In this podcast, join me and my special guest musician, teacher, and composer Mischa Zupko for a conversation about music, the emotions, empathy, and community, originally broadcast live and in person on Wednesday June 3rd (2015) on VoiceAmerica Empowerment Radio. Mischa is an accomplished music teacher and composer. Music stimulates us to intense emotions, both high and low. Music sets the mood in movies. It stimulates buying behavior in ads. It relieves depression. It gets people dancing. Music can stimulate people with Parkinson's disease who cannot otherwise move. Stroke patients can sing words that they cannot otherwise say. Music is a powerful force for bringing people together into community. Music takes up more space in the brain than language does – being human means being musical. Empathy is no rumor in Mischa's compositions and performances. Empathy LIVEs in his work. Join me for an amazing conversation with musician, teacher, and composer Mischa Zupko. Despite the name, the foot isn't measured by or named after anyone's actual foot. Whether you think of it as 16 digits, 12 inches, 4 palms, two-thirds of a cubit, one-third of a yard, or one-sixth of a fathom, the foot has an interesting history, as do other strange Imperial units, such as the fathom and the furlong. Here are some resources to learn more about the history of Imperial units of distance:Zupko, Ronald Edward (1977). A Course in Miracles is leading us to awaken FROM the dream of this world, not just IN it. This episode is a replay of a gathering where we contemplated one of the deepest teachings of A Course in Miracles, the idea that the body does not have to die. The mind that projects the body can simply stop projecting it, so the body can leave through light instead of death. This is an idea that is not exclusive to A Course in Miracles. This session is co-facilitated by kironJ Gardner, Nouk Sanchez and Corinne Zupko. Each teacher begins with a brief sharing, we hold a silent contemplation on the idea, and then the session is opened for participants to share their experiences. My pet chickens have taught me some pretty amazing spiritual lessons. Over the past five years that I’ve had a flock, they have provided countless hours of free entertainment in addition to cultivating a lot of love. One particular chicken became my feather baby, and if you’ve been following me on social media, you will remember Miss Henrietta. She loved being carried around in my arms and she loved to sit in my lap. Henrietta was more like a dog than a chicken! She has always inspired joy in people. So when she passed away last spring, I was devastated. But after being reminded of the Course in Miracles teaching that “communication remains unbroken” even if the body no longer exists, I had an incredible experience of Henrietta coming to me to deliver a very uplifting message. I have not been the same since. I hope this story of Henrietta visiting me helps you in the same way it has helped me. We do not walk alone. I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Robert Rosenthal (aka Dr. Bob) to the show! In today’s episode we are discussing special versus holy relationships, a central teaching in A Course in Miracles (ACIM). Dr. Bob plays a very important role in the Course in Miracles community. He is the co-President of the Foundation for Inner Peace, the authorized publisher of the most widely distributed edition of ACIM. Dr. Bob was a psychiatrist in NJ for many years before retiring and taking on his role with the Foundation in California. You might recognize Dr. Bob’s name because it is on the cover of my book! He wrote the beautiful foreword. In this episode, Dr. Bob shares some insights and examples about special and holy relationships and we dive into the content in his latest book, “From Loving One to One Love: Transforming Relationships through A Course in Miracles.” DISCLAIMER: This show is for educational purposes only and is not to be construed as medical or mental health advice or treatment. When fear strikes, what happens to your posture? Typically, we shrink from fear and protect ourselves as our posture slumps. But today’s guest instinctively tried something different, which resulted in many miracles. I’m thrilled to welcome Natasha Black to the show. Natasha is a transformational coach, a mom, and a very dedicated student of A Course in Miracles. She truly lives its principles. In this episode, you’ll learn about Natasha’s healing experiences. These involved facing fear with Spirit, clearing out that fear, receiving abundance as a result, and realizing that as a result of all of her work, what previously angered her completely lost its charge. She could allow love and laughter to enter where there had previously been anger and frustration. What I love about this episode is that we’ll clearly see how much work Natasha has been putting into her spiritual studies, and how this has created amazing results in her life. I hope this episode inspires you to continue to do the work to remove blocks to love in your mind. Ultimately we’ll come to the recognition that the miracles were always there, and we don’t need to exert any effort at all to heal, because love is who we are. Do you ever freak yourself out about the health of your body? I know those feelings well. Fears surrounding the health of my body used to be my #1 anxiety trigger. Seriously, I mastered the pattern of being a hypochondriac! And if I did have a health symptom that warranted medical testing, I would be a HOT MESS until it was all over. Having been through this fear pattern so many times, and finally having had enough of it, I applied the same effort to unlearning this pattern through the teachings of A Course in Miracles. In this episode I share some helpful insights that you can use if you ever get freaked out about your health or if you are currently dealing with a health issue. These insights are from an article I wrote for Miracles Magazine called, “Course-Inspired Tools for Dealing with a Health Scare.” I’m happy to share the entire article with you through the show notes page. In this episode, I interview Andrea Owen, author of the amazing book, “How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t: 14 Habits That Are Holding You Back From Happiness.” The ego likes to hide. But it’s patterns can be easily