Healing Starts with the Heart
You Knew How to Grieve

Healing Starts with the Heart

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2025 27:25

In this empowering episode of Healing Starts with the Heart, Sharon Brubaker pulls back the curtain on one of the greatest grief misconceptions: that we need to learn how to grieve. Sharon reveals a deeper truth—we were all born knowing how to grieve. From your first cry to your instinct to reach out when in pain, grief is not something to be taught but something we've been taught to forget. Through raw, compassionate storytelling and the powerful example of a client who found her way back to healing, Sharon reminds us that grief is not a flaw—it's our body and spirit doing exactly what they were designed to do. If you've ever questioned your tears, your numbness, or the way your grief looks—this episode is for you. Key Points Discussed: You didn't lose your ability to grieve—you were born with it The world unteaches us how to grieve by rewarding silence and pretending Grief is a full-body, nervous system experience—not just emotional pain Your grief is not wrong, too big, too heavy, or something to be fixed Real healing begins when we stop performing and start expressing honestly A powerful story of a widow rediscovering her voice in Grief Study Hall Why your body still remembers how to release what hurts—without needing a manual Journal Questions for Reflection: When did you first start to believe your grief was “too much”? How have you been performing instead of feeling your grief? What rules or messages about grief have shaped your current experience? How has your body been trying to express grief—and have you been listening? What would it look like to stop apologizing for your grief? Are you willing to trust that you still know how to grieve? Conclusion: You don't need to learn how to grieve—you need to remember that you already know. Your tears are not signs of weakness, your pain is not brokenness, and your emotions are not something to hide. They're sacred. They're real. They're part of the healing. Sharon invites you to stop apologizing, stop performing, and return to what your body, your heart, and your spirit already know how to do: grieve. Shownotes:   In this powerful and deeply personal episode, Amb. Elisha continues his life-changing series on The Life of a True Citizen.   This message will challenge how you see your existence, your role in society, and the divine purpose behind your life.   Here's what you'll take away from this episode:   • Why your life is not an accident, and how your presence is God's answer to a specific problem in this generation.   • The difference between merely existing and living intentionally as a heavenly citizen.   • A transformational look at Proverbs 19:21 and James 1:2–4, showing that God's purpose always stands—even above your well-laid plans.   • How your reaction to life's challenges can shape others silently, powerfully, and eternally.   • Why you're called to influence the world not by force, but by lifestyle—through your thoughts, actions, and responses.   • The reason the devil fears your discovery of purpose—and why he works overtime to keep you distracted or discouraged.   • A truth-bomb on culture, confusion, and compassion—how to handle controversial topics like gender identity with grace, truth, and God's heart for transformation.   Elisha doesn't just speak truth—he lives it. This isn't another “feel good” message. It's a divine wake-up call to rise, reason, and reign as a citizen of heaven.   Conclusion: You weren't just born—you were sent. God foresaw a crisis, crafted you as the solution, and inserted you into the exact time and location where your impact is needed.   Stop surviving. Start living as a true citizen of heaven. A Profitable Legal Strategy with Jeff Holman   Is your professional service firm just a glorified job? Are you stuck in the time-for-money trap, wondering where the profit is? In this eye-opening episode of the Profit Answer Man, we sit down with Jeff Holman, a serial entrepreneur and attorney who cracked the code on building true profitability into a law firm—without working 80 hours a week or billing by the hour. If you're running a service-based business, this episode is a masterclass in aligning cash flow, value creation, and scalable legal support. You'll hear how Jeff transitioned from paycheck-chasing attorney to scalable business owner using a fractional legal team model—and how he implemented Profit First in an industry that often ignores profit altogether.   In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why most law firms (and professional services) operate at a financial loss—even when they look successful. How to escape the “next client, next invoice” cycle and start building enterprise value. The secret behind Jeff's Fractional Legal Team model—and how you can apply the same thinking to your industry. Why implementing Profit First was a game-changer for Jeff's firm—and how you can do it too.  Why professional service providers MUST stop thinking like employees and start acting like business owners.   Key Takeaways:  Profit Isn't Optional: Running a law firm—or any business—without a clear profit strategy is just self-employment in disguise. Jeff shares how he flipped the script and began designing profit into the business. The Time-for-Money Trap is Real: Many lawyers, consultants, and service professionals stay broke by chasing billable hours. Jeff explains how he stepped out of the "lawyer job" mindset and into the role of a true business owner. Build with the End in Mind: “If you're going to run this business for 10–15 years, why not build something that's actually worth something?” Jeff dives into how he intentionally built enterprise value instead of just cash flow. Fractional Legal is the Future: Jeff's team model puts the right attorney with the right client at the right time—maximizing value while minimizing overhead. It's not just smart law—it's smart business. Profit First for Professionals: Learn how Jeff applied the Profit First system to create clarity, control, and cash flow in a notoriously chaotic industry—and why more professionals need to do the same.   About Jeff Holman: Jeff Holman is the founder of Intellectual Strategies, a firm revolutionizing how startups and growth-stage businesses access legal help. His Fractional Legal Team approach gives companies the right legal expertise when they need it—without the cost of a full-time legal department. With a background in engineering, law, and business, Jeff bridges the gap between technical teams and legal strategy. He's admitted to practice in California, Utah, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and brings over two decades of experience tackling complex business and legal problems. Jeff's mission is simple: help clients grow smarter, faster, and more profitably.   Conclusion: You don't need to be a lawyer to learn from this episode. Whether you're running a design agency, a coaching practice, or a consulting firm, Jeff Holman's story is your wake-up call: your business should serve YOU—not the other way around. Stop building a job. Start building a business that pays you now and has value when you're ready to step away.   Links: Website: https://www.intellectualstrategies.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/holman/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@intellectualstrategies9742 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/intellectualstrategies/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/61554259033445   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available! What are you doing with your life right now? Is this something to be encouraged by? Is it something that is moving you in the direction that you want to move? If you wait for the perfect time to accomplish something you are passionate about, it might be too late before you succeed. The right time is either invested or wasted. You're either doing something that is moving you forward or something that's moving you backwards. Collin Cottrell shares his life growing up in a small, poor community in Central Minnesota. He talks about how did he get the confidence and desire to reach out and help different people, the importance of having a good mentor, pursuing various interests, projects, or goals you have for your life, what he did do to build his business, and the value of dedicating your time to more important things. Tune in as Collin talks about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes:  “There are times in your life when it's okay to go and spend a lot of your time chasing various endeavours while you're single and young, so you can learn a lot at that moment to use that as something later in life.” - Collin Cottrell “Now that I'm in my 30s, I have more wisdom, I have more balance in my life, and I'm using these connections in a way where it's not just about me, but about serving and helping others.” - Collin Cottrell  “We have to push towards hard things at that moment we don't want to.” - Collin Cottrell    Takeaways: Use the time and energy you have right now to accomplish what you've always wanted. But still, it is important to stay aligned with your goals and endeavours. You'll have a lot of things you've learnt as time goes on when you look back. Therewere many opportunities for young people eager to pursue their goals and put in significant effort. Quit making excuses. Take control of your life and stop worrying about what other people are doing. It's time for you to make a change in your life.  Do hard things purposely in your life. True happiness and success come from becoming the finest, most authentic version of themselves. On the inside, not the outside. It has nothing to do with a brand, a reputation, or a persona. It all comes down to reality. Who you truly are. It's a straightforward idea. The difficulty is that it's extremely difficult to perform, requires a lot of effort, and can take a lifetime to find out. Nothing worthwhile in life is ever simple. If you want to perform an exceptional job, you must put in a lot of effort. And you'll have to get out of your comfort zone and take some risks that will terrify you. Ryan Fischer imparts his life's lessons, wisdom, and counsel to everyone listening today. Success necessitates the ability to adapt. Every one of us has the possibility for adventure right in front of us. You'll never know what you're capable of until you try. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, and more! Quotes: “You can't relax too much to the point where you're careless.” – Ryan Fischer “What are we truly meant to do? I feel like all of us will eventually put on a few different shirts, and eventually one is going to fit just right.” – Ryan Fischer “Always make sure you're the best version of yourself at all times. Because you never know who's watching.” – Ryan Fischer Takeaways: Being cautious not only protects yourself, but also keeps you safe from the carelessness of others.   All of life's issues and challenges keep things fascinating. That makes life meaningful. We lose interest in life if everything follows a strict sequence. This is true for your life's purpose as well. There is no one greater than you, therefore be the best version of yourself because no one is born to represent someone else. Conclusion: You only have so much time, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't let the din of other people's ideas drown out your own voice. You must have faith that the dots will join in the future. You must have faith in something—your intuition, fate, life, karma, or anything. This method has never failed me and has made all the difference in my life. To perform an outstanding job, you must first love what you do. Keep looking if you haven't discovered it yet. Don't give up.

As you walk through your life journey, many people will say something to you no matter what you do. Friends and even your own family can say opinions that bring you down, which can hinder the path we want to take. You are young, and you might think you should listen to what everyone says. But listening to the opinions they want you to make will affect the joy in your life and may leave you regrets towards your choices. Brad Lea shares his life experiences of how he was thrown out of the house and single-handedly managed his life at the age of 16 and how he got a job selling cars that became his gateway to sales. Tune in as Brad Lea discusses why you should not listen to every opinion others say to you, the secret formula to being successful in life, and why watching successful people will enable you to get what you want. Quotes: “At the end of the day, when someone has an opinion of you, note it if you want to, but don't make your decisions based on someone else's idea of what they think you need. Go worry about what you think you need. ” –  Brad Lea “We're all a salesperson.  It's just the difference between a good salesperson and a bad one is the good one knows they're doing it, and the bad one does not.” – Brad Lea “If you watch what other people do, nine times out of ten, if you emulate what they do, you'll get what they got. ” – Brad Lea Takeaways: Sales is a skill, and so it can be learned. You don't have to be anything specific to do it. Some people are naturally gifted in sales, but even those not inclined in sales can excel. It just takes them longer. To succeed in life, you need to focus on these three things: health, money, and relationships. Money is essential, especially if you want to be healthy. But to gain money, you need to build strong relationships with other people. Focus on cycling these three; the key to enjoying life will be yours. If you see someone who is successful in whatever aspects of their life, and you desire to be like them, emulate them. Start finding out who they are, what they do daily, where they eat, and all other information about them to reach their standing. This will help you have the skills and habits towards success. Conclusion: You don't need to listen to every opinion that others give to you. Yes, there are good opinions that might help you, but there are also bad opinions that can stop you from doing what you want. So be smart, and evaluate first if the opinion given to you will be helpful or not. Ultimately, you are the one to decide and choose what you think you need to achieve your goal.

