From Brooklyn gangs to competing in North Korea, table tennis saved Wally Geen's life and turned him into a messenger of peace.Nobody in the West really cares about table tennis, which is why Wally Green isn't a household name.I mention the West because, as we all know, Asians not only love the sport but are masters of it. The Chinese, for example, are on another level entirely. Have you seen them play? It's incredible.Anyway, back to Wally. His story is not about winning competitions, but about winning at life.To be clear, Wally represented the United States in over 35 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) pro tours around the world, but he has never won a major competition. However, what makes his journey inspirational is how he overcame an abusive father, gangs, and hiding guns, to direct his anger towards competitive sports and create hilarious memories around the world. After all, how often do Black people play table tennis in North Korea?
On today's episode, we welcome Michael G. Kehoe, a filmmaker who turned a whisper of an idea into the resounding voice of a feature film. From Brooklyn to Hollywood, from an eight-year-old boy watching his mother direct community theater to a director commanding his own set, Michael's journey is one of persistence, heartbreak, and sheer creative will.In this profound conversation, Michael G. Kehoe shares the winding road of his career, one marked by passion and loss. A pact among friends, the bright lights of New York, and the uncertainty of Los Angeles formed the backdrop to his early years. But it was a personal tragedy—the untimely passing of two close friends—that set the stage for his first short film, Second Dance. With no roadmap but a fierce determination, he crafted a story that not only resonated but landed him in the heart of Sundance, proving that even the smallest project can open the biggest doors. The journey didn't stop there. Years later, inspired by his twin boys' innocent bedtime fears, he penned a horror story that would eventually become The Hatred. Rather than waiting for a green light from the industry, he carved his own path. He created Hush, a short film that distilled the very essence of fear—the anticipation of the unknown. The reaction was immediate. Audiences jumped, festivals awarded, and industry heavyweights, including the producers behind Halloween, took notice. The lesson? The industry rewards those who show, not just tell. But success in Hollywood is rarely a straight road. Shooting The Hatred on a tight budget and an even tighter schedule meant adapting, improvising, and making every shot count. “Poverty breeds creativity,” Michael says, a testament to the resilience needed in independent filmmaking. Working with a largely female cast, he crafted a horror film that stood apart from the blood-soaked clichés, focusing instead on atmosphere, character, and tension. The result? A film that paid homage to the horror classics of the past while carving its own identity in the present.Of course, filmmaking is a collaborative art. Michael speaks of the relationships that make the journey worthwhile—the actors who return to work with him time and again, the cinematographers who bring his visions to life, and the producers who take a chance on passion over pedigree. “Surround yourself with people smarter than you,” he advises. A lesson as true for life as it is for film.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Zev's had one of the most interesting career arcs of any bartender I know, but when we finally sat down to tape an episode, it turned out to have even more twists and turns than I thought! From Brooklyn to Melbourne to Montreal and back to NY, and from bartending for Heston Blumenthal Down Under to manning the shakers in the Meyerverse* that is Union Square Hospitality Group at it's Michelin-starred The Modern, to a COVID-era swerve into working as one of less than half a dozen spirits specialists worldwide at Sotheby's (who had just auctioned off a $44m T-rex skeleton the day before we met up) where he values whisky and other liquor that sells for five-figure sums, Zev has tales to tell and kindly supplied vintage whiskey to fuel the storytelling as well. (I still think he's actually a spy, tho). Many thanks to Sotheby's New York for hosting us, and the whiskey book Zev recommends in this episode is "Collecting Scotch Whisky" by Emmanuel Dron. *Danny Meyer, that is. #IYKYKZev on IG: https://www.instagram.com/raisezbar/ Get in touch with Duff!Podcast business enquiries: consulting@liquidsolutions.org (PR friends: we're only interested in having your client on if they can talk about OTHER things than their prepared speaking points or their new thing, whatever that is, for a few hours. VYS0037 | Elvis with a Flaming Sword - Vayse to Face with AP Strange - Show Notes In this episode Vayse welcomes AP Strange, a writer, researcher and blogger with a near encyclopaedic knowledge of all things weird and a wicked sense of humour to go with it. Hine and Buckley shake down AP's voluminous brain on a wide range of bizarre topics and greedily feast on the nuggets of information that fall out, including the answers to such questions as: What were the entities that revealed the future to AP as a child and why did he liken them to Mikey Mouse's gloves? Did AP take a ghost for a spin in his Mustang and what was revealed when he got a tarot reading from this suspected phantom? Why is a sense of humour essential to an open mind and what happens if you don't embrace that? How can we learn to receive messages from the cosmos and allow a little more Strange into our lives? How and why do people so often ignore their own experiences of High Strangeness and should more of us be open to accepting the King of Rock 'n' Roll's Flaming Sword...? From Brooklyn to Baghdad, former NYPD Intel Sergeant Christopher Strom talks with B.C. about his time traveling overseas to apply his skills learned during his two decades with NYPD working street crimes and intelligence. Strom was part of Phoenix Group, a collective of members from the military and cops disrupting IED networks and locating bomb makers. Strom's book, "Brooklyn to Baghdad," is an incredible read which documents the actions of the team and his background with NYPD.
