Is criticism overshadowing celebration in your parenting approach? Are you always swooping in to save your children from any discomfort? This episode breaks down why it's so tough for us to focus on the wins and the progress crucial for our children's growth and self-esteem, why we focus on happiness instead of resiliency, and other things we do backwards in parenting. This episode is a masterclass on what you can start doing today to cultivate more independence, resilience, happiness and self esteem in your children. [00:03:04] Self-criticism and parenting habits linked to emotional wounds; importance of changing negative mindset. [00:05:02] Encourage consistent effort, celebrate small wins, and avoid focusing on shortcomings. [00:09:30] We should celebrate kids' achievements, gain their trust, and keep our promises. [00:12:22] Parent struggles with bedtime routine and prioritizing self-care, but maintains promise to child with consequences for breaking trust. [00:17:50] Parenting should be based on building emotional resilience, not just making children happy. It's about helping them handle frustration, disappointment, and anger. [00:19:53] The focus should be on emotional resilience, not just happiness. Happiness comes from struggles and discomfort. Saving kids from challenges hinders their emotional growth and independence. [00:24:14] Setting up routines and structures can alleviate the mental load and help children become independent. Montessori method encourages allowing children to make mistakes to foster independence. [00:27:11] Setting them up to rely on you, feeling resentful of lack of independence, punishing them for mistakes, avoiding reflection and change, going back to old routines instead of adapting and sharing responsibilities. Finding Balance and Happiness in Parenthood With Misha Akbar

This week, I'm excited to bring you an episode where I was featured as a guest on Misha Akbar's podcast Desi Daze. In this episode, we go really deep into talking about the parts of motherhood hardly anyone talks about. There's a certain level of expectation that comes with how you believe you're going to feel when the baby finally arrives, and you believe you will be the happiest you're ever going to feel. I truly, truly believed with every ounce of my being that that's how my experience was going to be. In a sense, there is a grieving period when you become a mom because there is a loss of that old identity and we are grappling with this new identity and a loss of a previous life - with no time to process or time to grieve. Misha and I share a lot of commonalities in motherhood, and we both experienced postpartum depression. We discussed our struggles with that and the shame that we carried around about whether or not we connected with our babies and, how we seeked help and support. Both our missions are making this a topic that no woman should ever have to hide. What is one or two things that you are taking away? And was there anything in this episode that you heard that made you feel less alone? As our kids get older, a lot of us will inevitably face a situation where they make a mistake - stealing, vandalizing, cheating on a test, or worse! Which will lead you to question yourself as a parent and how you prepared them for the world. Facing every parent's worst nightmare without completely losing our cool, reacting defensively and launching into a lecture is not easy! It's a challenge to not immediately blame yourself. This situation actually can help to build a deeper emotional connection with your children, but you need to break your old cycle of blame, shame, judge and give out consequences without any time passing. This episode I lay out your new action plan to diffuse the situation, and actually connect with your child in this worse case scenario. Did your child ever do something that shocked you? How did you react? I would love to hear from you on what that situation was and how you dealt with it. When School Becomes Stressful: How to Navigate Your Child's Reluctance

When your child says that they don't want to go to school and they're making your life difficult, they're not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time and they need you. Whether your child has always had a difficult time with school or is suddenly experiencing anxiety about going, exploring the deeper reasons behind the resistance is the first step to and finding beneficial solutions for everyone involved. This is such a challenge in the moment to validate their feelings when you are heading out the door and they put on the brakes! No matter what it is, whatever your child is going through, it's valid. Just because you might not see it as a big problem does not mean that it's not a big problem for your child. As hard as it is, we have to believe them and take them at their word instead of negating their experience. Once you connect with your child and hear them, I have some real strategies on what you can do to help your child navigate their reluctance. I hope this helps you put together a plan on how you're going to tackle it with your own child based on their personality and the context of your life. Practical Strategies for Emotional Self Regulation as a Parent

I talk about our children's feelings, and how we work through connecting with them when they are in moments of stress and disregulation, but how do we learn to emotionally regulate ourselves? How do we stay calm when we are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, irritated or sad, with our own troubles or with our children's conflicts and problems? The steps to regulation seem simple, but they aren't always easy when we are in a place of disregulation. Our timelines to work through our feelings all look different and that's absolutely okay, and is part of our process to truly connect with and process our emotions. This episode gives you actionable steps you can do right at the time of triggering feelings, but also looks ahead to how you can care for yourself to be in a better state of emotional regulation as a baseline. The more we nourish ourselves, the safer it becomes for emotional regulation. Your child needs you to regulate yourself so that they can then find their center and calmness. My upcoming workshop is September 17th at 2pm EST - it's going to be designed to help you become the parent that you desire to be without all the conflict and the second guessing that you feel. This week I am bringing to you an episode where I was interviewed by another amazing podcast host, John Wang on his show - Big Asian Energy. He is an educator, speaker, a certified coach who specializes in working with Asian Americans on inner work, mindset and their communication skills. We unpacked how Asian culture makes us believe that our worth is solely tied to our achievements and productivity and seeking approval from our family and superiors. We start to believe that our value is measured through external validation and what others think of us. Then this belief system leads to self doubt and a disconnection from our true selves. We did a dive deep into inner child work, the emotional wounds that we incur as children and how breathwork can really free us of this experience and the narratives we tell ourselves that we can step into our truest, biggest versions of ourselves. 10 Ways to Raise Happier Children

