In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I interviewed Marcus Filly, who has been a leader in the fitness industry for 10+ years. Marcus talked about his journey from sport to med school to become a 6-time CrossFit Games athlete. We chatted about the essential training elements to optimize healthspan and how to prioritize and balance the key habits with a demanding life schedule. Marcus and I also talked about the logistics of programming for sustainability and longevity to keep in peak functional shape for as long as possible. Marcus is the CEO and Founder of Revival Strength, as well as the creator of the Functional Bodybuilding training method. He is a six-time CrossFit Games competitor (2016 12th fittest) and has 20 years of expertise coaching and structuring individual and group training programs for clients all around the world. The desire to assist people to live healthier lifestyles inspired Marcus to leave part way through medical school and pursue a career in coaching. After reaching the pinnacle of his competitive career and experiencing burnout and injury, he created the Functional Bodybuilding Method, which combines bodybuilding techniques with functional movements focusing on longevity, strength, and aesthetics to help people look good and move well for as long as possible. Currently, he leads a team of coaches and creates online Functional Bodybuilding training, nutrition, and education programs. He also co-hosts the “Look Good Move Well Podcast”. In today's episode we sit down and talk with Marcus Filly. Owner and operator of Revival Strength and Functional Bodybuilding.Marcus was a 6x CrossFit Games athlete with his best finish in 2016 finishing in 12th place in the world! Since then Marcus has put the majority of his focus in building his coaching business and raising a family. In this podcast we get to see a side of Marcus most of you might not see very often. On social media you may only get to see his workouts and his epically crafted meals on his instagram and YouTube page but today we dive a little bit into his back story. We talk about his life from high school, college and his first couple years in medical school and how that journey shaped his decision to choose health and fitness as his method for helping people instead of spending another 6 years in school before ever getting to practice anything he's learned. We talk about his coaching approach when it comes to Functional Bodybuilding and his hope to help as many people as possible "stay in the game" longer than they ever expected. We talk about common misunderstandings people have when looking at Marcus through the social media sense. How the most influential people in his life right now are all women. And finally how his focus isn't on legacy but rather on building a successful business that in 10-15 years time will create the legacy for him through their programs and results.I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Marcus and wish we could've gone for another 45 mins! I hope you guys enjoy as well!Follow Marcus @marcusfillyFollow Functional Bodybuilding @functional.bodybuildingFollow me @chrispage_coach

In this episode of Strength Chat, I got the opportunity to speak with the founder of Revival Strength, Marcus Filly. From speaking with Marcus, it was clear that he is passionate about helping people achieve their health and fitness goals and doing so in a way that they feel and look better in a sustainable way. Too often you can see people opting for the easier or quicker option, but never actually getting closer to achieving their goals. Therefore, in this episode we chatted about what functional training is, and can that differ person to person, as well as getting outside of your comfort zone and the fear of failure. You can find Bri on Instagram at @briannalamb or on Revival Strength's website.

Meet Coach Bri from Revival Strength in California. Badass athlete turned CF Games Bound Athlete that found herself burned out and depleted. She's now a thriving career coach who empowers her clients to use fitness as a tool to tackle a better life.
Marcus Filly is a 6x CrossFit Games competitor, a lifelong athlete, and a professional fitness coach. Marcus is the creator of Functional Bodybuilding and the owner of Revival Strength, both of which help athletes and individuals look better, feel stronger, and live healthier lives. We discuss Marcus' training philosophy, dealing with failure, his unique approach to fitness, and more.
This week's guest, Marcus Filly, and I share a very common storyline from our youth. Marcus grew up with, as he puts it, a pressure to meet other people's expectations of him — expectations often rooted in accomplishments. As I detail in my recently released book, The Involved Man, I struggled with the same issues as well. In his early 20s, Marcus experienced an "awakening" that shifted the trajectory of his life. He'd been an athlete and a gym-goer for many years before that, but things really took off for him at about that time once he got closer to who he really was. Now, as a husband to his wife, Megan; a father to his two daughters, the owner of Revival Strength (https://revival-strength.com/), and the creator of his functional bodybuilding programming, Marcus is providing so much value to the fitness community as he tries to get others to enjoy training and exercise as he helps others move better. This truly was one of my favorite episodes to record. Was it because of the fantastic content? Yes. Of course the content was wonderful and for many, the concepts we covered will challenge your current training approach and lead to significant and results boosting action. But it was more than the content... it was the guest. On today's episode of the Life By Design Podcast I had the opportunity to speak with 6x CrossFit Games athlete (including finishing as the 12th fittest man in the world in 2016) Marcus Filly. Marcus is a husband, father of 2 daughters and the CEO and Founder of Revival Strength and Functional Bodybuilding, and creator of Awaken Training Series. What I loved about this episode was the value systems and principles that make up this functional bodybuilding model. The amount of crossover with Life By Design lead to a detailed dive into what works in the functional fitness real world and what doesn't. What We Covered The journey that lead Marcus from a high school athlete to Division 1 athletics to the CrossFit Games and eventually leaving CrossFit altogether to create a more logical approach to functional fitness. The pitfalls of Traditional CrossFit Marcus witnessed while coaching in his own facility...including the secret to behind the "I look too bulky" statement heard from many women. The 3 fundamentals of Functional Bodybuilding that highlight a massive shift from most program design within the functional fitness world. How to move athletes from trying to hit PR's and burning out to consistently, frequent, recoverable training that yields results over time.