In this episode of The Balanced Dietitian Podcast, we talk about SUGAR and the stress we experience around food due to societal norms and our attachment of worth to certain foods.  We challenge the concept of food/sugar addiction and review how to increase balance in our nutrition. I believe in a balanced and consistent approach to nutrition that focuses on adding rather than restricting. Here's whats covered in this episode:   [00:00:05] Welcome to Balanced Dietitian Podcast where science and psychology combine to empower individuals with a better relationship with food and body for a better life. [00:03:31] Food can become tied to self-worth, leading to a hierarchical system with certain foods seen as "better" or "worse". Diet culture has now merged with wellness culture, with sugar demonized as the worst thing to consume. [00:06:57] Dieters may attach more worth to certain foods due to deprivation, leading to heightened emotional response and dopamine release. Importance of considering psychology and morality in relation to food. [00:11:19] Don't fear sugar, focus on health-promoting behaviors. View nutrition as addition, not restriction. Stress around food is worse than the food itself. [00:15:14] Assess your relationship with sugar and understand nutritional needs, especially for those with sensitivities. [00:18:49] Dopamine release not indicative of addiction; restriction triggers addiction behavior in rats. [00:23:46] Intuitive eating balances thoughts, emotions, and intuition with food. Anti-diet doesn't mean it's a free for all with food. It's still important to strive for balance and understand how food impacts our bodies. [00:24:44] Podcast host invites audience on instagram to share thoughts on sugar and debunk diet culture. Aims to promote a healthy relationship with food to improve lives.   Conclusion: You can eat sugar. Keep in mind that Jesus is now letting it become known that he's the Messiah and King of Israel. He's no longer trying to keep this a secret.Jesus gets questioned by the chief Jewish priests and the elders of the people where he gets his authority. This isn't an unreasonable question, actually. After all, Jesus hasEntered Jerusalem as the coming Messiah King of Israel and did not refuse the messianic praises he received.Entered the temple and cleared (cursed?) it.Entered the temple and taught in it.So to question where he gets his authority is a reasonable even responsible question for them to ask. After all, they are responsible for what happens in the temple courts. And it's good to remember that all authority comes from someone unless that someone is God himself. Jesus will say his authority comes from God the Father. And he'll then show them the implications of his authority. To not acknowledge it and gladly submit to it in life is to go the way of these ungodly religious leaders. That is to be rejected by God.Story/Illustration: Lighthouse v Battleship The captain of the ship looked into the dark night and saw faint lights in the distance. Immediately he told his signalman to send a message” “Alter your course 10 degrees south.”Promptly a return message was received: “Alter your course 10 degrees north.”The captain was angered; his command had been ignored. So he sent a second message: “Alter your course 10 degrees south—I am the captain!”Soon another message was received: Alter your course 10 degrees north—I am seaman third class Jones.”Immediately the captain sent a third message, knowing the fear it would evoke: “Alter your course 10 degrees south—I am a battleship.”Then the reply came “Alter your course 10 degrees north—I am a lighthouse.”In the midst of our dark and foggy times, all sorts of voices are shouting orders into the night, telling us what to do, how to adjust our lives. Out of the darkness, one voice signals something quite opposite to the rest—something almost absurd. But the voice happens to be the Light of the World, and we ignore it at our peril. —Paul Aiello, Jr. Bottom line: Jesus gets ALL authority from God the Father who makes him Lord of all. Therefore, the only appropriate response is to gladly submit to him in ALL things—especially in the building of His Kingdom.OutlineI. Jesus' Authority Questioned: Matthew 21:23-27Q. What do I want you to know? A. Jesus' authority comes from his Father.Q. Why do I want you to know?A. Because there is no other authority worthy to be submitted to, ultimately.Q. What do I want you to do? A. Recognize Jesus' authority from the Father and gladly submit to him. Q. Why do I want you to do this?A. So that you will reap the blessings and miss the wrath. How? Pray with repentant faith now, early and often.II. Parable of the 2 Sons21:28-32Q. What do I want you to know?A. Israel's leaders (and many Jews) did not repent and believe thus rejecting Jesus as Messiah.Q. Why do I want you to know this?A. Because there are grave consequences for not submitting to his authority.Q. What do I want you to do?A. Trust, obey and follow Jesus like the sinners did—though they said no to his words, ways and works initially, they eventually repented and believed. How? Pray for God to open your eyes, trust, and follow him today.III. Parable of the Tenants21:33-46Q. What do I want you to know?A. Israel rejected God the Father (prophets), God the son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit (at Stephen's stoning).God is a stone/rock in scripture. To Israel, a stumbling block. To Church, a cornerstone and foundation. To Gentile kingdoms at end of age, smiting stone.Q. Why?A. So that we don't make the same mistake.Q. What do I want them to do?A. Build your life on the rock that doesn't roll or be crushed by him. Because the consequences are great! How? Pray, repent and believe that King Jesus deserves all your allegiance. Conclusion“You are more sinful and flawed than you ever dared believe. But more accepted and loved than you ever dared hope.” -Tim KellerA missionary to Africa told someone, “When we want to share the gospel in a village in Africa, we don't send them books. We send them a Christian family.”Why is it better to send the family than some books? It's certainly cheaper. Seems more efficient. But this experienced missionary understood that the Christian life lived like Jesus would demonstrate what glad submission to God would look like. The gospel wouldn't just be taught but caught. Bottom line: Jesus gets ALL authority from God the Father who makes him Lord of all. Therefore, the only appropriate response is to gladly submit to him in ALL things—especially in the building of His Kingdom. One true story that illustrates the authority of God involves a man named Louis Zamperini, who was a former Olympic runner and a prisoner of war during World War II. After his plane crashed into the ocean, Zamperini survived for over 47 days on a raft in shark-infested waters before being captured by the Japanese and taken to a prison camp.Despite facing torture, starvation, and daily beatings, Zamperini never lost his faith in God and continued to pray for strength and guidance. He even forgave his captors and used his influence to help his fellow prisoners. Eventually, Zamperini was released from the prison camp and went on to live a long and fulfilling life, crediting his survival and resilience to the authority of God.This true story shows how the authority of God can help people to endure and overcome unimaginable challenges. Even in the darkest of times, God's authority can provide people with the hope, courage, and strength they need to persevere and thrive. The true story of Louis Zamperini is a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity. The Umbrella of AuthorityEach of us has a decision to make . Will we gladly step under the umbrella of God's good authority? Or will we step out from under it and be pelted by the world and evil as we resist God's commands? Grace and mercy are provided while we humbly remain underneath. God's justice is poured out on those who step out from under it. Where are you standing right now? Will you come underneath and obey God's commands to build his kingdom?God has shown us how to gladly submit to him all our days. Will you?Let's prayNOTESDSO notes, 21:23-37“So Jesus turns the tables on them again, saying in essence, ‘If you're not capable enough to judge John the Baptist as Heaven-sent, then you are certainly not capable to judge me.'” P. 613“You see, what John said about Jesus was the answer the their question. (That's what Jesus is getting at here.) And what did John say?” P. 614So there's the answer to their question (through J the B) and 3 parables illustrating this answer using 2 themes: faith and judgment. P. 614-615“With great authority Jesus teaches these authorities about his authority.” P. 6152 Lessons here:“The gates to God's kingdom open wide to the bluntly ungodly if they repent, but not a crack for the precisely orthodox if they do not.”“Show me your faith.” “To Jesus, one is not saved by talk alone…but by faith alone (“believe” 3x), a faith that is never alone (a faith that obeys the word/will/voice of God)—To Jesus, verbal faith is not saving faith; a doing faith is saving faith.” P. 61621:33-41Second parable—“Jesus gives a condensed symbolic (or allegorical) version of salvation history.” P. 6172 Lessons: “God is patient; God is just.”“God will judge those who don't accept his Son.”“God is patient; God is just. Don't try his patience; trust his Son.” P. 619So, “by what authority?”Everyone of us should ask this question. Here's the answer: “By God's authority. I am the Son he sent.”Here's the answer: “God did. I am the stone he set in place. By God's authority I am the Son, and I am the Stone.” P. 620MAIN REFERENCES USED“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“Matthew” by RC Sproul“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“The Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)Outline Bible, D WillmingtonNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study Bible (ESVSB)

