*FULL STORY SPOILERS THROUGHOUT* Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes, The City on Film, Lifted Bells) joins Andy and Ethan today to talk Tony Scott's extremely stylized and incredibly phosphorescent Man on Fire. We got to ask Bob all about his writing process, what it was like for Braid to come off hiatus in 2011, and how Best Friends Fest will be the greatest music festival of all time. Also, let us set the record straight once and for all: Bob Nanna, born and raised in Chicago, doesn't have hard opinions on deep dish or regular pizza. In his own words, he "just likes pizza". Inflammatory, we know, but we are here to report the facts. Intro Song: "The Welcoming" by 2 Mello off Atmospheric Horror Music, Vol 2 (check it out here!)

Note from Pepper: This episode is special for me. J Robbins is my favorite producer and I never in a million years thought I would get the chance to have a conversation with him. Yay! Robbins began his career as a bassist for Government Issue, and has also led five of his own bands: Jawbox, Rollkicker Laydown, Burning Airlines, Channels, and Office of Future Plans. He was a touring bassist for Scream and played bass on the debut 7" from Jack Potential, which was issued by DeSoto Records in 1993. More recently he played bass in Report Suspicious Activity with Vic Bondi, which released two albums on Alternative Tentacles Records. In 2011, Robbins, along with Kerosene 454's drummer and fellow Channels bandmate Darren Zentek, bassist Brooks Harlan, and guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, released an EP under the name Office of Future Plans. The band, who had been playing since 2009 and released an album on Dischord Records in November 2011, but as of October 2016, they are not together anymore. In May 31, 2019, J. Robbins released his first solo album, Un-Becoming. Robbins is also a successful producer and engineer for bands such as Ponytail, Clutch (and side project The Bakerton Group), Jets to Brazil, Hey Mercedes, Shiner, Mock Orange, The Pauses, The Life and Times, Miranda Sound, Time Spent Driving, Faraquet, The Dismemberment Plan, The Monorchid, The Promise Ring, Dwindle, Pilot to Gunner, Paint It Black, None More Black, Jawbreaker, Discount, Against Me!, Goodbye Soundscape, Modern Life is War, Stapleton, Murder By Death, mewithoutYou, Black Cross (hardcore), Lemuria, Caustic Casanova, The Sword, Debate (from Sao Paulo, Brazil), Coliseum, Hammer No More the Fingers, Small Brown Bike, Broadcaster, Noyo Mathis and Nakatomi Plaza. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius became CEO in 2019 but has been working for Mercedes since 1993 in almost every part of the company. During that period, Mercedes spent time getting a lot bigger; the company famously merged with Chrysler for a time, forming a giant called DaimlerChrysler. But, over the past few years, it's actually been getting much smaller and more focused. The Chrysler deal was undone and, just recently, Ola spun off the truck division into its own public company called Daimler Truck, leaving Mercedes-Benz to stand alone as a premium car brand. Car companies are either consolidating into giant conglomerates like Stellantis or shrinking and focusing like Mercedes. A lot of that is driven by the huge shift to electric vehicles and then, on top of that, to cars essentially becoming rolling computers. You'll hear Ola refer to cars as “digital products” a lot — and to Mercedes itself as a tech company. (Actually, he says it's a luxury and tech company.) Mercedes now has two new EVs, the EQS and the EQE, both of which have massive infotainment screens running Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system, which even has its own voice assistant called Hey Mercedes. I had to ask Ola about Apple's recent announcement that the next version of CarPlay would be able to take over every display in the car, including the instrument cluster. Apple showed a Mercedes logo on a slide during that presentation — so, is Ola ready to hand over his UI to Cupertino? Let's find out. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz. Here we go. Everynight Fire Works is the debut album by American rock band Hey Mercedes. Following the demise of Braid, most of the members formed Hey Mercedes, with guitarist Mark Dawursk joining in early 2000. The band released a self-titled EP through Polyvinyl Record Co., before signing to Vagrant Records at the end of the year. They recorded their debut with Burning Airlines member J. Robbins at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota in April 2001. Everynight Fire Works is an alternative rock, emo, indie rock and pop punk record that drew comparisons to Burning Airlines, Jets to Brazil, and Shudder to Think. Everynight Fire Works was announced for release shortly after recording, but was delayed a few times distribution troubles or legal issues that Vagrant was having. It was eventually released on October 23, where it was met with a mixed-to-positive reaction from music critics, with some commenting on the group's maturity and guitar work, as well as Nanna's vocals. Sometime after release, Dawursk left the band and was replaced with Michael Shumaker, and drummer Damon Atkinson spent some time touring with Saves the Day. The band went on two stints of the US, one as part of the Vagrant America arena tour, with other acts on the label. In all, Everynight Fire Works was promoted with over 200 shows.