A lot of us make the mistake that happiness is when there are no problems in life. I know I certainly used to fall into that bucket, and I believed I would be happy when all my problems disparaged and I had everything I desired. But re-framing happiness to be more than just a destination, we see that happiness visits us quite often in life. If you want to be happy, it's about focusing on building many, many, many moments of joy and cultivating a positive mindset - not just positive thoughts. but an overall positive mindset where you feel like life is working out for you - you believe that the challenges that you face in life are there to serve you. If we believe that the challenges and the setbacks we have in life are out to get us, then we are forever going to be struggling in life. I believe I definitely am building my children up to be overall happier in life. My parenting has changed, and I have changed, and cultivating happiness is a tremendous part of this process. You can integrate one or two of these ideas and it's going to help not only you, but your kids as well, and create an overall incredible environment for them to be happy. Why Consequences Should be your Very Last Resort to Correctt or Change your Children's Behaviour

This fantastic discussion came up during a connection call with a potential client - she mentioned that she had been using consequences with her child without much success, and by the end of the call she wanted to know what she could do instead. From my personal experience, I found that consequences stopped working as well as my children grew. Consequences did work, they had an immediate reaction and corrected the behaviour, but at what cost? They often leaves your child feeling ashamed and really angry and disconnected from you - when often the behavior that you're trying to correct and the discipline you're trying to instill is a cry for connection and attention. For a child looking for connection, consequences push them even further away, exactly what we don't want do! I have 10 suggestions for other ways you can correct unwanted behaviours - we want to use consequences as our very last resort and there are a lot of options for other ways to help our child understand what behaviour we are looking for. Which of these methods will you use the next time you usually would have given out consequence? Top 5 Takeaways from Barbie Movie

This week, I enjoyed taking my oldest son out for dinner, the bookstore, and a movie. My husband and I have been intentional about creating 1:1 time with each child, it's a great way to form connections and really just make them feel really special. As we shopped, my son told me about so many of the books he had read, and about the plots, it was just so cool to speak to him on that level. It was interesting taking a 13-year-old boy to see Barbie, he had picked it, and I didn't quite know what I was walking into, unlike a lot of other movie trailers, it gave nothing away other than the fact that it was about Barbie. This whole episode is about what I took away from the Barbie movie. So, just a heads up, there are going to be spoilers. So, if you plan on watching it and don't want any spoilers, then come back to it after you've seen the movie! I was really happy that I was able to take my teen boy to see this, even though a lot of the topics might have gone over his head. I was so proud that I took him so that he could be exposed to the very real problems that women face in this world - the inequalities, the fears that we face on a daily basis that men don't have to, the pressures that we carry. He got an introduction to that, and we talked about it afterward. And it is my job to curate and expose him to as many different ideas as possible and help him to critically think about things. Now, I don't know that I'm doing a fabulous job of this, but I'm doing it messily. I'm doing it imperfectly, right? And I'm doing it very differently from what my parents did. I would love to hear from you if you watched the Barbie movie and what you thought about it! I want to invite you to book a call a free one-on-one call with me right now. Conscious Parenting as a Grounded Parent - Why "gentle" parenting is not the same

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2023 34:05

I'm moving away from the term gentle parenting and using the terms conscious parenting or grounded parent. The word can put people off, because they might have certain not-so-helpful connotations attached to the word gentle. This all comes back to our own mindset - words have stories and deeper meanings and stories associated with them. The belief in what gentle means and if we can embody that meaning is just putting too high of expectations on people who are new to thinking about being a different parent. No one is a perfect parent. Being a conscious parent means you are aware of your emotions, rather than accepting the default of being only gentle, and the more we work on ourselves, the better version of us shows up for our children, and ourselves. We connected several years ago when she was looking for a life coach, and I am so excited to share her recent experience and her self-reflection on her personal development over the last few years. When we started working together, she was not trusting her intuition and felt an internal need to be a little more mindful about how she was curating her life. She felt reactive and that she was allowing circumstances to dictate her next steps as opposed to articulating what she wanted and curating a life accordingly. She just recently undertook the massive challenge - 29029 Everesting, and her experience was so profound. She shares the determination, self-trust and acceptance, and sheer grit she had to complete the challenge. By trusting in herself, being so confident, and hearing her inner voice so strongly, as she completed her climbs she had tremendous revelations about her own strength of mind and her body, leaving her with newfound clarity and true freedom. I have been really challenging myself to allow my kids to make mistakes, as long as it doesn't affect them physically or in an adversely mental way. There is a lot they can learn through their own process to find their own answers. Now that I follow the values of gentle parenting and conscious parenting, I still really have a hard time guiding them and supporting them through this process without nagging or projecting my own feelings. I left you on a cliffhanger last week, with the first half of the workshop. If you missed it, you can tune in to episode 114 but just to recap what was discussed: Step 1 - Learn to say more yeses to your kids. Kids don't listen to boundaries or respect boundaries or are very defiant of the rules and boundaries that we set. We end up repeating ourselves multiple times - because they feel really limited and have very little control over their life. One of the very few ways that they exert control is by not listening to us or ignoring us or refusing our wishes. One of the ways that we circumvent this is not by coming down harder on them, but by learning to say more yeses throughout the day so that the important boundaries and rules do stick and they feel more empowered. We want to create lots of opportunities for them to feel empowered during the day. So if you want to learn more about that, go back and listen to episode 114. And then I left you wondering how to create more connection with your kids, because connection is not created through spending more time, but it's by being more present. This workshop was created in celebration of my brand new program, the Grounded Parent, and if you're listening to this before June 2nd, you still have time to join us, and I look forward to serving you. https://visalakshi.kartra.com/page/thegroundedparent Sign up for FREE live breathwork sessions here Set up a free consultation call to work with me privately here Send me a DM on Instagram HERE

