Diego Velazques was one of the most significant painters of Spain's Golden Age in the 17th century. He was a master of both portraiture and genre painting, Las Meninas is a sort of mix of both. We see people who seem rather formally dressed by today's standards, but the subject is also, it was a peak behind the curtain of royal life. Withing the work, the first focal point would be the little girl, the infanta margarita, daughter of the king and queen of spain. She is dramatically lit from the side by light streaming in from the window. The top half of the composition is essentially in shadow, and we see her looking out at us, the viewers. Diego Velazquez included himself in the scene as he stands before his giant canvas. Within this oil on canvas painting, we see a representation of a painter working on canvas. Velazquez also seems to break the fourth as he looks out at the viewer. There is a figure standing in the doorway in the back of the composition. The strong light in the doorway pulls our focus there as a secondary focal point, and that figure seems to be caught in motion and again, he looks out at us, the viewers. Emmet, George, and James preview the best bets for the weekend as jumps racing takes center stage at Cheltenham and Aintree. The lads all agree on a 10/1 shot, with James being very bullish about his best bet of the weekend. James and Emmet both have big-priced each-way bets, including one at 33/1. All three want to take on the odds-on favorite, Flooring Porter, on his chasing debut, and they're all in agreement on the horse to back against him. Plus, we discuss the matchup of millionaire horses as Aidan O'Brien's £2.5 million Diego Velazquez faces Charlie Appleby's £2,000,000 purchase, Ancient Wisdom, in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster. Aidan O'Brien joins Emmet Kennedy to discuss his running plans and the latest information on his team for Champions Day at Ascot, the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita, the Japan Cup, and Hong Kong. But we start by discussing his four individual Group 1-winning juveniles, beginning with his unbeaten Dewhurst winner, City Of Troy, and his potential to become the first Triple Crown winner in 54 years. Opera Singer looks like an exciting prospect, and Aidan shares running plans for her and explains the importance of their sire, Justify, and how he expects them to develop next year. We also talk about classic aims for Ylang Ylang and Henry Longfellow. The focus then switches to Champions Day as Aidan unleashes major firepower while aiming for his seventh British Trainers Championship. We discuss Kyprios, Aesop's Fables, Jackie Oh, Paddington, and Point Lonsdale. Aidan has more juvenile talent to unleash, and he talks about plans for Illinois, Military, Cambridge, Los Angeles, and Diego Velazquez, who runs in next week's Kameko Futurity Trophy Stakes Group 1 at Doncaster. Finally, we switch to the Breeders Cup and discuss Auguste Rodin, Henry Adams, Unquestionable, River Tiber, Content, Warm Heart, and the Japan Cup, where Continuous could be joined by Luxembourg. Jockey Dougie Costello joins Emmet to review the Irish Champions Festival with a view to the future and to look ahead to the St Leger at Doncaster. The lads start off by reacting to the Luke Comer doping ban that has rocked Irish Racing. Then they chat about Auguste Rodin's second Lazarus-like performance of the season, and Aidan O'Brien saddled the one-two in the Irish Champion Stakes. Can he win at the Breeders Cup? Where next for Luxembourg? And after the Amo Racing fallout, they debate, is King Of Steel really that good? The focus switches to future stars Diego Velazquez, Fallen Angel, and Henry Longfellow. Dougie has worked with one of these horses as a yearling and has serious doubts about one of these horses going forward. Then they switch to Dougie's upcoming rides on Saturday and the final Classic of the season, the St Leger, where the lads are in agreement on a bet. There's plenty of conversation, craic, and insight on a podcast so good that they had to record it twice! Most artists know that painting a portrait in a tradition where colour and form appear realistic takes years of training where trial and error play an important part. This is part 2 of my interview with leading portrait painter Paul Newton. He makes the analogy of a painter being like a cook and it's an appropriate one. And like a celebrity chef printing his secret recipes in a cookbook, Paul shares in this episode many of the lessons he's learnt through his years of experience. In the first of this two part conversation, Paul spoke with me about how he became an artist and the stories behind several of his stunning portraits. In this episode, we talk more about the creation of his paintings. Amongst other things, we talk at length about colour, he shares the pitfalls when using photographic references, the challenges of painting backgrounds and he shares an interesting approach on how to see work with fresh eyes, something crucial for portraitists painting in a realistic style. Paul is a fifteen-time Archibald finalist (including twice People's Choice and Packing Room Prize winner), has 6 works in the National Portrait Gallery's collection and has painted dozens of commissions of notable people from politicians to movie stars. Although there are already some video clips of Paul talking with me on the Talking with Painters Instagram and Facebook pages, I'll be publishing a longer video on the YouTube channel in coming weeks. In the 16th century a spate of European explorers pursued gold and glory across the so-called New World. Among them was Hernán Cortés, a fame-seeking descendant of Spanish warriors who became a soldier on Diego Velazquez's expedition to Cuba. His ambition ever rising, Cortés set his sights on a conquest he could call his own — the great capital city of the Aztec Empire, Tenochtitlan. Learn more about your ad choices.

In this episode, I talked with Rita Woker about Diego Velazquez and his masterpiece, Las Meninas. It was a great privilege to learn from Woker's insights as a person who has seen the work first hand in Spain and her ability to share not only what she knows of the piece from her research, but the experience of seeing such a monumental painting. Click here to see Las Meninas.
It is the puzzle that stumps all art historians. The enigma painting. The truly inscrutable masterpiece. It is Las Meninas (1656) by Diego Velazquez. What is going on in this ding dang thing!? Art historians have been debating that for centuries. We might never know. But one thing we do know for sure? Velazquez is very good at painting. And this just might be the best painting ever painted. Check our instagram for more details! https://www.instagram.com/artsistory/ And email us at artsistory@gmail.com

Other voyages that were undertaken during the year 1508. One headed by Juan Diaz de Solis and Vicente Yanez Pinzon, and a second by Sebastian de Ocampo. Cuba would be colonized and its appointed governor, Diego Velazquez, would organize voyages destined to discover other unknown regions.
With Mark Lawson. A Field In England is the first British film to be simultaneously released in cinemas, on DVD, video on demand and terrestrial television. Directed by Ben Wheatley and starring Reece Shearsmith from The League Of Gentlemen, it's a Civil War drama about a group of soldiers who ingest some magic mushrooms and encounter a mysterious figure who may, or may not, be the devil. Professor Roger Luckhurst decides whether it's a trip worth taking. With a CV that includes EastEnders, The Iron Lady and West End productions of Mamma Mia! and Yes, Prime Minister, Michael Simkins has a wide range of acting experience. He talks to Mark about his book which offers a practical guide to aspiring actors, including tips on what to do on stage if someone misses their cue and why you should always read the whole script. Eagle-eyed viewers of the new film Chasing Mavericks might notice that the new surf drama is credited to two directors, because Michael Apted completed the last few weeks of photography when the original director, Curtis Hanson, had to drop out for health reasons. But it isn't the first movie to have two or more directors in the credits, as critic Catherine Bray explains. Tonight's Cultural Exchange is by the outspoken art critic and historian Brian Sewell - who has chosen a painting by the Spanish artist Diego Velazquez (1599 - 1660) depicting Christ after the Flagellation. Called Christ Contemplated by the Christian Soul, the work is on display at the National Gallery in London. Producer Ekene Akalawu.