spotted when we know what to look for. In this episode, we look at some common ego habits that people with anxiety may face. Andrea’s book is not about A Course in Miracles but it IS about 14 habits (in Course terms, EGO habits) that hold us back and how to overcome them. Andrea Owen is an author, mentor, and certified life coach who helps high-achieving women let go of perfectionism, control, and isolation to choose courage and confidence instead. She has helped thousands of women manage their inner-critic to create loving connections and live their most kick-ass life. In this episode, I interview Captain Tom Bunn, airline pilot turned social worker! As you may know, I used to have panic attacks AND I couldn’t fly on an airplane without my husband. During a flight I’d either need to be medicated OR I’d be white knuckling a meditation the whole time. That’s changed for me now because of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). I’m still shocked at how my fears of flying have fallen away. Tom’s approach to ending panic in ALL situations (not just flying) is based on legitimate scientific research and my hope is that his approach could help clear out any panic you’re having so you can continue to dive deep into ACIM and be the miracle worker that you are. Tom Bunn, LCSW, is the author of Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia, which is the result of his many years addressing flight panic in his role as an airline pilot. He is also a licensed therapist, regular contributor to Psychology Today, and a former U.S. Air Force captain who flew the Air Force’s first supersonic jet fighter, the F-100. "I AM SO. STRESSED. OUT.” While my husband was at work and listened to me complain on the phone, I sat in my car parked in front of my house, too cold to be out in my yard, unable to work with no internet and feeling displaced as workers filled my house with the smell of mold remediation chemicals. UGH! But a wonderful miracle was about to occur. Thank goodness A Course in Miracles has a much different view of stress than the way we tend to think of it. Stress provided a grand opportunity for healing and remembering the Truth (instead of me remaining a stressed out mess!). In this episode, I’ll share an awesome ACIM teaching on stress. Corinne Zupko is the author of From Anxiety To Love: A Radical New Approach for Letting Go of Fear and Finding Lasting Peace. Her journey with anxiety began at age two when she was diagnosed with separation anxiety. Her anxieties heightened in college and she found herself feeling like she was living an abnormal life. Everything changed when she read the book A Course In Miracles. After learning about the two parts of our mind, she was able to find solace from her anxiety attacks. Becoming aware of the fearful thought system in her mind, she realized that even if it may seem like the loudest thoughts in her head, there was always a stable place to lean on. The second thought system, the higher self, was there ready for her whenever she wanted to cut ties with the fearful system. This conversation with Corinne reminded me of the importance of our internal focus. If we only observe our fearful thoughts, we live in a constant state of fear. What would happen if we focused on the higher power thoughts? I immediately found that my higher power thoughts were happy to speak up and affirm to me that I was doing a great job and had nothing to fear. In this episode, Corinne and I talk about our experiences with anxiety attacks, how to calm yourself down when you are in the thick of one and why we need to be aware of the thought systems controlling our minds. Radically Vibrant Corinne The necessity of a respite from anxiety and fear in order to be able to have full control and awareness when it happens Learning about the fearful thought system and how it does not control your life, as long as you are aware it is there The importance of defining your fears and putting them on paper to gain your power back Radically Vibrant Clarity Finding a break from anxiety is necessary to help you be able to shift away from fearful living Trusting that after you ask for a miracle it will happen can shift your perception of your current situation Journaling is a tool that can help you go through difficult times and gain clarity on the situation Corinne Answers... What should you do if you’re in a space of anxiety? What is going on in our minds when anxiety and fear take over? What’s the first thing somebody should do to end their anxiety? Radically Loved Quotes “I like to refer to fear as a shapeshifter.” “Ultimately the respite from fear can only come from within.” “We need to know and notice that fear is happening and realize that as compelling as the anxiety is, it’s coming from the fearful part of my mind.” “This isn’t just about having a positive experience, it’s about realizing you’re greater than anything you could have ever imagined you were.” A Little More About Our Guest Corinne Zupko is a counselor, coach, professor and mindfulness instructor. Mindfulness is A Fresh Answer For AnxietyCorinne Zupko, a licensed counselor, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher undertook her study of psychology out of necessity when debilitating anxiety threatened to derail her life. Seeking ways to do more than temporarily alleviate her symptoms, Corinne began to study http://geni.us/cohen (A Course in Miracles (ACIM),) mindfulness meditation, and the latest therapeutic approaches for treating anxiety. As Corinne healed her mental anguish, she compiled the perception-shifting process she describes in her book http://geni.us/zupko (From Anxiety to Love: A Radical New Approach for Letting Go of Fear and Finding Lasting Peace) (New World Library, February 14, 2018). From Anxiety to Love helps readers learn to undo anxiety-based thinking by internalizing the teachings of ACIM, fostering mindful shifts in their thoughts and actions, and connections to their Inner Therapist. That profoundly gratifying, enormously comforting inner voice affirms our safe oneness with the universe rather than our ego's perception of danger and separation. Whether struggling with everyday stress or near-crippling discomfort, readers will find that Corinne's approach offers a new way of healing from — rather than just coping with — fear and anxiety.
