You may be sitting at your computer in sweats right now. But it doesn't mean B2B marketers like yourself aren't fashion conscious. There's actually a lot the fashion industry can teach us about marketing. You were likely marketed those sweatpants. So think about what made you want them. Why did you buy from that particular company? And what was the deciding factor that made you purchase them? It's likely the company understood their industry, personalized their message, and created original content. Those are a few of the things we're talking about today with Edgio's Director of Corporate Communications, Brand and Strategic Content, Sally Winship Comollo. Together, we're looking at B2B marketing lessons from The Devil Wears Prada. So put on your Chanel boots (they'll go great with your sweats) for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Sally Winship ComolloSally Winship Comollo is Director of Corporate Communications at Edgio. There, she leads the development and execution of strategic content and communications programs that drive awareness for the company's innovative edge platform. Previously, she led content and communications at Equinix. She has over 15 years of experience in marketing communications, content marketing, PR, and events, spanning various industries and sectors, from consumer electronics to cloud computing to legal services. Her core competencies include branding and positioning, content creation and distribution, experiential marketing and events, media and analyst relations, internal and employee communications, and social media. About EdgioEdgio is a globally scaled edge-enabled software solutions provider that helps companies deliver extraordinary digital experiences — faster websites, more responsive applications, the highest quality streaming, and more consistent game and software downloads, to any device.About The Devil Wears PradaThe Devil Wears Prada is about new college grad Andy Sachs who lands a job at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City, working as an assistant to the editor. It stars Anne Hathaway as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, Meryl Streep as the editor, Miranda Priestly, Stanley Tucci as art director Nigel Kipling, and Emily Blunt as Miranda's other assistant. The movie came out in 2006 and is based on the book by Lauren Weisberger. It was directed by David Frankel and produced by Wendy Finerman. The screenplay was written by Aline Brosh McKenna. The book was inspired by Lauren Weisberger's experience as an assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Devil Wears Prada: Know and understand your industry. As Andy is just learning about the fashion industry, she makes an offhand comment about clothing being “stuff.” Miranda Priestly is quick to remind Andy that she is, in fact, the target audience for that “stuff.” Miranda points out that Andy is wearing a cerulean sweater, a color blue made popular by the fashion industry. So knowing your industry means being able to make the discerning and nuanced choices that will speak more effectively to your target audience. So your message resonates with them above all others. You'll even be so effective, your audience won't even know they're being influenced by your “stuff.”Personalize your message. Andy memorizes the guest list for the Met Gala so she can be Miranda's reference when meeting them. So Miranda was able to personalize her greeting for each person. This small but critical tip is something we can apply to marketing. Sally says, “How do you personalize your message for your different customer segments or your different stakeholders?” You want each customer or each stakeholder to feel important and like they matter to your business. Personalization is a simple yet effective way to do that.Be agile. As Miranda says, “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.” Marketers have to be moving quickly and working to stay ahead of the every-changing industry landscape. Ian says, “Just pacing in general is really important. How quickly you're doing sprints or project delivery, whether or not something is good enough to go out, versus how long you spend on it. Like that, to me, is the hardest part of marketing, is ‘How much time do you spend on the thing?'”Create original content. In other words, don't recommend florals for your spring line of clothing. As Miranda says, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” It cuts to the core. Sally says when it comes to B2B marketing, “How do you break away from things that may seem easy? Like, ‘Oh, everybody's doing video now, so let's do video'. Well, video might not work for your audience, or how do you make videos, but better?” So don't follow the crowd, but fashion your own content.Quotes*”Our sales team is going through a very similar transition from just selling solutions or selling the product to value-based solution selling and transparent selling. David was a gun control advocate at the time. In fact, many of the attorneys who survived processed the horrific event solely and exclusively through the gun-control lens, founding a gun-control advocacy group that became something well known in gun control circles now. After the event, David experienced a slow political transformation about the meaning of the event. He describes his conversion from pro-gun control advocate to Second Amendment advocate in his short, substantive book, "Coming to Terms: A Mass Shooting Survivor's Story." Jerry and Marge Go Large is a down to earth American comedy drama based on a true story about about long-married couple Jerry and Marge Selbee. Jerry finds a mathematical loophole in the state lottery and wins millions, however he isn't the only one trying to cash in on the winnings. Him and his wife decide to take things to the next level by forming a corporation and recruits shareholders from his local town.Directed by David Frankel, Screenplay by Brad Copeland and based on the article written by Jason Fagone. The film stars Bryan Cranston as Jerry Selbee, Annette Bening as Marge Selbee, Rainn Wilson as Bill and Larry Wilmore as Steve.
