Abandoned airports. Shipping containers. Squatted hotels. These are just three of the many unusual places that have housed refugees in the past decade. The story of international migration is often told through personal odysseys and dangerous journeys, but when people arrive at their destinations a more mundane task begins: refugees need a place to stay. Governments and charities have adopted a range of strategies in response to this need. Some have sequestered refugees in massive camps of glinting metal. Others have hosted them in renovated office blocks and disused warehouses. They often end up in prefabricated shelters flown in from abroad. Fragments of Home: Refugee Housing and the Politics of Shelter (Stanford University Press, 2024) by Dr. Tom Scott-Smith focuses on seven examples of emergency shelter, from Germany to Jordan, which emerged after the great "summer of migration" in 2015. Drawing on detailed ethnographic research into these shelters, the book reflects on their political implications and opens up much bigger questions about humanitarian action. By exploring how aid agencies and architects approached this basic human need, Dr. Scott-Smith demonstrates how shelter has many elements that are hard to reconcile or combine; shelter is always partial and incomplete, producing mere fragments of home. Ultimately, he argues that current approaches to emergency shelter have led to destructive forms of paternalism and concludes that the principle of autonomy can offer a more fruitful approach to sensitive and inclusive housing. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Chris Duffin believes in living life at the extremes—extreme performance, extreme competence, and extreme achievement.  A true-to-life mountain man with his story as a best-selling autobiography and upcoming documentary movie Chris has numerous accolades to list. From sitting on the board of OregonTech, where he received his engineering degree, to also on the board of the College of Functional Movement Clinicians. He holds awards and records for his inventions and unduplicated feats of strength. Using his engineering degree and MBA, he spent nearly 20 years becoming a sought-after turnaround expert in the aerospace, automotive, and industrial equipment manufacturing sectors. But most people know him for his work after moving on from that career, founding his own Education and Manufacturing companies focused on biomechanics, human movement, and personal development. As an award-winning expert in these fields, he holds patents and has been recognized for scientific innovation, and is a desired keynote speaker. In the sports performance world, Chris's work is everywhere. His game-changing products are used in nearly every professional sports team in North America, all the big-name colleges and a thousand others, all military branches (white house included), and so many more. His concepts have changed the landscape of strength training in improving performance and the systemized approaches to assessing and correcting human movement dysfunctions. With extremes again, Chris is not just a recognized thought leader but has held numerous all-time world records and become one of the strongest pound-for-pound powerlifters in the world. He holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest sumo deadlift of all time, with 1001 pounds for almost three repetitions. He also completed the same feat with a 1001lbs squat making him the only human in history to have Squatted and Deadlifted 1000+lbs for reps. He used these feats of strength to raise money and awareness for charities related to his upbringing. As for the true-to-life mountain man portion might be best left to his first book, “The Eagle & The Dragon.” Growing up homeless in the wilderness. He was raised in an abusive and chaotic household (tent, shack, tree fort at times) where his childhood was composed of skinning rattlesnakes, foraging for food, and protecting his sisters and mother. With stories of dealing with murderers, drug running and abuse, human trafficking, death, a serial killer, and extreme poverty. He could attend college as a star athlete and valedictorian after graduating high school. In college, he worked full-time to take custody of his three younger siblings and get them out of that toxic environment. It seems pointless even to add the part that he still graduated from college at the top of his class. Today, Chris is an advisor and Chief Engineer/Visionary to Kabuki Strength & Bearfoot Shoes. He is focused on his passion for personal development with his philosophies and tools around mindset, goal setting, execution, and deep introspection. He is the father of three wonderful children and husband to an amazing Canadian chef who appears in reality-TV cooking shows. If he's not with his family, working on himself and his businesses, or remodeling his house, you can find him in his shop perfecting his Mad Max off-road war machines. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Chris Duffin about the truth regarding squat shoes.   Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How ankle mobility is crucial for optimal positions in weightlifting movements. - How your footwear choice impacts muscle engagement, biomechanics, and injury prevention. - Why improving bracing techniques can enhance force output and reduce injury risk. - How specialized weightlifting shoes can improve performance in specific movements but may hinder overall athletic development. - How strong feet and ankles are essential for proper alignment, load distribution, and resistance training. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Chris Duffin who gives incredible life advice. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How life involves pain and difficulty, but people have the power to choose where to direct their efforts. - Why it's important to find your next challenge rather than settling for mediocrity. - How parents should set good examples for their children so they can chase their own goals. - Why children need a stable environment that allow them to experience failure and learn from it. - How consistent success without failure can hinder the development of confidence. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Anti-squatted AI x-risk domains index, published by plex on August 12, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I heard about a recent case of a relevant domain being squatted, and figured that the people who buy up domains then sell them at a markup might start to notice the growth of interest in AI x-risk and claim some domains which would otherwise host good projects. I've bought the following, and will make them available for use by anyone in the x-risk community. aisafety.global - Conference?aisafety.careers - 80k said they were happy for others to join the spacealignment.careersalignment.academy - Training program?alignment.courses - List of all training programs (using Stampy answer as backend)?aisafety.ventures - Entrepreneurs org?aisafety.fund - AIS-specific funding org?aisafety.foundationaisafety.institutexrisk.fundxrisk.foundationagisafety.info - Useful if we fall back to AGI Safetyagisafety.xyzaisafety.coach - More orgs in the direction of AI Safety Support?aisafety.devaisafety.network - Peer-to-peer researchers something?aisafety.quest - Project Eurler for AIS?agisafety.questaisafety.worldalignment.fyialignment.plusagisafety.wiki - alt. Stampy's Wiki branding?alignment.wiki Others: x-risks.com - Drew Spartz This cost ~$200 of personal funds for the first year, and closer to $500/y going forward as the onboarding discounts wear off. I estimate saving one or two wanted domains from being squatted and the hassle / cost of acquiring it or moving to a worse domain would make this worthwhile for several years, so this seems probably positive EV. The main downside risk would be from people who want these domains not knowing they're available, so I have forwarded all of these domains to my home page. Hopefully people who want them will check there to track me down and request them. This is not perfect, but seems better than waiting for them to be sniped. Edit: Most (but not all! despite apparently identical settings!) of the redirects are not currently functioning. Will look into and fix. If you would like to list your own available relevant domains in the comments that would be welcome, I'll add them to this post and the LW cross-post. I will point them towards the servers of anyone who claims to have a half decent plan for the domain, and hand over the domain fully if they build something which seems useful. Thanks for listening. 4 guests (Pablo Vanneste, Shoko Nagamachi, Hans Pruijt, Debra Solomon) come together to discuss and digest food forests, squatting, public space, and the commons concepts. i.e. the squatted eco-village. “You're not dependant on making demands to the authorities. In normal protests, you demonstrate and petition in the hope that someone will listen. But in squatting you don't need this. You can do it on your way. You can build something. You can create something.” Hans Pruijt. “Hardin and Ostrom point out that there are ways in living within this planet that work, working with nature, and ways of living that don't work, working against nature, slowly digging your own grave.” Pablo Vanneste. Pablo shares 4 things necessary for an ecologically sustainable community: 1. Recognise nature as the teacher 2. Learn through real world experience. 3. Sustainable living is deeply rooted in ecological knowledge. 4. Community & co-creation. Pablo Vanneste is a researcher and teacher of food forestry at Wageningen University & Research, resident of P-pauw [ppauw.nl/], and member of Toekomstboeren [toekomstboeren.nl/]. Shoko Nagamachi leads the humans in the green tribe garden, is a classical pianist, and resident of the Green Tribe [greentribe.nl]. LETS UNPACK THE BACKSTORY. No pun intended. Here's what I learned from a former guest, Dr. Tommy J. CurryWe, as a society, should conceptualize the Black male as a victim. Dr. Curry argues that Black men struggle with death and suicide, as well as abuse and rape, and their existence deserves study and theorization. READ THE BOOK Dr. Curry's book, The Man-Not, offers intellectual, historical, sociological, and psychological evidence that the analysis of patriarchy offered by mainstream feminism (including Black feminism) does not yet fully understand the role that homoeroticism, sexual violence, and vulnerability play in the deaths and lives of Black males. Curry challenges how we think of and perceive the conditions that actually affect all Black males.https://www.spreaker.com/user/valeriedenisejones

