Shifting away from unhealthy norms is very difficult, especially when so much of society pushes convenience over well-being. The idea of reclaiming health often starts with small, everyday changes—like making better food choices or prioritizing time together as a family. Families can feel more in control when they move away from what's marketed as "easy" and instead focus on what truly benefits them. It's not about perfection but about carving out healthier routines that feel right for each family. Hilary Boynton is the author of the "Heal Your Gut Cookbook" and the founder of the School of Lunch Training Academy, and Stephanie Gruenke is a dietitian and the co-host of the "Doctor Mom" podcast. Today, Hillary and Stephanie gets into the topic of nutrient-dense school lunches and empowering families to adopt healthier eating habits. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “Busyness is kryptonite for intuition, and intuition is the superpower that we're all born with.” – Hilary Boynton “We really have to take ownership of what we're doing in our homes and with our families, rather than waiting for someone to come and save us. It starts with us, and I think that's one of the most important principles.” – Stephanie Gruenke “Never forget, simplicity is gourmet. It doesn't have to be Food Network worthy or complicated.” – Hilary Boynton “Protecting your family values, being around people and communities that uphold those values, and teaching your kids how to navigate relationships or situations where values might not be upheld, is so important.” – Stephanie Gruenke “Talking about how culture proceeds is crucial because the way it evolves is the defining thing. As I've always said, you make normal what you make normal.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Establish a culture of joyful, nutrient-dense eating in your home or school, as "culture precedes success." Involve your kids in the kitchen and meal planning to foster a positive relationship with food. Identify and address the root causes of picky eating, such as gut health and sensory issues, with the help of a functional health professional. Engage parents with empathy and open-ended questions to encourage them to take ownership of their family's health. Take advantage of local resources, like farmers and chefs, to build a sustainable, community-driven approach to nourishing your children. Conclusion: Creating a culture of joyful and mindful nourishment within families and schools is important for long-term well-being. Instead of depending on external solutions or quick fixes, the focus should be on empowering parents and educators to take responsibility for their own health and the health of their communities. By encouraging this sense of ownership, we can create a sustainable, community-driven approach to feeding future generations. This shift supports healthier, more connected communities and ensures a lasting impact on the next generation's well-being.

You may want to pay attention to what goes into your body, including where the foods and beverages you consume are grown and raised.  This is one of the things that Ecologist Mark J. Easter discussed on the show and in his newly published book, "The Blue Plate: A Food Lover's Guide to Climate Chaos."  The impact that microbes have, whether negative or positive, on Earth's environment can change based on actions we take.  In his book, he combines his years of research and experience in his field and focuses his attention on what fuels Earth's carbon emissions crisis, and how we can help reverse the cycle through our consumption of food.  He breaks down each chapter like a plate of food while attending a dinner party, combining his scientific knowledge with personal history and stories.  If nothing else, it may change your mind and view on where you buy, eat, and discard your meals and perhaps inspire you after reading Mark's book, "The Blue Plate."(https://www.patagonia.com/product/the-blue-plate-a-food-lovers-guide-to-climate-chaos/)There is clearly a significant theme for this week's show, and what better way is there to highlight regenerative and sustainable farms than focus on an author who is aiming to heal the Earth through what we grow and eat, as well as spotlighting a group that are looking for the most nutrient-dense, organic  agricultural and farms. So, stay tuned to hear from Matt Kirchner, one of the Co-Owners for Local Bound Collective (LBC).  LBC consists of like-minded individuals who wanted to organize a way for organic and sustainably-focused farmers to offer their produce, meats, and products to be available for restaurants, grocery stores, and markets in one place! Matt has worked on farms and inside local grocer chains, and saw a need to advocate for organic farmers who offer bountiful produce, meats, and cheeses so they can help connect restaurants & stores to their local farms.  Their initiative also helps to reduce food waste: It aids in providing farm-fresh products for consumers to purchase at local stores, with an eye on the details of the business' needs. IG:    https://www.instagram.com/localbound.pa/Web: https://philly-hub.localline.ca/shop  I also popped on to highlight some of Food Farms And Chefs Radio Show guests who focus on maintaining and supporting the farm-to-table, regenerative, organic, and sustainable agriculture & livestock practices.  Later, I also dropped some information on some of the places that I've recently found during my driving adventures, which includes restaurants and fast-casual eateries & bakeries in NY, NJ, and DE.  So listen to the last short segment in case you want to visit some of the spots that I've been to!

