Iron Sharpens Iron with Jerry Ghionis

Send us a Text Message.Get OBSESSED. Like so obsessed within your creative process that you grow, evolve, and become more as an Artist. Jerry shares how if you're only considerate of the outcome; the final shot, the revenue, then the joy experienced from achievement is only from the result. It lasts for a fraction of a second, and it is in his obsession with the process of creating that he stays IN the joy of being a professional Artist. That's the key. There are seasons, & one of those seasons is in building the workflows and systems required to maintain and grow a business BUT, we chose to create the business because we love creating. Photography is the vehicle in which we create for ourselves, and our clients. Without our connection to the creativity, we cannot grow. The season of creative exploration should never sideline for long. Arguably, it should be a priority in every season. There are multiple ways in which we can grow creatively; workshops, conferences, studying under a mentor, but one of the ways in which this photographer has found to be effective in that exploration is through awards submissions and accreditation. Can we play and grow in that exploration without it? Sure. Of course you can, but something shifts a bit in your mindset when you're submitting for review in these spaces: you obsess over details, you push yourself and hold yourself accountable TO every step of the process of creating. You're competing with yourself.Having entered into the photo space in the 90's, Jerry discovered how he loved being in the room with the Olympians of photography. And so many can feel intimidated in competition spaces because of those "heavyweights" however Jerry took it from a different approach, he was inspired by them.He took that inspiration and dove into unearthing his obsession with the creative process to deepen his love and connection with his work and those he was creating with and for.Jerry became immersed in the awards space that he connected to his client work with the mindset that "Today will be the album of the year!" because he was in competition with himself at every step, and has since elevated that connection to the photo industry in carrying the torch for WPPI and The Portrait Masters with the ICON Awards, led by he and his wife Melissa.Buy yourself some creative freedom. In the beginning stages of our businesses, our work doesn't always fit the vision we have in our heads and hearts. But in the business, we HAVE to serve, we have to connect, we have to get clients - but it is in that work that we are able to buy ourselves a bit of freedom to yes, sustain the business, but also to create on our terms as we grow as Artists too.Join us for this year's ICON Award submissionsEarly Bird deadline is August 31Submissons here: https://www.iconawards.com/Instagram: @myiconawardsFind more about Jerry Ghionis here:Education website: https://www.ghionis.com/Photography website: https://www.jerryghionisphotography.com/Instagram: @jerryghionisFull conversation on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/y8kTZqgiaPMSupport the Show.Become a supporter of The Studio Takeover podcast here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2284439/supporters/new

Where is the value in your portrait work with Andrew Funderburg

Send us a Text Message. Is the value of our work as portrait artists in the medium of print? In the digital file(s)? Or in HOW your clients FEEL when they experience that work day in and day out in their homes and where they choose to display that work? Now, we compound that experience in the materials we use to source and produce that artwork however, Andrew is the head of Fundy, and if you are at all familiar with Fundy you know how powerful the program is in time savings and streamlining your customer's experience with you.A lifelong entrepreneur, he knows the value of every hour entrepreneurs spend in running their businesses and portrait businesses are no exception. So many of us run head first into business ownership and are even excited to do so. But there comes a time where we have to start prioritizing where we invest that energy so that we can maintain our growth as artists and as CEO's.And once that comes into play you start to realize what you're missing out on; picking your kids up from school, paying for college tuition, going on a walk even! How is your business supporting the life you want to be living?Fundy is powerful! Since this episode was recorded I have personally dived deeper into the Fundy programs and used their software with four different clients. Now, in full transparency, I did fumble through the first image selection appointment however once I got the hang of things, not only does having examples of my Graphi artwork on the wall in front of my clients and then three different wall art mock ups with the client's images - It is an obvious choice. Send us a Text Message. An introvert's introvert, Ivana has learned that she COULD make excuses about not doing what's required for a portrait business owner to become successful:Im an introvertIts scaryIt cant happen in my townand the list goes on...But she also knows that SHE is responsible for the growth and success she's after for her business & she doesn't let fear stop her. She shows up for networking, is consistent in her organic efforts