Making a lot of money isn't selfish or greedy, in fact, it can actually be very rewarding! But before you start making money easy, you need to understand the common misconceptions about money and how it affects our thoughts and actions. In this episode, we'll talk about why making a lot of money isn't greedy or selfish. So whether you're looking to improve your financial stability or simply feel better about your relationship with money, read on for insightful advice on how to shift your thinking when it comes to your finances. The misconception that making a lot of money is selfish or greedy There's a popular misconception that making a lot of money is somehow selfish or greedy. In reality, it can actually be the opposite. People who make a lot of money often give back to their community and contribute to society in other ways. They also tend to have happier and healthier lives, as they're able to devote more time to things that matter to them. Making a lot of money isn't about taking everything for yourself, it's about sharing what you've got with others. So, if you're thinking of making some extra cash, don't forget to think about how you can best contribute to your community and help others in need. It's the best way to live a fulfilling and happy life! You can learn my tips to manifest money so you can begin giving like never before. Isn't it selfish to want a lot of money? A lot of people seem to think that wanting a lot of money is selfish. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. It's actually very selfless to want money - after all, it's just a tool we can use to achieve our goals in life. While happiness is definitely important, money shouldn't be our only focus in life. We should make sure that we are adequately taking care of ourselves and those we love too - otherwise, why am I even bothering having any at all? Isn't making a lot of money greedy? People often wonder if making a lot of money is greedy. The answer, as you might have guessed, depends on who you ask. Some people believe that being greedy is self-centered and takes away from others. On the other hand, there are plenty of successful people out there who don't make much money but still lead happy and fulfilling lives. So, the next time you feel greedy or selfish with your money, remember that making a lot of money is actually a great thing! Final thoughts So, you've decided to make a lot of money. Before you start counting your money in millions, remember that money isn't everything. It's actually helpful to use money responsibly and think about the long-term consequences of your actions. Many wealthy people are unhappy and stressed out, for example. So, it's important to soak up the good vibes and remember that happiness comes from within. Remember, money can't buy happiness, but it can buy you freedom, security, and a life you love and you can reach your goals faster when you put yourself into it. However, often times it's easy to get lost in the act of doing - whether it's working hard at a task or trying to make a new relationship work. We'll also offer a few journal prompts for taking inspired action and getting started on your journey to success. So go ahead and get inspired!   What is inspired action? If you're looking for a way to take inspired action, look no further than Lindsay Jani. In this article, we're going to learn more about what inspired action is and how it can help you achieve your goals. Inspired action is a process of taking small steps in the right direction that lead to big changes. It's all about being intentional with your thoughts and actions, and staying focused on what you want to achieve. To get started, first identify your goals. Once you have a clear idea of what you want, come up with a plan of action that will help you get there. Be patient - it can take time for things to work out as planned, but the end result will be worth it!   How to tell the difference between action and inspired action? Inspired action is key to achieving any goal towards lead quality. It's the difference between doing something because you feel like it, and doing something because you know it will lead to a positive outcome. However, there's a big difference between action and inspired action. The first is driven by impulse, and the second is based on a plan with a specific goal in mind. When you're taking action, make sure you have a clear purpose. Set specific goals and make sure you stay motivated by challenging yourself and setting new goals. Remember that failure is part of the process - embrace it! In the end, following these simple steps will help you take inspired action and achieve your goals.   The benefits of taking inspired action Inspired action is the key to success. It's the difference between doing what's easy and doing what's right. It's about taking action based on our intuition and following our heart - no matter what the consequences may be. We need to be open-minded and willing to take risks in order to achieve our goals. However, it's worth the effort! The benefits of taking inspired action are innumerable. For example, it allows us to be true to ourselves and follow our intuition. It also allows us to be creative and innovative, and to seize opportunities as they come our way. The key is to be patient and keep at it, no matter how challenging it may be at times. As long as we're inspired, we're on the right track!   How inspired action will aid in manifesting your goals One of the most important keys to taking inspired action is setting specific, measurable goals. Once you have your goals set, create a plan of action that will help you achieve them. And make sure to enjoy the journey along the way. By living in the present moment and taking inspired action, you will be on your way to manifesting your dreams and get your goals faster. So start now by setting some goals and getting started on the action plan!   How to take inspired action to make things easy now When it comes to taking inspired action, the key is to be clear about what you want in life and write it down. This will help you to stay focused and on track. Once you have a clear understanding of your goals, it's time to create a plan of action. This plan should include a timeline, milestones, and resources needed to achieve your goals. Be persistent - don't give up on your dreams until they finally become a reality! And remember: taking inspired action doesn't mean doing things the easy way. It means embracing difficulties along the way and pushing through them for a better future. So, go ahead and take inspired action today!   Journal Prompts for Taking Inspired Action Taking inspired action can be a challenging task, but with a little planning and effort, it's definitely doable. To get started, take some time to reflect on the past few weeks and create a list of aspirations you'd like to achieve in the upcoming week. Choose one aspiration to focus on this week and make a plan of action to achieve it. Weekly reflection keeps your actions motivated, inspires new ideas, and builds momentum for continued success. Be sure to follow through with your plans - starting today - so that you can see real progress in your ambitious endeavors!     Frequently Asked Questions   What are some tips for taking inspired action? To take inspired action and achieve your goals, Lindsay Jani recommends the following: 1. Figure out what your "why" is - what's driving you to do something? This is important because it will help you stay motivated and focus on the long-term objectives of your project. 2. Create a plan of action - this includes setting timelines and ensuring that everything in your plan is achievable. 3. Be persistent! Don't give up on yourself or let other outside factors derail your progress.   What are some other ways to take inspired action in my life? Some of the other ways to take inspired action include: writing in a journal, meditating, spending time outdoors in nature, practicing yoga. Some people think of success as something they'll achieve once they've reached a certain age or have made a certain amount of money. Others believe it's something that happens when they reach the top of their field and are recognized by their peers for their achievements. Regardless of what your definition is, one thing is clear: everyone around us affects what we think and do, our plans, and our goals. How do we use this power to our advantage? Success can be achieved by any means—you just need to know how. Brad Lea is a businessman and entrepreneur. He owns a number of businesses and has extensive experience in sales, life, and business. Brad assists people in becoming better people. Brad has made every mistake in the book but has learned a lot along the way. He always provides clarity in a chaotic world and always tells the truth. He has met many people, has been blessed with an incredible network, has revolutionized online learning, and has had a massive impact on the lives of many people, including his own. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes: “The difference between a good and a bad salesperson is that the good one knows they're doing it. The bad one, on the other hand, does not.” – Brad Lea “When someone has an opinion about you, take note. But don't base your decisions on what someone else thinks you need. Go worry about what you believe you require.” – Brad Lea “Have a strong sense of your own importance, backed up with ethics and integrity.” – Brad Lea Takeaways: Relationships, money, and health are all intertwined and serve as your success tool. You get more concentrated as you get healthier. And focus allows you to complete more work and earn more money, which leads to more relationships. The road to success is not an easy one. Improving your way of thinking, your skill set, and your dedication to practicing positive routines is a process that never ends. If you observe a successful person and want to be just like him, you should explore what they do every day, including how they think and what they do. Resemble their daily routine and make it a habit. Absolutely, you will achieve your goals. Conclusion: You should not give other people the ability to choose your path of action. You will never be able to control the thoughts of other people, nor will you ever be able to win everyone's approval. Neither of these things are even somewhat possible. Simply be yourself and focus on developing yourself as much as possible. Keep your attention on your commitments and goals.

Pastor David shares Wednesday in Dickinson. Review: Last week, we saw that God gave us the Power of Attorney to use the Name of Jesus. It is by the Name of Jesus that we have access to all of Heaven's resources: they are all at our disposal through the Name of Jesus! Matthew 28:18-19 (NLT) Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. [19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. A Name is only as good as the power and authority that back it My name will not get you very far if you want military clearance. But if you had the name of a top military officer and his approval, with documentation that you have his approval, you could go wherever he said you could go! See, a name is only as good as the authority backing that name. The More Excellent Name: How it came Three ways a great name may be attained: Some people are born to a great name (They inherit it) Some people make their name great because of their achievements (by conquest) Other have a great name given to them (by bestowal) Jesus' Great Name came through all three avenues: He inherited His great Name, His Name is great because of His achievements, and His Name is great because it was given to Him By Inheritance Hebrews 1:1-6 (NKJV) God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, [2] has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; [3] who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, [4] having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. [5] For to which of the angels did He ever say: "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again: "I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON"? [6] But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM." Jesus inherited a more excellent Name than the angels When did Jesus inherit that more excellent Name? It was not when He was in Heaven! He had everything in heaven. Verses 4 and 5 tell us that it was when Jesus was begotten. Hebrews 1:4-5 (AMPC) [Taking a place and rank by which] He Himself became as much superior to angels as the glorious Name (title) which He has inherited is different from and more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did [God] ever say, You are My Son, today I have begotten You [established You in an official Sonship relation, with kingly dignity]? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He will be to Me a Son? So we can see that it was the moment that Jesus was begotten and established in an official Sonship relationship that He inherited that great Name. But WHEN WAS JESUS BEGOTTEN? It was not when He took on flesh as a baby in Bethlehem. Jesus was not born when He took on flesh, because He preexisted with the Father. He simply took upon Himself a body. Hebrews 10:5 (NKJV) Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU DID NOT DESIRE, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME. In John 1:1-3,14 we see that He preexisted with the Father: John 1:1-3 (NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:14 (NKJV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. The day Jesus was begotten: Acts 13:33 (NKJV) God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' The day that Jesus was begotten and established in an official Sonship relationship was the DAY OF THE RESURRECTION! The day that Jesus tasted death and hell for us! Hebrews 2:9 (NKJV) But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. Jesus experienced physical and spiritual death for us! His death on the cross was more than His body dying, but He Who knew no sin and had never sinned BECAME sin for us, and His spirit died as well and He went into hell for three days until God SNATCHED Him from the grave and raised Him to life and sat Him down at His right hand. Matthew 27:45-46 (NKJV) Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. [46] And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" (ALSO IN MARK 15:34) The death Jesus experienced was for us! He swapped places with us 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV) For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. When we receive Jesus we become a new creation and receive a new nature - one with the life and peace of God. We take upon ourselves the nature of God – which is life and peace, where the devil's nature is hatred and lies. We don't know specifically what happened in hell, but we do know that Jesus took care of spiritual death for us! Acts 2:25-31 (NKJV) For David says concerning Him: 'I FORESAW THE LORD ALWAYS BEFORE MY FACE, FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, THAT I MAY NOT BE SHAKEN. [26] THEREFORE MY HEART REJOICED, AND MY TONGUE WAS GLAD; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL REST IN HOPE. [27] FOR YOU WILL NOT LEAVE MY SOUL IN HADES, NOR WILL YOU ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION. [28] YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF JOY IN YOUR PRESENCE.' [29] "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. [30] Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, [31] he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. Conclusion: “You will not be able to understand the authority in the Name of Jesus until you understand that Jesus tasted spiritual death and satisfied the claims of justice on behalf of each on of us when He died as our substitute.” - Bro. Hagin, “The Name of Jesus” When Jesus was in hell, God said, “It is enough,” and then He raised Jesus up from hell and the grave. He took His spirit and soul out of hell and raised His

