CONTENT HEADS UP: This episode contains (among other things) a deep, frank conversation about life, death, Catholicism, the cosmos, reverential dissection, body phenomena, including orgasm, service, enlightenment, circumcision, some swear words, a lot of humor, and of course, some challenges and gifts of being bodies. And in case it's not clear, Gil dissects, with dedication, “donor forms” - no longer inhabited bodies gladly donated by their prior inhabitants - to illuminate the wonders of the human body so that we might all live ours more fully. SYNOPSIS: In this episode, Ali talks with Gil Hedley, educator and the producer of the Integral Anatomy series, who offers a expert perspective on the human body from the inside out. With a background in Theological Ethics and decades of dedication dissecting donated human bodies, Gil views the body as an archaeological site, exploring the layers of the human form and what they reflect about the near-infinite complexity of human existence. This episode delves into, as Gil calls it, a “re-branding of the human body” - giving us life-enhancing “re-conceptions” of the heart and body phenomena (fat, the foreskin, blood, orgasm) we have taken for granted and/or completely misunderstood. This conversation also explores the harmful effects of body fragmentation, and the interconnectedness of spirit and matter. Viewing the body through Gil's extraordinary professional, and personal, perspective gives us a window into our inner-universe and beyond to our cosmic identity. After listening, your experience of being a body will never be the same! We're out of balance with how much of our brain energy we give to certain numbers. Like when this happens in my brain: “How many likes did I get for that post?” A few minutes later…”How about now?” Not useful. I want the numbers I track and encourage my clients and listeners to track to be highly meaningful and helpful in making real business decisions. I never want those numbers to make us feel bad or to help us assess our worthiness. Fuck that. Useful numbers help us make decisions and pay attention to what we care about. Less useful numbers stress us out and distract us from what matters to us. Most people I know don't like to spend much time tracking or analyzing numbers in their businesses. I, on the other hand, can tend to OVER track and analyze. I sometimes like to cope with my anxiety by pretending I have some control. Tracking and analyzing numbers on spreadsheets can sometimes feel soothing. But as a company of one, NOT a huge corporation, I don't have time or energy to track every single number in my business. Using my intuition AND useful numbers helps me resist some of the most damaging traps we tend to fall into when making decisions. Useful numbers help me resist things like recency bias, confirmation bias, sunk cost fallacy, and shiny object syndrome. In this week's podcast episode, I talk about the numbers I ALWAYS pay attention to, the numbers I pay attention to just during an experiment, and the numbers I try to ignore. In this episode, we explore these instinctive behaviors and their impact on emotional regulation, decision-making, and relationships. The four trauma responses most commonly recognized are: Fight – when we believe that if we are able to maintain power over the threat, we will gain control. This can look like physical fights, yelling, physical aggression, throwing things, and property destruction. It can also look like balling your hands into fists, feeling a knot in your stomach, crying, being argumentative, or experiencing a tight jaw.Flight – when we believe that if we are able to escape the threat and avoid conflict, then we will not be harmed. This can look like running away and avoiding interactions with others," notes Moronu. To avoid uncomfortable feelings, you may escape the situation by staying busy or fleeing for the exit whenever things get tough. Freeze – it might look like being at a loss for words, retreating into your mind, having a hard time breaking out and being present, sleeping, dissociating/spacing out, and going emotionally or physically numb.”Fawn – people-pleasing and engaging in pacifying behaviors. It's characterized by prioritizing people above all else by doing whatever they want to diffuse conflict and receive their approval. It seems good to be well liked and defer to others to secure safety, but not when it's at the cost of losing yourself. It can reach a point where you abandon yourself and your needs by merging so thoroughly with others.“Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn: Examining The 4 Trauma Responses” – Julie NguyenTamara SlaytonPeter LevinePersonal Geometry and Family Constellation Work The Big Leap by Gay HendricksSo Barbara Stanny Overcoming Under Earning Mikelann ValterraENCOURAGE US!: Donate $5 THE WIND BENEATH OUR WINGS. Happy Satiated Saturday! I wish financial literacy was taught in schools earlier on in life. I've had so many conversations with others about the deep shame and personal judgment that can arise when you feel unclear about how to navigate your money life. And how does this connect with food?Well, often how we interact with one area of our life is how we respond to all other areas. Have you ever noticed that when you want to eat everything you also want to spend your money on things you potentially don't need? Have you ever noticed that when you're restricting your food intake you're worrying about not having enough money? Both food and money are a reflection of what's going on inside your body. Just as I talk about eating is a somatic practice, you can approach your relationship with money in a similar somatic way.In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk with Bari Tessler, M.A. in Somatic Psychology, Financial Therapist and Author, about body check-ins when making financial decisions, money dates, emotional awareness in managing money, the connection between Enneagram types and money habits, and practical steps to start your journey toward a healthier relationship with money. Hi My Lovelies, In response to our previous episode (58) with Dana Miranda of Healthy Rich on somatic practice to work with our difficult money stories. I discovered from Bari Tessler's book The Art of Money workbook (from the podcast Inside Job with Nayla Bahri and Eric Johnson). Tessler does a lot of the practices that I actually detailed in my book but she applies them specifically to our difficult emotions around money, and almost ALL of us have these, no matter how much money we make. What I love is the 3 step set of practices for our money dates or money clarity sessions as I think of them: Body Check-in - feel and sense into your body and notice what's happening Resource Ourselves - make adjustments Titration - go slow and take it