Acclaimed New York Times award-winning author C.J. Box always delivers a mixture of suspense, the outdoors, and family relationships that are the heart of the Joe Pickett series. And so he does again in THREE-INCH TEETH, the 24thnovel in the Joe Pickett series. In this newest page-turner, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett faces two different kinds of rampaging beasts—one animal, one human. C. J. chats with Russell and Alan about what inspired this new story about a rogue grizzly bear and an ex-prisoner. Then, Shannon Baker returns to the podcast to introduce her recently released Kate Fox mystery, BULL's EYE, once again set in the Sand Hills of Nebraska. When a top bull breeder is mauled to death at a rodeo, Kate quickly realizes that this so-called accident hides a much darker truth. How deep is the corruption? Who will be left standing? Shannon fills Russell and Alan in on what it was like to research and write about a rodeo and what Kate Fox will be up to next. This week's song, written and performed by Micki Fuhrman, is “You Oughta See Wyoming.” C. J. Box, Shannon Baker, and Micki Fuhrman will all be featured at the Tucson Festival of Books on March 9-10 at the University of Arizona. Summer is right around the corner, and maybe your mind has already started wandering in that direction. How will you keep up with your ministry or business with the kids out of school, changing routines, and a body of water somewhere calling your name? Join me for Episode 113 of Just One Simple Thing where you'll learn four strategies to keep your goals on track for the summer.Among my Christian business and ministry friends and clients, I find there are two types of summer people ... some who shut it down and take a break during the summer, and others who try to keep the wheels turning while navigating all the challenges that summer can bring. And even some, like school teachers or staff, or homeschooling mamas, who use the break to lean into their work a little extra. This episode is for that second group ... some practical tips and strategies to keep you focused on your goals, while still enjoying the fun summer times.First strategy: make sure your goals for the summer are realistic. Before you run yourself ragged, adjust your expectations to fit easily into your summer plans.Second strategy: automation and systematization.Small tweaks can have a big impact on your productivity, the power of delegation and getting some help.Third strategy:  the power of delegation and getting some helpYou'll not only lighten your workload but also foster a sense of teamwork and collaboration within your ministry or business.Fourth strategy:  Find creative ways to involve your family in your work. Your family members may find new passions and skills to develop.Vacations and changing schedules may disrupt our routines, but they don't have to derail our goals. By applying these four strategies—set realistic expectations, automation or systematization, delegation, and family involvement—we can still have fun over the summerwhile staying firmly on track.ACTION STEPLay out your summer on a calendar and make sure your summer goals are realistic. Then list out three ways you can use these strategies to reach those goals. When the leaves start changing in the fall, you'll look back and be proud of what you've accomplished in your work and in your family.I'd love to know what you are planning to do for the summer. E104: My Favorite Trello Tips and Boards

