (Rebecca) used to kick-start my ketogenic diet a few years ago. I found that ditching dairy really made a difference in how quickly I could lose weight. Eating too much protein or cheese can kick you out of ketosis. When you eat too much protein it can convert or react similarly to eating carbohydrates, especially when you eat more protein than your body requires. Calculate your protein requirements using the formula in this post.