at your own pace Rather than avoiding bad feelings, it is helpful to lean into them, describe where they appear in our bodies and realize they are not going to harm us. We can physically resource ourselves and make our money clarity session into a comforting ritual can help us approach it more gently. I actually walk through my own feelings about money regret so you can be with me during one of these practices. Hope this provides some helpful support to you! My guest this month needs no introduction! Bari is one of the OGs in the financial wellness industry. Her book The Art of Money changed my life when I read it a few years ago. Back in the day, when all the info you would find on finances and money was written from a perspective of "do this, not that", discipline and restriction-based, Bari was one of the first people to introduce money as a self-care practice. Her book offers such a beautiful standpoint on money, finances, and how it can how it blends in to help you create a life you love. In this episode, we dive into:- The genesis of Bari's very unique perspective on money management.- How your small, intangible, unquantifiable money wins that seem simple, like not freaking out when you are paying the bills, are as important as the tangible wins because one will lead to the other. - Why more money does NOT necessarily mean your financial anxiety will be gone, and why some of our clients might experience MORE anxiety when they start earning more. - How financial ups and downs are natural and even normal, and how expecting your finances or your net worth to keep going up, is unrealistic! When financial advisors meet with clients, it's easy to focus solely on the numbers and neglect the feelings they elicit. It's easy to focus on dollars at the expense of emotions. But every single client you work with has a relationship with money that extends beyond data, numbers and dollar signs. It's easy to overlook these things when talking about money. But, it becomes evident when you're dealing with the retiree who simply won't spend their money despite having more than they could ever need. Or the client who simply can't follow your advice no matter how many times you've shown them exactly what to do. Or the couple who can never seem to get on the same page with their finances after years and years of trying to help them. They need help blending the financial and emotional components of money. But most of the work on how to do this resides in the field of financial therapy. Fortunately, Bari Tessler is a highly-regarded financial therapist. And, she's developed a three-step framework to help clients transform their relationship with money. In this episode, we discuss: How to better approach your finances using a "Money Date" What she learned from hyperventilating at the car dealership 3 Levels of "Money Maps" that she uses instead of budgeting The power of renaming cash flow categories in alignment with values How understanding your body improves your relationship with money The featured partner for this episode is Knudge, an automated system to help clients actually follow through on their tasks and reach their financial goals. *For more resources discussed in this episode, check out www.wiredplanning.com/episode84. *For more resources and insights on mastering the human side of advice, go to www.wiredplanning.com. *Follow Brendan for insights on mastering the human side of advice: Twitter LinkedIn

Join me this week with Bari Tessler, a Financial Therapist, author of book, The Art of Money, a Life-Changing Diet to Financial Happiness. I have been following her for some time now and I love her work because she blends financial literacy with emotional literacy and body-centered work. She's a pioneer in the field of financial literacy and has also is the founder of The Art of Money, a year-long money school for lay folks and a 4-month Mentor program for therapists, coaches, and financial professionals. Many of us pay too much attention to the numbers and our bookkeeping instead of what's truly, deeply important to us and who we are. Her unique process of using somatic tools to connect to our money story equips us to be able to do a body check-in and calm ourselves down when we face challenges like learning a new bookkeeping system or facing our accounts 90% of our money decisions are based on our emotions, and we have all had some kind of financial literacy education but most of us don't learn about money psychology or the emotions of money. Merging financial literacy and emotional literacy are essential, we all have missing pieces in our financial education, and for many, emotional literacy is the missing piece. The Financial Therapy Podcast - It's Not Just About The Money
Last episode we covered the first 10 of 21 "Things your financial therapist wants you to know," by Bari Tessler, one of the early pioneers of financial therapy. I thought her points were excellent and worth repeating. Here is my take on the last 11 of them.
The Financial Therapy Podcast - It's Not Just About The Money
Bari Tessler was practicing financial therapy before most of the rest of us had ever heard the term. A psychotherapist, Bari decided to go into the bookkeeping business, quickly saw the union of psychology and money, and in 2001 began calling her work financial therapy. I met her a few years later and have been a fan of her work ever since. Last fall Bari posted two articles listing 21 "Things your financial therapist wants you to know." I thought her points were excellent and worth repeating. Here is my take on the first ten of them.
The Financial Therapy Podcast - It's Not Just About The Money
Bari Tessler has spent over 20 years guiding thousands of people into happier, more empowered and refreshingly honest relationships with money. She was one of the early pioneers of financial therapy, and actually coined the term, by combining her Master's degree in Somatic Psychology and her financial expertise in bookkeeping to create an integrated approach to deep money work. Join Bari and Rick for an insightful conversation on how Bari became a leader in the field of financial therapy.
Bari is a financial therapist, author, and founder of The Art of Money (which is a methodology, a year-long money school, and a book!). In 2001, she merged all her training and created a financial therapy methodology that weaves together personal, couple, and creativepreneur finances into one tapestry. In her group programs and private financial therapy, she has guided thousands of people to new, more loving, and refreshingly honest relationships with money. She is on a mission to bring healing, un-shaming, and empowerment to our money relationships and all that it touches. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband, son, and their many cats.
