San Francisco Giants right-handed ace Juan Marichal was among the elite pitchers during the "The Golden Age Of Pitching" of the 1960's, but he always seemed to live in the shadows of Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson during that era. He was the winningest pitcher of the decade, and his 2.57 era during that span is third best behind only Koufax and his 2.37 and closer Hoyt Wilhelm's 2.16. This week we will cover the baseball journey of the kid who from humble beginnings as the poor farmer's kid from the Dominican Republic, would change his stars, becoming the first Dominican superstar player and a baseball immortal, changing the face of baseball forever. #JuanMarichal #SanFranciscoGiants #RamfisTrujillo #SandyKoufax #BobGibson #JohnnyRoseboro #LagunaVerde #JesusAlou #MattyAlou #FelipeAlou #AlmaCaravajal #AndyGilbert #AlDark #WarrenSpahn #BostonRedSox #LosAngelesDodgers

Yankees, Dodgers, World Series. Those words evoke memories of Major League baseball becoming the national pastime generations ago. Both franchises fielded some of the absolute giants in the history of the sport. Babe and Jackie. Mantle and Koufax. And today Ohtani and Judge. So as the baseball world gets ready for game one of the Fall Classic, we turn to Claire Smith, a legend in her own right, to tell us about the legacies of these two teams. And to put into perspective the passing of another legend, Fernando Valenzuela, who played a part himself in this historic rivalry. Learn more about your ad choices. Top 5 Reasons This World Series is Special | BrandStack Podcast - 003The transcript below was provided by Substack and cleaned up by ChatGPT.Hey Gang,The World Series is about to get started, and I wanted to share an interview I did with a legendary player who wore both the Yankees and Dodgers uniforms and pitched in the last three World Series between the two teams. Does anybody know who that player might be? We'll come back to that in just a few minutes. Why The 2024 World Series is SpecialBut first, I wanted to share why I think this World Series is so special and why there's so much interest in the series between the Yankees and the Dodgers.Massive Star PowerNumber one, it's got massive star power. The MVPs and best players in each league are in it: Aaron Judge of the Yankees, Shohei Otani of the Dodgers. You've also got other stars like Juan Soto and Garrett Cole on the Yankees' side, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman on the Dodgers' side, although Freeman isn't in top form right now. These are among the biggest names in the game. It's going to be exciting to have all these stars under the bright lights. Two Best Teams in BaseballNumber two, it's the two best teams in baseball. The Dodgers and Yankees both finished with the best record in their league during the regular season. Nothing that happened during the playoffs changed the perception that these are the two best teams, and we've got a matchup of the best of the best.Broadway vs HollywoodNumber three, it's New York and L.A. You're talking about the two biggest media markets in the U.S., so the hype and the media attention is going to be massive, and the TV audience should be much bigger than usual for a World Series.Storied RivalryNumber four, it's a storied rivalry. Great tradition and history, going back to when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn and the two teams would meet in the Subway Series, the World Series, as it was called when two New York teams were playing. You're talking, again, about some of the greatest players in the history of the game: Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax—although Koufax was more so in the 60s after the move to L.A. There's only been one perfect game in the entire World Series, and that was Don Larsen of the Yankees beating the Dodgers in Game 6 of the 1956 World Series. There's also the famous play where Jackie Robinson steals home off Whitey Ford, and Yogi swore till his final day that he got the tag down and got Robinson out, but he argued to no avail, and Jackie Robinson was safe. That was the 1955 series, the one World Series between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, in which the Dodgers broke through and won the series. I believe they were 6-1, the Yankees against the Dodgers in the World Series when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn. The Yankees lead 8-3 overall between the two teams. It's Been 43 YearsAnd number five, this doesn't happen very often. These two teams haven't met in the World Series in 43 years. The last three times they met—'77, '78, and '81—the Yankees won in '77 and '78, and the Dodgers won in '81. If memory serves me correctly, in both '78 and '81, the team that won the first two games ended up losing the series and losing the next four straight games. Of course, the biggest memory, the greatest memory most people have who were around for those series, was Game 6, 1977, when Reggie Jackson hit three home runs off of three different Dodgers pitchers. Again, the Yankees won in '77 and '78. The Dodgers bounced back and won in 1981.The InterviewSo I want to bring up an interview that I did. I did this back in 2017 in October, just before the World Series back then. It was with a player who...
