More on dividend growth investing  -> Join our market newsletter!  Schedule a meeting with us ->  Financial Planning & Portfolio Management While it may be a somewhat misused paraphrase of Warren Buffet's famous baseball analogy, 'fat pitch' is a term often thrown around in investing circles. In most settings, it implies that an investment opportunity is extremely lucrative with a high probability of success—but they are rare. Beyond having the discipline to patiently wait for these opportunities, what does a 'fat pitch' actually look like?In this episode, Greg discusses the concept of 'fat pitches' by exploring the extraordinary long-term performance of Altria (formerly Philip Morris), despite numerous industry challenges and negative headlines. Through a detailed analysis of Altria's historical performance, including its high dividend yield and impressive cash flow management, he emphasizes the timeless principles of dividend growth, patient investing, and compounding. 00:00 Introduction to The Dividend Mailbox Podcast02:34 Review of Current Dividend Growth Performance and Market Observations06:13 Case Study: The Success of Philip Morris15:58 Key Takeaways from Philip Morris's Performance24:51 Lessons on Dividend Growth and Compounding32:14 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Send us a textBook time on our calendar here If you submit a question to us and we use it in an episode, we will send you an official The Dividend Mailbox Yeti® Tumbler -> Email us at ethan@growmydollar.com.Notes & Resources:DCM Investment Reports & ModelsVisit our website to learn more about our investment strategy and wealth management services.Follow us on:Instagram - Facebook - LinkedIn - TwitterIf you enjoy the show, we'd greatly appreciate it if you subscribe and leave a review

Lunchly vs. Lunchables | Crazy Connection to Lunchables History? | Hyper-Palatable Foods (HPFs)

