Greatness Magnified’s Sarah McVanel joins Mark on today’s episode of Level Up Your Life to discuss the Flip Side of Failing. Why is it so important to experience hard times? Why are we almost required to go through tough experiences before things get better? Mark and Sarah go in depth about failure, and why the most successful people on earth (well, in Canada) have attributed their biggest successes to it. They also talk about their own personal experiences and share stories about their own moments of crisis and how they lead to amazing transformations in their lives. A crisis moment that lead to a massive life transformation. A wacky idea that ended up being a great one. What’s conditional, what’s optional, and what’s not What does leveling up look like to you? What is the Flipside of Failure? “Once you truly start to look around at your life, and all of the things that you have been putting up with, you actually realize that you’ve been settling” “We didn’t want to create new problems while we were trying to solve other problems” “We have to be able to let go of what is in order to reach for what could be” “We have the definition of failure all wrong” “Failure is a part of that process” Get Flip Side of Failing! https://greatnessmagnified.com Share the show! www.markblack.ca/podcast More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible

Mark cares about helping you get to the next level in all areas of life, work, home, mental, physical and emotional. In this episode, Mark discusses the covid-19 pandemic and how you can deal effectively with it and the challenges it has created. It is all too easy to become overwhelmed when things like this happen, but Mark will help you think through the challenges with a level head and calm heart. In this episode, we discuss how to strike a healthy balance between striving for continuous growth and improvement, with maintaining stability and safety, especially in challenging situations. In the episode we focus on three key strategies: Acceptance - It is impossible to move forward constructively until we are willing to face the current reality completely. Even if our current situation is difficult, even dire, until we face it head on, we have no hope of moving forward constructively. Adapt: New realities require new strategy and tactics. What worked before, may not work now. Goals you set previously may no longer be realistic, they may not even serve you anymore. Discover what works by being adaptable and trying new things. Thrive: Some people survive challenging times, others thrive through them. Without discounting very real constraints, the difference between these two groups is mostly their mindset. Do you choose to learn and make progress despite obstacles, or are you only in self-preservation mode? It is all too easy to become overwhelmed when things like this happen, but Mark will help you think through the challenges with a level head and calm heart. In this episode, we’re talking about a new kind of SEO. You may be familiar with with Search Engine Optimization, but today we’re talking about the SEO that will allow you to be your most effective during the covid-19 crisis: Sacrifice, Empathy, and Optimism. Sacrifice - While this word has taken on a lot of negative connotations in our convenience culture, sacrifice is really just giving up something for the sake of something else. When we make intentional sacrifice for something that is meaningful to us, not only is the sacrifice more meaningful, it is also easier to make. Can you re-frame the hardships you are enduring now, as sacrifices that are worth making for the sake of others? Empathy - One way to ensure that we know our sacrifice is meaningful, is to become more empathetic. While it is very easy to become selfish and self-focussed during times like these, if we become more empathetic, we will better connect with the pain that other are experiencing and be more willing to take action to help. Optimism - It is very easy to be negative right now. If you are struggling with depression and anxiety, please reach out for professional support. It is normal, and getting help can make a big difference. But if you are not clinically depressed, but just feeling down because of all of the negativity around you, take matters into your own hands. Nurture positivity. Fill your mind with information about what is going well right now. Seek out opportunities - they always exist in times of great change. We need optimistic people now more than ever before. Welcome to the Level Up Your Life podcast hosted by the awe-inspiring, motivating, and passionate Mark Black. As a double transplant survivor Mark has a very exclusive and different take on life. Mark cares about helping you get to the next level in all areas of life, work, home, mental, physical and emotional. In this episode, Mark discusses how to use the downtime that we have been given to prioritize the things that really matter so that we can come out of this hard time better than how we went into it. Time: You are always saying “there aren’t enough hours in the day”. We all struggle to find time to do everything we want to get done. For most of us, we now have time we never had before. How can you use this time well? Relationships: If you are stuck in the house with the people you care about most, you can drive each other crazy, or you can use the time to nurture relationships that you may have been neglecting. When else in your life will you have this much time to truly connect in meaningful ways with the most important people in your life? Goal-Time: What if you spent the next several weeks (or months) focussed on accomplishing one specific goal. We can accomplish much more in bursts of focussed time, than we ever could using an hour here and there. What goal could you work on in the next few weeks that would make you a better person after this is over? Priorities It is very rare that we have an opportunity to take a step-back and evaluate what matters most to us and whether we are living our lives according to our values, but this is just such a time. Take some time our to think about what really matters most to you and whether or not you are happy with where your life is going. Health If you aren’t doing it already, now is THE TIME to prioritize your health. If you never have time to exercise, now you do. If you struggle to get enough sleep, use this time to catch up. If you typically depend on the drive thru and take out, start cooking REAL food. This is great time to make time for your health. It is all too easy to become overwhelmed when things like this happen, but