This week, we're scratching The Itch to rebel! AI art is trash, and you shouldn't use it. But if you put on a show as fun as this year's Pointfest, we'll forgive you. Mostly. The whole team made it to see 311 headline a lineup that also featured The Urge, Toadies, Finger Eleven, Sick Puppies, Alien Ant Farm, and our boys Oxymorrons and Tree One Four! Hear about the bands who impressed, The Point's second faux pas, and what legendary collaboration we finally got to see live! Plus, Aaron watches Josh Katz of Badflower try to burp, and KC and Dan celebrate Maynard James Keenan's 61st birthday by politely enduring Puscifer to get to Primus and A Perfect Circle! Enjoy. If you like what you hear, you can hear more of us every Sunday night broadcasting rock to the masses from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM. If you're not in the St. Louis area, you can stream the show from 891thewood.com, TuneIn, Radio.net, and OnlineRadioBox! Over the past decade, it's been the band Badflower to take a torch once carried by bands like My Chemical Romance and carry it into the realms of modern rock. Lead singer Josh Katz wears his heart on his sleeve with lyrics that resonate with anyone, no matter what they might be going through. That has never been more evident than on their latest single, "Paws," all about the possibility of losing his dog and best friend. That song, along with the previous single "Detroit," will be on Badflower's third full-length album, There Is No Place Like Home, due out on June 20th. Josh and I have had some deep conversations in the past, and has their manager reminded me, "you two gab like two old Grandmas," well, this conversation gets into some real-life stuff.

With influences from the 1960s all the way to the age of modern rock, the Austrian band GLAZED CURTAINS is keeping the spirit of rock alive. With a modern twist of the rock genre comparable to bands like Highly Suspect, Badflower and Kid Kapichi, the band really encaptures what the essence of guitar music is. Their music is not only for the old school rock listener but also for the people who are into overdriven guitar music and for those who like to have a little party. Let yourself be thrown into an experience of ordinary live energy and emotions caused by the bitter sides of life that ultimately make it worth while. GLAZED CURTAINS is not afraid of talking about honest feelings, anxiety and social issues that many people might be scared of admitting. A GLAZED CURTAINS concert is the perfect place for expressing feelings and showing love. It creates a safe atmosphere of celebrating life but also a bonding feeling of respect towards each other and welcoming every person just the way they are. Lots to talk about with Josh and Alex of Badflower, although Josh does most of the talking. LOL  They have a new single out called "Teacher Has A Gun" off their upcoming album, but they also told me about a song called "Detroit". The song isn't about the Motor City but was written here. They told me about that and how some Detroit voices will end up on the song.  We talk about Josh's fear of preforming live, his farmhouse outside of Nashville, a possible name for the upcoming record, and lots more.  Up next, it's P-Nut from 311. They also have a new album dropping later this year. He spoke to that and the process of making it. We talked about the 311 cruises, their recent Red Rocks gig that was simulcast, and tons more.  Their tour stops in the Detroit area at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheater on July 27th.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sleep Theory over Zoom video!Breakout four-piece Sleep Theory — vocalist Cullen Moore, guitarist Daniel Pruitt, bassist Paolo Vergara, and drummer Ben Pruitt — have shared the video for "Fallout" from their Paper Hearts EP, out now via the Epitaph Records. Get the EP, which has been streamed over 33 million times. The video features intense performance footage colliding with equally intense apocalyptic imagery, both of which fit the urgency of the song. It's a continuation of the end-of-the-world theme seen in the video for "Numb.""Creating 'Fallout' was a very personal for us, and seeing the music video come to life was surreal," the band states. "The emotion in the track is something we poured our hearts into, and we're thrilled that it resonates so powerfully with our fans. [Director] Orie [McGuiness] took our vision and elevated it beyond expectations. The way the music video captures the essence of the song is amazing. We truly couldn't have asked for a better visual representation for this song."Sleep Theory will hit the road on a 40-date trek with Beartooth, The Plot In You, and Invent Animate in Winter 2024. Since bursting onto the scene earlier this year, Sleep Theory have gone from strength to strength — and they show no signs of slowing down. The Paper Hearts EP features two buzzy singles — "Numb" and "Gone or Staying" — and the songs have established Sleep Theory as one of the most exciting and talked about artists of 2023. The band was praised by Loudwire for its ability to "adapt 2000s arena rock and nu-metal for the future with their anthemic metal-tinged sound that would please any fan of Linkin Park and their ilk. At once enthralling, emotional and