We live in a lot of fear - fear we are too harsh, fear we aren't harsh enough. It is impossible to be the perfect parent 24/7 - It's an unrealistic expectation, and you are setting yourself up to fail. In this episode we dig into how being the parent that course corrects and takes responsibility for your imperfections is the key to being the parent you have always wanted to be, and how you can start today by validating your child's feelings and giving yourself grace. 5 Most Common Parenting Myths

In this episode I waste no time getting right into 5 of the most common parenting myths I hear from my clients - and what you can do to shift your thinking to truly connect with your kids, embrace the conflict, and focus on the quality of our connection with our kids. Many people believe parenting is about changing their child- but if you have ever tried to change another person, you know it's an uphill battle! Parenting feels exhausting and draining if you try to get your kid to change. There is just so much out of our control as parents - especially as our kids start to get older, pull away from us, exert their independence, and push their boundaries. Our relationship changes as they grow, when they are young they depend on us so much, but it's impossible to expect our kids to be happy all the time -no human is happy all the time and we wouldn't expect that of ourselves. By focusing on our own healing, the more present we can be - The easier parenting becomes and the more connected you will feel to your children. That's how this all works! I would love to know - which myth you believed in your parenting? This is being covered in my brand new program, the Grounded Parent, which I am so beyond excited about. Fully Committing to Achieve Big Goals - Even When it Gets Hard

Earlier this year, I had some scary news about my Lupus impacting my liver, and I have been following a raw vegan diet for the last 6 weeks to support my health. This has been one of the hardest things I have done in my life. We had a busy month with family members visiting, events, traveling, and making the diet work has been challenging. Some weeks have felt more challenging than others! I wanted to share with you some lessons on what I have learned as to why we struggle when we have made a commitment to something and we know it's the best thing for us, and yet we tend to self-sabotage or we have a really hard time fully committing to it even though we know it's ultimately the best for us. How do we achieve those big goals? What happens when the sparkle of starting wears off? What is the difference between being 99% committed and 100% committed? I have done some hard things in my life and I keep doing hard things because when we do hard things, it makes us better - it's good to do hard things and maximize our potential. My clients want to have great relationships with their children, where their kids feel open to being vulnerable and speaking their minds. They want to truly connect with each other. It's been almost a year since I interviewed my oldest son, Arya on the podcast and a lot has changed for him! This week we talk about big changes and challenges he's overcome in school, as well as achieving his long-term goal of saving to buy all the parts to build his own computer.  He has some tremendous wisdom about embracing the journey of achieving a big goal, and even though I know he is wise beyond his years, he still surprised me with his perspective!  He has some excellent advice about staying focused when others around you are distracted or disruptive.  We talked about things that have been a pleasant surprise in school, improvements in our parent-child relationships, and some places he feels could use some work. Sometimes it's tough to hear as a parent, but I am so grateful for our connected relationship and that we can have these conversations, I'm always growing as a parent! Has your parenting been focusing on trying to change your child? Gentle parenting techniques? That's all well and good but the hardest thing in the world is to try to change somebody else! Trying to change a child's behaviour is one of the hardest, most frustrating things that you can venture, and it leaves both of you feeling exhausted. Imagine if your spouse worked on changing you every day! My new program, The Grounded Parent, was created as a result of me helping myself feel more connected to my children and working with many, many, many clients over the last six years on themselves and seeing how much closer they feel to their own children at the end of our work together. This episode walks you through the 3 phases of becoming a grounded parent - focusing on you. The more I work on myself and get clear on who I am, what my values are, and especially how I find my own answers, rather than getting answers from others, I am able to help my children in the same way. One of the main problems that all my clients come to me with is wishing they could be more present and patient. They feel terrible when they lose their temper with their children when they don't mean to, but the stress of work and the stress of life tends to get to them or they find themselves trying to shape their kids into someone they think they should be. This program is different because I don't focus on changing your child. I help focus on changing yourself. Instead of focus on changing your child to bridge the gap between the two of you, you focus on what needs to change within yourself so that you can feel closer to your child and create space and connection with them. I was never proud of the way I parented but I never really questioned it. A lot of us don't ever question why we do the things we do, it's automatic. It was how I had been parented. I had to decide what being a better parent meant to me. The more I connect with myself through breathwork, the clearer I become on who I am and what is important to me. I believe breathwork is a must-have for every single parent, and we are not here to mold our children into who we think they ought to be. We are here to allow our children to become who they came here to be, and it's our job to guide them. Allowing breathwork to heal my triggers and my fears allows me to be a guide for them instead of a disciplinarian. When we are disciplinarians, we believe we have all the answers. When you are your more embodied self, you have the space and the ability and the capacity to help them become their best self and allow space for them to figure it out on their own. You have to decide that you are doing it and leave no room for doubt." I was diagnosed with Lupus 18 years ago and despite having a chronic illness, I've been living very successfully. I have had dark times with my diagnosis, both mentally and physically, and have followed a diet protocol in the past. Recently I had a wake-up call about my kidney health - I needed to start turning things around and research shows amazing results with what some might call an extreme diet. The #1 skill parents need to teach their kids to thrive in life