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 9, 2024 12:04

After 35 years of dominating grade school cafeteria lunchtime, that yellow box filled with hyper-palatable foods is getting “remixed” by the creator packaged goods movement. For those that are living under a rock and didn't see the product announcement from a few weeks ago, Lunchly is a kid-friendly meal kit that's positioned as a better-for-you competitor to Lunchables. Now…there's already several other better-for-you Lunchables competitors in market, but what makes this one noteworthy is that it's a joint venture between two creator packaged goods brands. Lunchly was a collaboration between PRIME (the beverage brand backed by Logan Paul and KSI) and Feastables (the chocolate brand created by MrBeast). To be completely honest, this is a wild move. So, each box of Lunchly will include a miniature Feastables bar and bottle of PRIME Hydration. Lunchables created line extensions with Snickers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kool-Aid, and Capri Sun…but we're talking about two creator packaged goods brands that are co-creating a new “more perishable” product that also sees them both entering a new grocery retail section. So, then the question likely turns to why? Similar to when Lunchables was being developed in the 1980s, there's maybe the obvious and not so obvious answer. Based on the marketing angle taken thus far, the obvious answer is that Lunchly saw a market opportunity that paired all the previous (and still strong) Lunchables value propositions for parents (like convenience/value) and kids (like wanting to be cool in the school cafeteria), with these better-for-you product attributes. Regardless, Lunchables was actually created to solve a bologna oversupply (and popularity) problem for Oscar Meyer. And though I don't think anyone involved with Lunchly intentionally created this historical “remix,” PRIME is facing similar oversupply (and popularity) problems right now. According to recent NielsenIQ data reports, PRIME volume has been falling by somewhere around 30% YoY for much of this calendar year. But more interesting to the Lunchables connection is that PRIME has been the target of recent litigation from its supply chain partners…with lawsuits alleging dedicated contract manufacturing capacity investments left unutilized and coconut ingredients contracts cancelled. Additionally, my latest first principles thinking content will explore the historical connections between U.S. food companies by tobacco giants, how Phillip Morris (now Altria) were masters at engineering products to make consumers return for more, and how those hyper-palatable foods are now approved by the U.S. government (USDA) to be included within the National School Lunch Program. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comWhere do I get my story ideas? Most arise organically out of the news, but some come from topic suggestions aka “pitches.” Sometimes pitches come from lawyers in the news, and sometimes they come from a lawyer or law firm's public-relations or communications team—media-savvy professionals who work for attorneys and firms to help them secure favorable press (or avoid negative coverage).Over the years, one of my best sources of pitches has been Dawn Schneider. After graduating from law school, Dawn worked in communications for two major corporations, Johnson & Johnson and Altria. She then combined her legal and media expertise and pivoted to focus on law firms, serving as director of communications at Boies Schiller Flexner. And then, ten years ago this month, she launched her own media-advisory firm, Schneider Group Media—where she continues to work for leading lawyers and law firms, as well as clients beyond the legal realm, helping them navigate a challenging, rapidly evolving media landscape.I have a fair number of readers who are interested in “alternative careers”—roles that don't involve practicing law, but where legal education and experience are valuable. So I thought it would be enlightening and enjoyable to interview Dawn, who has deployed her legal training and talent for communication in a cool and unusual way. Thanks to Dawn for joining me, and congratulations to her on Schneider Group Media's tenth anniversary.Show Notes (Dawn doesn't have much of an online presence—she prefers to keep the focus on her clients—but here's her bio, as well as pieces I've written that resulted from her work):* Dawn Schneider bio, Schneider Group Media* On The Retirement Of Miles Ruthberg And The Rise Of Litigation At Latham & Watkins, by David Lat for Above the Law* A Leading Litigation Boutique Turns 25, by David Lat for Original Jurisdiction* Boies Schiller Star's Ski Accident Tests Strength—and Builds It, by David Lat for Bloomberg LawPrefer reading to listening? Welcome to Dividend Talk Episode 209, where we dive into the world of dividend investing to help you build a stable financial future. This episode, titled "Dividend Investing for Retirement: Building Your Own Pension," focuses on how dividend investing can be a cornerstone of your retirement strategy, offering both stability and growth during your golden years. We begin with the News of the Week, where the recent shake-up at Nestlé takes center stage. The sudden departure of the CEO has raised eyebrows, with limited information provided by the company. The abruptness of the move suggests it may not have been entirely voluntary. We discuss whether this could be tied to the competitive pressures Nestlé faces, particularly in contrast to Unilever's recent successes. Additionally, we explore Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, where he highlighted significant progress on inflation. Inflation is nearing the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and while the labor market has cooled, the economy remains resilient. Powell's cautious tone suggests potential policy adjustments on the horizon as the Fed seeks to balance inflation control with employment support. The episode continues with a review of Recent Dividend Hikes, which brought good news for dividend investors. ASR Nederland raised its interim 2024 dividend by 7.4%, pushing its forward yield to a substantial 6.55%. Altria increased its quarterly dividend by 4.1%, offering shareholders $1.02 per share, while Cboe Global Markets impressed with a 14.5% increase in its quarterly dividend, now at $0.63 per share. The Main Topic for this episode is "Dividend Investing for Retirement: Building Your Own Pension." We explore how dividend investing can serve as an effective retirement strategy. Traditional pensions offer tax benefits, but they