This week I sit down with my mate "Norf", otherwise known as Paul Norford and we talk about soft skills and the art of presenting. This is really apt for our current situation, as many of us have to present now, whether it's on social media or on a remote call, it is a skill everyone could learn to develop. In this pod we discuss how we learnt, offer some tips and share some of Norfs stories and energy, this is a belter, mainly because Norfeus is a LEGEND! New Podcast episode! "The Dawn of the Dyslexics" with my man Ryan Conlan I am really excited about this episode for a few reasons: 1) Ryan has had a storming year, graduating with a 1st class honours degree, landing a new job at Google and giving a Ted X talk! (I appreciate that 2020 has been a tough and for some a tragic year but 1 thing I believe in is celebrating people and their successes, especially in adverse situations.) 2) We talk about Dyslexia, which we both have and which Ryan did his Ted talk on, and which could become more of a badge of honour as well as a carrer strength going into the 4th industrial revolution. 3) Ryan is my 1st returning guest and there is good reason for that, he is really insightfull and despite his humility around his strengths and abilities, he demonstrates and skills and shares ideas in an inspiring and unique way! I feel lucky to be his friend and value our conversations greatly! OK if that hasn't sold you.....then go and have a look at Ryans LinkedIn profile and some of his posts, then click the link and give it a listen! About Michael: I am a lifetime student of the human body and—more so—the phenomena of the brain. I started with physicality by simply noticing the nuance required in performing tricks on a skateboard. I was quickly consumed by the fantastical realm of martial arts, studying in disciplines as far ranging as Tae Kwon Do, Hung Gar, Iaido and Kendo but finally finding a real connection with Muay Thai and now Brazilian Jujitsu. Curiosity about my own potential opened me up to GPP and endurance sports. Competing in triathlon and road cycling consumed me and the budding interest of “how can I get better?” quickly replaced my career as a hairdresser, make-up artist, and photographer; becoming a world of “how can I get others better?” using strength and conditioning, nutrition, and exercise psychology. I’ve competed in hundreds of bike races, dozens of triathlons, International CrossFit style competitions and Olympic style weightlifting events. I’ve helped prepare people for feature films, military selections, and international elite sports. The one thread that binds them is not the muscles, heart or lungs, but the tissue in the skull. The ability to hone this is the feature that I care most about and want to share with my clients. This week I sit down with Silas from English farm to discuss regenerative farming, how it could help save the planet and why grass-fed beef is great for humans. About English Farm: At English Farm, we are staunch believers in the benefits of a diverse pasture only diet for our animals, firmly believing in the age old adage - you are what you eat. We have taken the time to explore what makes the best British Beef, and have come to find that the combination of high welfare - in order to reduce stress, the best breed - English Longhorn, and the best diet - diverse pasture, all combine to create a beautiful product that is full of flavour, environmentally sustainable, and is actually healthier than that of conventional grain-fed animals. Our organic system of rotational and conservation grazing allows the animals to behave as close to as nature intended, the holistic mob stocking approach helps to build soil carbon levels and our PFLA certified 100% grass-fed diet allows the slow grown Beef to achieve a fuller flavour which is nutrient dense and proven to have higher levels of beneficial omega 3 fatty acids. As stewards of the land we ensure that our organic farming system enhances the local biosphere by increasing soil diversity and health, encouraging diversity in our pastures and reinstating hedgerows for wildlife habitat. Public Speaker. Keto Consultant. Brain Tumor Survivor I have followed Josh for a little while now, I had heard briefly about him through my liking and following of the BMX scene, but I really learned about Josh through Keto. Once I started looking to Keto to solve my gut and metabolic issues I looked for other people doing the same and looked for people using it to treat other issues, I had no idea you could even live with brain tumors let alone treat them with diet. Anyway, this was a rad podcast, I was a little nervous as Josh is a cool dude and used to ride with Dave Mira, who is a hero of mine.....anyway I wish I could have chatted to him for longer, hope you enjoy. IB About Josh: After a third brain tumor diagnosis, Josh Perry left the comfort of a professional BMX career to harnesses the power of his incredible story and inspire others to foster new perspectives and take new action