Did Jesus oppose Judaism and come to replace it with his brand-new religion of Christianity? Was ancient Judaism a legalistic religion of works-righteousness? Did Jesus make the Law obsolete? Many people assume the answer to all these questions is yes. But is that true? In this video, we tackle these questions, building the case that the way Jesus teaches, lives, and debates situates him within Second Temple Judaism. Pastor Andy Stanley precisely articulates the way many Christians answer the questions above. So, in this video, we interact with some of the points he makes in his book, Irresistible: Reclaiming the New that Jesus Unleashed for the World. 0:00 - Intro 2:54 - What did "Judaism" mean during the time of Jesus? 4:33 - The fundamental problem with the idea that Jesus opposed Judaism 6:54 - Jesus teaches the heart of the Torah (Mark 12.30-31) 13:57 - Jesus wears tzitzit and tefillin (Matt 9.20; 23.5) 15:25 - Jesus observes Jewish traditions 16:13 - Jesus debates with Pharisees on what is lawful on the Sabbath (Matt 12.11-13) 28:11 - Was ancient Judaism a legalistic religion of works-righteousness? 35:38 - Did Jesus make the Law obsolete? Earlier this year, Reverend Brandan Robertson came out with a Tik Tok video claiming that Jesus was a racist. In a later YouTube video with Dr. Miguel De La Torre, he elaborates that Jesus inherited his racism from his Jewish community. De La Torre makes these same claims in this video and in his sermon, “Was Jesus a Racist?” Their teaching is not just historically and exegetically wrong; it fuels anti-Semitism, which is unfortunately on the rise today. This is my response. 0:00 – Introduction and Thesis Statement 4:22 – Gentiles as animals in Peter's vision (Acts 10.11-16) 8:07 – Jews and Gentiles as animals in the Tanakh (Jeremiah 50.6; Psalm 79.13; Isaiah 11.6) 9:25 – Jesus calls Jewish people animals (Matthew 15.24) 9:56 – Jews and Gentiles as animals in 1 Enoch 90 12:46 – Gentiles as animals in Mark 7.27 13:34 – Why did Jesus prioritize ministering to Jews during his earthly ministry? 15:52 – Why did Jesus call the Gentile woman a dog? 16:22 – Brandan Robertson's and Dr. Miguel De La Torre's claim that Jesus inherited his racism from his Jewish community 18:00 – Dr. Miguel De La Torre's sermon, “Was Jesus a Racist?” 20:30 – Was Jesus white? 22:35 – Did Jesus exclude Gentiles from God's plan of salvation? 25:18 – Was Jesus's Jewish community racist? 31:22 – Conclusion _________________________________________ You can also listen on our YouTube Channel Follow us on Social Media: Facebook Instagram Support links: SubscribeStar: https://www.subscribestar.com/two-messianic-jews PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/2messianicjews Merch shop: https://www.teespring.com/stores/two-messianic-jews-merch _________________________________________ Reverend Brandan Robertson's original Tik Tok video - "Was Jesus Racist?" Weightloss Mindset

Hello, I'm Rick Taylar, and this is Weight Loss Mindset! Ever lost weight and then put it all back on again? It's like your own body is fighting against you? How can you win this struggle with yourself without too much suffering? The most crucial time you need to be aware of when losing weight is just after you've lost some. Why? Because the body wants it back! It's not easy keeping off the weight after a diet. Most, if not all, people who lose weight stack it back on. The worst part is, they put on more weight. Isn't that horrible? Here's the simple reason you regain your weight Losing weight reduces your stored fat and energy stores. It sets off a chain reaction and triggers your hormones to let your brain know the amount of fat in the body is at a critical level. There's a hormone called leptin. Your fat cells make this hormone to decrease your appetite. So, of course, when you have less fat, the appetite suppression is lifted, and the cravings start. Don't give up. It's not over just yet. I know that all sounds like bad news when you desperately want to lose weight, but don't leave feeling defeated just yet. Change your mindset and realize the body isn't sabotaging you. It's only making you aware of what you're up against. When you know what you're up against, you can take measures to counteract the natural responses of the body, so you don't regain your lost weight. You can do this using behavioral or environmental interventions. Different kinds of foods and supplements reduce hunger and don't contain lots of calories. Things like Protein-rich foods and fiber-rich foods. Try drinking enough water before every meal. Try eating slower over 20 minutes, so your body has time to feel satisfied. There's a great article called - 18 Science-Based Ways to Reduce Hunger and Appetite. I'll give you a link in the show notes for this episode. Go to the website at weightlossmindset.co, and you'll find it. Some excellent nutritional supplements stimulate the brain to help suppress the appetite. They're worth a try for that added support. I'll make a note of the best ones for you in the show notes for this episode. Conclusion You've worked hard to lose some weight, and it's starting to come back. Don't panic and give up at this critical stage. Understand it's merely your body's natural response to the process. Don't let your body win, though. You're fighting against your body's natural response. As you start losing weight, your calorie needs drop too. Remember, if you were 200 pounds when you started and you've lost 20 pounds already, you must reduce your calorie intake considerably more than a person who began their diet at 180 pounds. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/weightloss-mindset/message

Today is part 2 of 12 Strategies to Stop Toxic People from Driving You Nuts!. 7 Focus on what’s going RIGHT more than what’s going WRONG. Gratitude, grace and giving will prevail when you focus on what you’re here to give more than what’s here to take. When someone slips through your filter but they’re still your client, especially when you have them in contract, it’s your job to follow through for them! Be the solution, not a continuation of the problem. Get back to a place of being of service. Sometimes you have to get out of your own way...this means setting your ego aside and simply doing your job. Your clients trust you to lead the way, even if they don’t verbalize this to you. They don’t know how to ask for help, but know that they crave your leadership. PROFIT is the result of your leadership and skill. 8 Know that you’re in good company. There’s not a top producing agent in the country who hasn’t had to deal with toxic people. The best ones learn from those relationships and take steps to minimize them in the future. 9 Challenge yourself to make it a game of being one step ahead until you close. Remember what you’re making to deal with the situation. Chances are you’re still making good money per hour, so put on those big girl panties and get to work! 10 Know that 9 out of 10 times, toxic people don’t mean it. Real estate is far more stressful to the average Joe or Josephine than it is to you. It’s the biggest, most serious transaction they’ve ever done. The tendency is to freak out and come unglued, NOT to become a meditative, calm Buddha. Be there for your clients even if they’re driving you crazy. They’re stressed. Have some compassion. Conclusion: You can’t pre-qualify toxic people completely out of your life and business, but you can take steps to minimize the times you deal with them. You can learn from the experiences and be inspired to generate more business so you have to tolerate less toxic prospects. Secret: Increase your skill set to protect your mindset. In this episode of Becoming You, Visa shares one mind-blowing truth that will set you free in life and bring you back to a state of peace. She'll then share simple, yet actionable tips you can practice today to improve your mindset and your outlook on life. You have thoughts, but your thoughts are not always true. You have thoughts, but you are not your thoughts. We think that just because we are the ones experiencing our thoughts, they must be true and we must believe them.  It's important to realize that we can have multiple voices inside our heads having conversations which each other. It doesn't mean you're a crazy person! It just means that there are several lines of thought that are constantly happening all the time. That's why we often have conflicting thoughts. It's totally normal. Not every thought you have is true and none of our thoughts are original.  “I'm not lovable” “I'm not smart enough” “I can't do this” “I'm not good enough” Sound familiar? You get to choose which thoughts you believe and which thoughts you release. It's very powerful to practice detaching yourself and freeing yourself from your thoughts. Try this just for one day or even one hour and see how it affects how you feel. Meditation is a great tool for putting distance between you and your thoughts. Every thought you have is based on a memory from the past. Once we believe a thought, we start to collect evidence to affirm that thought. This compounding self-harm makes you believe that you can't change and that your future won't look different from what it is today. If you constantly hold onto certain thoughts, then your future is going to look quite the same, unless you look at your thoughts objectively and choose to change them. So, now what? Your thoughts drive every action and inaction in your life. Taking action can feel hard to do, but the moment you become aware of the thought that's holding you back is the most divine moment to change that thought and open the door to the endless possibilities life has for you. You are in charge, so take charge! “Every single thought you have, it either is helping you become more of the person you want to be or it's slowing you down or pulling you back from the person you want to be.” Visa encourages you to incorporate positive affirmations into your morning when you're laying in bed just after waking up, which will help to improve your mindset for the rest of the day.  Here are a few examples: “I trust myself” “It's safe for me to be myself” “I am so worthy and deserving of all that I desire in my life”  Conclusion: You have thoughts, but your thoughts are not always true. You have thoughts, but you are not your thoughts. Not every thought you have is true and none of our thoughts are original. You are in charge of whether you believe your thoughts or not and whether you have positive or negative self-talk. Keep tuning in to Becoming You to continue learning how to foster a strong, healthy relationship with yourself with actionable tips to implement in your own life so you can feel free and safe to be yourself.  If you enjoyed this episode and found it insightful, screenshot this episode, share it on Instagram, and tag Visa – let's start a conversation! In this first episode of Becoming You, Visa tells her transformational story that starts when she was a child, being noticed for all the ‘wrong' reasons and playing by all the rules, and to be continued as a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser who is thriving as a mindset transformation coach. After a lifetime of striving for the perfect life, two babies, a great career, and a happily arranged marriage, she began feeling unsatisfied and unexcited about her life. Despite the immense gratitude she felt for the things she had, Visa felt unfulfilled and wondered, is there more to life? Visa knew she was capable of more and had more to offer to the world, but she had no clue how to begin on that journey. She tried to ignore these thoughts and feelings, which led to resentment, loneliness, and leaving her corporate job when her first child was born. She thought that starting her own business would fix many of her problems and since making that leap, it's been a rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship and discovery. That first step was the step she needed to take to dive deep into herself. How to Show Up for a Coaching Membership