Just One Simple Thing

Play Episode Play 29 sec Highlight Listen Later Mar 20, 2023 12:57

If you ask me how I keep things organized, my answer would be one word. Trello. Join me for Episode 104 of Just One Simple Thing where you'll learn how I use Trello to helpme and my clients save time and stay on track. If you aren't very familiar with Trello, it's a visual organizer. Information is put on Cards, which are organized in Lists, and saved on Boards. You can assign people and due dates to cards, create checklists on a card, and It's super easy to move cards around between Lists and Boards. Now that you have a visual, let's talk about a few time-saving tips. One of my favorites are Labels. These are little colored bars at the top of each card. You can set each color to represent whatever you want it to, and toggle between just a small colored dash, and a longer bar with the text of the label. It's helpful if your colors mean the same thing across all your boards. For me, the black label always means the task is completely done. Red usually means something is on hold, or waiting for info, or otherwise stuck. Green might mean the VA has done it and it's ready for me to check. My other favorite time saver is Automation.  I mainly use Rules and Board Buttons. For Rules, you set up a trigger that then starts one or more actions. Board buttons are similar, except the trigger is a button that Trello puts at the top of your board and the automation will start whenever you click the button.Let's wrap this up talking about a few of my favorite boards that keep my business rolling.  My Weekly Plan board works with my To-Do List to keep me on track every week. I also have a Social Media board. Another favorite is the Do A New Thing Hub. This is where all the important info about my business belongs. There's also the Do A New Thing Team board, where I have all the projects and ongoing tasks that the VA's are working on, so I can assign things to them, monitor the progress, and make sure they are not waiting on anything from me.  On the Clients board, I have a list for each of my one-on-one coaching clients. The first card in each list has their contact information, and a checklist of all the elements of their coaching package, so I can check them off as we do each one. Then there is a card on the list for each of our coaching sessions with my notes from the session. And one of my recent additions .... The Strategy Six Pack. This is part of my Simple Strategy Solution that keeps me on track with my most important strategic plans, and also functions as an idea capture system.ACTION STEPIf you are already using Trello, try one of these tips to make it even more efficient and let me know how it goes. If you aren't using Trello yet, head to my free Facebook group Plan & Pray with Do A New Thing and grab one of the Trello template boards I've linked there and get started. RESOURCESBuild A Better Quarter Workshop - learn to use the Strategy Six Pack Using Trello LabelsTrello AutomationBack Office Assessment by Shannon BakerFREE Define Call+++++++++++++++++++++++++++If you're frustrated because your business or ministry has you so overwhelmed, you may need an upgrade to your systems. E103: Fresh Ways to Save Time Using Canva

Just One Simple Thing

Play Episode Play 23 sec Highlight Listen Later Mar 13, 2023 10:40

Still think Canva is just for creating nice graphics? Think again. Canva has continued to update their product so that it has a unique offering of branding tools, website, video, and document creation, automation, and of course, graphic design. In Episode 103 of Just One Simple Thing, we'll look at some of the best time-saving tools for content creators inside Canva.Hey friends! Welcome back to our Time-Saving Tools series. So far, we've looked at the AI program ChatGPT in Episode 101 and Gmail in Episode 102. In in this episode, we'll dive into our favorite program for quickly creating high-quality graphics ... Canva.Canva has become the go-to tool for content creators to generate the graphics they need for social media, websites, and products. But the more recent additions to Canva branch out from downloadable graphics to include websites, documents, presentation tools, and a long list of app integrations. So let's look into some of the best features that will save you time. We'll start with Brand Kits. Your brand kit includes your brand colors, fonts, and logos. When you create a brand kit in Canva, they become available to you throughout the platform.Another easy one is Templates. Canva comes loaded with thousands of templates you can use to get started on your design. But you can also create custom templates.Another really cool feature is Bulk Create. This auto-generates multiple graphics from a template and a spreadsheet. We could go on forever about all the fun graphic elements and tools for creating the graphics, but since we are focused mainly on saving time, let's move away from graphics creation to some of the newer tools.Like Canva websites. Canva recently rolled out this feature that allows you to publish your design as a website. You can start with a Canva website template, or create your own. It's super easy to build by dragging and dropping elements just like you do in a graphic, changing background colors, sizing images, and laying it out exactly how you want it.  It is great when you need a quick landing page for a product or event, an information portal or a client portal.Another new-ish feature is Presentations ... Canva's answer to Power Point and Keynote. There's another feature where you can invite people to join you live while you are presenting without using any other software (like Zoom or Teams) and you can go back and forth between your presentation and other tabs on your desktop. So those are some of my favorite time-saving features in Canva. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. Next time you are creating a graphic, scroll down to the bottom of the far left toolbar and click on Apps. There are tons of things there to explore.ACTION STEP Head over to Canva and try just one new thing you haven't done before. And let me know how it's working out for you. You can follow me @doanewthing on FB and IG. I'd love to see what you are up to.In the next episode, we'll wrap up the Time Saving Tools series with tips for using Trello ... my favorite project management tool. I'll see you then, and I hope you'll bring a friend.RESOURCESVisit the episode page here for links to instructions and tutorials for these features.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++If you're frustrated because your business or ministry has you so overwhelmed, you may need an upgrade to your systems. E102: Time-Saving Tips to Manage Your Gmail

