Shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Tiffany Dunsdon – at the time CEO of JSE-listed Adapt IT – found herself having to fend off an unwanted takeover bid from Huge Group. Dunsdon did not feel the deal made much sense for Adapt IT – a fast-growing enterprise software services provider whose share price, like many others at the time, had been knocked lower by the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. The Huge Group approach was opportunistic, said Dunsdon. So, instead of entertaining the approach from Huge Group, she set about engineering a very different deal: one involving Canadian-listed Constellation Software: Constellation subsidiary Volaris Group would buy out Adapt IT and delist it from the JSE. Dunsdon, who was recently appointed as acquiring group leader at Omegro – a portfolio company within Volaris Group that houses Adapt IT – joins Duncan McLeod on the TechCentral Show for an update following the conclusion of the sale. In this episode of the TechCentral Show, Dunsdon also discusses: • Adapt IT's performance since its acquisition and delisting; • The Huge Group hostile approach and how that played out inside Adapt IT; • The timeline of events that led to the acquisition by Volaris Group; and • What's next for Adapt IT and Omegro. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we hear from Simon O Gorman, the owner of Adapt IT. Adapt IT have been running since 2001, but Simon only took over the business in 2021, after family circumstances put him in touch with the owner, Martin, which led to a conversation about the business being for sale. In fact, one of the aspects of the conversation is talking to Simon about the process of acquiring Adept IT, which only happened during 2021. It's a fascinating look at what goes into an acquisition, and some of the challenges that Simon faced. There's also quite a bit else that we covered in our conversation, including: - Ensuring that every client feels unique to your business. They should feel that they aren't treated like ‘just another client' - Why acquiring a business is not something that you should just decide to do - do your homework, and make sure you have a good network of people around you who have experience, especially lawyers! - How you go about pushing your team in their work - without pushing them too far, or not far enough! This is a great conversation, and it was good to hear Simon be so open and honest about acquiring Adept IT, and talk about some of the things that didn't quite go to plan, as well as the things that went well. It won't matter how long you've been a business owner, which industry you're in or where you are on your scale up journey - you'll definitely find some value in this episode. This week: getting personal with Ava Belle, Australian makeup artist of the year. From face painting at children's parties in Dubai, to glamour studios in London and nightclub body painting in Soho, Ava is a Byron-born Aussie creative star! With over 15 years' experience, Ava's makeup journey started when she was just a little girl watching her mum face paint at School fates. Are you interested in performing arts, bridal makeup, assisting, editorial shoots, fashion week and runways, creating headshots, glamour shoots, freelancing or working across diverse client portfolios? Then Ava's story is for you! KEY TAKEAWAYS: HUSTLE Did you know Ava booked her first gig before she'd even bought her first kit?! How's that for hustlin'. Ava's skills grew exponentially when she started assisting and travelling back and forth from Sydney to London, working on high profile jobs… including assisting Gudio*** and recreating his work. Attributing her success to constantly learning, being in the right (positive, educational) environments and putting herself out there, Ava encourages mua's to create opportunities, have persistence, leverage your networks and just show up ready to go. ***Guido is the creative director for Redken, globally, who is a LEGEND in our industry. He basically sets the trends and then the rest of the world follows. ADAPT It's been a hell-of-a-year, again. And for our industry, this couldn't ring truer! If the past two years have taught us anything, it's to be agile and savvy enough to adapt. Ava pivoted from bridal to content, recognising the need to ‘adapt' to the market around her. But also talked to us about an expensive lesson she learnt early in her career about trying to launch a product and business model in another country without doing her research. “It's been interesting times and I think that adapting has been the keyword over the last two years… My predominant business (pre-covid-19) was bridal, which had to take a backseat while I focused on producing lots of content during lockdowns and restrictions. Through this time I also won Australian Makeup Artist of the Year, it was a nice surprise and a lovely title to hold.” Ava Belle COLLAB You will have clients with different nationalities, different nuances, from all around the world. The important challenge is finding that common middle-ground, making your client on your seat feel comfortable and making sure you kick a$$ with your work. While some collaborations happen organically through your networks, or from your business listings online - there are important steps you can take to assist this process. 1. Build your portfolio, always be open to creating new content from your existing bookings or through new opportunities 2. Don't be afraid to have sponsored brand collaborations 3. Know your worth - make sure your costs are covered if you have to travel, stay the night, etc. 4. Be the best version of you. Show up, do the best work you possibly can and network with those around you. I've always been business minded and entrepreneurial… when I realised I could run my business on my phone from anywhere in the world, it just gave me this freedom to go travel, explore (and work). Sbu Shabalala's successor Tiffany Dunsdon joined the BizNews team on Adapt IT's results day. It's been a rollercoaster of a year for Adapt IT, with the software business being the subject of a hostile takeover bid by the Huge Group and a friendly offer from Volaris. The Volaris cash offer of R7 per share looks a foregone conclusion with Adapt IT set to become another departure from the local bourse. Whilst all this has been happening, ex-CEO Sbu Shabalala resigned following allegations that he ordered an assault on his estranged wife's partner. Dunsdon reflects on the challenges and difficulties faced since taking the reins only a few weeks ago.