Marcus Filly is the owner of Revival Strength and creator of Functional Bodybuilding. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he played multiple sports as a child including soccer, baseball, and golf, which eventually led to a collegiate career in soccer at the University of California, Berkeley. There he earned his degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Nutrition and Physiology. After Berkeley, he completed a year of graduate work at the Ohio State University School of Medicine. His interest in both athletics and human health and performance eventually led him to CrossFit in 2007. He has gone on to compete at the CrossFit Games 6 times, three times as an individual (2016 12th fittest) and three times as a team member (2012 6th fittest team). Marcus is also the captain and member of the Phoenix Rise in the NPGL. For two years he has been voted to the all GRID league team, in 2016 earning 1st team honors, and in 2015 earning the award for leadership excellence. Marcus has been a health and fitness coach for 8 years since leaving Medical School in 2009. He was formerly a CrossFit facility owner for 5 years, has completed all 5 of the OPEX CCP courses, and has coached clients remotely from all over the world. He has coached athletes at the CrossFit Games as well as several Regionals athletes. He lives with his wife Megan, and daughter. He lists his parents, Barbara and Roy, as his role models and drive to succeed in life.

We outline the progression of movements and how different training variables are adjusted during the program, as well as emphasize the importance of tempo and time under tension. Our conversation is highlighted by the topic of commitment to change and being loyal to a process to reap its long lasting benefits.

Shanna Guzman is a coach here at Revival Strength. She's someone I've had the chance to learn a lot from over the last several months. Especially when it comes to anything endurance related. Shanna comes from a swimming background, where she won a world championship in the 200m Backstroke in 2006 and multiple national titles from 2006-2012. She's currently being coached by Mike Lee of OPEX and is focused on developing herself to compete in the 40+ division of the CrossFit Games this year. The most fascinating part for me is talking about the honesty it takes to live the lifestyle of a competitor while also pursuing a coaching career. Marcus Filly has been competing in CrossFit since the beginning. A 6x Games athlete, he remembers the days when working out once a day was enough to get you there, and this week we talk to him about the evolution of CrossFit as the gap between Games athletes and “Average Joes” has continued to expand. Marcus tells us what his prescription for an “average” athlete seeking lifelong fitness would be (hint: you need to get out of the gym every once in a while), and we talk about why (and how) he’s establishing a gym culture where it’s not just all about group training. On this episode of Uncharted Performance we are joined by a very successful and immensely intelligent athlete and coach, 6 times CrossFit games competitor, founder of Revival Strength and most importantly new dad, Marcus Filly. What Marcus has developed is to what to outsiders might see as a seamless blend of how many of us first got into fitness, chasing that pump, and what many of us have transitioned to and grown to love, functional fitness. Before we get to Functional Bodybuilding and a walkthrough the very popular Awaken Training Series, we discuss how he got to now starting with his first ever training session and how that left him, his interest and passion in the physical and health sciences, the role medical school played in defining his mission, and the five major impact points in his training life, all along connecting all the dots. What is Functional Bodybuilding then exactly? Great question, but you will just have to listen to the episode to find out specifically.