The group was asked the question, “What are you listening to right now, or what is the last album you listened to?” The answers showed a wide range of styles and genres. Today, we give you a small sampling. Hope you enjoy! Songs played:Soul Coughing – “Super Bon Bon” from Irresistible Bliss (1996)Cornelius – “Star Fruit Surf Rider” from Fantasma (1997)Hey Mercedes – “The Switch” from Loses Control (2003)Fairport Convention – “Tale In Hard Time” from What We Did On Our Holidays (1969)Kraftwerk – “Kometenmelodie 2" from Autobahn (1974)Louis Prince – “Half Acres" from Thirteen (2020)The Jimi Hendrix Experience – “Remember” from Are You Experienced (1967) Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/SchizoMusic)

Chicago's Kali Masi have been churning out some killer punk rock jams for nearly a decade now. The four-piece outfit have recently released their new album [laughs] via Take This To Heart Records, their first full length album in 4 years. Drawing easy comparisons to other Mid-West bands like Hey Mercedes, Alkaline Trio or Lawrence Arms, Kali Masi's music is layered with rich, melodic instrumentation, vocal hooks for days, and a pop-sensibility that still stays true to their punk roots. Sam and John stopped by the show to talk about the history of the band and the origins of the band name, what they've been doing during the pandemic, and to discuss some of their favorite bands coming out of the Chicago area. We spend some time discussing what touring post-pandemic may looking like, and they give me their 5 "trapped on a desert island" albums. My Personal Mixtape: Episode 8 - Bob Nanna I sat down for a conversation with Bob Nanna about 10 of his favorite "Deep Cuts' from his career. Bob is a prolific songwriter and has had many different projects over the years, so the list is pretty epic. We do it in reverse chronological order, which made for a fun chat. If you enjoyed the songs featured in this episode, you can find the Spotify playlist under Bob Nanna - My Personal Mixtape.
Listeners all over the world know Bob Nanna as the voice of Braid (one of the most influential emo bands of all time), as well as celebrated projects like Hey Mercedes and The City On Film. Long before he was making a name for himself with those bands, Nanna was a drummer who was keeping time for lesser-known suburban Chicago outfits like Slaphappy and Friction. Recently, My First Band host Tyler Maas spoke to Nanna about the unconventional recording process for his new solo album, Celebration States, and how he's both staying creative and keeping busy in isolation. Over the course of the roughly 80-minute conversation, the emo icon also talked about his pre-Braid projects, the highs and lows of Braid and Hey Mercedes, the wealth of other musical endeavors that came after those seminal bands, and the process of building a network of musicians for his Downwrite custom song business. Along the way, Maas also accidentally referred to Michael Cassady as "Neil Cassady" and Nanna talked about playing a recent socially distant backyard show to an audience of seven people. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), Friction ("Squelch") and Bob Nanna ("Mr. Albatross").

The infotainment-system MBUX wants to be on equal terms with other voice assistants like Siri, Google or Alexa. Which skills can we therefore expect from MBUX in the near future? Georges Massing, Vice President Digital Vehicle & Mobility tells us in the second episode of his interview with HeadLights. He reveals how Mercedes customers use MBUX most commonly and explains, why he’s a fan of cooperations with competitors on a software level.