on social, and employs paid advertising for her campaigns.Ivana had a "successful" business my the overall metrics of her business in 22 and 23. She was booked three months in advance, she was reaching her 6 figure goals...but there was more at play. The HOW of finding that success.Toward the end of 23 she was realizing how burnt out she was as it was deeply affecting her mental and physical health. Exhausted, sick, tired...and she knew something had to change.Ivana came to the US in 2017 from Bosnia and officially started her business in 2019. An Artist, as many of us are she thought her focus needed to be in the creative aspects of her work; refining her camera tech and Photoshop skills which garnered the success and recognition from Adobe. However, as many of us do we expect that the creative recognition will open the flood gates of paid clients. And while that to some extent can be true, if you don't have a sustainable business model to support those leads then you very quickly realize that you find overwhelm & even resentment. Her next step was in building out a business model that by 2023 where she was working 80 hr weeks and was no longer able to tap into the love her clients deserved.Another beautiful insight Ivana brings is in comparison: of others work, of others businesses and instead of looking at those successes others are experiencing as evidence that she couldn't achieve the success she desired, she chose to see those successes as evidence that she COULD. It's proof of concept that it can and will work. Now after working with Cat for 6 months in 2024 she has made more money and is working with half the clients than in 2023. She reached her highest revenue month ever in April of 2024, moved from NC to Chicago, IL and booked out through July in May AND took a month off to visit her home in Bosnia.Relocating your portrait business doesn't immediately mean a wild dip in revenue. You CAN establish yourself before you move a single box. Ivana is proof of that and as her Mentor, I am so very proud of her tenacity and love for her work and her Art.Be a part of Ivana's project FACES in Chicago! This was an aha for her so she created The Moxie Project in her studio to lean into helping her clients discover their truest and most confident self.It didn't come without growth within herself though. She uncovered that her own negative self talk affected how she was able to feel in her own life and now she shares that growth with everyone she photographs.Bex had been photographed by Cat in 2022 and at the time thought the experience was her "arrival" to her next level and then following the experience uncovered that there were some aspects of her growth she hadn't yet faced. Now she is able to look on those portraits from a space of love to realize that it was a milestone in her growth as not only a business owner, artist, and a human being. Her experience in being photographed has allowed her to realize how she shows up in the world, her own personal forgiveness, and in appreciating her own authenticity and being able to define what that looks like for her in her life and this allows her to create magical portrait experiences for her own clients so they too can accept where they are, define who they are becoming and have tangible proof that this version of themselves does exist.Find Bex here:Website: https://bexwood.com/Instagram: @bexwoodphoto Are you a Photographer? Following that, he received his military orders and brought his camera into the field, and realized he had a very distinct and unique opportunity in photo journalism with the Marine Corp.In 2017 he was listening to a photography business podcast and found Peter Hurley's Headshot Crew and the game changed. Since then, Noel has become a mentor in The HSC space and loves being able to judge the weekly headshot contest to help other photographers evolve their work. A firm believer in "you learn the most by teaching" and is regularly reminded of refining the fundamentals to be effective in your work.Noel has been building out a new space but is also discovering that his brand is commanding attention and in this next level finding the "new level new devil" challenges of growth and even though he doesn't love looking at the "numbers" but in being a provider for his family and business owner that he HAS to pay attention to the metrics that communicate the health OF the business.During the pandemic he was faced with the decision of whether or not the photo business would survive. Send us a Text Message."I never thought of my work as a business. I was a freelancer..."For generations creatives were taught that you had a side gig to pay you so you can make the work you wanted to make on the side, and that simply isnt the case any longer. From educators like Cat Ford-Coates and Sue Bryce portrait photographers are learning that their work IS valuable.Jana was a street photographer for years and then in 2014 decided she wanted to learn more about studio lighting and dove into a personal project with the transgender community that, by all standards became wildly successful and her work toured for six years. It was in this space that she discovered the transformational power of portrait and never looked back. A lifelong student discovering again and again that part of the creative process is yes, about what you want to create but also what you