Amy Baer currently serves as President of Landline Pictures, a label within MRC Film that makes feature films about and for the 50+ audience. Launched in 2020, their first movie, JERRY & MARGE GO LARGE, directed by David Frankel, who did MARLEY & ME, is streaming now on Paramount+. Starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, the film is based on the true story of a married couple who used a loophole in the Massachusetts State Lottery to win $27 million. I watched it with my dad a few weeks ago and it's incredibly fun and heartwarming. While Amy grew up in a showbiz family, she still had to carve her own path. One thing was certain: she did not want to be an actor. During her stint at CAA in 1988 as an assistant to the late Jay Moloney, she discovered the studio executive route. She eventually became President & CEO of CBS Films. She also spent 17 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where she oversaw impressive films such as: MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING (1997) ADAPTATION (2001) S.W.A.T. (2002) SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (2003) THE HOLIDAY (2006) MONEYBALL (2011) Amy's entrepreneurial spirit led her to raise seven figure development fund and launch Gidden Media, one of the industry's only female-led, independently financed content incubation companies. Her first film as a producer was the 2013 hit LAST VEGAS, starring Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, which grossed $136MM worldwide. A devoted wife and mother of two, Amy has also found time to be Board President of Women in Film since June 2018. A few takeaways from our chat include: Soaking up as much as you can when you are in a job you dislike How leaving the studio system forced her to develop an entrepreneurial muscle And how to not take things personally
Larry weighs in on his promo week appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, New York Magazine, and the HypochondriActor podcast in support of his role in the movie "Jerry & Marge Go Large' while also looking forward to his many projects coming up later in the year. He's then joined by Emmy and Oscar-winning director David Frankel to talk about his new film 'Jerry & Marge Go Large' and they start their discussion by giving a synopsis of the movie and explaining the rules of the 'Windfall' lottery game that lies at the heart of the plot.(13:00) They then examine David's film making process, his relationship with his DP Maryse Alberti, and Bryan Cranston's involvement with the development of the film.(23:00) David then details how he got started in the film industry and his philosophy on directing TV shows versus feature films.(34:18). David and Larry end the pod by debating the future of movies on the big screen after the pandemic and projects they hope to create in the future.(41:30) Host: Larry Wilmore Guest: David Frankel Producer: Chris Sutton Learn more about your ad choices. Prof. Carmen Joy Imes joins us to delve into the idea of being created "in the image of God." What's that mean? Who exactly is in God's image? Did we lose it with the "fall"? Does it have moral and ethnical ramifications for us today? Do some traditional understandings of being "in the image" exclude people with various disabilities? This episode in honor and memory of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is about the relationship between science and religion. It kicks off with an ammonite fossil, examines how several great religious thinkers have confronted the reality of fossils, explores The Map that Changed the World and Your Inner Fish (by Simon Winchester and Neil Shubin, respectively), and delves into the dialog carried on between Rabbi Sacks and Prof. Richard Dawkins. Some great quotes from the episode: Rabbi Sacks: "Where I think I disagree with Richard is that Richard sees religion and science as inevitably in conflict, and I see them as two different things altogether. Science can tell us about the origin of life; religion tells us about the purpose of life; science explains the world that is; religion summons us to the world that ought to be.” Rabbi Sacks: "I think we agree on the integrity of science, on the power that it has given us, and the immense dignity it that it represents. Richard accepts that as a fact. I accept that's what the Bible means when it says God made us in His image. But nonetheless we both cherish science as one of the great human achievements. And it is my belief that we will always need a sense of that which is beyond us in order to never lose sight of human dignity." Rabbi Sacks: "The first lesson any philosophy student ever learns is facts are one thing and values are another. When all the facts are in, the question of values still remains. And we will never get that from science which is brilliant at establish facts but cannot ordain values; and therefore for that, we have to look, ultimately I think, at the Ultimate itself, God Himself, or at the very least, if you don't believe, at least accept the wisdom that has been honed and refrained through three and a half thousand years and has brought and freedom, dignity, and hope to the world." Rabbi Sacks: "He goes around hitting religious people once in a while, and we probably need to be hit. God sent Richard Dawkins for a reason because we are too complacent, we believe 6 impossible things before... Support this podcast

In this episode we focus on Rosh Hashanah, one of the four Jewish new years, a day of judgment, and a fearful but festive holiday which Jews around the world celebrated just days before we recorded. We introduce Christians to the holiday from a Jewish perspective, discuss the idea of a new year, the nature of judgment, the trouble Christians have with Leviticus, and how Jews see Leviticus very, very differently. We also delve into the nature of creation, define the word mitzvah (“commandment”), describe the shofar (ram's horn trumpet, and here's how they're made: https://youtu.be/yC_OlvUU7_A (https://youtu.be/yC_OlvUU7_A)), and quickly define what is Shabbat (“the Sabbath”). Since this is our first episode, we start off by sharing our hopes and visions for the podcast.
