Proximate cause is a fundamental and often complex concept in tort law that determines the extent to which a defendant can be held legally responsible for harm caused. While "cause-in-fact" (or "actual cause") establishes a factual link—"but for" the defendant's action, the injury would not have occurred—proximate cause acts as a legal and policy filter, limiting liability to consequences that are sufficiently related to the defendant's conduct (AllLaw; Reddit; Torts Lecture Twenty-One; Number Analytics). As the Latin proverb states, "Injure non remota causa sed proxima spectatur" – in law, only the immediate (proximate) cause should be considered, not the remote cause (IIPSeries).TakeawaysProximate cause is essential for understanding legal responsibility in torts. The distinction between actual and proximate cause is foundational in tort law.Foreseeability is a key component in determining proximate cause.Intervening causes can complicate liability but do not always absolve the original defendant.Superseding causes break the chain of liability, absolving the original defendant. The eggshell plaintiff rule holds defendants liable for the full extent of injuries, regardless of the plaintiff's pre-existing conditions.Judicial approaches to proximate cause vary, influencing case outcomes.Proximate cause applies across negligence, strict liability, and intentional torts.Policy considerations in proximate cause aim to balance fairness and limit liability.Understanding these principles is crucial for success in tort exams and legal practice.

The number one cause of disabiliity worldwide is lower back pain. Great news, then, that a rigorous study says we can halve its recurrence by... walking. But there's a catch.
What a race. At the beginning of the year, I started noticing changes in my heart and mind. With Ironman 70.3 St. George and Ironman 70.3 Boulder already on my schedule, I knew these two races would close a 25-year chapter of chasing Ironman goals. After a disappointing race at Ironman 70.3 St. George, I realized I had my work cut out for me going into this last race.In the five weeks between the St. George race and Boulder, I focused not only on physical training but also on building mental fitness. The race I had on Saturday exceeded my expectations. With so many of my amazing friends and family lining the course, and combining a solid swim, bike, and run with proper nutrition and mental strength, I knew this race would be a tribute to what triathlon has meant to me and how it has shaped me into the person I am today.During the second part of the run, euphoria set in, and I realized I may never experience a race like that again. I thank my lucky stars, my angel mama, my Father in Heaven, and all those who sent me their love and energy. We often don't realize that what we do can inspire others, but I know I've been inspired countless times by watching others' athleticism. If you're looking to reach the next level in something and see how it can transform and uplift your life, this could be the perfect episode for you. The Psychology of Self-Injury: Exploring Self-Harm & Mental Health
In this episode, Dr. Jonas Bjärehed from Lund University in Sweden walks us through his research on nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) that he began in 2007 as part of his dissertation project. For example, he shares high prevalence rates of NSSI in Sweden (~40%) and discusses gender differences of NSSI among adolescents in 2007 compared to 2023. He also explains the results of a 10-year longitudinal study in which he surveyed individuals as adolescents about their self-harm and then surveyed the same group as adults 10 years later.Learn more about Dr. Bjärehed's research here and connect with him on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/jonasbjarehed.