MBUX can check the stock market, order a chauffeur to drive your car back home or tell you whether your favorite team won or lost that important match today. Admittedly: What MBUX can do for you, still depends on the country the system is used. But since its world premiere, the infotainment system has been praised for its voice control management, which doesn’t even require special commands. The development of the infotainment system MBUX and its integration into our vehicles is one of the responsibilities of Georges Massing, Vice President Digital Vehicle & Mobility at Mercedes-Benz AG. In this episode of HeadLights he speaks about the inspirational moment he had when talking to his five-year-old son about voice control, he reveals which features of MBUX he likes the most and he explains, why we decided to launch the system first in our new A-Class.
After the dissolution of Chicago-based Braid, Bob Nanna and Todd Bell took their post-hardcore emo sound and added some melody and pop to it. The result was Hey Mercedes - but the change in sound was likely thanks to Vagrant records. When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. Speaking about Jeff in this episode is Bob Nanna from Braid, Hey Mercedes, and many other bands, plus Bernie McGinn who put out the full length, “The Radio Goodnight” and an EP. They speak eloquently about Jeff and you’ll find out more about music but also his humor. If this perks your interest, I’ve linked a bunch of articles and content on Washed Up Emo to continue your dive into Jeff’s music. You can also go to JeffHanson.net. This is by no means a complete history and I urge you to dig into Jeff and his life to learn more. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
This week's guest is Bob Nanna from Braid and Hey Mercedes and we're talking about, arguably, one of the most beautiful cities in the world... Paris. Bob's vegetarian, so we'll get to know some of his favorite veggie forward and vegan spots in Paris. We also get an idea of what it was like touring through the mid-90's and early 2000's. A time when your food in each city was only as good as your local friend or venue staff recommendations. If you have any food recommendations or stories about playing Paris that you'd like to share, send them over to foodontourguys@gmail.com and I'll share those at the end of upcoming episodes. Find us on instagram @food.ontour or visit our website, foodontourpod.com, for a full list of restaurants mentioned in each episode.
Compared to many other musicians, Todd Bell got kind of a late start. He more than made up for it, however, when the second band he ever played in would end up becoming one of the most influential emo bands of all time. After first picking up a bass in his early 20s and playing a few house shows in a band he formed with a skating buddy, Bell wound up in the rhythm section of a little project known as Braid. The rest was history. Despite being under quarantine, Bell has been keeping extremely busy with parenting duties and his day job as a special education teacher. Still, he found enough time recently to get on a video chat with My First Band host Tyler Maas and — despite battling a few technological issues — told him about finding a group of like-minded friends as a teenager in the Illinois college town of Champaign, his decision to take up bass guitar, the unlikely start (and most memorable experiences) of Braid, his time in Hey Mercedes, Braid's second stint, and what prompted his move to Milwaukee more than 20 years ago. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), Hey Mercedes ("Police Police Me"), and Braid ("Milwaukee Sky Rocket").
In episode 5, the whole gang stops by to talk about our favorite venues we've ever played, what we should reinvest the border wall money into, and whether or not my wife pooped on the floor. We then get the chance to talk to Bob Nanna from Braid and Hey Mercedes about his most embarrassing childhood moment, his favorite band that he toured with, and his involvement with Downwrite. After a long break, it's the big 4-0 today, and I'm thrilled to have music industry guru Jim McDermott joining us for our fortieth episode! From Warner to PolyGram to Island to Universal to Sony, Jim's three decades of experience in marketing have seen him at the helm of album campaigns for the likes of David Bowie, New Order, Sheryl Crow, U2, Depeche Mode, Guns N' Roses, The Replacements and more. In July of this year, he began his own podcast -- How To Fix The Music Business -- where he chats with insiders and musicians to find out how the industry can survive and still fuel artists both creatively and financially. In this chat, Jim drops lots of great industry knowledge and we also discuss how ditching his vinyl in the CD era actually led to his career in music, his early and current vinyl obsessions, a funny backstage meeting with The Cure's Robert Smith and why sending fake dog poop in the mail can sometimes work wonders! Hey, folks! There was no episode of Random Old Records in October, truly sorry for the delay! I needed a little extra time to craft the perfect selection of tracks for this one. Episode #56 is a special 5-10-15-20 edition, which opens up the memory banks and goes back in time to the years 2011, 2006, 2001, and 1996. Looking back, none of these years were particularly "great" for music, but each one definitely has their fair share of jams!In 2011, Thee Oh Sees kicked off a remarkable run of albums with the acid-folk creep of Castlemania. Meanwhile, The Beets delivered their excellent final LP Let The Poison Out before leader Juan Wauters started a solo career. A decade prior, Jersey post-hardcore rockers Rye Coalition unleashed THEIR final LP Curses, which had been in major label limbo for two years prior to release, and further south, Texas punks the Marked Men released their classic Fix My Brain.2001 was the prime year for emo and post-hardcore, at least in my circle of friends at the time. Bands like Hey Mercedes and Hot Water Music were crafting anthems, while the remnants of Cap'n Jazz were crafting avant-fusion rock with Owls. Finally, the hour wraps up with a bunch of Britpop and indie rock from 1996, when both genres were in slight decline but still pumping out plenty of jams. In between the tracks are some vintage news stories to ramp up the nostalgia and complete the time capsule. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I had putting it together. As always, thanks for listening, and stay tuned for episode #57 next month!Random Old Records Podcast #56Released 11/07/16DOWNLOAD HERE1. If you heard my recent chat with Rocky Votolato, you may remember us discussing a new 7" he appears on as part of the Live On Lacquer series, where artists cover each other's work and do so without any overdubs or tweaking -- all sounds are directly recorded onto acetate as a lathe machine cuts the record's information in real time, before it's sent off for duplication. Today, Levi Seitz from Live On Lacquer as well as Black Belt Mastering joins me to discuss the 7" series, his iconic Scully Lathe, the art of mastering for both digital and vinyl releases, whether there's truth to some of vinyl's biggest buzz words and much more! When Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato began releasing solo albums in the late 90's -- at a time when vinyl was all but out of the mainstream consciousness -- it was important to him that every single release of his was pressed to wax. Fast forward to 2016, and he's now celebrating the 10th anniversary reissue of "Makers" on Barsuk Records -- his favorite in his discography, and viewed as his crowning achievement among his fans -- with a tour fronting a talented band that gives new thrilling dynamics to that album's intimacy. Downstairs at Chicago's famed Schubas Tavern, Rocky and I chat about his DIY aesthetic, the idea that music isn't truly real until it's on vinyl, sharing records with his brother and Waxing bandmate Cody (who later went on to form The Blood Brothers), motorcycle movie soundtracks, raising his kids on Neutral Milk Hotel, recording a recent seven-inch live directly to lacquer, recording stories with Chris Walla and Casey Foubert, bouncing around between some of indie-rock's most prolific labels, the differences between himself now and the Rocky who wrote and recorded "Makers," and much more! Vinyl For A Cause is a Chicago-based record label based around music being a driver for charitable good. Every release features two bands covering each other on both sides of a limited-edition seven-inch record that'll never be repressed. Each band also chooses a charity of their choice, where a large portion of the record sales are donated to. Joining the show today are VFAC co-founder Adam Victorn and singer-songwriter Jesse W. Johnson, who appears on one of the VFAC's first releases -- a split 45 between himself and Coed Pagent -- expected to be out later this year. On this episode, we discuss the inspiration for Vinyl For A Cause and their partnership with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, both Jesse and Adam's experiences getting their own records pressed for the first time, where they think the vinyl industry is headed, the age of crowdfunding and much more. Plus, Jesse plays "Stand to Smile" -- a new, unreleased song -- live and acoustic! Visit vinylforacause.com and jessewjohnson.com for more info on our guests this week. Through his various jobs in music marketing, Tom Mullen has always been and still is a fan, first and foremost. Making a website for one of his favorite groups led to a storied career with punk/indie labels like Equal Vision and Vagrant to larger companies like EMI and Legacy Recordings/Sony Music, where he is currently Senior Director of Creative and Marketing Partnerships. He's had the pleasure of working directly with icons such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Cyndi Lauper and more, though indie-rock fans know him well as the founder and voice behind the Washed Up Emo podcast and IsThisBandEmo.com, a search engine devoted to the seemingly ageless debate about where bands stand within the genre. Today, we discuss the venerable emo museum of videos, flyers and other memorabilia that fans and bands send his way, some out-of-print seven-inches he was recently gifted, why MTV called him about rare Nirvana video footage he unearthed and JeffBuckleyCollection.com -- worked on directly with the Buckley family -- which allows fans to digitally browse through the late singer/songwriter's record collection. Follow @WashedUpEmo and @tommullen on social media, and subscribe to the Washed Up Emo podcast on iTunes! PLUS: Learn how to win a rare split seven-inch from two Washed Up Emo favorites: Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes, Lifted Bells) and Matt Pryor (Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams); Only 160 exist of this screen-printed gem, pressed on yellow vinyl! Damon Atkinson is perhaps best known for his drumming with Braid and Hey Mercedes. His cleverly composed, crisply executed beats are essential elements of those bands' formulas. He tells Joe about becoming fascinated with drumming while still a toddler; his punk rock roots in the northern suburbs of Milwaukee; how his DIY background served him well in the world of music business; and how--at age nineteen--he balanced fatherhood and musical ambition.