want to share with the world. Uncovering the things in the world she didn't understand and finding answers through her camera was the way she chose to connect more deeply with the world around her.Her father greatly influenced her perspective through his writing. As a famous writer his philosophy was to create work that you want to create and shaping that work to have meaning for others, and it is this philosophy that has shaped how Jana has shown up in her multiple iterations as a professor, as a street photographer, a documentary photographer, and a portrait photographer.Jana moved on from her ten year chapter in representing the transgender community through her portrait project and was inspired to photograph women and at an exhibition, one of her clients in attendance saw her image hanging, 30x40", and began to cry. Confused, Jana asked why and if she was ok and the client's response through her tears was "You captured the woman I've always wanted to be seen as, but didn't think the world saw..." and Jana rediscovered how her work had value and impact for others, again.Photography is powerful both personally and professionally and is no longer relegated to photojournalism but for everyday people's lives. To find Jana: website: https://www.janamarcus.com/instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jmarcusphoto/Full conversation on YT here: https://youtu.be/JDHae99v4DM Are you a Photographer? Being a creative entrepreneur has its challenges and we could say those challenges are limited to the growth of our style, or improving technically, or in effective marketing even, but that isn't the all and the everything. Sometimes we have to make tough decisions too. Decisions like "do I get a job while I build this foundation?" or "do I take on THIS demographic so I can create what my heart loves too?"Josh Beaton is my guest on this week's podcast and I think you will find his approach refreshing. For one, hes a funny dude but also, hes very connected to the work he loves to create and isn't interested in taking on work simply for the sake of it. Full disclosure, Mitzi and Cat cuss like sailors. Buckle Up.In the name of "streamlining" you realize you've created a house of cards versus a stable business and how your desire to be challenged in what you create and how you create that thing you create and what it teaches us as people, and as business owners, and artists. So Mitzi and Cat go down the rabbit hole of appreciating and understanding where your natural strengths lie (through Clifton Strengths and Wealth Dynamics) so that you CAN focus on what you ARE great at and employ support in areas where you NEED it and be kinder to yourself in the process. It is understanding where your HEART is in alignment with your business that you can find the growth you are looking for and Mitzi discovered that when she was in avoidance; of her life, of what she WANTED FOR her life and her art was exactly when life (in doing what life does) forced her to really dig deep about what she truly is here to do and create her life into being.Following a tear of her achilles and then weeks later being diagnosed with breast cancer life had propelled her into a reevaluation none of us ever hopes to be confronted with, especially as a new parent. And as Mitzi points out, you have to work through the traumatizing thing before you can reflect ON the lessons the trauma teaches us, she admitted to herself that the status quo of her success in business wasn't fulfilling in the way she had created it to be. It was time to shift and there was no going back.Stripping away all of the fluff or as we coined "fucking shit up" is required to innovate, grow, and connect more deeply with ourselves and those we serve.Find Mitzi Here:Website: www.mitzistarkweather.comInstagram: @mitzistarkweather / @rawportraitscourseEnroll in Tei Hofford's Clifton Strengths coaching here:https://terihofford.com/clifton-strengths-coachingFull conversation on YouTube here:https://youtu.be/jLMN-qQUonI Are you a Photographer? Teri discovered that she had to learn to address her own nervous system response and care for herself in order to tame the burnout, which then allowed her to follow the breadcrumbs to evolve her business from only being a photographer to a body image expert and world class educator who is changing the narrative of patriarchal beauty standards worldwide through body acceptance and celebration.Teri's  approach to shifting that narrative isn't quite what you might expect. She isn't only changing that narrative through how she photographs people, but in teaching photographers how they can address their own limiting beliefs, dig deeper into their own purpose as photographers, and in how they see themselves because it is in that transformation that we as photographers can hold space for our clients, create art with those clients in a meaningful way which allows everyone to feel incredible in themselves exactly as they are in a world that has always said "You aren't worthy..."Find Teri here:instagram.com/terihoffordfacebook.com/terihoffordsheherwww.terihofford.cominstagram.com/bodyimagebootcampbibcgonewild.comJoin Teri Hofford and Kara Marie for their Fine Art Boudoir Workshop at the Graphi Castle in Italy this June:  https://www.graphistudio.com/en/graphistudio-workshop-2024/  Are you needing perspective or insight into your business?