Adapt IT had a tough year. The software services group has posted a 1% rise in annual revenue, as the impact of Covid-19 regulations weighed on its performance. Alishia Seckam spoke to CEO Tiffany Dunsdon for her perspective on the results

Businessman, entrepreneur, deal maker and advisor Duarte da Silva joins Duncan McLeod on the TechCentral podcast for a wide-ranging discussion about South Africa's IT industry, with a specific focus on Dimension Data. Da Silva recently posted a heartfelt tribute on LinkedIn to Jeremy Ord, Dimension Data's co-founder, who resigned last month as executive chairman after 34 years. The post has since gone somewhat viral. In the podcast, Da Silva talks about his days as a director and analyst at Merrill Lynch, where he covered Dimension Data and companies such as Persetel (headed at the time by Roux Marnitz), Q Data (the late Piet den Boer) and Altron (Bill Venter). Da Silva recalls some of the colourful characters at the time and how they helped shape South Africa's early IT industry - and why the country, curiously, was the only one in the world where Japan's Hitachi has a bigger share in mainframes than IBM. (Hint: It had to do with sanction and Marnitz's love of aviation.) He also talks about his first encounter with Ord, how Dimension Data attracted and cultivated top leaders - including Richard Came, David Frankel, Alon Apteker, Malcolm Rutherford and many others - who went on to great business success - and recounts a tale about a greulling, three-week investor road show in the US. The conversation then turns to the dot-com bust of 2000, how a US acquisition at the peak of the dot-com bubble severely hobbled Dimension Data and how the shifting sands of the IT sector - and a greater appreciation for technology among business leaders - led to tough years for the group. Da Silva, who now serves as chairman of Huge Group, also touches on Huge's pursuit of Adapt IT, why he's enjoying being back in the IT sector and what he plans to do in the coming years. Don't miss this riveting discussion!
There's a bidding war for Adapt IT. Huge Group has upped its offer for the IT services and software solutions group. The telecommunications player is now offering over R9 a share for Adapt IT as opposed to its initial offer of R5.52 per share. Business Day TV spoke to Huge's CEO, James Herbst about their growing interest in Adapt IT.

The shift to working from home and online learning as a result of Covid-19 has cushioned the full blow of the pandemic for software specialist Adapt IT with the group's total revenue slipping just 2% during its half-year. Business Day TV's Alishia Seckam spoke to CEO Sbu Shabalala for more detail.
Sbu Shabalala – CEO, Adapt IT
Adapt IT has opted to hold on to its final dividend as Covid-19 batters the SA economy. The technology group does however expect a bump from the education and telecoms sectors as the pandemic boosts demand for online learning and services related to working from home. Business Day TV caught up with Adapt IT CEO Sbu Shabalala to discuss the detail
We're diving into two quick but powerful concepts to help you navigate this wild time. And hey… if we do this right, we can all turn 2020 into one of our best years yet! That's no small order but I think we're all up for it. The key is our willingness to ADAPT and pivot (I'll give you some specific examples of what we've done with the show) and to ASK people what they want. This episode is short and sweet… AND we wrap up by asking what YOU want me to focus on as we look to finish 2020 strong! So let's get to this! “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” George Bernard Shaw “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” Bruce Lee “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” Stephen Hawking “Every success story is a tale of constant adaptation, revision, and change!” Richard Branson EPISODES MENTIONED: DTD INTERVIEW WITH MOVIE CRITIC RUSS MATTHEWS (Mitch's brother): MitchMatthews.com/104 GRATITUDE: We're kicking things off with some celebration and gratitude for YOU… the DREAM THINK DO-er! We're grateful for each and every download… because each one represents someone who's willing to defy the odds to DREAM bigger, THINK better, and DO more of what they were put on the planet to do! Recently, we've had downloads from places like China, Russia, and even Kazakhstan! Who knew? But we also hear from so many awesome DTDers in great places like Iceland, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Canada… and of course… my home… the USA! We're grateful for ALL of you and how you continue to invite others to join us too! THANK YOU! ADAPT: It's been a crazy year so far. Heck… I'm betting we can all agree it's one of the wildest any of us has ever experienced. It's shifted so many things. How we work, how we shop, how we eat, how we church, how we congregate and gather… heck… even how we do birthdays and weddings! Adapting and pivoting have had to become mainstream. One example is how it's hit the podcast industry. You may or may not know that many podcasts lost 30 to 50% of their downloads in one week. The week things REALLY shut down and almost everyone started to work from home. Why? Well, as it turns out… most people listened to podcasts while they were commuting and at work. So… if people aren't driving to work and/or sitting at their work desks… many aren't listening to podcasts. Boom. 30 to 50% gone. Overnight. We got hit by that too. But… we adapted. We started to watch the numbers to see where and when people started to listen. Not surprisingly, more people started to listen on the weekends. Also… not surprisingly… they started to listen for a shorter period of time. So… we shifted. (You may have noticed.) Now, instead of releasing on Tuesdays and promoting on Wednesdays. We're releasing on Thursdays or Fridays and promoting on Fridays or Saturdays. We also shorted the average episode length from 45 minutes to less than 20 minutes. We pivoted. You guys responded. So much so that although we took that 50% hit… like the rest of the industry… we're now hitting download numbers higher than what we were experiencing before this virus wildness came on the scene! #suckitcovid Thanks for helping to make that happen and thanks SO much for continuing to share DREAM THINK DO with your family and friends! We're so grateful for you! And hey… that's one example of some PIVOTS we've been experimenting with. How about you? What are some small (or big) changes you've been making to adapt and thrive in this weird wild season? We want to hear from YOU! (Comment below!) ASK: Also, as we adapt and pivot… we also want to ASK. That's right. I want to hear from YOU! Because I want us all to thrive in the midst of all the curveball...