If you're serious about figuring out what type of diet is best for you – your answer is nutrient dense foods. Let me explain…Food fear is rampant right now, with social media demonizing different common foods/ingredients as well as promoting “healthy” diets that lack necessary nutrient dense foods.Nutrients are the raw materials that the human body needs to survive and thrive. If you are not consuming nutrient dense foods, you may have nutrient insufficiencies, which puts a strain on various systems in the body.So when you believe in this idea that some foods are “good” and others are “bad”, it can create a restrictive way of eating, which can then lead to insufficiencies or deficiencies later on. All this can become incredibly confusing, especially when you're being inundated daily with influencer messages telling you to follow this diet or that. You may get to a point where you are afraid to eat! That's why today's conversation is SO important. I'm joined by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne to discuss how to approach optimal nutrition without dangerous elimination diets or dogma around eating.Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD is the founder of Nutrivore.com. She creates educational resources to help people improve their day-to-day diet and lifestyle choices, empowered and informed by the most current evidence-based scientific research. The Nutrivore approach is positive and inclusive dietary guidance, based on science and devoid of dogma, using nutrient dense foods as a foundational principle encompassed by the simple phrase: Nourishment, not judgment. Her new book, also called Nutrivore, is now available everywhere you can purchase books. We'll talk about some of the eye-opening points I discovered in the book, and why I found it such a valuable read to help you pick nutrient dense foods. In This Episode:Why nutrient deficiencies are such a HUGE problem (and how they happen)Why changing your mind is a good thing (even if you feel embarrassed)How morality applied to diet and foods is disastrousWhy you need protein (and what amino acids are used for in your body)The Nutrivore approach to optimal nutrition and nutrient dense foodsMost nutrient-rich foods to include in your dietQuotes“Deficiency technically refers to such low regular dietary intake of a nutrient that you develop a disease of malnutrition. There's scurvy, rickets, pellagra, beriber, night blindness, iron deficiency anemia. So we have these really well-characterized diseases caused by a single nutrient being too low.”“The more black-and-white we think about foods, the more it increases the risk for disordered eating, for weight regain cycles, so yo-yo dieting, the more it increases the stress response. And it's actually driving, I think, what is currently a big problem in society right now, which is that we think that a diet is about what we cut out. We think a diet is about bad foods that we have to eliminate. We're bad if we eat that bad food, we're good if we eat these good foods.”LinksFind Dr. Ballantyne online | Instagram | Facebook | Tiktok | YouTubeGET THE BOOK NOW – Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat5 Free Guides to NutrivoreHealthy Skin Show ep. 305: Elimination Diets, Food Fear + He

Hello Friend Are you constantly searching recipes for the fad diets that keep you on the roller coaster of diet trends for years that mess with your metabolism?  I don't even know what the newest thing is out there right now since we just switched to nutrient dense food years ago and cooking from scratch. From that time, I started learning about what is in the food we eat and how to eat more nutrient rich foods so I don't ever have to diet.  We want our kids to know how important it is to look at what is in the food, the dyes and also if it has more than a couple ingredients, it probably is something I would skip.  Now, as I have simplified and created a whole system around this, we still will get things on occasion that don't align with this and that is okay. It isnt all or nothing such as diets. Just so the majority of the time, you are opting for healthy choices.  Live your best life by treating your body well.  You only have 1 body, so feed it good food. When you have an active everyday life, you are naturally able to get exercise into your schedule-habit stack on each thing you do throughout the day! Our favorite nutrient dense foods right now are meats such as venison, pork, beef and chicken.  Did you know that nutrient dense means less food with the most amount of nutrients.  You don't have to eat large amounts of nutrient dense foods because they are just packed with goodness.  We eat seasonally so right now we are eating potatoes and trying to use up all our preserved produce before the new season arrives.  Consumption of nutrient dense foods rich in protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals are one of the keys to wellness! Remember, With God~all things are possible! ~Monica Website and Waitlist: Claimingsimplicity.com Simple Homesteading for Christians-> https://www.facebook.com/groups/claimingsimplicity/ Email -> monica@claimingsimplicity.com Instagram -> https://www.instagram.com/claimingsimplicity/ Pinterest ->  https://www.pinterest.com/claimingsimplicity/

