What up, Beasts! Welcome back to the show. Today, I'm hanging out with the incredible Anne Kent, a registered dietitian nutritionist and intuitive eating counselor, to talk about how we can truly nourish our bodies without falling into the traps of diet culture. We dive deep into the mindset shifts that happen when you stop restricting food, the importance of balancing nutrition with food freedom, and why learning to listen to your body takes time—but is so worth it. Anne shares how her background in diabetes education led her to create a meal planning app that actually supports intuitive eating (because, yes, you can have structure without dieting). We also get into the nuances of honoring your cravings while considering what actually makes you feel good, both physically and emotionally. We also tackle one of the biggest misconceptions about intuitive eating—the idea that it's just eating “whatever you want” without any thought. Anne breaks down how we can use our brain's executive functioning to make choices that align with both satisfaction and well-being, rather than swinging between restriction and chaos. We talk about healing your relationship with food, why feeling out of control around certain foods is often a sign of deeper restriction, and how to move past the pendulum swing to find real balance. Plus, I share my own experiences of unlearning diet culture's nonsense, including my ongoing journey to one day keep a pack of Oreos in my house without feeling like I need to inhale them all at once. This episode is packed with insights, real talk, and actionable takeaways—let's get into it! As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart-strings and/or I hope you laugh. Bio: Ann Kent is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and the owner of Peas and Hoppiness. Menopause is getting the spotlight it deserves. Gut health is not far behind. The science is clear, women's gut microbiomes change during peri-menopause and look a lot like men's gut microbiomes. During menopause, women experience a laundry list of physiological hormonal changes. How do these changes impact gut health—and how does gut health, in turn, influence the menopause experience? The balance of estrogen and progesterone shifts, leading to changes in the gut microbiome. This fragile ecosystem of bacteria in your digestive tract plays a crucial role in digestion and regulating hormones, supporting the immune system, and even affecting mental health. As estrogen levels take a massive dip, the diversity of gut bacteria can decrease, leading to issues like bloating, weight gain, brain fog, increased anxiety, sleep issues, and even increased inflammation. This episode explores how maintaining a healthy gut can ease some of the common symptoms of menopause. Practical strategies for supporting your gut health through diet, lifestyle changes, and possibly even supplements are offered to you. Whether you're currently navigating menopause or preparing for it, understanding the connection between gut health and hormonal balance is key to thriving during this transition. We cover the following:-how hormones affect the gut microbiome-why menopausal women lose microbial diversity and what to do about it-why Akkermansia is a superstar and its relationship to weight loss, appetite, and blood glucose regulation-bone health and Osteoporosis-what the estrobolome is and how to support it-travel constipation-optimal nutrition for gut healthKara Siedman is back to talk about menopause and gut health. Currently there are 37 million people in the United States with diabetes and another 96 million Americans who are currently pre-diabetic - and the vast majority of those people aren't even aware of it. About 70% of those cases of pre-diabetes will turn into diabetes unless the progression of the disease has stopped.Unfortunately, the U.S. healthcare system isn't designed to prevent and reverse until it's too late, and THIS is the impetus for today's discussion. We're in need of a Type 2 Diabetes Revolution and leading that charge are the authors who wrote the book with the same title- Jose Tejero and Diana Licalzi, MS, RD, CDES. As you'll hear today, Diana, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, along with Exercise Physiologist, Jose Tejero, want to help you achieve non-diabetic blood sugar levels while enjoying carbohydrates (yes, carbs), along with copious amounts of other delicious, plant foods.Their book and philosophy focus on the reversal of insulin resistance - which is the root cause of high blood sugar and their approach and meal plans have successfully helped individuals reduce their A1c and fasting blood sugar, lower their need for medications, and gain a deep understanding of health and nutrition.Even if you don't have high blood sugar, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, perhaps you have a loved one who does and may find it useful for the deep information dive and decadent recipes. We owe it to ourselves and our society to join this revolution together. About the AuthorsDiana Licalzi, MS, RD, CDCES, is a nationally-recognized Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist and holds her Master's in Nutrition Science & Policy. In 2019, Diana co-founded Reversing T2D, a digital health platform that helps individuals reverse, manage, and prevent pre- and type 2 diabetes. Reversing T2D uses an integrative approach to tackle diabetes focusing on plant-based nutrition, exercise, and mindset. Diana's previous books include Drinking for Two and Mocktail Party.Jose Tejero is an exercise physiologist with a degree in Exercise Science and is the co-founder of Reversing T2D. He has worked alongside nutrition experts and plant-based physicians who treat chronic illnesses, including type 2 diabetes. He observed the positive impact that plant-based diets had on the health of their patients and decided that he would dedicate his career to promoting the benefits of this diet. I've heard countless stories from folks who try to explain what life with T1D is really like to their endocrinologists. They nod along, but sometimes you can't help but wonder if they truly "get it." And let's be real, when your care team doesn't take the rest of your diabetes squad seriously, that's a whole new level of scary. Janice is a dietician and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) who's been in the game for over 40 years. She's seen firsthand what happens when doctors don't give their patients with T1D the attention they deserve. In her current role at an eating disorder clinic, she's had to fight to make sure her T1D patients get the care and support they need. In this episode, I had the honor of chatting with Janice. We dug deep into strategies she uses to make sure the rest of the healthcare team really understands what her T1D patients need. We even shared some tips for you and your support crew to advocate for yourselves effectively. Access to LiveFree with T1D is now open! To join, go to www.thediabetespsychologist.com.