Known in Japan as "Yaku Shonen", translated in English, as "Baseball Boy", Shohei Ohtani, grew up as a kid that lives, eats, and breathes baseball. Some would argue the 2-way player isn't Babe Ruth, while others believe he's better. Willie, Ted, Koufax, Bonds, Hank, and Mantle, all have the credentials. So, we ask our friends and veteran MLB writers Tyler Kepner and Dom Amore to explain history. Then, our knowledgeable fans share their own thoughts. Who is the greatest baseball player ever and why?
DV takes your calls and talks to Jose Mota after the Dodgers fall to the Cubs, 10-4. Walker Buehler talks to the media after another rough start. September 10, 1960 - Mickey Mantle unloads a cannon shot clearing the RF roof in Detroit and landing in Brooks Lumber Yard across Trumbull Avenue. In June, 1985, Mantle's blow was retroactively measured at 643 feet, and was listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the longest Home Run in History. New research by National Baseball Hall of Fame, overturned that estimate and instead gives the mark to a 575 ft blast by Babe Ruth hit on July 18, 1921, also in Detroit.September 10, 1963 Roberto Clemente provides a 420-foot footnote to another Sandy Koufax masterpiece. Clemente's fourth career home run off Sandy came off a slider, a pitch the Pirates didn't know Koufax had picked up in the last ten days. Koufax shelved the slider for the rest of the night. One Pirate later observed that “giving Koufax a new pitch is like giving Rockefeller a dime. Neither of them really needs it."September 10, 1999, The Red Sox trip the Yankees, 3 - 1, as Pedro Martinez hurls an impressive one-hitter for his 21st victory of the year. Martinez strikes out 17 batters, the most Yankees ever fanned in a single game.September 10, 1918 - Players on both sides of the World Series threaten to strike unless they are guaranteed $2,500 to the winners and $1,000 each for the losers. They back off, however, when told they will appear greedy while their countrymen are fighting a war.

Welcome to the "2024 trade deadline" episode of the Dodger Dugout Dopes. What grade to we give Andrew Friedman? What's going on with Gavin Lux? With Austin Barnes? And where will the Dodgers wind up at the end of 2024? Oh---we have a new co-host who wasn't able to join us today---Shoeshine Guy. He's got an inside connection to Andrew Friedman.
Jim Kaat pitched in the big leagues for 25 seasons, debuting in 1959 and hanging 'em up in 1983. He holds the distinction of the longest time in between World Series appearances first appearing in the Fall Classic in 1965 when his Twins took on the Dodgers with Kaat matching up 3 times against Sandy Koufax. 17 years later, as a member of the Cardinals, Jim was on the winning side of things as St. Louis defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in 1982. The 24 years it took for Kaat to finally win a championship is a record for all professional team sports and a testament to his longevity and determination... That longevity and determination along with 283 wins helped Jim get inducted into the Hall of Fame. That and one baseball glove that he used for most of his career. That's right, Jim played for 25 years in the Major Leagues and won 16 Gold Gloves all with the same piece of leather. If it works, it works. And for Kaat, it worked. And when his playing days were over... he found new work... as an Emmy-Award winning baseball analyst... a job he held for close to 40 years! What was it like to go up against Koufax in his prime? Why are pitchers being injured at such an alarming rate? Why is his friend of 60+ years, Tommy John, not in Cooperstown and what was it like to finally become a World Series champion in his 24th season in the Big Leagues? Kaat played for 1/4 of a century and he has the stories to prove it. An interesting chat with an interesting man on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. On February 28, 1966 — Refusing to report to spring training, Los Angeles Dodger pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale begin their joint holdout, asking for a $1 million, three-year contract, to be divided equally between them. The deal, equivalent to an annual salary of $167,000 for each hurler, will make them the best-paid players in baseball, easily surpassing Willie Mays' $125,000 yearly paycheck with the Giants. Although the deal didn't happen, On March 30, Drysdale and Koufax will end their holdouts, with each signing one-year contracts worth under $150,000. Koufax, however, will become the highest-paid player in the game. We've got a handful of Canadian victories at U.S. tracks – Bill Tharrenos sending out a pair of winners on the same day at Gulfstream, Prince of Wales Champion Velocitor scoring and paying at the Fair Grounds, and CamHaven Farms sending out a winner that paid off at 27-1 at the Fair Grounds. We break down the Sovereign Award category for Outstanding Male Sprinter, trying to get Bob Tiller to compare Patches O'Houlihan to Pink Lloyd, but Tiller just won't go there. COSA President Bill O'Donnell explains the relatively new rule at Mohawk about breaking stride – it's not required very often, but it happened last Thursday night. Two-time NBA MVP Nicolai Jokic explains his love of harness racing, and when Koufax won a race at the Fair Grounds, we got curious about other horses named after sports stars.