Your body is the vehicle for all your drive, so we seek to strengthen it for you in this episode. We live in a culture where many people don't eat many vegetables, and if they do, they gravitate towards the least beneficial. Food is your best medicine, so here is your guide to getting the most out of your veggies. And the goal? Make veggies half or more of every meal. Not the side. Meat and grains and other are your side. But to vegetables, not all are created equal. In a recent episode, Dr James quipped about his kids going for the most sugar-full veggies like carrots and snap peas and it sparked a listener to ask which veggies were in fact, “better”. We intended to discuss the “better” foods in five categories but found just getting through veggies was a complete episode. To give you some Cliff's Notes, his “top tier” picks for the most nutrient dense veggies were broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, spinach, cabbage (especially purple) and kale. Tier two? Peas, corn, carrots and okra. Why? You'll serve yourself well to understand, so in this episode Dr Randy James and I break it down. Quick call out to my new friend, Kathy. She's been a listener for years, loves these health focused shows I do with Dr James, and this week surprised me by showing up at his practice, True Life Medicine, here in Colorado. Hello! There are so many health benefits to eating nutrient dense foods and our family has really prioritized health the last few years as we have become aware of what is in store bought food more and more.  If there are more than a couple ingredients in anything you plan to buy-stay away from it and find an option to make it yourself.  I just heard a dentist say on a podcast that more kids are having tooth decay from goldfish crackers than candy!  I remember when I thought they were a good option to candy, so that was quite shocking to me!  Look at your ingredients! Here are just a few benefits:  Nutrient-dense foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and other essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly. These nutrients play crucial roles in various bodily processes, including metabolism, immunity, and cell repair. Consuming a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods can help support overall health and well-being. Nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are important for maintaining healthy bones, muscles, and organs. Nutrient-dense foods tend to be lower in calories compared to processed and high-calorie foods. This means you can eat larger portions of nutrient-dense foods without consuming excess calories, which can help with weight management and maintenance. A diet high in nutrient-dense foods has been associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. The antioxidants and phytochemicals found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains have protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation, which are underlying factors in many chronic conditions. Nutrient-dense foods rich in complex carbohydrates, fiber, and protein, provide sustained energy throughout the day. Unlike refined carbohydrates and sugary snacks, which can cause energy spikes and crashes, nutrient-dense foods help stabilize blood sugar levels and keep you feeling satisfied for longer periods. Many nutrient-dense foods are high in dietary fiber, which is important for digestive health. Fiber helps promote regular bowel movements, prevent constipation, and support a healthy gut microbiome by feeding beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.   Here are some simple habits to nourish your body with nutrient dense foods. Make sure you start your day out with something packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber like leafy greens-they are great to add to smoothies or eggs in the morning.  You can add berries which are rich in antioxidants and fiber, nut milk or flax seeds provide healthy fats, protein and essential nutrients, and that is an easy way to stay filled up so you don't feel like you have to snack often and raise your blood sugar. Preparing nutrient dense foods so they are easy to grab is another simple habit to get into.  We like to make greek yogurt with raw milk which is high in protein, calcium and probiotics, we make our own granola with rolled oats because they are rich in fiber and antioxidants and can help support heart health and provide sustained energy.  We always have a bowl or 2 of boiled eggs because they are simple to grab and go and are high in protein, vitamins and minerals like b12 and selenium.  Deviled eggs are another great source and our family loves them.   Eat at home as much as possible.  A few years ago, we cut out all oils besides coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil and when you get anything from a restaurant or deli, most likely they are not using high quality oils which makes such a big difference.  