Just One Simple Thing

Play Episode Play 23 sec Highlight Listen Later Mar 6, 2023 14:12

How many emails do you get every day? It seems like I spend half my day in my email inbox. Thankfully, Gmail has some features that can actually save us time. Listen in to Episode 102 of Just One Simple Thing as I share my favorites.Welcome back to part 2 of our Time Saving Tools series! As I was preparing for this series, I did a poll on my Instagram stories asking which tools you'd like to learn more about. And would you believe ... Gmail was dead last!  Y'all are sleeping on Gmail. It has some built-in and add-on features that can save you tons of time. Let's talk about a few of my favorites. 1. Schedule Send- Allows you to pick a time in the future that your email will be sent. Very handy!2. Snooze- I can schedule them all to pop back to the top of my inbox later in the evening when I know I'll be able to read and respond. 3. Undo/Unsend-You may have noticed Gmail's Undo option flash by when you hit send, but the default only gives you five seconds to undo. Sorry, but at my age, my reflexes are not that fast! However, you can go to the settings and change the default to 30 seconds, which is more doable (or undoable!) for most of us.4. Templates-If you have emails with similar content that you send routinely, you can create a template of that email, then call up the template, adjust a few details, then send it off, instead of trying to re-type the whole thing.5. Snippets –Similar to Templates, Snippets allows you to quickly add commonly used text into an email. Our last two tips involve using folders and filtering to manage your inbox. If you listened to Episode 93 in the January Reset series, you know that I am not a big fan of having a lot of folders. However, there are a few things that are better kept all together and that's where labels, folders, and filters come in.6. Simple filtersThe first screen is where you tell it what you want to filter, either based on a from or to address, a word or phrase in the email, the size, etc. On the second screen, you select what you want to do with the filtered email. You can add a label, reply with a template, skip the inbox, and several other things.7. Filters with Alias emailIn a paid Gmail account, you can add up to 30 aliases for your main email address. Google recognizes the alias as the same email address and will put it in your inbox, unless you have a filter that says to put it somewhere else. However,if you have the free account, you can create aliases without any extra charges. Just add a plus sign to the first part of the email address, then a word after the plus ... like christa+subs@doanewthing.comSo those are my favorite Gmail time-saving tips, but if you search around, you will find tons of other ideas to automate and streamline your inbox.ACTION STEPPick just one of these tips and try it out.  Share your favorite tip on social media and tag me @doanewthing so I can be inspired by how you are using it. I hope you are enjoying this time-saving tools series. Do you have a friend who needs to save some time too? Be sure to share these episodes with her, so you both have more time for work AND play!RESOURCESVisit the episode page on my website for links to examples and tutorials for these tips.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++If you're frustrated because your business or ministry has you so overwhelmed, you may need an upgrade to your systems. In S2Ep22 of the PRP, Adam jams with seasoned long distance runner, race pacer extraordinaire, public health guru, proud mama bear and certified running coach Brandess Wallace who has been preparing for the Tunnel Hill 50 mile on November 12th, 2022. Brandess jumps right in and explains how and why her relationship with running is all about connecting with others. Although her involvement in the sport began as a platform for her to challenge herself on an individual level, Brandess spills the tea on why over the years her love affair with running has blossomed into much more than she could ever have imagined. Shannon Baker, serial running retiree, enthusiastic social worker, proud mother of eleven children (yep you read that right) and Brandess's heterosexual soul mate joins the show to provide insight on her own personal relationship with running as well as what it's meant to be a part of Brandess's journey. The two deep dive on the origins of their friendship, which started as opponents in a friendly neighborhood game of Bunco. From full fledged dice nemeses to running besties, as soon as these two got out for a trot together - the rest was history. Things get vulnerable when Brandess opens up and provides insight about some recent mental health struggles she has been forced to face. From raising children full-time to being a military spouse and everything in between, Brandess explains how her grapple with depression happened quickly and without her even fully realizing it. Although she is doing much better now, Brandess shares some principal insight on lessons learned from going through her recent experiences. The most importance of which? Never forget to prioritize YOURSELF. Self love and self care are paramount and are a crucial first step in providing others, personally or professionally, with the best version of you. How many of Shannon's kids were adopted?? What the hell is Bunco?! Heterosexual soulmates? What on earth is the mullet crew and why do they have merch?! Just how many times has Shannon retired from running? Peloton sleep meditation? What exactly do we mean when we say double deucin? T rex flex tights?! Is Adam crying??? All of this and SO MUCH MORE in this encouraging, hilarious and warm episode of the PRP. Now a resident of Tucson, Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1. Shannon is proud to have been chosen Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' 2014 and 2017 Writer of the Year. Baker also writes the Nora Abbott mystery series, a fast-paced mix of Hopi Indian mysticism, environmental issues, and murder. The first in the series, Height of Deception, is set in Flagstaff, AZ, where she lived for several years and worked for The Grand Canyon Trust, a hotbed of environmentalists who, usually, don't resort to murder. It was a 2013 finalist in the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards. A lover of the great outdoors, she can be found backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, hiking, cycling, and diving whenever she gets the chance. Having the desert for a backyard is a daily thrill, bringing javelinas, rattlesnakes, zillions of birds, and spectacular sunsets every day. Having Systems in Place Can Ease the Overwhelm Are you overwhelmed with finding time to get all of the things done in your life and business?  