It would be hard for any pitcher to stand out with Sandy Koufax as a teammate. Don Drysdale made it look easy. The left-handed Koufax and the right-handed Drysdale are arguably the best pairing in Los Angeles sporting history, no matter the sport. Drysdale's lifetime ERA of 2.95 curiously matches his World Series ERA on a 3-3 record. Putting aside the first and last years of his 14-year career, he had more than ten wins per season, with 49 shutouts to his name. And he's sixth on the all-time 'Home runs by pitchers' table. Drysdale spent his entire time in the majors with the Dodgers, first in Brooklyn and then in Los Angeles. He held the club record for wins (209) when he retired, but his retirement was a historic moment for another reason. He was the last of the Brooklyn Dodgers on LA's roster. For today's broadcast, we're early in the 1963 season. The Dodgers are 25-16 and welcome the New York Mets who have posted a 16-25 record. Drysdale is on the mound, and he's never going to leave it until the game is over, no matter what the Mets throw at him. Behind the microphone, there are the familiar voices of Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy on the New York Mets Radio Network. You can find the boxscore here. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN196305220.shtml This game was played on May 22, 1963. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

On June 30, 1972, journalist Clifford Evans interviewed President Richard Nixon in the White House for RKO General Broadcasting. This meeting was captured by recording devices in the Oval Office.Prior to this meeting, Evans had asked President Nixon to name his favorite baseball players during a June 22, 1972 press conference. President Nixon subsequently prepared a list and explanatory notes that were distributed via the Associated Press on June 30.In this conversation segment, President Nixon explains the process, methodology, and rationale for building his all-star teams, which included distinctions between pre-World War II and post-World War II rosters as well as American League and National League all-stars. He mentions working with son-in-law David Eisenhower at Camp David to generate the lists. President Nixon also discussed Lou Gehrig, whom he named “Most Courageous Baseball Player.” President Nixon references the movie, The Pride of the Yankees; Gehrig's farewell speech; and correspondence with Gehrig's widow, Eleanor. President Nixon also lauds Red Schoendienst's comeback after tuberculosis, recalling his own brother Harold's struggle with the disease. President Nixon then mentions Bill Mazeroski‘s grand slam performance for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1960 World Series, the crowd's response, and comparison to the teams of Pie Traynor‘s day. President Nixon also notes the 1951 “shot heard 'round the world” by New York Giants' Bobby Thomson against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Evans then ends the official RKO General broadcast. After the formal broadcast, the two men continue chatting, touching on New York Yankee Don Larsen‘s “perfect game” in the 1956 World Series as well as Los Angeles Dodger Sandy Koufax's breaking of the strike-out record in 1965. President Nixon ends by sharing the crowd's response at Dodger Stadium during Koufax's attempt for the record.Classic Broadcasts are old-time broadcasts that have been put together from various sources. And Greg Maddux wins his (2) in a row in 1993, and he will win the next two as well becoming the first pitcher to win 4 in a row. Maddux went 20-10 with a 2.36 ERA All but Law, Lonborg and Vuckovich will end up in Cooperstown https://tomsvintagebaseball.com/ On November 3, 1928 — Voters in Massachusetts approve Sunday baseball in Boston, provided that Braves Field is more than 1,000 feet from a church. This leaves Pennsylvania as the only state with no Sunday baseball in the major leagues. https://tomsvintagebaseball.com/ On November 3, 1987 — Oakland Athletics first baseman Mark McGwire, who hit 49 home runs with 118 RBI, wins the 1987 American League Rookie of the Year Award. McGwire is the second player to win that league's award unanimously. Carlton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox was the first to do it in 1972. McGwire set a rookie record with 49 homers