"Talking to Adrian Hayes is an adventure in itself " says Phil Blizzard with this episode taking you, via your "Airpods'  from the comfort of your 'zone' to the frozen, almost,  vertical rock face close to the 8,586m summit of Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas.Adrian Hayes is heading back to the Himalayan 8000m giants with an expedition to attempt the majestic Kanchenjunga - the little known, 3rd highest mountain in the world, located on the Eastern Nepal and Indian border.  We start by talking about the preparations  for the expedition and the challenges to be faced. In this conversational journey  we reflect on his previous major expeditions and his collection of world records - including the Three Poles Challenge. Climbing Mount Everest and walking to both the North & South Poles!  Which, when talking about bringing up a teenage daughter he said "was more demanding than summiting  Everest and reaching the two poles "!Our common connection with the Middle East comes into the conversation - with my memories of him dragging car tyres across the beaches of Dubai for some reason or other! How the UAE and the delightful Oman offers so much to adventurers. Plus recollections of 'The Soldier of Arabia - David Neild'  and so much more, including the special affiliation Adrian has with the Gurkha regiment.Adrian also talks about his other life  - that as a professional speaker - human development and what adventuring brings to that table, and vice versa. Finally a concluding piece which Adrian Hayes has provided about the forthcoming expedition.‘Kanch' rises to a height of 8,586 m (28,169 ft); is huge, remote, steep and technical, with a near vertical rock face near the summit and, above all, the longest summit push of any 8000 m mountain on Earth. The fact that there are only approx. 25 climbers attempting it this year, compared to the hundreds that will shortly be on Everest, testimony to it being one of the least climbed 8000ers. It has always held a special place with me, being located in my former Gurkha regiment's recruiting heartlands of Eastern Nepal; having first seen it in the early 90s on a welfare trek whilst serving in the Brigade; and long having ambitions to climb it. On the trek in I will be visiting 7th Gurkha Rifles pensioners and their families gathered for their annual reunions in the Gurkha Welfare Trust Welfare Centres of Phidim and Taplejung - a role I undertook in 2022 which was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had in the country. It's 18 years since I climbed Everest, 10 years since summiting K2 and nine since our aborted attempt on Makalu (the 5th highest mountain in the world). And following last year's return to high altitude mountaineering and our ‘warm up' attempt of the difficult Pumori (7181 m), I have been preparing and planning ever since - the joys, total absorption and complete focus of a major goal! For further information visit www.adrianhayes.com

Dear DCIS Parents, We have finally reached the end of a very busy and successful term and I am sure all members of the DCIS community are looking forward to a well-earned rest. The highlight of the half term was the visit by the CIS and WASC accreditation teams. As I write we are still waiting for the formal outcome of the process but we had some lovely feedback from the visitors and we eagerly await the formal reports. We are very proud of our achievements at Dover Court and (without getting too far ahead of ourselves!) therefore we are grateful of an external validation of this from two respected accreditation agencies. I will be in contact early next term with the official outcome of the visit and a summary of the commendations and recommendations the team makes. We have had some really interesting visitors to the school including Adrian Hayes, who holds the record for climbing Everest and visiting both poles in 18 months. He will be back next term to speak to more of our year groups. Zoe Griffiths enchanted our Secondary students with the wonders of the power of Maths and we had visitors from Michael Ng and Esther Seah Hui En from The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) to support our students’ learning in History. We also enjoyed two very powerful visits from NAE Juilliard specialists in Drama and Dance. The UN Day was another wonderful success this year. It was fantastic to see our families representing and sharing information on the 55 countries and territories we have in the school community. I am grateful for the hard work of our UN committee led by Ms Hyland and Ms Gray for their great work pulling this together. One of my many regrets of not being at DCIS next year is seeing how the school continues to develop this lovely exposition of our diverse Dover Court community. Our choir have been involved in two high profile events this half term. The first was singing, with the choirs from the other British Schools in Singapore and southern Malaysia, at the annual Remembrance Service at Kranji. The second was providing the welcome entertainment at the Great British Ball organised by the British Chamber of Commerce and the British Club. We had a number of trips and expeditions this term. A group of intrepid Secondary students took part in the World Scholars Cup, firstly in Manila and then at the Grand Final in Yale, USA. The team came back with an impressive haul of medals. Year 5 started the year group expeditions with a four-day trip to Indonesia and came back with many an exciting tale of their adventures. In sport our first ever NAE games team made up of 19 boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 competed against 9 other NAE SEA schools in Vietnam. A great time was had with some good team performances. The ACSIS season 1 ended in November, with some fantastic results for DCIS. Our U16 boys football team won a bronze medal and our U12 netballers “cleaned up” with gold, silver and bronze medals in their respective divisions. There was also the Middle School Swimming Championships, with many swimmers setting personal records. It was really good to see over 90 runners from Years 3-12 representing DCIS at the ACSIS cross-country championships held at Pasir-Ris. A huge well done to our U14 Boys team who gained a bronze medal out of 19 schools. Within Primary PE it has been superb to see a record number of teams and students competing in a variety of sports in a non-competitive environment, with up to 15 teams playing each week. We have also been really pleased to introduce numerous new teams, including our first ever U11 boys and girls basketball teams, secondary girls contact rugby teams an U16 boys rugby team and several dance groups.

Imagine you get the chance to go on a Grand Adventure … walking across the Arctic to the North Pole, or walking to the South Pole, or maybe climbing to the very top of Mount Everest. Which adventure would you choose? If you’re Adrian Hayes, you pick all three, and then do all three in world record time. Mr. Hayes has held the Three Poles Challenge world speed record, after he walked to the North Pole, and the South Pole, and climbed Mount Everest—in nineteen months and three days. It’s called the Three Poles Challenge because explorers try to reach the two farthest-apart points on earth, and the very highest point. Mr. Hayes tried out lots of different jobs on the way to becoming an adventurer. He worked as a bricklayer, a farmer, and a builder’s worker. He sang and played guitar in a rock band. He was a paramedic with the Special Air Services before going to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. As a British officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas, he served in Hong Kong and Brunei, and later, with the Royal Army of Oman. And he learned to speak Arabic and Nepali. After leaving military service and working as a sales director, Mr. Hayes began his climbing and trekking adventures. He followed up the Three Poles Challenge by crossing 1,600 kilometers of the Arabian Desert, on foot and on camel. This area is called the Empty Quarter and it’s the largest “sea” of sand in the world. In 2014, he and his team reached the top of K-2, the world’s second tallest mountain. K-2 “was my biggest challenge,” he says, because it is “way steeper” than nearby peaks, and its weather conditions are much worse. Climbing is his favorite adventure, he adds, because you’re in a different world. You have to stay really focused and think only of your next move. Mr. Hayes is the first Briton and only the third person in the world to reach the summit of the two highest mountains and to trek to both the North and South poles. His advice for kids who wonder what adventures they might have? “Write down your goals for the year,” a few months at a time. Figure out what your skills are. And if you’re not sure, ask your teachers or parents!