I'm excited to bring to you an episode based on a video that's gone viral on my TikTok account - I asked, what is the number one skill that parents need to teach their kids in life to thrive in life? When I made this video, I had no idea that it was going to be so popular, and it feels important to dive deeper into the topic to bring you more value, nuance, and context because it resonated so deeply with people. So what is the number one skill? it's not confidence, it's not willpower, it's not perseverance, it's not, not even kindness. Maybe you can disagree with me on that one, but I truly believe that the number one skill that we need to teach not only our kids, but ourselves is emotional resilience. And you might be wondering, what is emotional resilience? It's the capacity and the ability to feel all our emotions, and then process them in a healthy way, and release them in a healthy way. I believe that so many of the world's problems all start with the individual because we don't have the capacity or the ability to handle our emotions. But how do we teach our kids if we don't know how to do this for ourselves? This is absolutely possible for you and your family! Tune in to find out how. Uncovering Trauma - Deep insight from Dr. Gabor Maté and Prince Harry

Trauma is what happens inside of you as a result of what happened to you but we all of us think of trauma as the thing that happened to us, the external event. Dr. Gabor Maté, a leading trauma specialist, recently sat down with Prince Harry to discuss trauma, but in a way that we don't always think about, and this episode is all about that. I attended a live virtual event of their discussion - and I wanted a replay but I had so many takeaways. When we think of trauma, we think of "big T" trauma - things so devastating to our lives that it changes the course of our life. But the Little T Trauma is what everyone has, and it isn't what happened to you, it's what happened to you as a result of what happened to you. A lot of my clients come to me aware and struggling that they're not the type of parents they want to be with their children. They don't mean to yell, they don't mean to be impatient with them. They don't mean to pressure them. but because of the little t trauma, children, maybe we felt that we had to work hard in a certain way to prove ourselves to our parents, and we have unconscious expectations of our own children. Prince Harry shares examples of his own experiences with his unprocessed trauma and how it affected him and how he worked through holding onto his pain and trauma. This interview and this episode are potent reminders that we all need to release our trauma on a daily basis, Things happen to us every day, but without healing the deeper long-term trauma, it's, it's much harder to release the short-term stuff that's happening. Your breath has the ability to change and transform you, not only in the present moment but also in your entire life. Many people are familiar with calming breaths designed to help bring you from a very nervous state to a very relaxed state. That's one aspect of breathwork, but the other end of the spectrum is very specific breathwork, so you can tap into a deeper conscious meditative state. This is not calm breathing. This is putting your body under specific duress with a very specific intention. It's not to simply stress you out, but it's to help you get deep into your body so you can tap into areas that you could never tap into on a conscious level, and there are very specific breath work patterns that help you tap into the sympathetic nervous system, as well as the parasympathetic nervous system. In this episode, I share five specific areas of my life made exponentially better through breathwork. Let me know which one surprised you! Your breath is the medicine your body and your mind needs. You forgive for yourself, but my perspective on do we need to forgive has changed. And a side note, it is totally okay to change your mind! The person was trying to move past being hurt and asked "How do I forgive someone?" The bigger question is - "Do I need to forgive them?" In the past, I would've said yes. Forgiveness is amazing for you. Don't do forgiveness for the other person. You don't forgive the person to let them off the hook. My answer now is no, forgiveness is a choice and you don't have to be powerless in saying, I can't move on unless I choose to forgive somebody, and that really empowers you. Time does not heal all wounds. You might release it from your memory, but the emotions are actually embedded in your body. There are four steps to work through to move on and I break them down and share the process in this episode, allowing you to move through what happened, let go, and now process that event in an empowering way. How to Break a Negative Thought Loop

How do you stop a negative thought from spiraling out of control? You might feel it start and before you know it, you're going down a rabbit hole that you can't seem to dig yourself out of - feeling worse and worse and worse. A client asked me this question on voxer this week and I have three different levels of how to break your negative thoughts, each depending on what stage of your personal development journey you're at, starting with beginner, intermediate, and then advanced. You can use any one of them! And they build on each other. For beginners, the most common answer is to replace the negative thought with a more positive thought. This is where I started and there is no shame in this. This is a surface-level tool. We're not truly addressing what's happening beneath the thought, which is why replacing a negative thought with a positive thought or a positive affirmation just doesn't quite hit the spot, but we all start somewhere. It's a big shift and requires a lot of energy to shift from feeling really really bad to now thinking a thought that will hopefully make you feel really really good, so I would use a stair-stepping effort by thinking slightly more positive thoughts rather than moving from one extreme to another, which also leads to the intermediate step. Tune into the episode and hear how the next two strategies work and how to implement them to stop a negative spiral. Ready and Committed - How 2023 is a year for intentions and growth