You have finally made the big step to invest in yourself and your business by signing up for a coaching membership. Things are going great in the beginning. You're showing up to every coaching call, you're completing the monthly trainings, and you're collaborating with other members. But then your business picks up, you're drowning in the amount of work you have to do, and your coaching calls are starting to take a backseat. I get it. It's tough to juggle everything, but it's important to remember that you are also a priority. So, here are three tips on how to navigate a coaching membership. Commit to the Cause Before you get overwhelmed by the amount of work you need to get done or the projects you have to do, mark the coaching call times on the calendar beforehand, so you don't miss a live opportunity to chat. Get to know other members and listen in on coaching topics designed to help you grow. Treat yourself like you would treat a client. Set aside time in your calendar to do the things you need to do for your business to succeed. Often, business owners get caught up in their work for other people, and their own business falls to the wayside. Don't let that be you. You're just as important as your client, so make yourself a priority and commit to your new coaching membership. You will thank yourself later. Show Up For You Your coach may give you all the tools, but it's up to you to do the work. It's like the old saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink." You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to make your business the best it can be. If you're stuck, feeling insecure, unsure how to apply it to your product or services, I challenge you to ask for help from your coach or other members. That's why they're there. There's no shame in asking for help. You do what you have to do to turn your business into a successful one, so show up to the coaching calls because you will benefit from them. Show Support A community develops from supporting one another and helping each other grow. If you have feedback or maybe a solution you've used before - chime in and help your fellow members. Mark a 15-minute window a few times a week where you can intentionally pop into the Facebook group, browse what's going on, offer some support, or ask some questions you've had on your mind. More than likely, other people in the group have the same concerns or questions that you do. You're there to receive support just as much as you give it, so help support fellow members who may be feeling a little lost in their entrepreneurial journey. Conclusion You get out of a coaching membership as much as you put in. Make it a priority to keep up with the program because it genuinely can benefit you and your business if you stick with it. A lot of times, the people who don't see any change are the ones who stopped showing up for themselves. It takes discipline and consistency, but your business is just as important as the next. Continue to show up for your coaching membership each month like you did when you signed up. If you feel like you've been in business too long, and you're still not reaching your goals, send us a message on Instagram. Let's talk about what we can do to change that. I've been there, and that's why I developed these systems and strategies for the Creative Boss Society. It will give you the tools to reach your new goals quickly and a pace you can manage.

Rabbi Tovia Singer argues that in Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus claims that if one is even tempted to commit adultery, then they have already committed the sin. Jesus's point, therefore, is that the Torah is impossible to follow. In this video, we respond to this argument and show why Rabbi Singer is misunderstanding Jesus. Note: The argument made in this video is that the Torah is possible to keep, and Jesus expects his Jewish followers to observe it. There are other questions that are certainly worth addressing. Which commandments are exclusively for Jews? Which commandments are possible to observe today? If Gentiles are required to follow the commandments not to covet or commit adultery, why are they not obligated to keep the Sabbath? These and many more questions will be discussed in future videos! 0:00 – Intro 0:48 – Rabbi Tovia Singer's Argument 3:08 – Reading in context – Matthew 5:17-20 4:06 – What does “abolish” mean? 5:05 – What does “fulfill” mean? 7:37 – What is the purpose of Matthew 5:17-20? 8:15 – Is Jesus contradicting the Torah? 11:04 – Presentation of Dr. Jason Staples's reading of Matthew 5:27-28 11:15 – Jesus is pointing back to the tenth commandment. 12:54 – What did "lust" mean in the first century? 13:45 – A better translation of Matthew 5:28 16:12 – What is Jesus saying? 17:11 - Conclusion You can also listen on our YouTube channel Follow us on Social Media: Facebook Instagram Support links: SubscribeStar PayPal Merch shop Rabbi Tovia Singer's video, "Did Jesus in Fact Come to Destroy the Law? In Romans 10:17, we read, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." The Greek word from which the English translators translated the word, "word," in this passage really means, "Command." So faith can only be obtained by "hearing," but one can only hear by God's Command. Conclusion: You can ONLY come to faith when God commands it, as opposed to customary thinking that faith can be the result our anemic and bondage-bearing WILLS.

Why Feedback?

Mp3: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Why-Ask-for-Feedback.mp3 --- Why Feedback? When should we ask for feedback? When shouldn't we ask for feedback? Why do we ask for feedback, towards what end? Are you a newbie? First of all, my psychological thought: When we ask for feedback, we are signaling that we lack self-confidence in ourselves. When we ask for feedback, we acknowledge that the other person is smarter than us, or we perceive them as more knowledgeable or powerful than us. Do we not want to take responsibility for ourselves and actions? Another thought: When we ask others for feedback, we want someone to blame (if we end up screwing up or failing). Perhaps this is why companies hire consultants: If a company institutes a new policy, and the policy is bad, they are able to transfer liability to the consultant (easy to blame the consultant). Kind of like scapegoating. How much faith do you have in yourself? Consider a life in which you never asked for feedback. Can you still live a great life? Yes! Also -- one of the benefits of NOT asking for help or feedback: More interesting and unique self-experimentation (innovation). For example, I mostly ignored everything on the internet about powerlifting. I just do heavy singles and attempt new PR's (usually once a week). It is against all conventional wisdom in powerlifting, but it seems to have been working for me. Another thing -- intermittent fasting during the day, and not breaking my fast until later the day (after working out). I also have done all my powerlifting in a fasted state for almost the last 5 years, which is also seen as a "no-no" (we are indoctrinated with the notion that you must eat something BEFORE working out, but this is not true). So perhaps the benefit of NOT asking others for feedback is that you are more likely to discover NEW TRUTHS, which are contrary to conventional wisdom. When is it useful to ask for feedback? If you need new ideas, and a novel perspective. For example in photography, I wanted to know how to improve! I felt like I hit a wall in terms of self-improvement, and in order to take it to the NEXT LEVEL, I wanted to elicit the feedback from others. Much of this inspiration is what fueled arsbeta.com -- the desire to 'crowd-source' the 'wisdom of the crowds' to empower photographers from all around the planet. Essentially, creating a platform which I wish I had access to when I started photography. Conclusion You don't need to ask for feedback in order to improve. Don't ask for feedback if you just are looking for someone to blame if you fail. Ask for "tips" (suggestions) from others, but ultimately you decide whether to obey their feedback/ideas or not. You choose. If you feel like you're stuck in your growth, hit a plateau, and need an outside perspective, ask for feedback, suggestions, and help! GROW ON! ERIC

God's End Game - Part 40 We are now into the final play of God's End Game: the second coming of Jesus Christ or the Return of the King. Our theology book defines it this way… The doctrine of the second coming describes the expected return of Jesus Christ at the end of time, when he will come to judge the world and usher in the fullness of his kingdom. We've covered in a general sense the last part about ushering in the fullness his kingdom. God's kingdom was temporarily overthrown by the devil in the garden, something God allowed. God's end game plan is all about restoring that kingdom. The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus ushered in the kingdom and his second coming finalizes it. We also got a pretty good picture of what will happen at the end of the age (AKA the Last Day), at least as far as it concerns us: Jesus will descend from heaven (dimension not altitude) at the sound of a trumpet. He'll have with him those believers who have died. They will get their new resurrection bodies first. Then those who are alive at his coming rise up to get their resurrection bodies as well. We all will forever be with the Lord There's another part of our theological statement we haven't looked at yet: he will come to the judge the world. That seems to be a contradiction if you look at what is probably the least known verse in the Bible, John 3:17. I say least known because most folks stop at what is probably the most well known verse, John 3:16. John 3:16–17 (ESV) — 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Jesus also said… John 12:47 (ESV) — 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. Catch the seeming contradiction? This is reconciled by looking at Jesus' mission according to which of his comings we're talking about. The first time Jesus came, which is found in the Christmas story, it was about saving us from our sins… Matthew 1:20–21 (ESV) — 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” How will he save us from our sins? By allowing himself to be crucified on a cross, by taking our sins upon himself as the Lamb of God. That's one of Jesus' many titles. It has to do with the Passover Lamb that was sacrificed so the angel of death would pass over the Israelites in the 10th plague. A lamb was also sacrificed daily in the temple to take away the sins of the people. John the Baptist saw Jesus as the Lamb of God… John 1:29 (ESV) — 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Paul did too… 1 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV) — 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. As did the apostle John is his Revelation… Revelation 5:6–14 (ESV) — 6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped. Jesus' mission as it relates to his first coming was about saving us from our sins as the gentle, meek, self-sacrificing Lamb of God. The mission as it relates to the second coming is a different story. In Revelation we see this… Revelation 19:11–16 (ESV) — 11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. There's another name for Jesus, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and in this text we see that Jesus set to wage war. What a contrast to the Lamb. Along with waging war, Jesus returns to judge the earth and everyone on it… Revelation 20:11–15 (ESV) — 11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. As God's End Game plays out towards the end, all people will be judged. It's called in theological terms The Final Judgment… This doctrine affirms that when Christ, the merciful and righteous king of the earth, returns, all human beings will be held accountable for their lives, resulting in eternal condemnation or eternal blessedness. So, there's really no contradiction when you look a things according to the mission. There's the Lamb of God mission with the first coming and the King of Kings mission with the Second Coming. The first mission was to save and the second will be to wage war and judge. How all this fits into a schedule of the End Times I don't know. I know we'd like to know. As I've mentioned, there's a whole industry, a franchise in Christianity focusing on providing timelines and such. It sells movies and books. One scholar warns though… “Great caution is required when studying subjects within [the End Times]… The Bible gives few details, and those often in passing; it does not set out a detailed plan or pattern of divine action at the end of this passing age. As always, Christian theologians must be careful not to presume to know more than God has revealed.” But what God has revealed is enough isn't it? What we can know is what we need to know. At the end of God's End Game is the Final Judgment for all, for everyone who has ever lived since the beginning of time. This makes me think about how everybody likes to categorize people into two groups. There are two kinds of people in the world:  Those who make things complicated, and those who make things simple. “There are basically two types of people. People who accomplish things, and people who claim to have accomplished things. The first group is less crowded.” – Mark Twain There are two kinds of people in the world: the Givers and the Takers. There are two kinds of people in the world:  Pessimists and Optimists. There are two kinds of people in the world:  Those who follow the rules and those who make the rules. There are two kinds of people in the world:  Players and Haters. There are three kinds of people in the world: Those who know math and those who don't. In reality, you can't divide folks into just two groups. The world and the people who live in it are too complex for that. But in the end, the final judgment really does make for two kinds of people in the world: those going to be with God forever and those not. Those whose names written in the Book of Life and those not. Those going to live in the New Heavens and Earth and those going to hell. Yes, Pastor Brad just said the “h” word. Is he really going to go there? Talking about hell in church has gone out of style. It's become taboo in a way. If I'm going to be honest, I sense that pressure. I'd rather not talk about it. But if I'm going to be fair in sharing with you what God has revealed in his Word, I have to. It's not popular, I know, but it's all over the Bible. It's as much a part of God's End Game as the resurrection and the New Heavens and Earth and everything else. Conclusion: You know, God has kind of dealt with me over the years on the teaching of hell. Not so much what it is but how I present it, how I preach on it. For many years when I preached on hell I did so in a spirit of pride, as if I was doing God a favor, like when the principal makes you the hall monitor and you get to enforce the rules written in the handbook. I wasn't worried about going to hell after all. Western Christianity as a whole for a very long time has majored on fire and brimstone preaching scented with a hint of pride, I believe. Which is partly why it's gone out of style. But I've come to realize how wrong it is to be puffed up about hell, to use it as a stone to hurl at the heathens. Yes, by God's grace I don't have to worry about it. Yes, God is just to judge, and I will show you how necessary and right hell is soon. But how can my heart not break at the thought of anyone going there? The Word of God reveals his heart on the matter… 1 Timothy 2:1–4 (ESV) — 1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Peter 3:8–9 (ESV) — 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. Ezekiel 18:23 (ESV) — 23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? In the coming weeks as we are able I'm going to cover the hell and final judgment part of God's End Game plan, as humbly and as sensitively as I can. I'm going to show you how no one's actually in hell yet just as no one is actually in heaven (not as we understand it). And then, finally, I'm going to take us into the glories of the New Heavens and Earth, something I've been itching to do from the beginning. But here's something I want you to think about today… All our destinies depend on what we've done with the Lamb of God. If we wait until the King of Kings returns it's too late.