disarming, SleepTheory's supercharged single 'Numb' is everything a radio rock fan could want. You'll be humming it for days after."With further press coverage from American Songwriter, Billboard, Celebrity Access, Punktastic, and beyond, as well as major nods from SiriusXM's Octane, Sleep Theory have had a huge 2023 and are clearly gearing up for an even bigger 2024.In just the past three months, Sleep Theory's monthly listeners have more than doubled, while their YouTube channel views have tripled. They are averaging 1.5 million streams per week, while "Numb" is sitting at No. 16 on the Active Rock chart and continues to climb. The track was No. 1 on on Sirius XM Octane, while the band was the first rock artist included in SiriusXM/Pandora's Artist Accelerator program and will be a part of the Next Wave Concert Series this month. They've toured with everyone from Shinedown to Set It Off, shared stages with I Prevail and Badflower, and have appeared at Louder Than Life, Rock Fest, ShipRockled, and Point Fest. They also count Jellyroll and Disturbed David Draiman as fans.We want to hear from you! Born of the stark beauty and bittersweet desolation of the high desert, California trio Heavy Gus blurs the lines between grungy garage band fare, hazy surf, and dreamy indie rock on their captivating full-length debut, Notions. Bristling with live-wire electricity, the collection is lean and spare, fueled by distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, and the performances are loose and organic to match, captured spontaneously in the moment with little room for overthinking or second-guessing. While all three bandmates come to Heavy Gus from very different worlds—Ulvang from The Lumineers, drummer Ryan Dobrowski from Blind Pilot, and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dorota Szuta from an unlikely combination of marine science and music—they fit together like puzzle pieces here, bound by the kind of love and trust that can only grow from years of deep kinship. The result is a record all about distance and connection from a band built on intimacy and personal chemistry, a mesmerizing debut that calls to mind everything from Meat Puppets and The Breeders to Yo La Tengo and Acetone in its artful balance of hope and fatalism, loneliness and desire, strength and vulnerability. Originally hailing from the rugged shores of Lake Superior, Sasha Mercedes writes image-provoking songs and delivers them with passion and conviction. Her powerful voice turns heads, as she beats on her guitar, brow furrowed and snarling! Mercedes has released five Americana solo albums, and though there will always be a soft spot in her heart for singer-songwriter stylings, Mercedes hasn't been tethered to any genre. She was the front-woman for Twin Cities-based rock band, Hot Pink Hangover, as well as the hook writer and fellow performer in Minneapolis hip hop trio, Channeling Grey. She has traveled the world making music and drawing inspiration out of every experience, which is evident in the lyrics of her brilliantly crafted compositions. She has shared the stage with TLC, Badflower, Dar Williams, Don Mclean, Tracy Bonham, Guy Davis, Pete Seeger, and others. She may seem hard on the outside, but Mercedes has always believed that rugged shores can polish even the roughest of stones. The guys from Badflower were nice enough to swing by the station on their way through to Canada this week. They took a few minutes to talk with me about what they have going on, as well as plug their appearance for Riff Fest on September 23rd.  Joey, Anthony, Alex and Josh spoke to getting lost on the way to the station. That's a tough trick in this day and age.  They talked about the tour they're currently on with Incubus and Paris Jackson. They told a story of what they did on a recent day off, which the Incubus guys took care of.  What about new music from the band? They were somewhat tight-lipped about what they're working on, or when it will see the light of day, but let's say they are recording material. They eluded to the fact that they've worked on it for a while. Josh said finishing the music is the hardest. "Getting a song to 75% is the easiest part. Maybe even 80%. Going from the 75, 80, 90 to 100 % is like a steep climb." He said it's weird to be judged when they drop new music.  As far as reading what the fans write on social media, Josh reads all of the comments, even though he said that might not be a great idea. "It sucks, I shouldn't." He did admit there's many positive comments as well.  They passed along some bus rules, things they don't like about touring, and more.  -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

This week, we're scratching The Itch for a cameo! On a lineup that included AWOLNATION, Badflower, and The Mysterines, somehow it was the artist not on the bill who made The Itch's night! Who's that, you ask? We wouldn't spoil it, except that the title already did. It was Hyro the Hero, who has spent all year moving rapidly up our list of favorites. But while we try to book interviews with all of these acts, check out this episode for a discussion about the difference between a headline set and an opening set, a Dan rant about NOT being old, and some observations on how to handle awkward moments on stage. Enjoy!
