Active and athletic women can be hit hard by the menopause transition. Many of us have become accustomed to our bodies responding in a predictable way to our training and nutrition, only to have that sense of control slip away during the menopause transition. That can leave us feeling desperate for solutions–and vulnerable to predatory marketing. That's where mindset, especially acceptance, becomes an essential tool in our midlife toolbox. While there are steps we can take to feel and perform our best at every age and stage of life, there will always be some changes outside of our control. Accepting that isn't “giving up”, it's freeing yourself to stop battling your body and to truly appreciate all it does for you. This week we talk all about movement and mindset during midlife and menopause with fitness expert Maria Luque, PhD, menopause coach with Respin Health.Dr. Maria Luque is an energetic and accomplished fitness and menopause expert, former health science professor, and USAF veteran. With a PhD and MS in Health Sciences and over two decades of fitness experience, she combines academic expertise with practical insights. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist, ACE Certified Personal Trainer, ACE Fitness Nutrition Specialist, and NASM Women's Fitness Specialist. Dr. Luque is passionate about helping women in midlife re-imagine exercise, body image, and well-being. She's the founder of Fitness in Menopause, a company dedicated to helping women be healthier, stronger, saner, and more open to fun and adventure. Lots of experts have training and nutrition advice for midlife and menopausal women that is grounded in scientific evidence. Yet, the advice doesn't always agree…and doesn't necessarily work the same for everyone. That's because, while there are general guidelines that are helpful for many women, in the end, we are all scientific studies of one, and no one approach will work exactly the same way for every single woman. So, you need to be willing to experiment and trust yourself, which no one knows better than this week's guest, Hailey Babcock. Hailey offers her own training services and she partners with some of the biggest names in the business, helping turn their training and nutrition philosophies into practical advice on a personal level–something we talk all about this week.Hailey Babcock is the owner of Hailey Happens Fitness. We know that movement is one of the most important things we need to focus on after bariatric surgery; it's even one of BariNation's Pillars of Bariatric Success. We also know that it can be one of the hardest Pillars to live because of the role exercise played in our lives before bariatric surgery. If movement was how we “punished” ourselves for food-related decisions, we might not be overjoyed to start moving again. We sat down with Daryl Perry, ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Habit-Based Nutritional Coach, and founder of You Level Fitness to understand the connection between mental health and movement. We want to know what we can do when we know what we need to do but are having a hard time doing it. Our discussion explored some of the elements or things we might be inviting into our lives (looking at you, social media) that could be negatively impacting movement and shared how comparison and unrealistic expectations keep us stuck. We hope you leave this episode inspired to look at the things in your life that could be holding you back from moving more and adopting some new mindsets around movement that pull you towards more activity! Members of the BariNation Support Community and our Patreon supporters of the BariNation Podcast will get access to the amazing Bonus Episode with Daryl. On this episode Ariel is joined by Kim Rahir to talk about her amazing journey from being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis to winning a European Masters Weightlifting Championship. KEY TAKEAWAYS One day I started seeing double, which is so scary. My immune system started attacking the muscle that keeps the eye in place. While I was in hospital undergoing lots of tests my legs started to lose sensitivity and in 2 weeks I was paralysed from the hip down. In the moment I was scared, but right now, I'm grateful for what happened because it put everything into perspective, you wouldn't believe how much stuff I don't care about anymore, like being late or your child getting a bad grade, I really know now what's important and what's not. My doctor said my reflexes in the knee would never come back, but it came back with a vengeance, everything came back. I got so fit that I really didn't have the mindset of a sick person. You could call it denial, but I really just wanted to live my life. I kept training and lifting and did some fun stuff I'd never dared to do before, like mud racing. I was in my 50s and I would never have dared to do these things when I was in my 30s, I was having a hell of a time! My personal trainer suggested I try Olympic weightlifting which I remembered watching on TV as a girl, and I loved it right away because it's a mix of skill and strength and it's explosive. I'm convinced that becoming muscular saved my life and my health helped me to get out of this illness. When I work with clients everything gets better in their life when they get stronger. Science has been catching up really quickly over the last few years, we know now that muscle mass and muscular health is responsible for metabolic health (blood sugar management), functional independence – which helps you to have more fun and a more fulfilling life, and improved mental health. BEST MOMENTS “Exercise is great for MS because MS comes with a lot of fatigue and exercise makes your body fatigue resistant.”