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2023 27:44

This week I am excited to share the things I am putting in place for 2023. I am not a big fan of New Year's resolutions, but this year I'm picking areas of my life that I really want to focus on and setting an overarching intention. I really let my workouts disappear. I've been focused on eating, but I have stopped moving my body and I'm starting to notice the effects of it. When I did the Everest Challenge, I really did push myself and I was training but once the challenge was done, it's like I literally fell off a cliff in terms of my physical health and I haven't really done anything. My husband and I signed up with a training company and even so far it has been a shift and the first week has been intense! And right now it does feel like this physical workout plan has taken up all my mental capacity, and that's okay. It's really uncomfortable and I'm not enjoying certain aspects of it. But that's what it means to be committed and bring change into your life. Bringing transformation into your life especially requires intense growth. And you cannot have intense growth without intense discomfort. Comfort and growth cannot exist like symbiotically, right? As well, I'm focused on relationships, especially my marriage. Nothing's wrong with our marriage, but I feel like we are in that phase of our life where our kids are almost teen and they require a lot of our time and attention. My husband and I are a very strong team and we are a very strong couple, but I've also noticed that we are not being intentional about connecting with each other. We've decided to set up an ongoing weekly date and have very intentional questions that I want us to ask each other. I've also decided that I want to start sending random texts to people and building intentional connections with the most important people in my life. I need to put a number around this because it's too vague in general right now, but I want the important people in my life to know that I'm thinking about them. And in my business, I realized that I have been having a self-sabotaging pattern, thanks to my coach and a really difficult conversation where we came back to how important it is to stick to things and that I know what works. It delivers the results that clients need and want. So I'm just going to keep doing more of it. There are times in our careers when we all lack self-belief. I was used to avoiding and distracting by doing something new and following the next shiny new thing in my business instead of doubling down and going deeper. And this is why it is so valuable to invest in an expert to help you in any area of your life that's really important to you. For me, that expert is essential to hold me to my commitment when I want to quit, in both personal development and business. it's very normal to want to quit. Everybody wants to quit at some point when things get really, really, really challenging. Right? , and that's normal. Like you're not a failure. You are not weak for wanting to quit, but how you overcome that is what determines your success or your lack of success.| What are your intentions this year? With every start of the new year, we are all human and we want to start with a clean slate. Or if you had a fantastic 2022, we want to take it up a notch and accomplish even more things. What better way than using the law of attraction and manifesting to your advantage - so you are creating more of what you want in this life and less of the things that you don't want. Most of us focus on the problems in our lives and the things that are not going our way. The law of attraction simply states that whatever you focus on tends to grow, and whatever you tend to pour your energy into, you tend to get more off. Now, I don't want you to panic! So listen to this episode - you're going to get a lot of really useful tips on how I have really honed the power of manifesting in recent years. This does take practice - no one gets really, really good right at the beginning. If you have given up on the idea of attracting and manifesting. - this episode is perfect for you, and if this is the first time you're hearing about it, this is is perfect for you. I wish you a wonderful 2023! DO make sure that what you're asking the Universe for is something that you truly, truly desire. DO ask. DO fully expect to receive the thing you ask for. DO detach from the outcome. DO let the Universe do its job, no matter how big the ask. DO feel as if you have it already. DON'T be vague. DON'T flip-flop. DON'T constantly question the Universe. These are two people who have their own side of the story, and all we do is interpret that story through our own lived experience. People have really, strong opinions on what they have done, it's very divided! There are people that hate them for it. There are people who love them for it. I have so much sympathy and empathy for this couple who are fighting for love. (I'm Team Megan and Harry) I had so many takeaways from watching the documentary through my life coach lens - In this episode, we discuss depression, how to ask for help, and not shaming ourselves because we might look at ourselves and think that we are weak and vulnerable. Gaslighting, the patriarchy. How you need to be the black sheep of the family if you are like breaking generational trauma cycles. This is a perfect demonstration that it is impossible to please everyone around you. A reminder for us is that all you can do is live your life by what is true to you. If you live your life to impress others and please others, you will literally have your soul sucked dry because that's what Megan tried to do with no success at all. The royal family ignores controversy, they pick safe charities, and they do not talk about their problems. When controversy happens they don't explain themselves and hope it'll just go away. The bullying by the media was so bad that it was affecting her well-being, and no matter what she did, she couldn't win. And so the royal family did not protect her the same way that the royal family did not protect Diana. Their move to the USA was to break the generational trauma and have the courage. Harry had to say - "no more of this, I will not let my wife be fed to the wolves the same way that my mother was." Their move was to create a way to live in their truth and their journey from fairytale to nightmare to finally find their happy ending. What a story to inspire others to start living your truth. Start living to please yourself, because if you live life to please. If you forget who the heck you are and what you stand for, what your values are, you make your own self disappear by living a life for others and not your true self. The way you get back to your life force energy is to be exactly who you are, and sometimes that journey can be difficult. Oftentimes I ask my clients, well, what do you want? And they don't know. It's not that they'll never know, it's just they haven't spent enough time asking themselves that question of what lights them up from the inside, what excites them, what brings them joy. They've been so busy making sure that everyone on in their circle is really pleased with them, that they're not upsetting anyone. That's been their sole focus, and they've forgotten that their sole focus needs to be taking care of themselves. I hope you enjoyed today's a little more unusual podcast. Did you watch the documentary? What was your takeaway? I would love to hear from you! Four Reasons Mindset Work Alone is Not Enough and How to Tap into your Complete Self