vary significantly across Europe. For instance, in Ireland, pension fees can be high, and access to certain investment vehicles is limited. For those looking to retire early, building a personal dividend portfolio offers greater control and flexibility. In Poland, accounts like IKE and IKZE provide tax advantages, making them attractive for retirement savings. However, there's growing concern about whether future retirees will enjoy the same benefits as current retirees, given that pension funds are struggling to keep pace with inflation and increasing life expectancy. Dividend investing offers several key advantages for retirement. Dividends are often taxed more favorably than regular income, and they have the potential to grow faster than inflation, helping to preserve purchasing power. Additionally, dividends can provide a steady income stream, offering a cushion during economic downturns. We also discuss the importance of not relying solely on dividends in retirement. We consider the roles that bonds, life insurance, and real estate might play in a diversified retirement plan. Our hosts share their strategies, emphasizing the importance of sector and geographic diversification to ensure your portfolio can withstand different market conditions. As always, we wrap up the episode with Listener Questions. This week's questions are particularly insightful. One listener, Wolf of Harcourt Street, asks about the performance of his son's portfolio, which had previously been outperforming his own. It's a great example of how starting early in investing can lead to significant gains. Tim Ainley wonders how to weigh the opportunity cost of selling a stock against the benefits of compounding. Mike Nash, a beginner investor, asks for advice on how to choose which shares to monitor, a crucial step for anyone starting out. Hns de Jong shares his experience with preferred stocks like $GOODO, which offer a 7% yield, and asks if we hold any preferred stocks ourselves. Jack Jones discusses how buying Hershey stock influenced his shopping habits and asks if we've experienced similar shifts in brand loyalty after investing. We also touch on a few ticker-related questions. We look into Diploma plc, a British company with a solid dividend history, and Avnet, which some see as a strong mix of tech growth and dividends. We even explore the potential of luxury yacht stocks, like Italian Sea Group and San Lorenzo—an interesting niche within the luxury sector. Dividend Talk Episode 209 is packed with insights for both seasoned investors and those just starting out. Whether you're building your own pension, considering the impact of inflation, or simply looking for the next great dividend stock, this episode has something for everyone. C U on the inside! featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2605: Capri-Sun Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 22 June 2024 is Capri-Sun.Capri-Sun (UK: , US: ) is a brand of juice concentrate–based drinks manufactured by the German company Wild and regional licensees. Rudolf Wild invented the drink in 1969 and introduced it in West Germany as Capri-Sonne (a name retired in favor of the English name in 2017). It is now sold in over 100 countries, with licensees including Kraft Foods in the United States (as Capri Sun) and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in parts of Europe. It is one of the most popular juice brands in the world; as of 2023, roughly 6 billion pouches are sold per year globally.Since its launch, Capri-Sun has been packaged in laminated foil vacuum Doy-N-Pack pouches, with which the brand has become strongly associated. In the United States, these pouches predated the advent of Tetra Brik, in an era when fruit juice was usually sold in large containers. The pouch design has stayed largely the same, but changes in some markets have included transparent bottoms and paper straws, while other container types have been introduced for some products. Capri-Sun is available in varying ranges of flavors in different countries, targeting different national flavor profiles. Globally, its best-known flavor is Orange.Capri-Sun's main products are high in sugar content, although lower than many competitors. Characterizations of the juice drinks as "all-natural" have led to conflict in several countries between consumer advocates who highlight the high sugar content and low juice percentage and Capri-Sun and its licensees, who have generally maintained that the term correctly describes the ingredients. Disputes over sugar content and "all-natural" status have led to two lawsuits in the United States and the removal of the brand's main line from Tesco shelves in the United Kingdom. In France, Capri-Sun has figured prominently in rap songs and has been noted as a drink of choice in poor areas. Capri-Sun is often marketed to children, which has earned it a negative award from the consumer advocacy group Foodwatch. In the United States, Kraft and its former parent company, the tobacco conglomerate Philip Morris Cos. (now Altria), have successfully marketed Capri Sun using strategies developed for selling cigarettes to children. American parents often misidentify Capri Sun as healthy, and it is one of the most favorably rated brands among Generation Z Americans. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Saturday, 22 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Capri-Sun on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Justin Neural.

A study published in the journal Science Advances revealed that just five companies are responsible for 24% of all plastic waste worldwide. The Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research in California conducted the investigation, analysing plastic waste collected from 2018 to 2022. Among the more than 1.8 million pieces of waste gathered, over 900,000 had visible labelling, allowing experts to pinpoint that less than 60 companies are the main sources of global plastic waste. Coca-Cola, the largest contributor, was responsible for 11% of the total branded plastic pollution, followed by PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone, and Altria. Despite corporate claims of prioritising recycling, the escalating pollution levels suggest a discrepancy between their statements and reality, raising questions about the recyclability of plastics compared to materials such as glass and aluminium. https://todaysfocusofattention.com/5-companies-are-responsible-for-a-quarter-of-global-plastic-pollution/ Listen to the full episode...

Upon seeing Jesus' boat approach shore, he ran to Him. There Jesus cast out the demons, setting the man free.