Similarly, maybe you've heard about all of these fancy systems and you've read about creating processes, but don't know where or how to begin using them. If you don't have time, to begin with, how do you decide which system you should invest in or what processes to create and implement?  I've asked myself these questions many times and just sat and stared at my computer screen in utter dismay. But Shannon Baker recently shared with me how we can strategically implement systems and processes so that we no longer need to fret about time. Who is Shannon? Shannon is a coffee-loving, serial entrepreneur, podcaster, and business systems coach who helps busy women with service-based businesses create systems to automate the time-consuming tasks required to run a business.  Doing so enables business owners to work more efficiently and have more time for what matters most. Through reading “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks and listening to The Mompreneur Mastermind Podcast, Shannon realized her zone of genius, systems, and processes. You Can't Operate Your Business Without Systems If you don't have systems in place, your business is running you.  You started a business for lifestyle freedom but if you are changed to everything in your business, it is not going to thrive the way you want it to.   Likewise, if you have to do everything in your business yourself, it's not going to survive. Shannon's motto is, keep calm and streamline. In other words, move out of chaos and into consistency.  You can't run a business without consistency.  To clarify, systems lead to consistency and consistency leads to happy clients, free marketing, and more referrals. To help her clients do this, Shannon has created her 6 Core Systems Method. The Six Core Systems Are: First, is a Central Filing System Be able to work on the go!  Never miss a deadline. Google Drive One Drive Dropbox Second is a Scheduling System Put boundaries around your schedule and keep your activities segregated to allow for more focus and fewer interruptions. Acuity Dubsado HoneyBook Calendly Third is Communication Inside your business and external potential and current clients Automate responses Email templates Direct Message response templates Fourth is Money Management Track money coming in and going out Spreadsheet Quick Books Keep a pulse on your money – cash flow The fifth is a Back-up System Emergency response system – if something happens to you, someone can step in and keep your business going. Let's talk about systems! My guest today is Shannon Baker, an expert at organizing and creating systems that simplify the way you run your business.    Our time matters. It's the one thing that we cannot create more of. As business owners, we are constantly working to manage our time better, so we can live the way we want to AND get things done.   Enter, systems and processes. So why is it that so many small business owners AVOID building systems that would free up time, earn them more money, and make everyone's experience better? Because it seems hard to do.   It can sound complex, which makes it daunting for anyone who already feels pressed for time. But it doesn't have to be, which is why I wanted to bring Shannon on the show. She makes it simple, and today she is sharing a 3-step process to help you become a master at building relationships with potential new clients.   Key Takeaways: You need a client database. You're more likely to use a simple system than a fancy one. Clients form their opinion of your relationship fast - so responsiveness is key.  The best news ever - you can build these time-saving systems a few minutes at a time. No matter how busy you are, you'll definitely have time for this.    Ps, make sure you are subscribed to the show, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Shannon Baker is doing what so many women entrepreneurs try to do: transition from a VA - or someone who is paid to do tasks- to a Strategist - someone who gets paid to create the overall action plan. Her company is Socially Savvy VA and she’s been in business for 7 years.  But, she’s done actually doing virtual assistant work...instead she wants to help her clients be more strategic about creating better work flows, efficiencies and systems.   So during this LIVE COACHING call, we’re going over… Who her avatar actually is (and who it’s not) What her offerings are and how she can tweak them to elongate the revenue potential for her AND create more success for her clients! Actions she can take NOW to communicate to the world that she is a systems strategist, not a VA. This is such a great session to listen to if you’re transitioning your offerings and want to make sure you’re attracting your dream clients! You can find out more about Shannon’s services here → https://sociallysavvyva.com/ *** The new year is here and I’m sure you’re feeling fired up to make this the best year yet for you! But guess what? That fire...that focus...that determination...if you’re human...it’s going to dissipate over the course of the next few weeks.  Because your best laid plans get interrupted by life, by surprises, by unintended occurrences.  And sometime in March, you’re going to raise your head from the hurricane of ideas, tasks and work you’ve been submerged in and remember those big goals you had back in January and wonder how in the world you can get back to a place of making them come true this year.   You’re not alone, girl.  We all start out the year strong and if we don’t have a program or the accountability or the structure to keep us focused and intentional with how we’re spending our time...it can all get lost.  It’s happened to me. And it’s happened to so many other amazing women entrepreneurs I know! Which is why I decided that this year is the year I wanted to work with just a handful of driven, determined and passionate women entrepreneurs...so we can go to work doing the deep and focused work it takes to create their dream businesses.   As of now, just a few spots remain for my 1 Year Private Coaching Program...a program that gives you and I the space and the structure to work hand in hand as you get clear about your vision, get focused in on what needs to happen in order to make that vision a reality and take intentional actions to see it come to fruition!  And with the regular accountability, the quarterly deep dive sessions and the kickoff Intensive...and with me here with you every step of the way...having the profitable and purposeful business that you enjoy showing up for every day is inevitable! To find out more about my 1 Year Private Coaching Program, go to http://BizWomenRock.com/mybigyear and apply today!  I’m responding to applications as they come in and spots are filling on a first come, first serve basis.   We can’t do this alone.  And if the structured and customized support of private coaching is what you need to finally achieve what you know you’re ready for in your business, then I can’t wait to read your application.  Let’s do this! http://BizWomenRock.com/mybigyear