My guest today worked for Club Med from 1987 to 1989. Her first season was in Club Med Martinique in 1987 as an Assistant Choreographer. She worked in Copper Mountain with my first CDV, Jean-Pierre Grand, and Arziv and Roi Soleil in Switzerland. For the last 21 years, she has owned a dance studio called “Real Dance” and we talked about that as well. We have never met, but she came highly recommended by a former CDV of mine and a former guest on this podcast. It turns out, she went to Turks and Caicos as a G.M. in 1985 where she met two of my favorite people, Angie Boucher and Hansel Moss. Angie was having her first season as a Hostess and she suggested that my guest try it! After her first season, she became a Chief of Animation and Choreographer in all her subsequent seasons. Fox News is the leading propaganda outlet for the GOP, so it shoulders much of the blame for Republican absurdity that will undoubtedly continue to unfold. The more the Republicans cater to fringe elements in exchange for a loyal voting bloc, and the more those extreme views are amplified by Fox News across the nation to an undereducated public, the worse things will get. Florida man and Republican Senator Jason Brodeur hopes to make it law that any blogger writing about the governor must register with the state. Fox News, Newsmax and even Republicans like Newt Gingrich think this is bad politics and have called it insane, unconstitutional, un-Republican, and un-Florida. Modern Renaissance man Barney Bishop encourages entitled parents, arguably fairly odd parents afraid of 500 year old art, of Tallahassee, Florida to support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in his campaign to cripple the state's education system. The latest is that a Florida school fired a principal after she showed 12 year old students Michelangelo's Statue of David as part of a mandated Renaissance art lesson. This is part of the GOP's latest attempt to contrast with the so-called elites – side note, DeSantis went to Harvard University and Yale University. From Brooklyn, New York to Salt Lake City, Utah, books are being banned in your local library. Primarily, books focusing on LGBT and people of color are being targeted for censorship, and it's being done by organized groups with a GOP agenda. Fox News Disagrees with Florida GOP (01:04), Entitled Parents Censor School (06:42), Banning Books in Your School Library (25:52)

My guest for Season 4, Episode 4 is the remarkable Jimmy Galvin; seasoned sports administrator, globally acclaimed house DJ, music label founder and event/festival producer, and now, cofounder and CEO of Raydel Aqua Rugby, Australia's first floating rugby tournament. Described as the ‘Hong Kong Sevens meets the Monaco Grand Prix', Aqua Rugby is making an almighty splash in Australia's live entertainment scene at Manly Cove in November ‘22, the festival's second season after its launch event earlier this year. The team have secured the backing of naming rights sponsor, Raydel, along with Destination NSW, Buildcorp, Budgy Smuggler, Lion White Claw, and 4 Pines Brewing Company, to name a few. From Brooklyn, NY to the beaches of Bali, from Burning Man to the boardroom, it's safe to say Jimmy Galvin is a busy guy. But he takes it all in his stride; his energy and passion for life, for the business, his team, and of course rugby, is pure delight. It's inspiring, and it's infectious! Characteristically, Jimmy has forged his own unique path in life and business, and encourages others to do the same. “You will carve your own leadership journey and your own leadership style.” Being in business is tough. There will always be challenges, so staying focused - and positive - is key. “Just remember why you started what you started,” Jimmy counsels. “Aqua Rugby is my passion. Music is my passion. They still put me under stress and there are days when I ask myself, ‘Why? Why?!' But then I take a deep breath and remind myself, ‘Jimmy, this is exactly what you wanted in your life. You can bloody do this and I'm proud of you." So how does one of the busiest guys in Sydney, find balance and create calm amidst the chaos? For Jimmy, it's simple: “Rest. Emotionally, spiritually, physically, you need to rest to be at your best.” Jimmy's book recommendation: The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr. And so, that's a big point that people don't even know where their liver is and so if they have a pain in their side, they don't know that it could be their liver or their gallbladder. That's still the system we have today.”“I'm not trying to have twenty companies where all the founders are carbon copies of each other. I'm looking for authenticity and people who certainly will have the grit, tenacity, and resilience, but also will listen. I want people who are uniquely qualified to solve the problem they're going after.”“There's a reason why healthcare and higher education are the two fastest rising costs from a service perspective in the country. Those are the two things where the inflation has been out of control.”“I set the expectation with [founders] regularly that I'm going to bring it to you and I'm gonna lean into conflict with you regularly because that's where the progress is.”“I started a new fund around this time last year called Jumpstart Nova. And it is a Series A Fund investing in innovative healthcare companies led by Black founders.”“I can tell you, having been through those heavy things, I've never been better in my entire life than right now. I've never been better in those three areas. I've never been better in business, I've never been better in relationships and being sober is awesome.” Links Mentioned: Kurt's TwitterKurt's Instagram Kurt's LinkedIn Marcus's TwitterMarcus' InstagramMarcus' WebsiteMarcus' LinkedIn Link to Marcus' Book: Create and OrchestrateJumpstart Health Website

From Brooklyn to Stanford University, Eugene's intellect and zeal propelled him into a plethora of exciting jobs and opportunities. Eugene shares pivotal moments — from starting a snow shoveling business as a young boy to discovering his knack for music and writing at Stanford — that laid the groundwork for his career. My grandmother didn't have it easy but, she paved the way for my family to have a better and easier shot at life than she did. From Brooklyn, NY to Santo Domingo, then back again, and finally to Florida. Here, she owned a dry cleaners for as long as I could remember and now she works in the clinic of a nearby elementary school. A woman who has worn ALL the hats. The Real Young Mom Podcast is a weekly podcast for young parents to find community and conversations they can relate to. A place to get educated; to be seen and heard. Each episode offers a unique insight into how Elle sees the different aspects of young parenthood and what it can bring. In this interview Elle and her grandmother discuss how one's upbringing and environment (good or bad) can influence their own parenting in the future, and how it can create a domino effect for generations to come until someone breaks the cycle.