Jesus’ mission as it relates to his first coming was about saving us from our sins as the gentle, meek, self-sacrificing Lamb of God. There’s another name for Jesus, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and in this text we see that Jesus set to wage war. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. As God’s End Game plays out towards the end, all people will be judged. It’s called in theological terms The Final Judgment… This doctrine affirms that when Christ, the merciful and righteous king of the earth, returns, all human beings will be held accountable for their lives, resulting in eternal condemnation or eternal blessedness. So, there’s really no contradiction when you look a things according to the mission. There’s the Lamb of God mission with the first coming and the King of Kings mission with the Second Coming. The first mission was to save and the second will be to wage war and judge. How all this fits into a schedule of the End Times I don’t know. I know we’d like to know. As I’ve mentioned, there’s a whole industry, a franchise in Christianity focusing on providing timelines and such. It sells movies and books. One scholar warns though… “Great caution is required when studying subjects within [the End Times]… The Bible gives few details, and those often in passing; it does not set out a detailed plan or pattern of divine action at the end of this passing age. As always, Christian theologians must be careful not to presume to know more than God has revealed.” But what God has revealed is enough isn’t it? What we can know is what we need to know. At the end of God’s End Game is the Final Judgment for all, for everyone who has ever lived since the beginning of time. There are three kinds of people in the world: Those who know math and those who don’t. In reality, you can’t divide folks into just two groups. It’s become taboo in a way. If I’m going to be honest, I sense that pressure. I’d rather not talk about it. But if I’m going to be fair in sharing with you what God has revealed in his Word, I have to. It’s not popular, I know, but it’s all over the Bible. It’s as much a part of God’s End Game as the resurrection and the New Heavens and Earth and everything else. I wasn’t worried about going to hell after all. Western Christianity as a whole for a very long time has majored on fire and brimstone preaching scented with a hint of pride, I believe. Which is partly why it’s gone out of style. But I’ve come to realize how wrong it is to be puffed up about hell, to use it as a stone to hurl at the heathens. Yes, by God’s grace I don’t have to worry about it. In the coming weeks as we are able I’m going to cover the hell and final judgment part of God’s End Game plan, as humbly and as sensitively as I can. I’m going to show you how no one’s actually in hell yet just as no one is actually in heaven (not as we understand it). And then, finally, I’m going to take us into the glories of the New Heavens and Earth, something I’ve been itching to do from the beginning. But here’s something I want you to think about today… All our destinies depend on what we’ve done with the Lamb of God. If we wait until the King of Kings returns it’s too late.

The Goodbye Packet Last week I told you about Client Offboarding, the process of finalising a design project and preparing a client for working together again in the future. Offboarding is a way of informing a client that you’ve completed the work they’ve paid you for, and any additional work from this point forward will be considered a new project, incurring further fees. In this last part of the Client Onboarding series, I’m talking about the Goodbye Packet, a way to collect and package up all the offboarding information in a convenient package to hand over to your client. What is a Goodbye Packet? A Goodbye Packet is a document informing a client their project is complete. It lets them know that any additional work you do will incur extra charges. You can also use it as a transition phase between your web design contract and your maintenance package. If a client continues to ask for changes after the completion of a web design project, it’s a good indication that you should sell them an ongoing maintenance package if you haven’t already done so. In brief; a well put together Goodbye Packet should accomplish the following: Informs the client of the completion of their project, stopping them from asking for more changes. Thanks the client for choosing you as their designer showing how grateful you are. Instructs the client how to access their deliverables such as downloading asset files or logging in to their website and any other relevant accounts. Teaches the client how to use their website. Relays essential details about their design project. Encourages the client to hire you for more design work in the future (or right away if you can manage it) Answers common questions most clients have at the end of a project. Shows the client how professional you are, which will make them more likely to refer you to others and to use you again in the future. Unlike the Intro Packet, which is a document about you and your business, a Goodbye Packet is all about the client. It’s about making it easy for the client to transition to using whatever it is you created for them. Where the intro Packet is handed out to all clients showing them your services and design skills, the Goodbye Packet is a document customised to each specific client. There are pieces of it you can reuse again and again, but overall, it should be unique to the client receiving it. How to create a Goodbye Packet A Goodbye Packet is a document you create for your client. It could be a printed booklet, a Word document, A PDF, A dedicated page in a password protected client area of your website, or even something as simple as an email. The platform you use to create your Goodbye Packet is not as important as the information that goes into one. However, no matter the platform you use, do make it look good. You are a designer, after all. Some sections of your Goodbye Packet can be reused from client to client with minor changes. Creating templates for them can save you time and save you having to create each one from scratch — website login instructions, for example. The instructions to log into a website are the same for all sites; it’s just the URL, Username and Password that changes. Contents of a Goodbye Packet Think of your Goodbye Packet as a small booklet, whether it’s printed, a PDF or a web page. Here's what it should contain: Cover:The Goodbye Packet is all about the client and should be recognisable as such. Design the cover with the client’s colours and branding. Introduction:Give an overview of what information the client will find in the packet and why it’s crucial they hold onto it. Access Info:Provide login information for websites or any other accounts you created for the client. Make sure they know to keep this information safe. Better yet, provide them with a temporary password and instructions on how to change it. Quick Reference:A cheat sheet if you will. This section should contain information such as font families, Colour codes/values, Image guidelines for the website, branding do’s and don’ts. Think of this as a mini style guide. Tutorials:Provide links to online resources or written or video tutorials you’ve produced yourself showing the client how to use their new product. Additional Services:Remind the client that you are available for further work should they need you. Also, remind them of other services they may not be aware you offer. FAQ:Provide answers to commonly asked questions. Such as the importance of keeping a website updated (if they haven’t hired you to maintain it for them). Or when to use different file formats. Conclusion:You should end your Goodbye Packet by thanking your client for hiring you and letting them know you are there for them should they require your services again. Don’t forget to ask the client for a testimonial. Why use a Goodbye Packet? Why take the time to dress it up when you can send a simple email with this information? It’s all about exceeding the client’s expectations, a crucial part of building a long-lasting relationship. A Goodbye Packet is a simple extra step that most businesses don’t provide. Your clients will notice and appreciate it, which means they will be more inclined to spread the word about the great services you offer. It’s a great way to mark the finish of a project, minimise revisions and questions, and finally, set your client up for success. So what are you waiting for? Today’s Say What Wednesday question is from Paul; “Hey fellas! I think you guys are doing a great a job. Always a fun listen. Question; I was wondering your thoughts on the world of FI (financial independence) which is getting more momentum, to the likes of Mr Money Mustache and other FIRE? Have you taken a similar approach to these people with your own personal finance, having savings rates as high as or higher than 50% of total take home income?” For those who don’t know: Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) i.e. Save and invest most of your income now I really like the idea of Financial Independence and employ it myself to avoid the hedonic treadmill creep. I set a base living standard and then invest everything I earn on top of this figure. Whilst I was PAYG a little while ago I was saving between 50-60% of my income and investing it, with a decent chunk being salary sacrificed. I've been in the process of setting up a new business in the past 18 months which put a dint in the ability to save, but hope to get back to that level shortly. I always reinvest income from investments – starts to make up a larger component of your income. Keeping things simple – It is hard to get to that point – But with one simple trick you can start working in the right direction. It starts with, ‘How to not care about what I have, or how I relate to others’ Where it comes from – Spending habits – Shopping, cars, etc.  Dopamine – Reward system – Buying something is the easiest way to get this Serotonin – Status symbols – feeling higher up in the social picking order Money provides both of these thing – But only in what others can see Dopamine is easier to do. Focus on savings every month and get your hit of dopamine when you achieve the target Serotonin is harder to do. It does require a bit more self-confidence (self-esteem) to be happy not chasing the way out through buying things. If you’re constantly looking at what other people have you’ll always be unhappy – there is always someone else with more. Why you can never really tell who has real wealth just by looking at them (or if it is funded through debt and cashflow) Met a guy who owns a helicopter, every time I saw him he was in old sneakers, old t-shirt. What you can do Play a game - You can think of it as tricking people – turn the game around and as long as you know are making yourself wealthy, and not others buying their stuff it can work. Endowment effect – Put more value to what you already own Turn it into thinking about Keeping your money – put a premium on your spending habits Essentials – 0% Non-essentials – Gross the price up by a factor: Example - New TV is $3,000 – Life of TV is 10 years Earn 7% on that over the same time - is the TV worth $6,000? Thinking in terms of future value and opportunity cost To part with it, the item better be worth it Conclusion You don’t have to live like a pauper – enjoy your life with great experiences. But, just next time you’re looking at a big splurge on something, gross up the value and see if it is still worth it!