The New Zealand-China relationship continues to come under the microscope as it's thought diplomatic links have plummeted to a new low. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was scheduled to visit China early this year, but the invitation has been put on hold. And this morning, the Herald revealed the 2019 China-New Zealand Year of Tourism was meant to be launched with great fanfare at Wellington's Te Papa museum next week, but that has been postponed by China. That initiative was announced by the Key Government almost two years ago when Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was in Wellington. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment says China has advised that this event has had to be postponed due to change of schedule on the Chinese side. Officials are now working with China to reschedule the opening. But it's thought that China sees New Zealand as taking sides with the United States, after the Government's chief spy agency, the GCSB, axed the Chinese telco giant Huawei from the Spark 5G broadband rollout. The Trump Administration publicly asked its Five Eyes partners not to do business with Huawei.Philip Burdon, a former National Government Trade Minister and recently chairman of the Asia New Zealand Foundation, says New Zealand can't afford to take sides. He believes China feels slighted by New Zealand over the decision to block Huawei. Also today, junior doctors go on strike, two men are charged over the December murder of Shannon Baker and Cocksy's last laugh.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shannon Baker is coming off what a year, as she puts it, when she let her attitude slip. Writing is a business, as Shannon also says, where there are plenty of opportunities to get your ego bashed. Now Shannon is climbing back out. Shannon recently announced that she has sold an option to the film rights to her Kate Fox Mystery Series and, for many reasons, Shannon is turning the page into the new year. We’ve got Shannon on the podcast to tell us about what led to the deal and also catch up on all her other projects, including a Facebook-based group called Authors Unwritten which also involves four other very familiar RMFW writers. Shannon Baker is author of Stripped Bare, Dark Signal and Bitter Rain in the Kate Fox Series, which also includes the novella Close Enough, and the Nora Abbott series from Midnight Ink. Shannon, who lives in Tucson, loves to escape into the great outdoors. Backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, hiking, cycling, and diving whenever she gets the chance. Having the desert for a backyard is a daily thrill, bringing javelinas, rattlesnakes, zillions of birds, including hummingbirds, and spectacular sunsets every day. But as she says on the podcast, the main goal is writing. “We have to find our own focus,” says Shannon. “And it’s a constant battle.” Shannon Baker's website Intro music by Moby Outro music by Dan-o-Songs