Here are some of his accomplishments - Arnold - Best Lifter at the Arnold Sports Festival in 2009, 2010 and 2011, 2012. Competes in the Raw 205 class. Bench press 210 kg (463 lbs) The Arnold - Grand Prix by SBD 03/03/2018 Deadlift 310 kg (683 lbs) The Arnold - Grand Prix by SBD 03/03/2018   Here are some of the topics we discussed: How much does your weight fluctuate throughout the year? Do people at work or who know you outside of powerlifting think you are crazy or do they understand what it is that you do and why you do it? Who are your direct competition and how much does that drive you? John Haack, Ashton Rouska, etc Squatted 292.5 and missed 310, PB was 325.5 at Pacific Internationals back in April 30, 2017. Set bench press PR 210 kg (previous was 207.5 kg back in Oct 2017 and deadlift PR 310 kg (previous was 305 kg back in Oct 2017). Missed PR new total is 812.5 kg (previous was 825.5 kg back in April 2017). Do you think the judges were too nit-picky about depth in the squat? It appears you were just there at depth, did you think you were high or was it obvious to you as well? Squats seem to be difficult for you since Pacific Internationals where you went 9 for 9. Is it a mobility issue that you are working through? Your bench and deadlift has steadily improved, what do you attribute your progress? Do you think you’ll hit a raw 500# bench in comp someday? (Or gym) You started out Equipped...any thoughts on going back to equipped? You broke a bunch of state records in your bench press and deadlift PRs as well as national records. Do you have any American record breaking goals you would like to set in the future? What specific meets do you look forward to competing at and why (Raw Nationals, IPF Worlds, particular invitationals)? How many days a week do you train and have you ever considered other sports (strongman, weightlifting)? How are you involved in powerlifting outside of competing?

Lift Heavy Run Long Podcast - Inspire. Be Inspired.

https://youtu.be/jBUp_-R6sSA You will want to tune-in to this one. On episode 61 of the LHRL™ Podcast we speak with Tony Cowden of Competitive Edge Performance. He is an incredibly tough and rugged endurance athlete with a humble and kind spirit. We could have easily made this a 5-hour episode, as his adventures just brought about more questions. Tony Cowden was an outstanding guest who has done great things with his life, and even better things for our country. Tony has 22 years in the Special Operations community, serving over 8 years and 28 deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and other Central Asian and Africa countries.  He began training for and competing in triathlons in 1998 and in 2005 in functional fitness competitions. He got his Level 1 CrossFit® Certification in 2006. He affiliated CrossFit Wilmington in 2007. He qualified for the 2012 Games., is a USAW Masters Weightlifting Champion in both the 94kg and the 105kg divisions.  He is a successful triathlete, completing more than 50 races, including Iron Distance races. Tony coached his first athlete to The CrossFit Games in 2009, and has since sent 16 more, including teams and masters athletes. He has sent 28 athletes to The Games Regional competitions, and developed Powerlifters, Strongman Competitors, triathletes, Ultra Endurance athletes and Military personnel. In recent years, Tony has helped lead the way in developing hybrid endurance and strength athletes, especially within the military.  His END|Strength™ Programming develops high levels of endurance and strength simultaneously and has become the go to of the US military special operations personnel as well as athletes looking for new challenges. Proving his END|Strength methods, he completed the Beach 2 Battleship Half IronMan Triathlon in 6 hours and the following day Squatted 505lbs and Deadlifted 565lbs. On April 9th, 2016 Tony squatted 600lbs, Deadlifted 600lbs and ran a sub-six minute mile (5:41), making him one of the very few who have completed The 666 Challenge…  the only man over 40 years old to. In September 2016, Tony completed the first annual 106º West Half Iron Distance Triathlon in Dillon, CO. At 10,000 plus ft, the 106 West is the highest elevation triathlon in the World. With early morning temps at just over freezing, gusting winds, water temp of 50 degrees, and the steep climbs you would expect of the Colorado Rockies, the 106 is one of the most challenging. Continually proving the END|Strength methods, two days after the race, Tony squatted 505lbs and Deadlifted 505lbs for 6 reps. Most recently Tony attempted his first ultra endurance event… the BigFoot 200.  A 200 mile ultra marathon in the Cascade mountains of Washington state.  From the hot desert of Mt. Saint Helen’s desolation zone, to the wet forests, and freezing temps during the night, the Bigfoot bested Tony.  His first ultra also turned out to be his first ever DNF.  At 131 miles, he ran out of time.  A testament of our methods and his dedication to purpose, Tony dropped 35lbs of bodyweight in the 5 weeks prior to the race and maintained a 500lbs squat and 550lbs deadlift throughout the endeavor. There is quite literally no other coach with Tony’s resume and experience.  It sets him apart…  but what really makes him a higher caliber athlete and coach is his commitment to applicable, proof based knowledge.  He will only coach athletes and even speak on topics he has up to date and relevant experience in.