Simple nutrient dense foods such as fish or salmon which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, protein and vitamin D is a great meal and supports heart health and your brain. Add some greens and sweet potatoes that are packed with vitamins a and c, fiber and antioxidants.  Meals can be so easy if you don't overthink it. When you are shopping, try to shop on the outside walls, most of the inner isles are not filled with nutrient dense food.   Source as much food from local farmers as possible.  You might pay a little more, but the quality of what you eat matters. Some other foods that are easy to add into your diet are avocados which are a great source of healthy fats, fiber, potassium, and vitamin E and C. Legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas are excellent sources of protein, fiber and various vitamins and minerals.  Cottage cheese is high in protein and calcium and makes a filling snack option.  Bell peppers are high in vitamin C and are great to add to many dishes such as eggs bakes, fajitas and such.  Cauliflower is great to sneak into any dish as well, i add riced cauliflower to smoothies, eggs, cheesy potatoes, and most dishes you don't even know it is in there, but it is great for digestive health. Some simple ways to prepare nutrient dense foods would be roasting, steaming, grilling, sauteing, raw, blending, and salads. These simple cooking methods can help you prepare nutrient dense foods in a delicious and enjoyable way.  Experiment with different ingredients and flavors to find combinations you love! Overall, incorporating a variety of nutrient-dense foods into your diet can contribute to better health outcomes, improved energy levels, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. So Aim to fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and other nutrient-rich foods for optimal health and well-being. Hello!!    I just got my vegetable seeds for my garden ordered!  It sure seems like Spring here and so maybe I will be able to plant my seeds before the end of May this year!  We have so much work to do on this new garden designed and trying to figure out where everything will go.  We have plenty of land for several garden spaces, but we have to have good fencing as we have too many deer and animals that enjoy our vegetables and fruit just as much as we do.   I have never been one to buy prepared casseroles at the store that you just put in the oven because when I look at the cost of them compared to the ingredients to make that item, it didn't ever make sense to me since I am frugal and I don't like to spend extra money if it doesn't make sense to me plus, I can't imagine it would be as good as made fresh at home.  I will however, spend a little more on certain organic items just knowing that I don't want pesticides on our food, but because it is more expensive, I can't buy everything organic and that is why I choose to grow as much as I can at home and in our garden.  If you have not ever grown your own food, since I just ordered seeds, these prices are fresh in my mind.  I can get many seed packets with 25-50 seeds in them for less than $7.  Do you know how much produce just one of those seeds can produce?  That just seems so crazy to me.  I still have alot to learn about growing seeds, but to me, even if half of those seeds fail…….I am still hundreds of dollars ahead!  I mean I just paid over $2 for just 1 pepper from the store, but 1 seed can produce multiple peppers.  You are smart….do the math.  You don't need anything fancy to get seeds started, so I really encourage you to give it a shot! Cooking with whole foods and nutrient dense food from scratch is not difficult.  Once you realize how many meals you can make with just a few ingredients, you will be more likely to cook simple meals at home.  My mostly used staples are potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers, broth, flour, sourdough, eggs and then whatever meat we have from the freezer.  I love helping people create simple meals from the items they already have at home to save money.  I am going to open up a few more client coaching calls to help you simplify your meals, help you save money on food and learn to cook from scratch in a short amount of time, so if you want to do a 15 minute discovery call to see if this is a good fit for you, I will leave a link to the schedule! Here are a few examples. Beef stew Chicken Soup  You can make a huge pot for under $10 that a whole family of 4 could eat for a whole week if you wanted to. We raise our chickens, grow the onion and carrots, make broth from bones and vegetable scraps and use flour and eggs for noodles and it is really simple to make.  We don't need alot of extra snacks around because we always have food like these ready in the fridge to eat. The more nutrient dense your food is, the less your family is going to need extra expensive sugary snacks from the store because they are satisfied after eating nutritious food.  Keep cooking from scratch and nutrient dense food simple so you don't get overwhelmed!