On this episode, Greg and Scott sit down with Bob Nanna, singer and guitarist of Braid and Hey Mercedes. They talk about the Hey Mercedes reunion and record reissue, Happy Gilmore, and how Bob got autotuned this one time.
Fresh off our interview with bassist Todd Bell of Braid and Hey Mercedes, I sat down in Nashville with the other half of that incredible rhythm section, drummer Damon Atkinson! We discuss the Hey Mercedes reunion this year starting July 8th and upcoming re-release of their debut album "Everynight Fire Works," setting up his own drum kit and tour rig in his mom's basement at an early age, doing D.I.Y. cassette duplication and 7" sleeve assembly in early bands like Altered States and Figurehead, how drum-teching for groups such as Thrice and Senses Fail parlayed into a full-on career in tour management, why Shirley Manson from Garbage gave him her old Palm Pilot, and his connection to Nicoletto's Pasta Co., a new fast-casual Italian restaurant in Nashville! Follow @heymercedes2016 on Twitter and Instagram for all their updates this year, and you can also follow Damon at twitter.com/damonetm and instagram.com/damonatkinson. PLUS I announce our Black Sabbath vinyl winner, and chat briefly with return guest Rob Clark, to get a first-hand account of the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Back in 2014, I interviewed Braid and Hey Mercedes bassist Todd Bell about his record collection for a written piece on Modern-Vinyl.com, which led to us digging together on Record Store Day 2015. So when I began this podcast, I knew Todd would be a more-than-willing guest to discuss his vast stockpile of over 2,500 albums. In this episode, we chat about the benefits of Japanese pressings, the art of the mix CD (and trading said CD's with his pals in Jawbox and Texas Is The Reason), the good ol' days of sending cash and coins through the mail for records, Braid's love affair with off-kilter time signatures, still finding time to skateboard as a busy dad (with fellow musician and busy dad Dan Didier of Maritime/The Promise Ring), inheriting his father's classic Sansui receiver (purchased while stationed in Okinawa during his time in the Air Force) and much more! We also get some EXCLUSIVE, not-yet-announced Braid repress news direct from Todd, and you can enter our Braid vinyl prize pack giveaway! Braid. Hey Mercedes. Two of Trav's favorite bands. The cool thing is you can talk to one Bob Nanna and cover both. First we have a few records to talk about. Then Stephen tells one of those stories that reminds you that it could be embarrassing to go "commando". Bob Nanna tells us about the space between the end of Braid and the beginning of Hey Mercedes and how it went down in Hawaii. Hear about how Hey Mercedes met their tour manager Chris on the Vagrant tour. Bob Nanna was nice enough to open up about a cancer scare, yet how he somehow found the peace to not let it be a scare...plus he got a hat out of it so that's cool. Cancer sucks. We are all getting older every day and there comes a time where we have to make smarter decisions about our health. Drink more water, folks. He reminds us that when you go see a band they didn't just come from their tour bus fully rested...sometimes they didn't even sleep the night before. Remember that. Bob is involved in something pretty special called Downwrite, where you can hire a songwriter to write a customized song just for you. It's a really neat, intimate approach and I recommend the site. Just scroll around and see who's involved. Bob is covering his top 100 songs (yeah...) all the way up to his favorite song "Chesterfield King" by Jawbreaker. Thanks for listening. We love you.