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2022 38:33

I did mindset work for a long time, and it worked for a short while and helped me get started on my transformation journey, but very quickly I realized it would only take me so far. I shared some thoughts about this on instagram and people definitely felt uncomfortable with my position on mindest work! Mindset work addresses your conscious thoughts and beliefs. Most of us don't even question the beliefs and thoughts we have, and these thoughts are only the ones you have been able to excavate and bring to the surface, until now you've just thought the things you've always thought and assumed it was real. Money is hard to make, I am fat, I am ugly. I don't have confidence. Things like that don't happen to people like me. I'm not special enough. I'm not clever enough. These are all thoughts and beliefs. Challenging these painful beliefs happens when the pain that comes from staying the same becomes bigger than the pain that comes from changing. Both things are painful. Changing is painful, but the scales start to tip and change is the less painful choice. Mindset work only addresses conscious thoughts and beliefs, and we have about 90,000 thoughts a day, and we are conscious of maybe about 5%. We go through 3 stages to come to terms with these thoughts. At first, we have no idea of all the thoughts and beliefs we have. We go about everyday life and it feels like everything is happening to us. Then we start to realize there are some thoughts and beliefs that are not serving us, but we have no idea how to change them. Lastly, we desire to work on what we believe because that is now creating our reality. But if we just did mindset work alone, its only addressing that small percentage of the thoughts that actually bubble up to our awareness. Your mind does not like change and will look for reasons to quit. Even if the status quo is deeply, deeply uncomfortable, it's a status quo that it's used to. It's found coping mechanisms to live with what's happening in your life. There's a part of your mind that's saying, I want success. I want visibility. I want confidence. I want to be more connected to the people around me. And then there's also a part of your mind that says, well, you can't have any of that. Who do you think you are? With mindset work, you are trying to change your beliefs and thoughts through sheer willpower. When you do mindset work to overcome the belief that money is hard to make, you can decide to make the conscious change to start believing money is easy to make instead, it's the flip side of your current belief, and it is the goal you actually want to achieve. But your nervous system actually feels calmer when you say the belief that money is hard to make compared to when you say money is really easy to make. There is some discomfort in that statement. There's some misalignment. Your nervous system probably feels a little bit activated at the thought. Your body and the nervous system are where 95% of your programming reside. Your body is your subconscious mind and it controls your actions. True transformation is when you integrate change within the mind and the body. The body has to accept the change that you're trying to make. The body has to decide, I am worthy of receiving this version of myself. I am worthy of revealing this version of me. And tapping into this wholeness that we have inside all of us. This complete version of us. Saying Yes, Overcoming Fears and Experiencing Anger and Forgiveness with Ashwin

"Anger doesn't make us terrible people. Anger just means we react in ways where we are not proud of ourselves." This week's guest is my youngest son, Ashwin. He is incredibly considerate, thoughtful and so expressive. I love how he knows what he wants, sticks to it, and has his own opinion. Nobody is changing his mind! He surprised me with a few of his answers today. We were able to discuss anger with honesty and self-forgiveness and reflect on how far he's come to work through angry feelings and understand them better. It's hard sometimes to manage our emotions, and we were able to recognize that the amount of time he has stayed angry has decreased, and I am very, very proud of him for working through his anger and being where we are today. We talked about some of our favorite things about each other, this is such a fun exercise to connect and share our love. I asked a big question - What did he think I needed to work on more? He felt like I said no a lot! I will definitely work on saying yes more often. He shared his ambitious goal and I have my own fear of what could happen, but I want him to express himself. Instead of saying a straight yes, we agreed that he could work towards this by accomplishing a reading goal for 2 weeks in a row. I will have to update you in a few weeks to recount his progress! Facing the fear of Investing in Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2022 33:04

When a potential client is scared to take that next step and invest in themselves, it has nothing to do with me or the program or the structure or the logistics of the program itself. There are very real fears inside that stop them from saying yes. The more I confront the fear, the more I help my audience understand like what's getting in the way of maximizing their potentia and happiness. The more awareness and the more conversations we have around this, the less mystery there is, the less of a black box we create around it, and there is less fear. To invest in yourself means that you're investing in your own potential. We are familiar with the traditional forms of investing in ourselves, like getting education or furthering our careers. We are applauded and encouraged to invest in ourselves in that way. But rather than these external investments with very tangible achievements like a degree, I'm focusing on the investment in inner work and investment in your own potential, your happiness, your confidence, and your inner power. We are told time and time and time again that if we invest in the external, the internal will take care of, but it's actually the other way around. It's when you take care of the internal, that the external takes care of itself. Ultimately we are trying to answer an internal question by chasing after external things. And a lot of us, even when we get the external thing, it still doesn't fulfill the internal answer that we have. These points are specific to that internal work, your emotional, mental and spiritual well being. It's doing the work of examining your old beliefs that are not currently helping you reach your potential. and breaking them down and reforming them into new beliefs that do help you reach your absolute maximum potential in this lifetime. Most women hesitate to invest in themselves because they believe they're not perfect enough and they believe that they need to be perfect so that they can get the perfect results. You are not sure that you will get the return on investment from investing in yourselfYou believe it works for others, but you don't believe it'll work for you.there is a part of you that believes you need to achieve whatever it is that you're working towards, your happiness, your success, fulfillment, finding your purpose, whatever it might be.You want happiness and success to drop down into your lap, but you don't want to get uncomfortable getting there. You are waiting for the perfect time. You believe that it's selfish to put all this money towards yourself. The problem that needs to be solved is what's going on internally; those internal struggles and unhelpful stories cause external problems. This is actually really good news! We don't need to solve each individual problem by itself. When we heal the relationships that we have within ourselves, we gain the clarity to take action and the results start showing up much faster. The Dark Side of Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2022 29:26