Last summer, Shannon Baker was named Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers’ Writer of the Year – for the second time! So life as a published writer should be on a never-ending upward spiral of success, correct? Well, Shannon Baker is a survivor of the wild and ever unpredictable publishing-world roller coaster and on the podcast she talks about the bruises and how she managed her way through the sometimes challenging gauntlet. And she’s here to break some fresh news that shows the roller coaster continues to move. She has started a new series and developed a new approach to writing focused on a brand new character. Shannon is also co-chair this year of the Colorado Gold writing contest and she chats a bit about that process and, of course, the benefits of RMFW in general. A self-proclaimed desert rat and (aspiring) NYT bestselling writer, Shannon Baker, is the author of the Kate Fox mystery series set in the remote Nebraska Sandhills. She generously brings this unique setting to life with humor and affection so you don’t have to actually go to Nebraska to experience it. Kirkus says: “Baker serves up a ballsy heroine, a colorful backdrop, and a surprising ending.” She is grateful to be voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer’s 2017-18 Writer of the Year. This is an inspiring chat about never giving up and Shannon provides ample evidence that writing and publishing can be a highly subjective business. Shannon Baker: Hi. How are you? Alexandra: Very well, thank you. How are you? Shannon: I'm great. I'm down in sunny Tucson. It's beautiful here. Alexandra: No rain today? Shannon: No. Yeah, we have rain like five days a year. Alexandra: So, today isn't one of them? Shannon: No. Alexandra: Okay, good. So, you're staying dry while Irma is trying to destroy other parts of the country. Shannon: That's so sad. Alexandra: It's terrible, yeah. So, let me introduce our listeners to you. Shannon Baker is the author of the Kate Fox Mystery Series set in the isolated cattle country of the Nebraska Sandhills. She also writes the Nora Abbott Mystery Series featuring Hopi Indian mysticism and environmental issues. Shannon makes her home in Tucson where she enjoys cocktails by the pool, breathtaking sunsets, a crazy Weimaraner, and killing people in the pages of her books, of course. She was voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' 2014 and 2017 Writer of the Year, which is very exciting, Shannon, I understand you just got back today from that conference. Shannon: I did. Just this flew in this morning. It was so much fun. If there are any writers out there and you're looking around for a writers' conference, Colorado Gold is always in Denver in September and it's a fabulous conference. You should go. Alexandra: Excellent. Oh, good. Okay. Well, thanks for that plug. Let's start by talking about Kate Fox. Tell us a little bit about her background. Shannon: Kate Fox is a 30-something. She lives in the Nebraska Sandhills and that's a place I lived for 20 years. So, it has a population density of 0.95 people per square mile and it's...the Sandhills cover about 30,000 square miles. It's, you know, takes up a quarter of the state of Nebraska. Alexandra: Wow. Shannon: So, it's a huge empty place and Kate lives there. She's related to everybody in the community. She's one of nine kids and she's related to everybody. She's fourth generation so she's a total insider. And when Book One opens, she's just living the exact life she's always wanted. She's living on a cattle ranch. She's managing her husband's cattle ranch and he's the sheriff. And she's taken in her niece. Loves her niece,