“The common wisdom is that, when you're older, don't do dynamic stuff, don't do explosive movements, go do your yoga class and hold yourself quietly in a corner.”“One of the leading causes of accidental death is tripping and falling. When you're 60-70 and have a fall there's a 50% chance of dying the next year.”“The muscle-mind connection sounds like a woo-woo concept but it's actually science.” ABOUT THE GUEST Kim Rahir is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, PN Level 1 Nutrition Coach, Buff Bones Osteoporosis Exercise Instructor, and RKC Certified (Kettlebell Training) who helps middle aged family women lose belly fat, gain mobility, vitality and longevity - sustainably. https://kimrahir.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. She's been at it for over 20 years, supporting busy women on their journey to understand their hormones and get them back under control so they can get back to their old selves when they felt great and had plenty of energy. Laini is a whiz at lab testing, but she starts by foundation first. I really like her approach, because so many functional medicine doctors, especially in the gut health space, can over test us and it's not always necessary. Laini gets this and respects each woman's personal journey, her budget and approach to healing. She lives in the real world, understands what is sustainable and realistic for the majority of the women out there and gets a lot done, with the minimum of time, money and effort. My goal is to make sure that you walk away from this episode truly understanding the ins and outs of health coaching and why so many people, like yourself perhaps, would benefit from working with one.Medical Disclaimer:By listening to this podcast, you agree not to use this podcast as medical advice or for making any lifestyle changes to treat any medical condition in either yourself or others. Consult your own physician for any medical issues that you may be having. This entire disclaimer also applies to any of my guests on my podcast. In part 1, I spoke with Michael Krug. Michael is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM-CPT). He has been practicing since 2018 and works with busy professional men to help them build strength and lose weight while increasing their energy and confidence. Though he currently embodies health, Michael has seen both ends of the health spectrum. In 2012 at the age of 20, Michael weighed 275 pounds, his blood pressure was 160/10 (with medication), he had dropped out of college, and was dealing with extreme depression. Through years of trial and learning, Michael developed simple but powerful strategies to reclaim his own health and now coaches others to do the exact same.In part 2, I spoke with Jen Bruno. Jen is a Board-Certified Health Coach (NBC-HWC) and ACE-Certified Personal Trainer who is passionate about health and wellness, behavior change, and inspiring people to live their healthiest and happiest lives. She has been a Certified Personal Trainer since 2008 and a Certified Holistic Health Coach since 2011 and has maintained a private practice for much of this time while also working in corporate wellness. She is certified through the American Council on Exercise (ACE), Wellcoaches, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches, the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, and the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) as a Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Coach. In part 3, I spoke with Ashley Honeycutt. Ashlee is the Director of Health Coaching Operations for YourCoach.Health and a Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach who has a passion for behavior change and supporting health coaches. She began her career as an educator, teaching elementary school and eventually moving into school administration, before discovering a zest for empowering healthy humans to achieve their best selves and live a life they love. We've all heard the advice about strength training in midlife and menopause, but not everyone knows why it's so important, or how to create a relationship with strength training that fits into your life. In this week's episode of Energetically You, I had the pleasure of interviewing Zack Rutldege about his journey and work with depression. He helps clients navigate depression with advice on nutrition, brain health, gut health and movement. He shares with us his story and how he became an expert on depression. The topics we touched on: How and when was he diagnosed with depression, what was the catalyst? What advice does he give to clients and friends in terms of your nutrition to boost recovery? Why is movement essential to brain health? Pickleball, juggling and second languages for brain health. His best piece of advice as you weather the storm of depression. Quotes “One of the places I love to start is the physical, because that is the transformation that you can see.” “Karate first gave me the ‘working in' that as a teenager I took for granted and then later I found that in yoga...it's like my new martial art.” “I built myself back up, brick by brick. The book is a consolidation of all that I learned over the years.” “If we were lucky (over the past year) to have the insight, we found the things that really mattered to us.” “Grief is something that you have to go through, and it sounds funny but it almost has a cleaner feeling to it [than depression.]” Thank you for listening!