This week we featured two conversations in the episode. "Stop The Pipelines Action Camp" Firstly, Bursts chatted with erin.  erin is a resident of the Blacksburg VA area and an affiliate of Blue Ridge Rapid Response Project (or BRRRP) and is helping to organize the "Stop The Pipelines Action Camp" in that area from July 13-17th, 2017.  The action camp is being organized in hopes to spread resistance to the Mountain Valley & Atlantic Coast Pipelines that are traversing Appalachian West Virginia, Virginia and, in the ACP's case, North Carolina. We talk about what it is to live in a place and defend your home, to get to know your neighbors, to build the skills needed to resist ecocidal, capitalist infrastructure projects. More info at https://blueridgerapidresponse.wordpress.com. The event is being co-sponsored by Smokey Mountain Eco-Defense (SMED). You can find a flyer, here. erin mentions pipeline security pursued by mercenary groups like TigerSwan as well as industry-sponsored astro-turf (or fake grassroots) group YourEnergy meant to muddy the water of community resistance to pipeline expansion and other infrastructural projects. Errekaleor Bizirik! After that, Bursts chatted with 2 residents of the squatted neighborhood of Errekaleor Bizirik in the Basque territory within the borders of so-called Spain.  The residents talk about the history of Errekaleor Bizirik, feminism, energy infrastructure, recent attacks by police on the project and pre-figuring a post-capitalist life-way in the rubble of the existent. For more info on the project, which translates to Dry River (Errekaleor) Lives (Bizirik)!, check out: The draft wikipedia page; An IGD post about the project with links and context; Their Coopfunding page. From their post on igd, is this quote: "For those of you that are too far away to personally attend, feel free to make a quick call to the mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz Gorka Urtaran at +34 945 16 13 82 or +34 945 16 13 83 or send us a message at errekaleorbizirik@gmail.com!" We wanted to also state that the folks at Errekaleor reached out to us for the interview, which was super awesome.  If you have a project, a book, an article, a fight that seems like it'd be interesting to us and our listeners, send us an email at thefinalstrawradio@riseup.net and get the ball rolling. Announcement The Arizona based humanitarian aid group No More Deaths (No Mas Muertes in spanish) has been under semi constant surveillance by Border Patrol for the past week. This is unprecedented attention; since its foundation in 2004 this group has had a written agreement, essentially a non interference good faith contract, with Border Patrol that names the group as a health aid and humanitarian group that has every right to be doing the work it's doing. NO More Deaths is a group based on certain faith principles (it is an official ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Tuscon) and on critical engagement with policy reform, nevertheless it is a group that has a high degree of anarchist involvement and solidarity with what could be called anarchist principles. It is most famous for desert aid; volunteers hiking out and leaving supplies such as water - essential in the 100 plus degree heat - food, socks, blankets, other supplies, and directed first aid where needed along remote corridors in the Sonoran Desert. The group also engages with legal aid, abuse documentation, searching for missing or disappeared people, helping getting belongings back from Border Patrol, networking with other border solidarity groups in the area, and consciousness raising and education to subvert the extremely stale narrative that immigration has in the US. A couple of days ago, after almost a week of constant surveillance, Border Patrol raided a camp "in an unprecedented show of force, [with] approximately 30 armed agents raided the camp with at least 15 trucks, two quads, and a helicopter to apprehend four patients receiving medical care." We hope to talk with someone about this situation soon for the radio show; the fact that this raid is coming now is a clear sign of the administrations attitude toward this kind of work. Recorded at Log's house, there was only one place far enough away from the fans of Log's asthmatic PC, yet within the range of a medium-length USB cable. Squatted around a microphone at the top of his stairs, like a gang of chatty stair chimps. Thanks in advance for enjoying our podcast and buying twenty PS4s at greenmangaming.com/regularfeatures