When I went viral, I was not prepared for the negative comments that rolled in! We look at the criticism that people give us with a grain of salt rather than ignore it. I don't say to ignore people's opinions of you, but what can you learn from this? Is any part of this true? And what is like none of your business that I need to let go of? This summer I had some tik-tok videos get very high views, and my account grew in followers from 300 to 16,000 within a week. The first popular video was not very polarizing, it was about how you differentiate between your soul speaking to you versus your mind speaking to you, and apparently, that resonated with the people and it went crazy viral. As things happen right in life, something explodes in a good way and there's a rubber band effect. From then on, my videos only had a few hundred views. But I've learned with social media consistency is the most important thing. So I continued to show up on TikTok. Some days I fall off, but for the most part, I post five to six times a week, and then back-to-back, two went viral. I didn't think there was anything wrong with one of those videos when I made it. Some people thought I was racist, some people thought I was making a big deal out of nothing. Those were hard things to hear. I was sharing a very small sliver of my story. Social media is all about sharing your stories of what made you, you, how did you end up where you are, and why do you do the thing that you do? If you want success, any sort of success, that comes with more visibility.| So I worked through that discomfort and in my breath work session, what came up was, I am worthy of success no matter how many mistakes I make, that it is safe to make mistakes, It is safe to be seen. Maybe you aren't putting yourself out there on social media, but you are someone who's never spoken up, who's always avoided conflict and you've realized you have a voice and you're going to use your voice. When you do stand up for yourself, you are going to upset people by the very fact that you are changing and growing. There's no way around it. This is one of the most uncomfortable side effects of growth. You cannot want to change who you are without having a ripple effect on all of those around you. As we grow and change, you're gonna realize that not everybody likes how you are growing and changing. The dynamics of a relationship are going to change and people won't want to tolerate that anymore and you might not want to tolerate how someone treats you anymore. As painful as it is, you might have to end some relationships as you realize you two are not aligned anymore. Success Markers - Being Confident

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2022 48:33

Almost every client I work with feels they lack confidence. Success and confidence are interconnected, and when we look at what the most successful people have in common, they're all confident! When we identify markers for success, we find ways to build confidence. First, though, there are two confidence myths that we need to break apart. Some believe they will find confidence once success is achieved when actually confidence leads to success. When you believe in yourself, you're willing to take risks, you believe you are capable of achieving a goal, and you continue to expand and grow beyond yourself. Confidence leads to success. Most people believe they have to know it all and have every step figured out before they get started. That does not lead to success. That just leads to waiting and hoping that you have all the bits figured. The way to get over the overwhelm and the confusion is to simply just take the first action. And then as soon as you do that, inevitably the next step will be clear. It's through messy action. We all have desires and ideas of what success means to us. Every person is different. I want you to honor that. There's no standard for what success is for each person. If you look at people who are super successful, they're most likely super confident. And so what do they all have in common? This is what I want to share with you, in order of impactful, to most impactful 1 - They believe in themselves when no one else is around them. 2 - Confident people bet on themselves. 3 - Knowing when to receive help 4 - Confident people admit that they make mistakes. 5 - Confident people don't expect instant results, but they know the results will come no matter what. 6 - Confident people dream big 7 - Trust in your process and the way you do things. 8 - Don't let setbacks and challenges get in their way of where they're going, 9 - Confident people are expressive. 10 - Look at how far you have come instead of how far you have yet to go. "Look in the rear view mirror from where you were to where you are today, that's looking at progress! Your confidence skyrockets when you look at progress." We all have desires and ideas of what success means to us. Every person is different. I want you to honor that. There's no standard for what success is for each person. Breathwork Breakthroughs

