This week's ⁠American Swimming Coaches Association⁠ talk comes from ⁠Amy Parratto⁠. At the time of this talk, Amy and husband Mike Parratto were coaching the Seacoast Swimming Association (SSA) in New Hampshire. In 2010, after 26 years at Seacoast, they moved to Indiana where they both coached at Lawrence Swim Team while their daughter Jessica trained at the USA Diving National Training Center based out of IUPUI. They finally ended up in Minnesota where they run ⁠Riptide Swim Team⁠ in Apple Valley. Amy has coached both swimming and diving since 1983 in New Hampshire and Indiana. She is an ASCA Level 4 certified coach. In addition to her coaching duties, she serves as Riptide's team manager. Amy is a graduate of Wellesley College ('83) where she swam and dove all four years and earned a B.A. in Psychology and Studio Art. She is a five-time All-American in diving and was inducted into the Wellesley Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Amy and Mike have coached together since 1984. They have two grown daughters - Melissa and Jessica, a 2016 Rio Olympian in the individual and synchronized platform events and 2020 Tokyo Silver Medalist in synchronized platform diving. Amy's talk discusses the long-term development of age groupers in swimming, and the strategies coaches can use to keep swimmers motivated and engaged.

This week's American Swimming Coaches Association talk comes from Olympic gold medalist, Anita Nall. Anita joined the swim team at the age of five. By age 12, she set age group records and at 14 years old notched an American record. Swimming for Coach Murray Stephens at the legendary North Baltimore Aquatic Club, she developed a technically-perfect breaststroke using the new-style stroke of the time. At age 15, only a sophomore in high school, she qualified for the 1992 Olympic team. In the process, she set two World Records on the same day in the 200 meter breaststroke. Competing as the “baby” of the 1992 Barcelona Team, Nall won gold, silver and bronze medals swimming the breaststroke events. Her gold medal swim came as a member of the 4x100 meter medley relay, which also set the World Record. Her silver medal came in the 100 meter breaststroke as she was just out-touched by Russia's Elena Rudouskaya, and the bronze medal in the 200 meter breaststroke where only point two seconds separated gold from bronze. Nall continued swimming after the Olympic Games, winning gold medals in the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke at the 1993 Pan Pacific Championships. Due to chronic health problems that went incorrectly diagnosed for years, her swimming faltered and she was unable to qualify for the 1996 or 2000 Olympic Teams. Today, Nall is a Holistic Nutrition Specialist focusing on nutrition and wellness where she conducts workshops. Aspekty społecznościowy, poczucie przynależności i wsparcia grupy są bezcenne i pozwalają rozwijać swoją odporność na wiele stresy związane z wyzwaniami zawodowymi oraz efektywniej kierować własną karierą. GAIN może to dać. Może, bo musisz otworzyć się na inny świat niż ten, w którym funkcjonujemy w Polsce, a myślę, że i w Europie. Te różnice to nie kwestia ferowania wyrokami „dobry” czy „zły”, „lepszy” czy „gorszy”. Jestem człowiekiem osadzonym w postawie pronaukowej, ale muszę czasem zadziałać „off label” lub jak to promuje Vern Gambetta „color outside the lines”. O ile tylko działania komplementarne nie staną się alternatywnymi to będzie to z zyskiem dla sportowca. Nauka udowodniła też, że czynniki behawioralne i kognitywne są kluczowe dla osiągania wysokiej wydajności sportowej i odporności psychofizycznej. It would be no exaggeration to say it would easier to list the things Vern hasn't done – he's currently the Director of Gambetta Sports Training Systems and has been a conditioning coach for several MLS teams, the Nike Oregon Project, Chicago Bulls, and was conditioning consultant to the US Men's World Cup Soccer team, plus much more. Vern's experience spans 53 years at all levels of competition after starting out in teaching. From here, Vern explains the value in the ‘old school' attitudes and methods, and how that can translate into modern day coaching with skills that are now often in short supply.