and was the first rookie to lead the majors in homers since Al Rosen in 1950. On November 3, 1968 — Harry Carey, trying to cross the busy Kings Highway near the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis suffers two broken legs, a broken nose, and a dislocated shoulder when he is knocked 40 feet in the air after being struck by a car at 1:15 AM on an inclement Sunday morning. The popular Cardinals broadcaster, whose hospital room will become party central before he is discharged, will recover in time to be on the air for Opening Day. We have countless games he called, including the game where Richie Allen hit his famous blast over the Coke sign on May 29, 1965. Happy Birthday to Ken Holtzman, Born: November 3, 1945 in St. Louis, MO Holtzman was compared to Sandy Koufax early in his career. Both were left-handed, both were Jewish, and both had devastating curveballs. But that comparison was unfair to Holtzman, who went on to have an excellent career, winning 174 games in 15 seasons. The St. Louis native was involved in three big trades, one sending him from the Cubs to Oakland, one sending him from the A's to Baltimore, and the other shipping him from the Orioles to the Yankees. With the A's he joined Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter in a formidable starting rotation that led Oakland to three straight World Series titles. A crafty left-hander who preferred to induce a groundball rather than a strikeout, Holtzman won 17 or more games six times, and pitched two no-hitters. A clutch performer, Holtzman was 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight World Series starts. Trivia Answer as you probably already guessed it was one of the guys I mentioned above . . . . Brewers' reliever Rollie Fingers In 78 innings, he walked just 13 and flashed a 1.04 ERA, the lowest in history for a Cy Young Award winner. He saved 28 and won six, figuring in 55% of Milwaukee's victories in the strike-shortened season. Along with the Cy Young, he will also walk away with the MVP.
A regular season game with a pair of young Dodgers legends; Sandy Koufax, barely two years into his career, takes the mound, while up in the radio booth you have a 29-year-old Vin Scully calling the first three innings. You can find the box score here (Link). This game was played on June 4 1957. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message
Hey JCrew, we've got something extra we want to share with you. The Franchise is a new, eight-part series exploring how contemporary American Jewish culture imprinted itself onto sports and how sports imprinted itself onto Jewish traditions. Hosted by Meredith Shiner and produced by the team behind Unorthodox, the No. 1 Jewish podcast, The Franchise highlights the moments and the people—athletes, fans, stat geeks, journalists, and team owners—who are writing this uniquely, American Jewish story. The series begins in 1965 with Sandy Koufax, and traces the arc of American Jews and sports since then: from probing the so-called Koufax curse that befalls Jewish athletes who play on Yom Kippur to reevaluating the "Jewish Jordan" phenomenon and wondering why Jews love teams that always seem to lose, and much more. The Franchise premiers on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Many baseball fans still feel that Sandy Koufax is the GOAT. At least as pitchers go. Despite his relatively short career, Sandy had a sustained period of excellence (6 years) that is unrivaled. 382K's in one season is incredible to think about. But this in no way should sell Clayton Kershaw short. He has done it for a long time and at times been as good if not better than Sandy Koufax! The are a surprising amount of similarities in their career statistics. We talked about that and marveled at how terrific both of these pitchers were and are! First, Pedro talks about what inspired him to write the book, as well as a quick elevator speech on what the book covers (6:16). Next, Jim and Pedro cover Walker Buehler, the MLB lockout, rule changes that they believe could make baseball more enjoyable, and how much longer the Dodgers can continue to dominate the National League (18:01). Finally, they try to determine how many future HOFers currently make up the 2022 LA Dodgers roster and debate who the best pitcher in Dodgers history is (31:47).