in their lives. Now as a health coach, keto advocate, and speaker, he is providing tools for mental strength, health & nutrition, manifestation, and business. Josh illustrates how challenges come in dierent shapes and sizes, yet for every problem there’s always a solution. He emphasizes that happy and successful people use the same mental tools to get them there, regardless of their past or current tribulations. This week I sit down to talk to an old colleague and friend Mike Lee, aka Mike Lee PT. Mike has been coaching for the best part of 10 years, starting as a PT in big box (or "globo" gyms), before transitioning to CrossFit and finally online/remote coaching. This journey has given Mike a great appreciation for the industry, a ton of experience and driven him to learn more and more about coaching human beings. This is why I wanted to sit down with him and chat about coaching, some themes he see's in the industry, good and bad.....along with some coaching and CrossFit nerdy stuff. This week I am Talking Tech, with Basil Kronfli! I have known Basil for a pretty decent while now, crossing paths a number of times at various tech companies and it was always a pleasure to catch up and talk tech. Mainly due to Basil's passion, insight, and understanding of the tech industry. This podcast as I mentioned in the intro is a bit of a self-indulgent podcast, essentially allowing me to talk about another passion of mine, it was great fun and hopefully, we can do another soon. About Basil: I'm Basil
This week I sit down with Wes to tell his story about living and managing his Crohn's disease. Wes is a large, energetic character and a wicked person to be around! This podcast came about after talking to him at the gym and sharing stories and with gut health being a topic that is close to me, I really wanted to get Wes on to discuss his journey and what he is planning to do to spread awareness and support others with Chrone's. Links: https://www.instagram.com/wesleydyke/ What is Crohn's disease? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crohn%27s_disease Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that may affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus.[2] Symptoms often include abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody if inflammation is severe), fever, and weight loss.[1][2] Other complications outside the gastrointestinal tract may include anemia, skin rashes, arthritis, inflammation of the eye, and tiredness.[1] The skin rashes may be due to infections as well as pyoderma gangrenosum or erythema nodosum.[1] Bowel obstruction may occur as a complication of chronic inflammation, and those with the disease are at greater risk of bowel cancer.[1]
This week's guest is talented freelance Photographer Jon Payne. Jon came to my attention after collaborating with functional fitness store Whatever it Takes and taking photos with a number of top-level Crossfit athletes. As a very amateur but keen photographer, I wanted to chat about how Jon got into photography, what inspires him and how he crafts his art. Also as Jon has been to many sanctionals this year gone and the games, what the CrossFit landscape is like through his lens. As I mention in the intro the theme of this one is about taking chances, being positive and trying to work together to create. Hope you enjoy the conversation. Danny is a really top dude and was really gracious with his time when I asked him to speak to me. He's also been experimenting with Keto & Carnivor before they were both cool and has spoken to and learnt from all of the top people in the "Primal" eating space. It was a no brainer to ask him to be on the podcast when it came time for me to share my experiences with the diet, Danny brings his energy, knowlege and passion for health to this episode and it was genuinely a wicked hour that few by! Thanks again Danny! About Danny: I grew up in Miami, Florida and I have always been interested in nutrition and fitness. Ever since I was a young kid, I wanted to be a “strong man”. "I have been out of collegiate Strength & Conditioning for almost a decade, but I have continued to compete in sports such as crossfit, powerlifting, half marathons, and now rowing. In June of 2016 I discovered the ketogenic lifestyle and I never looked back. I found so many benefits within a week of switching, that I knew this would be my new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating myself up with heavy lifting were gone. I regained control over my hunger and found a mental clarity and increase in productivity that I had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, our two boys joined us. Desmond, our eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, our youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Our children are immune to cravings. It has been an amazing thing to see. We thought our kids were “picky” just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds and now they crave real, nourishing food like the recipes you will find on this PDF. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way!" This week we are talking about using fat for fuel and that means the ketogenic diet! I have been experimenting and researching keto for around 6 months now and it has been eye-opening, especially regarding the recommended dietary information provided by experts and health care professionals. It can be pretty confusing if you don't know where to look, so I want to get someone on the podcast who knows there shit and my man Chris Irvin certainly does! From Chris: "My name is Chris Irvin and I am a nutrition researcher, writer, and educator. I hold a Master’s Degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science and am currently the education manager for Perfect Keto. After spending a couple of years doing research and developing content about keto, I decided to start looking more into the keto industry because I wanted to bring more research and education into the industry. Fortunately, Perfect Keto was looking for someone to improve research and education within there company, something they were already doing very well! I was already a big fan of Dr. Anthony Gustin and the quality products he was making at Perfect Keto so it ended up making a great fit." This week I sit down to have a chat with my uncle, which I've wanted to do for a while! Stuart has had some great gigs in media over the years, that has really fascinated me, yet I have never really been able to talk to him about them. Instead, I would hear about these endeavors third hand through my parents. To give you an idea, Stuart worked on a Monty Python movie and a Queen gig in his first few years and then moved to Paris when I was 11 - ish, which threw him into a football World Cup and the tragic death of a princess. What became apparent to me as I talked to my uncle during this chat was, 1, if you want something badly enough just go after it and 2, taking opportunities when they are presented to you often leads to more opportunities! Podcast Number 10! So who are Cousin? And What's a Brand Practice? Well in this week's 2nd podcast and on the launch of "Cousin", "The Brand Practice" we find out! As I sit down with Christianne and Lynsay to talk about their new company that launches today! For those that aren't aware, Christianne is my Girlfriend and I am super proud of both of these ladies, it has been inspiring and motivating watching both of them build Cousin and as a result, I find it hard not to start pitching the business on their behalf as I believe in them and their work so, so much. Hopefully, this podcast will give you a glimpse into what I have seen develop in front of me over the last 6 months, a budding friendship (kindred spirits really), a sense of purpose, adventure, a business built to problem solve, with creativity at its core and 2 kick-ass ladies that have a vision for a better way of branding! Alexis Rufus and I met training at CrossFit Perpetua around 5 years ago, we both ended up catching the bug and both went into coaching at the same gym and while we had similar journey's at the beginning, we certainly didn't when it came to the sport of fitness. Lex, would go on to compete in a lot of European events, re-igniting the competitor spirit she had from her World Champion Muay Thai fighting career, which culminated in a 2018 trip to Regionals and this year heading to the big show, the 2019 CrossFit games! As I mention in the podcast it's been incredible to watch her journey and great to see her achieve this goal, It was also great to sit down, have a chat and catch up! This week's podcast is with @ryan Conlan and we get into the topic of authentic self and how to use that to alter your perspective and the journey you're on. We also discuss how Authentic has almost become a buzz word and instead, replace it with genuine, hence the title of this week's show. This is a rewarding podcast for me, as it was a chance for me to re-connect with a dude I have a lot of time for and who's impacted my journey in the world of fitness as we explain in the podcast. Even recording this show evolved my thinking and sparked new ideas for me due to Ryan's ideas and attitude, he's a top lad and I am sure you will dig this one! On a slight side note, but related to self-awareness, listening back to these makes you very aware of your language and conversation style.....it's not perfect I know, I am learning each one of these I do to ask more questions and to be more sparing with language to get to the same result. I really do thank those who are on this journey with me and I am excited to see where this goes. (I also apologise for the odd sound glitch via Skype!) Modern Masculinity, what is it? It kind of feels like it's a bit of a tricky subject these days and that even the term "masculinity", seems to mean very different things to different people. We have definitely seen some great strides forward in the equality debate in many forms of late, though I am very aware that