Mark will help you think through the challenges with a level head and calm heart. In this episode, Mark provides 4 essential strategies for coping with the anxiety and worry caused by Covid-19. Worry Inventory It’s critical to articulate exactly what it is you are worried about so that you can deal with it effectively. When your worries are vague and unnamed, you can’t hope to deal with them well. Rely on Habits and Routines Humans are creatures of habit. We need our routines to keep us focussed and on track. If you don’t have good habits and routines already, start to create and implement them now. They help relieve a lot of the unknowns in your life and give you a greater sense of direction and control. Diversion This isn’t about indulging in useless distraction or numbing out from reality, but rather using this tactic to break harmful habit loops. Aim What do you want? When you examine your skills, talents and abilities, what do you find? What are you good? What are you passionate about? Who do you want to become? We are always growing. There is no such thing as staying still. You are always “becoming” someone new. The question is, who do you want that person to be? Where can you serve? Who needs the skills and abilities you have? Who do you have a passion to help? Where can you make the biggest difference? How do you want to be remembered? Two-time transplant survivor, four-time marathon runner, speaker, and coach Mark Black welcomes you to the Level Up Your Life Podcast. If you’re here that means you are ready to take some necessary steps to change your life. One of the wonderful things about this podcast is Mark doesn’t focus on just your work or just your relationships. He encompasses your entire life: work, finance, relationships, fitness, emotional & mental wellbeing. He wants you to join him on the next level and with his advice, you surely will. Take a deep cleansing breath, grab a notebook and a pen, and get ready to make the changes you’ve been thinking about making! In this episode, Mark talks about simplicity. We live in a complicated world of technology and many options on how to do things, but when we make things simpler we de-stress. We live multi-faceted lives and it’s very easy for life to get complicated. Why would we want to make things simpler? Better execution Mark gives an example of being on a specific diet for 5 years. People don’t typically stay on diets because they’re complicated: points, counting calories, weighing food . . . etc. He has been able to stay on this diet because it’s a black and white - eat this, don’t eat this and requires very little effort on his part. Allows us to be consistent - easier to automate Doing something once is great (and better than not ever doing it at all), but it won’t change your bottom line. Doing something consistently helps us make the changes we want to make in our lives. Allows ideas and strategies to expand Mark gives an example of charity walks: sign up, put on shoes, go and walk. Popular best selling toys of all time: yo-yo and silly putty (SIMPLE). Reduces stress Expanding on exercise example: get up, go to the gym, come home shower, and go back to work/home. You can get the same amount of exercise at home. Pre-prepared meals Allows you to focus at a greater level is a key element in getting results Focusing the suns rays can burn a hole in a paper Time, energy, desire Mark discusses the financial structure his family has been using. Everyone wants to achieve success. The question is: what does "success" really mean and, more importantly, how do you get it? Most of us have taught about success in the wrong way. We have been taught to set goals, create actions to pursue those goals, and then enjoy the rewards. The problem with this model is that it makes your happiness contingent on your results. To HAVE what you want, you have to DO what it takes, and then you can BE happy. Have-Do-Be is a broken model. In this episode, Mark suggests flipping that model on its head: Be-Do-Have. Focus first on your identity and who you want to become; then discern the actions that kind of person would take; so that you can have the things that kind of person would have. In this episode we talk about: Why the Have, Do, Be model of success is broken Where real happiness comes from and how to achieve it (did you know lottery winners are no happier than you are? Why you have to get "right with yourself" first before you can ever hope to have what you want How to think about your goals in a different way that are based in IDENTITY rather than in RESULTS Level Up! www.levelupimpact.com Use code PODCAST Share the show! www.markblack.ca/podcast More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible

While not the sexiest of topics, it’s super important when it comes to discussing the accomplishments of high achievers! Mark is no stranger to progress, as he spends the vast majority of his time teaching others how to achieve it, and yet even he fails to recognize the benefits of taking things slowly sometimes! Want to learn how to use the pace of progress to your advantage? Tune in to this episode and adopt a new outlook on things that can sometimes feel like they’re taking forever! Major significant change rarely happens quickly. Pick any problem and someone is out there offering a “quick solution”. Are you engaged in meaningful work? Do you know what to look for? How about the word meaningful, do you feel you have a deep understanding of what it means and know how to tell if you’re on the right track? If you’re not sure about any of that, how about this: Do you like the people you work with? The job itself? The tasks you do? If so, then fantastic! What starts off as a simple concept grows into a very high quality conversation about creating a life with less friction, and more happiness, and truly levelling up to your true potential. Mark and Eric also share their mutual opinion on the single most wasteful activity a person can spend time doing, and why taking responsibility for your own happiness is kind of a big deal. What is considered to be meaningful work? What is success? Resistance and challenge within the job could very well be a big part of what makes it fulfilling. How do you go about finding something you’ll enjoy? 5 questions to ask yourself when you want to know if you’re on the right track or not. You are responsible for your own joy and fulfillment. Can you be a little bit happier than yesterday? Not all advice is good advice for you. “I recognized at a very young age, because I was forced to, that our time is finite” - Mark “What is the life you want to live?” - Eric “We’re still trying to paint success with one broad stroke of a brush” - Eric “Who is working where at the places you frequence most?” - Eric “A ‘Why’ attracts talent, but a ‘How’ keeps it” - Eric “Outside of everyone we have contact with is a world of bystanders” - Eric “Maybe where we are right now is exactly where we need to be” - Eric “Where can there be more happiness?” - Eric More Eric! www.erictermuende.com Level Up! www.levelupimpact.com Use code PODCAST Share the show! www.markblack.ca/podcast More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible
What is your passion? Do you know what passion truly feels like? How do you find what you’re most passionate about if you know that what you’re doing right now isn’t it? A lot of people have a misconception about passion that often leaves them confused about what passion really is. They think that if they are passionate about something, it means that they have to enjoy every aspect of what it is they do. On today’s episode of Level Up Your Life, host Mark Black is here to tell us that it simply isn’t the case. Passion is not about loving everything about your job or hobby, it’s a lot deeper and more meaningful than that, and at the same time, a little more possible to attain than a perfect career. Whether you’re unsure of how to find your passion, don’t know what passion is, or want to reignite and old passion that you’ve lost in your journey, this episode is a great one for you! What exactly is passion? This is not an episode telling you to quit your job and follow your passion. What excites you? What makes you come alive? Do you truly dislike the job, or do you actually just dislike certain tasks? What are the things that you do where you lose track of time? What are you really good at without trying really hard? Do people ask you for advice on certain topics? “How do I know if I’m passionate?” “Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean it’s not going to be hard” “What makes me come alive?” “What are the things that people admire you for?” “Because it comes easily to you doesn’t mean it comes easily to everyone” “Most things can be turned into a career or a business” “We love to watch people do what they do best” “There is always a price to pay to improve or get better” Level Up! www.levelupimpact.com Use code PODCAST Share the show! www.markblack.ca/podcast More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible

We all want to level up our lives, don’t we? In this episode, Mark Black is sharing what he believes is the number one tool to help you discover your full potential, ensure you’re operating at 100%, and help you grow into the person you were meant to be! What is the secret? Doing difficult or challenging things! While this may seem a little counterintuitive in a world where ease and convenience is taking over, the truth is that the more comfortable we get, the harder it is to handle life when it doesn’t go exactly the way we want it to. The result? Prolonged Unhappiness. When things go wrong, or are out of our control, we tend to drag out the resistance to the issue, the feelings of dissatisfaction, and even the anger or frustration surrounding the issue! Doing hard things won’t ensure that bad things never happen to you again, but it will make those bad things so much easier to deal with when they do arise. Does this sound like something you’d like to participate in? Click play and tune into this week’s episode of Level Up Your Life! Seeking out challenges and opportunities to face resistance can help you become a much more resilient person! Life was a lot more difficult 200 years ago than it is today, and so there was a lot more opportunity to face adversity than there is today. Is having things easier really a good thing? Is the challenge truly difficult, or is it our resistance to the challenge that makes it difficult? Learn to accept the things you cannot control. Discomfort won’t actually kill you, even if it feels like it might. Delayed gratification may be the ultimate secret to a fulfilling life! “Do the things in your life that you find difficult, challenging, annoying. Do those things” “We have come to equate easier with better” “The best way to become resilient is to get good at doing hard things” “Where are you spending most of your time and energy?” “Being uncomfortable helps me to realize that I’m okay” “Not getting everything you want is okay” “As soon as we fulfill one impulse, there’s another impulse” “The people who level up in their life do the hard things” Share the show! www.markblack.ca/podcast More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible
Do you have big goals? Do you want to impact the world in a huge way? It’s truly amazing if you do! Massive vision and big, hairy audacious goals are pretty rare in a world where people would rather play it safe and small than risk failure. But what happens when your goals are so big that you find yourself getting overwhelmed or burning out? See, most people only address the Thinking Big part, very few really shed light on the significance of starting small. There are a lot of benefits to starting small and building the to level you want to be, rather than starting huge and putting too much pressure and stress on yourself. Don’t know how to do it? Tune into this episode of Level Up Your Life and let our host, Mark Black take you through the process and help you think big, and start exactly where you are! It’s crucial to have big goals and huge vision, but there is an equally important concept in starting small. Why do people try to talk you out of your goals? Setting goals is not about trying to predict your future. What happens when someone pushes you that little bit extra? Why is momentum so important and how do you build it? “Imagine a world where everybody was living at 100%” “If you don’t have expectations, if you don’t have any goals, then you have nothing to be disappointed about” “To have no goals, or to have very conservative goals misses the point completely” “A goal that’s useful should scare you a little bit” “I’m not interested in correctly predicting what I can accomplish” “The point of having a great vision is to get people excited” “We achieve to the level we expect” “There is nothing small minded about starting small, so long as the vision is big” “Dream a big dream and then break it down” Share the show! www.levelupyourlifepodcast.com More Mark: Your Best Year Yet transformation Program Mark's website Mark's LinkedIn profile Mark's Twitter profile Mark's Facebook profile Click HERE for one month FREE Audible