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2022 41:33

I'm a storyteller at heart and I love hearing good stories, and this week's episode has several examples of breakthroughs that show the true power of breathwork, through the course of several sessions, or even just one. I promise, every single one of you listening to this podcast has experiences such as this, where you are completely unconscious to it right now and tell yourself you feel stuck, or you don't really know where you are going in life. There's a lack of clarity. All the symptoms that you're experiencing in your life are absolutely a result of things that have not been processed and are stuck energetically in your body. We don't know what the real problem is, and we think we know the real problem, and that is so dangerous that we think we know what the problem is and then it doesn't end up fixing it. In my own business, breathwork is a tremendous tool for coping with worry. I find myself in a default mode of worrying about money and my business, and my family can tell that I am down about something. I've become aware of the pattern and know the worry is not helping me anymore. The change needs to happen at a physical level, instead of the traditional mindset from the top down where we think about it in our head, and then we push it down into our bodies and take action, that is an uphill process. It's really so hard to make changes that way. It requires a lot of willpower; we have only so much before we give up and get frustrated. And through breathwork, we take a bottoms-up approach where you make the change in your body, and then your mind takes command from your body, and then you take action. I have felt so much unexpected anger and rage that I had been holding inside myself for so long, since my childhood, in breathwork sessions. We always project onto others what we don't want to explore within ourselves, and this breakthrough changed how I was able to handle my son's anger, I had so much understanding and empathy that I had never had for his emotional episodes. Whenever my son expressed rage and anger, it would spark outrage in me. We would be in conflict with each other and fight with each other about his emotions. But once I did this breathwork session, I found that I had so much space, time, and energy, and that allowed him to not feel worthless because he was having these reactions. A client recently reached out to me to guide her through her first breathwork session, she had been experiencing a tight feeling in her body even though she had the best month yet in her business. Her session uncovered her pattern of asking for permission to uplevel, and as she grows and expands, she no longer has to seek permission from others and she can allow herself that freedom to expand. All of this came through in her breath work session, and she also said that in the beginning, even though she was trying to take deep breaths, she could tell her breath was constricted and very tight, and towards the end of the session she was, she was feeling so many incredible physical sensations in her body, and she was able to transmute that heavy energy that she felt into light tingly energy. Breathwork is a huge component of the work that I do myself and with my clients, and hearing of how a spiritual practice, or habit has helped others can have a ripple effect and get our brains going about how we can apply those experiences to our own lives and what kind of breakthroughs we can have. Something incredible happens when you allow people to ask something anonymously - they become 10 times more courageous, brave, and vulnerable. These questions came in anonymously on Instagram and each one is it's own conversation. From questions about parenting and playing with children even when you don't enjoy play, investing in yourself and finding a coach, and dreading work and the pressure around careers, this Q and A was so powerful and potent many struggle with these issues that we've talked about today. Take some time to listen to these three questions and the conversation around them so you really have time to digest all the information that I've given you. [00:01 - 06:45] Q - I don't like to play with my kids. I love my kids, but I don't want to play. I feel so guilty. What thoughts do you have? • We grow up watching adults and parents, and have formed ideas and beliefs about what makes a parent good or great • Set boundaries around how long one will play • Be fully present when playing to create a quality connection [06:45 - 13:01] Strategies and insight for playing with your children • Come up with an activity that feels fun-filled for both of you. • Oftentimes we don't want play with our kids because fun is hard for us • Play is based on curiosity and excitement and wonder • For a lot of us, we are completely disconnected from our inner child. [13:01 - 19:38] Q - How did you get over the money to invest in yourself? Why did you hire a coach? I'm scared to spend money on myself. • Unappiness and the unfulfillment is not always circumstances but could be lack of purpose • The feeling you've checked off everything on this natural list that we have, (school, family, career) and then we still feel so lost. • Be inspired by a coach that has been where you are now and seeing how they worked through those feelings • When we are scared to invest in ourselves, the easiest excuse and the easiest reason we grab onto is about money. [19:38 - 30:00] Q - I dread work so much. I have a good career, but I feel so much pressure. Is there anything that would help? • There is so much power in acknowledging we are at in life and the thing that's causing us pain. • Switching careers can feel like a departure from culture and upbringing and neglecting a “duty” • Achieving worthiness because of who you are, not because of achievements. Colin O'Brady is a 10 times world record holding explorer, Mountaineer, Speaker, Entrepreneur, and New York Times bestselling author. I met Colin last year when I signed up to do an endurance challenge called Everesting 29029. I have two podcast episodes dedicated entirely about this experience for more listen in to episode 40 and 41. In today's interview, we dive deep into each of his deeply personal stories of resilience, grit, overcoming failures, and tapping into your intuition. I learned so much from Colin personally and from his mindset and I am so excited to introduce him to you. Colin was raised in Portland, Oregon and spent his childhood as a super active kid with a passion for adventures in outdoors. He excelled at sports and by the time he reached high school, he was nationally ranked in swimming and soccer. He was ultimately recruited to swim at Yale University where he graduated with a Bachelor's in economics. Instead of going to a corporate job after graduation, he decided to save money by painting houses in the summer so that he could fulfill his lifelong dream of backpack and surf and travel the world. He was met with a tragic accident in Thailand and was injured severely in a fire, which burned 25% of his body, leaving him unable to walk and use his arms. But Colin was determined to beat the odds. With the encouragement of his mother, he had a desire to complete a triathlon as his first goal after recovery, even though doctors told him that he may never walk again. He not only went on to complete it but finished in first place within 18 months of that accident. He then went on to become a professional triathlete and ultimately became a mountaineer and an explorer. He completed the Explorer's Grand Slam in record time, summiting the highest peaks in each of the seven continents. He's also summited Mount Everest twice, and he became the first person to walk from one end of Antarctica to the other end, completely unassisted and unsupported, meaning he had to drag his supplies of food and fuel for 60 days on his back.