Listen Here: iTunes | Overcast Keep Up with the North Star Podcast Introduction My guest today is Sara Dietschy, a YouTuber and content creator based in New York City.  With more than 300,000 subscribers, Sara’s created a docu-series, a daily vlog and recently launched a new podcast called The Creative Exchange. Sara is one of the most inspiring people I know. Before she moved to New York, Sara grew up in Dallas, went to college to study computer science, dropped out, and moved to Nashville. Through her work, Sara explores the intersection of technology and creativity. Sara rocks the YouTube scene with her sincerity and a contagious zest for life.  The internet spells the end of oppressive creative regimes, the death of gatekeepers and the fall of Hollywood. On the Internet, agility is essential. In this day in age, vlogs showcase the everyday experiences of real people with real stories that exist in real life.  We live at a time where people have deep and intimate relationships with their favorite YouTubers — people they’ve never met before that feel like their best friends. Millennials and Gen Z have the luxury to ask what is my passion and use the internet to build a career. On the internet, people want to connect with individuals, not massive companies or a bland television ad. They want to connect with people, not companies, and it’s influencers like Sara that are leading the charge. In this episode, Sara explains how she rose to Youtube stardom and the characteristics she’s noticed between herself and other successful influencers.  Sara and I go back to her time as a musician — an on-stage performer who played in front of large audiences. We talk about all the Sundays Sara spent at a local Megachurch in Dallas, where she played in a band and was blown away by top-notch production quality.  We discuss what it means to do work you love, and the power of staying busy, how Sara’s built a career around the vlogosphere. Finally, we talk about her first viral moments, how she forced herself to become extroverted and the takeover of new media.  Links Sara’s Youtube Channel Sara’s Podcast, The Creative Exchange Sara’s Instagram Sara’s Twitter Sara’s Facebook Sara’s Website Sara on Medium Time Stamps 1:27 Sara talks about who she is and what to expect from her Youtube channel 2:14 How Sara turned from a basketball-loving tomboy into a musician 6:39 Sara’s first love and how it gave her the most creative highs of her career thus far 7:28 Her transition from music to videography and how her church was the driving factor for her moving behind the lens 10:08 Her move to Nashville and how she leveraged value in turn for artist’s time for her first docu-series called Creative Spaces 11:35 Sara’s belief that the harder you work the luckier you get and how she notices serendipity in her life the more she works towards her goals 12:50 Sara’s, very calculated, first viral moments featuring TWO shoutouts from Casey Neistat 17:01 Sara talks about her passion for creativity and what motivates her throughout the process 18:20 The one characteristic Sara has found in common amongst all of her passionate friends and interviewees 24:36 The three pillars Sara believes makes a good Youtube channel 26:26 Sara’s Youtube career, from 0 to over 300,000 followers 33:09 Sara talks about why audiences relate to an individual over a brand 36:22 The clear divide between Hollywood and new media, as proven by the Cannes Film Festival 39:52 Sara’s rule to always be working on something or learning about topics outside of her job in order to have that essential escape 45:40 The changes happening in New York City and Sara’s prediction that Hudson Yards is becoming the next Midtown 50:32 How our ecosystem is built around cars and how storytellers may impact the sharing economy 51:41 Where Sara’s inspiration comes from and how she works with deadlines 55:53 How Sara trained herself to become more extroverted so she could meet more creatives 58:32 Sara’s vision for the future and her perspective to see it as a never-ending journey 1:00:24 How Sara sees her future on Youtube Quotes “Serendipity I think is huge. Being in a place where things are happening is a big deal. If you want to make music videos for country stars for the rest of your life, you have to be in Nashville. If you want to be a creative business type and you want flavors from different industries, be in New York. If you want strictly entertainment and acting, you have to be in LA. I fully believe in location helping tremendously.” “Everyone who is doing something that they love, and it’s never all rainbows and butterflies, but to the people who are doing what they love-it’s because they have gone through so many things before that to figure out what they want to be doing now. I think a lot of people wait around, and wait for something to hit them. They wait for their passion to hit them and it so doesn’t happen that way.” “I myself, as much as a person who creates it and consumes it, am so much more motivated by people in the real world. Instead of watching Wolf of Wall Street, I’m going to watch a couple of Gary Vaynerchuk Vlogs. I am way more inspired by seeing the behind the scenes of a CEO in real life than a fabricated story of this crazy Wall Street dude.” “I think if you just have these huge massive goals-like one massive goal every five years-I don’t think it’s the healthiest thing. If you don’t achieve it, you’re destroyed. If you do achieve it, you’re going to be empty inside and be like, what’s next? I always have these miniature things in my head, I want to meet these five people, I want to do these five things. If they happen sick, if they don’t, move on to the next thing. It’s taught me to be stoked on the journey because you’re never going to arrive.” Conclusion You can support the North Star Podcast by leaving a review on iTunes. This episode is for anyone who wants to effectively orchestrate a development process without becoming the butt of their team’s water-cooler jokes. It's more attainable than you think, because it's all about process. Don't be a Bill Lumbergh - be awesome. Written and read by Jonathan Solórzano-Hamilton: https://twitter.com/jhsolor Original article: https://fcc.im/2GW6xFX Learn to code for free at: https://www.freecodecamp.org Intro music by Vangough: https://fcc.im/2APOG02 Transcript: Laurence Peter formulated the principle that “managers rise to the level of their incompetence” in 1969. In particular, non-technical leaders have earned a poor reputation with software developers. Office Space depicts the non-technical manager in Bill Lumbergh, pictured above. Dilbert provides the classic “Pointy-Haired Boss.” This article is for anyone who wants to effectively orchestrate a development process without becoming the butt of your team’s water-cooler jokes. I’ll share what I’ve learned over the years managing development and release processes as a manager and software architect at UCLA and Stanford University. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the key to sustaining successful software releases is completely non-technical. It’s about process. Some aspects of a development process benefit from technical know-how, but it’s not required. Successfully releasing software into production is much more a question of robust process architecture than design or code alone. For the purpose of this article, we’ll assume you’ve already agreed to start building something. The product approval pipeline is a different process. Today we’re focusing on getting the agreed-upon product from concept to production. What to build Your team needs to assemble a clear roadmap for their code. Architects and manufacturers use blueprints. You should too. Your roadmap should include a set of schematics which each fulfill a different purpose. These schematics differ for individual applications. A user-interface mock-up, application architecture diagram, and business process model are common. More detailed component diagrams such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams and flow models are often useful as well. Technical expertise lets you use these schematics to critique your team’s architecture and ensure they’re on the right track. Even without technical skill, these schematics will be critical. You can use them to drive productive conversations about product completion. No more will you have to draw a “% complete” out of thin air or best-guess from the development team. You can track the status of each item on the diagram to determine how close the app is to completion. You can also project future velocity based on how quickly the team completed prior components. There is no “right” amount of pre-development documentation, but there is one wrong amount: none. Work out with your team what constitutes an acceptable roadmap before they start coding. The first checkpoint in your development process will be to review this documentation and ensure they’ve met this agreement. What not to build Your team can’t build everything. Nor should they. You need to ensure that your developers have a laser focus on what they actually need to build. Why are you building this app in the first place? Define the key differentiation from existing products. 80% of your team’s time should go toward supporting that differentiation. The schematics you should now have will be helpful here. Does your application include a logging component? A sign-up and login process? There are already excellent free, open-source software (FOSS) frameworks in most languages for these components. Some are available under extremely permissive licenses. Tesla provides a great illustration of this concept. Their first key differentiator was to use a lithium-ion battery to make electric cars competitive with gas. Lithium-ion achieved this by reducing battery weight and increasing range. The first Tesla prototype simply converted a pre-existing electric sports car from lead-acid to lithium batteries. Their first production run was mostly a Lotus Elise roadster (a pre-existing sports car) that had a Tesla battery and motor. The lesson for your team is to use what already exists wherever possible. If you can use or adapt a FOSS package, do it. Even if you need to license for-pay code from somewhere else, it’s almost always worth it. Get all the scaffolding in place quickly so you can test your “lithium-ion battery.” Then you can iterate through and replace whatever will help further differentiate your product without stressing about delaying production-readiness. The second checkpoint of your development process is to review the planned architecture with your team and identify what very limited part they intend to build from scratch. If it sounds like something that already exists, and it’s not the core focus of your product, challenge your team to see why they believe they need to re-do it. Don’t just throw it over the wall Once you have identified what pre-built technologies you’ll use, make sure to review these with your production support group. Database and server administrators will need to plan for installing and supporting any new technologies. This is the third checkpoint in your development process: operations readiness. Keeping the production support team in the loop early is 90% of the secret sauce known as “DevOps.” If you haven’t heard of this, DevOps is the idea that software development and production operations teams should unify under common goals. The proposed benefits include much quicker releases, more reliable code, and more time spent developing due to automation. These are all great boons, but they follow from a strong communication process. Automation follows, not replaces, collaboration. Implementation and Testing Now your team writes the code. Collaborate with your implementation team to devise a process for dividing the work among themselves. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and this is where the “soft skills” of leadership dramatically outweigh any technical skill. Some developers will want to hog all the “interesting” work and ignore any drudge work. They may believe that they’re the smartest person in the room and should get their pick of assignments. Others may resist change and only want to do the same kind of work they’ve done before. Lead your team into an equitable distribution of work. Challenge everyone to grow appropriately and to share and collaborate. One more technical aspect of the implementation is that the code must include sufficient automated tests. These are code-defined tests that a test system can execute. If the code’s going to crash, don’t you want these guys’ resumes to be on the line instead of your own? (public domain: US Government photo) Manual “test scripts” where a human interacts with the code to see if it works are insufficient and reflect technical debt. Your technical team should at least include unit tests. Test-driven development is a popular approach for ensuring that critical code is always tested. You can drive a non-technical conversation with your team about their “test coverage” (the portion of the code that is tested). It’s pretty simple: ask them to list their assumptions. Then ask where and how they test these assumptions. The checkpoint at which the code is believed complete by the developers is referred to in my shop as dev-complete. It means the primary development (dev) process is over, but additional code may be written to address issues that come up in the review process. In an agile development process, you will typically divide the implementation process into multiple checkpoints instead of one all-or-nothing deadline. These are typically called iterations. Refer to the roadmap you defined in the first step. Before starting new component(s), ensure that what you’ve already started is at least dev-complete. This provides you with an accurate view of the speed of development and reduces risk. As you complete the iterations, you can push the code to an environment for “acceptance testing.” This involves pilot or test users (or an internal team playing that role) who interact with the partial product. They test to ensure it meets the design expectations and provide feedback on how it could be better. Acceptance testing is not a substitute for the unit testing mentioned earlier. It serves a different purpose. Letting your development team lean on acceptance testing to catch basic functional bugs is a recipe for disaster. Feedback from the acceptance testers can be incorporated into the next iteration. This is another good reason not to bite off a big chunk of the product all at once. You want to leave room to change course once people start playing with the product. Once you’ve accumulated enough tested code to constitute a sufficient product release, you’re ready to begin the release management process. Looking for bugs in all the right places Your developer or team has reached a point where they believe the code is done. Acceptance testers are satisfied with the way the product is working. The next checkpoint in the process is to validate the belief that you have code ready to become a product. Let’s start reviewing the code! You may not be comfortable or have sufficient technical know-how to review the team’s code yourself. That’s ok! You don’t have to. Your process has to. Work with your team to identify a process for code review that works for them. If you have more than one developer, peer code review works great. If you don’t, are there other developers in your organization outside of your team? Work across team boundaries to establish a peer code review program. If there really is only one developer, then sit down with them and have them walk you through the code. Use your schematics as a reference point, and ask them to tell you how the code accomplishes the schematic’s goals. At the conclusion of the code review process, the developer and reviewer(s) should feel comfortable with being held accountable for the code. The code review is also a good time for reviewing two other critical points: documentation and security. I’ve already written about a sustainable documentation architecture — check it out if you’re interested! Security review should be a part of any code review. In general, this involves taking a second look at the code to spot weaknesses where an attacker could exploit it to reveal private data or gain control of the server. It must be done by a technical person. The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) publishes a free comprehensive guide to security review. Your developer can do this if they’re the only one on the team, even if they just run an automated security code analysis tool. There are free tools for helping with this process which are linked through the OWASP wiki. Eject, eject, eject! The code has passed the review process. It’s ready to become a product. But that doesn’t mean it’s ready for production. The last checkpoint to clear is deployment readiness. Is your code in a state where it’s easy to deploy to production? This should involve as few manual steps as possible. It also means you need to have a plan for reverting the change in case the code doesn’t work as planned. This is called a “rollback plan.” If you have a separate software operations team, this is where they come back into the picture. They should review the deployment and rollback documentation and let you know if it’s sufficient. If you don’t have these personnel you can perform this step yourself. Make sure that there are clear, simple instructions for deploying the product. There should be very few manual steps, as each manual step introduces a chance for human error. There should be a clear, sufficient plan for returning to the prior state of affairs if the deployment doesn’t succeed. This may be as simple as restoring a backup, or it may involve customer communication or data conversion. Whether the plan is sufficient depends on how thoroughly your team tested the code, and how widely the product is being released. Consider also any risks associated with the product or with this particular release. Once you’ve passed this checkpoint, push that code into production! Post-release Succeed or fail, it’s important to circle back and review how the process went. Did your team accurately estimate the effort required to release a product? Did the testing adequately model the production scenario? Revisit the implementation and testing checkpoints, and review how well the team performed. How is the product running in production? It’s a good idea to visit the operations staff and obtain their feedback. This further creates trust between the development and operations teams, and will lead to more DevOps benefits down the road. Where are the remaining gaps in your product? If they’re in third-party code, now’s the time to consider whether to customize your packages or re-implement from scratch. Otherwise, you now have input on what to build for the next release. Above all, hold yourself and your team accountable for the results of your effort. Accountability facilitates independence and promotes individual growth. As your team grows accustomed to being held accountable for each step in this process, they’ll adjust their performance accordingly. Conclusion You don’t have to be the least bit technical to run a successful software release process. Technical skill can help, but it can also become a crutch. The key to successful software release is a well-documented, well-understood process for moving software through the pipeline from idea to product. You now have a starting point for drafting your own software release process. What’s most important is that you participate with your team in filling in the blanks and creating a repeatable process that works for all of you. It doesn’t have to be perfect for anyone, but it does have to be understood by everyone. You also need to ensure that the velocity of your product through these checkpoints matches the demand for the product. None of these items need to be multi-day show-stoppers. It could be a simple one-page checklist. You need to define a process that fits your environment. As with any process, you should also iterate. Just like with the code, your first, untested draft isn’t likely to be perfect. Tune the process on each run-through and you’ll end up with a smooth, predictable software release path. And remember to brush your hair. You don’t want it looking…pointy.