there is still a long way to go and this is for sure not us wading in on that topic! Instead.... in this week's podcast, @davidbirtwistle and I wanted to talk about what being a modern man is about and what the term means to us. Why is this important? Well, Dave recently mentioned the following to me: • Suicide is still the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45. • Men make up 3/4 of the suicide rate in the UK. Which is crazy but in many ways unsurprising, as a guy it has taken me a long time to feel comfortable about being vulnerable, talking about how I feel, what scares me and even asking for help. So in this podcast, we do just that! By no means are we claiming to be able to help solve the problem or be experts in male counseling, we are just 2 dudes, that have both struggled at times with being a bloke in the modern world. So rather than shy away from the topic, we wanted to have a chat and see if others felt the same, start the conversation amongst our peers and try and share honestly about how we're trying to be modern men. I really hope you find this useful and if I am being honest just talking to Dave about this made me feel better and more confident in my own hang-ups, we mention this in the podcast but I would like to stress it again: If you're struggling with anything, talk. If a fella comes to you with something, listen. • Side note, very aware I need to work on my intros haha......leave that one with me! Tommy Marquez was the on-camera face of CrossFit for nearly six years and has recently become a free-lance writer, podcaster and analyst for the sport of functional fitness, since the changes to the CF Games media team. Tommy is an OG of CrossFit, starting with the training system over 10 years at "The Ranch" & owning his own affiliate along the way. On this episode, we talk about the past, present, and future of CrossFit as a sport and we also get to nerd out on a shared passion for "Talking Elite Fitness", movies and comic books. This podcast was super fun for me as Tommy is just a gent and someone I share a lot of mutual interests with, so again thank you, my man, was an absolute pleasure! This week on the Inquisitive Beast podcast I wanted to tackle the subject of Function vs Aesthetics, as it's being discussed a lot at the moment and was sparked by an Insta-story put out by this Episodes guest Andrew Tracey. The 1st part of the podcast we really talk about Andrew's journey it fitness, it's unconventional in some ways but very cool and has certainly given him a fresh perspective on training. The 2nd half we delve into fitness and our views on, function, aesthetics and how this impacts culture. Was an absolute pleasure to sit down for a mighty 3 hours with Andrew on a call and dive into this subject, mainly as I not only because Andrew is an absolute gent, but we share a lot of similar views and I respect what he's done, and is doing in the world of fitness. I think that the later point definitely comes across in the show, honestly, it was hard not to just agree with a lot of what AT shared and at times take points and run with them. Hopefully, this "enthusiasm" of mine, makes for an interesting conversation and causes more healthy questions and debate. He is also a rad dude that works out anywhere in, vans and vests, like comics and burgers.......I mean, how were we not going to get on! Again thanks for everyone who has, listened, liked & shared! Also, thank you to everyone for their positive support of this new endeavor, means a lot. I'm motivated by results and they only come through hard work, I think once you figure out the correlation it makes it easier to stay motivated. Find a method you *enjoy* too, it might not be the 'best' way to get to your goals, but at the end of the day the only plan that will work is the one you can stick to."
Awesome to sit down with Adam Goff, Aka my mate Goffy. Adam is someone as who I have always looked up to, never resting on his laurels, he has built a succesful 10 year old property buisness. He is also a mentor, entrepreneur & fitness enthusiast, with a passion for life. Definately learnt a few things during this one and had a great time chatting to a top bloke. For my 1st ever solo podcast I sit down with my man David Birtwistle, Dave & I live & train together & often talk about life, health & fitness. So it seemed only right that DB would be the 1st person I would call on to sit in the hot seat and have a chat, especially as he was the dude that told me to "just start", in regards to podcasting. In this episode, I wanted to chat to Dave about his role in the fitness world and how he feals it's changed, pros & cons of the space & where the industry is going. (This could have gone on for another hour and I feel there is more to discuss here, so hopefully Dave will sit down for a follow up!) As it's my 1st podcast, it's a little rough round the edges in regards to sound and flow but as Dave said, I have to start somewhere, so I hope you find this chat valuable.