Ray Super Remote Just like a conductor's baton a good remote control is mandatory to conduct and direct the use of your home theater. We've reviewed so many over the years. Ara has settled on the Simple Control application running on an iPad Mini while Braden uses the Logitech Harmony Remotes around his home. But today we are taking a look at the Ray Super Remote (Buy Now $249) which creators bill as the “the ultimate touchscreen universal remote control”. Features Fast setup, responsive interface, high resolution display Sophisticated recommendation engine Rechargeable battery Support for Hue Lights and Nest Thermostats The Ray Super Remote is a nicely built piece of hardware. The fit and finish remind us of a high quality smartphone. In fact it's about the size of a smartphone of yesterday. It's a bit thicker and heavier. No biggie since you won't be carrying it around with you. Front and back are made of gorilla glass so it should stand up to wear and tear of daily use. And the occasional fall off the coffee table. The charging cradle also feels substantial and will sit firmly on your end table. The remote slides in and out with ease. We have gotten about two days battery use out of one charge with typical usage. But if you really go into the guides and recommendations pages you will probably get less. Fortunately it is simple to place the remote on the cradle every evening and have a fully charged remote in the morning. Setup This is an area where the remote excels. Setup up takes about 10 to 15 minutes. First you connect to Wifi and then let it download updates and codes. Next you tell it how you watch TV.  For this portion you have to be in front of your TV and have it on. In our case we turned on the TV, AV Receiver and Satellite box. The remote asks you tell it what kind of TV you have. Then it tells you that it will perform an action and you need to respond with yes it happened or no it did not. After a few of these it decides on a command set for the device and you are done. You do this for all your devices. You also tell it what input the TV and receiver are on so it can switch them for you. We setup our Blu-ray, AppleTV, DirecTV Genie, Receiver, and TV. The remote does not have FireTV capability. You can request that Ray adds the commands for equipment you have that is not supported through their website. In addition to lack of support for the FireTV there currently is no support for PlayStation, Roku stick, or Chromecast. Plus there is no support for multiple rooms. So if you want to use the remote in another room you will need to buy an additional remote. Use The remote works well! Although it took us a little time to get used to pointing the remote towards the TV. The Simple Control remote works from anywhere and you wouldn't think that is a big deal but it did become a bit annoying to have to remember this. That also means if your equipment is out of sight you will need an IR repeater. But you probably already have one anyway.  The commands went out quickly and the user interface is responsive. The volume control is done via a rocker on the side of the device. Nice tactile buttons to make raising the volume easy without having to look at the screen. There is also a physical mute button as well as a sleep/wake button. To activate an activity you go to the home screen and select it, DVR, Blu-ray, or AppleTV. The remote fires off the appropriate commands and in a few seconds you are watching what you want. The shutdown process is simple to. You hit the power off button and you are given an option to turn off any device that is currently on or all of them at once. We were concerned that a small screen with limited buttons would be difficult to use. We wouldn't call it difficult but it's a bit cumbersome. The main screen for the DVR has the transport controls, which while important are not used as often as changing channels or bringing up the guide and recordings list. For that there are customizable soft keys on the bottom of the screen. There are a few that are always visible but to get to all of them you have to swipe up. We found that the small form factor means you have to hit a few more screens to get to what you want. Still better than using four remotes.   When setting up your remote it asks you questions about what you like to watch and which channels you subscribe to. It then makes recommendations for you. To access these recommendations you hit the TV button on the home screen. You can swipe through your different categories, Movies, News, Sports, Etc, and find something to watch. If the show is currently on pressing the button will tune to that channel. If it's not on you can set a reminder or setup a recording. Note - The remote is capable of controlling Hue lights and the Nest Thermostat. We do not have these devices in our homes so we were not able to test these features. Conclusion You have a lot of choices out there for universal remotes. Some are pretty basic while others not only control your home theater but they also can do home automation. The Ray Super Remote is a great looking and fully featured remote that will indeed make controlling your home theater easier. It's easy to setup and controls almost any device you have. It's a little on the expensive side but like any conductor you need a baton and this device is one cool baton!
