Neom is a $1T, 10.2k mile utopia currently being built in the Saudi Arabian desert. This luxury area will, of course, also now have a large golf “community” that looks straight out of a billionaire's dream sequence. Seems nice, but what are the issues with creating this giant adult theme park? Plus: Reddit targets a rise in valuation and Airbnb bans indoor surveillance. How To Introduce A Keynote Speaker: Ensuring A Memorable Beginning Greetings, I am James Taylor, a renowned keynote speaker and the proud founder of SpeakersU. This moment finds me in a unique Bedouin tent in the vast expanses of the Arabian Desert. If you're a regular listener, you know that I'm interested in the sounds of the natural world and have interviewed quite a few sound recordists on this program. In this episode, you're going to meet a guy who is more than just a sound hobbyist. He works all over the world for big movie studios—in fact, when we recorded this, he had just returned from a shoot in the Sahara Desert in Algeria for a big Hollywood production He also produces sounds for the video game industry, which is far more complicated than you may think. My guest is George Vlad. I learned about George's work a few years ago when I ran across a photograph of him standing on the lip of a volcano with a boom pole extended over the rim. He has recorded soundscapes all over the world: the Amazon Basin, Borneo, the Arabian Desert, the rainforests of west Africa, Madagascar, and all over Europe, including in his native Romania. You can learn more about George and his work, and listen to some great tutorials, at mindful-audio.com, or at his YouTube site. But first, meet George. Welcome to Day 2176 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom The Gospel of John – 36 – Jesus Prayed for You – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 10/23/2022 The Gospel of John – Part 4 Confirmation Of The Word – Jesus Prayed For You Today we continue our series on the Good News according to John the Apostle. Last week, Jesus prayed that His final act as the Word made Human would bring glory to God as He completed His mission. He then prayed for His disciples that they would be set apart, or sanctified as they continued the mission that He began, which was to build God's kingdom until He returned to restore the Global Eden. In John 17:17-19, Jesus said, 17 Sanctify them by the truth;/ your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. (set apart) Our scripture for today is John 17:20-26, starting on page 1680 in the Pew Bible. Today we continue the Lord's Prayer as Jesus prays for all believers in a message titled Jesus Prayed For You. Follow along as I read. Jesus Prays for All Believers 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father,/ just as you are in me/ and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” Let me start today with a story. Josephus, the 1st and 2nd-century Jewish historian, records a marvelous story that may or may not be accurate. In his great campaign for world domination in the 330s BC, Alexander the Great moved from the Hellespont to Egypt, laying siege to walled cities and conquering land in between. His path to Egypt took him down the narrow land bridge between the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Desert, a land ruled by Jerusalem. Israel was a choice piece of land for anyone wanting to control trade with Egypt. No one knew that better than the citizens of Jerusalem, who...

Rich Ferreira and Rich Liverance recently visited Saudi Arabia. Although Mount Sinai has been identified with a mountain in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt since the 4th century A.D., several biblical passages seem to indicate that Mount Sinai is in Arabia. Could the wilderness wanderings of the Israelites have taken place in Arabia rather than Egypt?Rich and Rich explored not only the possible Mount Horeb from Exodus 19-20, but also several other sites that align with the text. These sites include the Split Rock (Exodus 17), the grove of 70 palm trees at Elim (Exodus 15), and an altar with bull/cow carvings on boulders at the foot of Mount Horeb (Exodus 32). It is possible that these locations are where Moses struck the rock for water, where the Israelites crossed and where they worshipped the golden calf!Regardless of the answers to these questions, exploring the backroads of this austere landscape was both exhilarating and challenging. A 4X4 vehicle is a must in the Arabian Desert. No tour buses allowed! Visit https://gtitours.org/podcast for photos, links, and more from this episode. https://gtitours.org/saudi-trip
Welcome back to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was the third day in Riyadh, and at 11 am, we left the apartment and our base for four nights. After a stop in a unique and impressive modern mall with a great water feature, I left the capital of Saudi Arabia with my travel friend, Cynthia, in our rental car to find the "Edge of the World". The Edge of the World Riyadh is on a plateau. And there's a place on the edge of this plateau called ”Edge of the World”. You would normally book expensive tours – at up to $500+US per person, to go there. But we decided to self-drive. There are two access roads to the official point. One is only open on weekends (and not this day), and the other access was in bad condition and currently only good by 4WD. We got lucky that Cynthia has a local acquaintance from the CouchSurfing community, Mohammad. He told us how to get to the REAL Edge of the World. It is near, but not at the tourist spot. These directions included something like: "Go to the Mosque" "Go to End of Road" "Don't Die". Here's Mouhammad's full message: ”Go to the Mosque Ammaria Hills. Drive past the Mosque (it is on your right); go to the END of the paved road. Here go left. Then, take the first right. Then you'll start to see the Edge to your left. Pick a spot along the edge and be CAREFUL CAREFUL, as several people died here recently.” The directions seemed crazy, but they worked smoothly. We even saw our first two camels at the end of the paved road. We saw zero cars or people after the Mosque Ammaria Hills. The Edge of the World (also called Jebel Fihrayn) is an unexpected and dramatic geological wonder in the rocky desert. The site earned its nickname because you have an uninterrupted view of the horizon, and it kinda looks like it. It's a 1,131 m2 height cliff that lies some 100 km northwest of Riyadh and a great place to discover the breathtakingly spectacular views overlooking a deep valley and extending barren desert. It's one of the most famous sights in Saudi Arabia, and for a good reason. These cliffs rise dramatically from the desert, stretching toward the sky like a great natural wall and the cliff face is 300 meters tall. Maybe more in some places. When we stand on top of them and look toward the horizon, it seems as if the sky is melting into the earth. At the Edge, we pulled out onto the edge of the Edge at several points, being careful not to get stuck – and not to drive over the edge like Thelma and Louise. We were at Edge until 4 pm. It is a must-do. Although it's only an hour from Riyadh, it was unbelievably remote and exciting. From the Edge, we could see endlessly across the desert, which was created 150 million years ago when a shallow sea existed here. Now there's no water because Saudi Arabia is a dry country. And speaking of that, let's have a look at the Saudi weather. THE WEATHER Saudi Arabia is a large country located in the Middle East, and the climate varies significantly across different regions. But, in general, Saudi Arabia has a hot desert climate with very little rainfall. The eastern region and the southern areas – just south of where we are now, are one of the largest sand deserts in the world; it is considered one of the driest places on earth. Here rainfall is extremely rare; sometimes, it doesn't rain for years. In the capital city of Riyadh, the average annual rainfall is less than an inch (2.5 cm). They say it only rains two days a year in Riyadh. Temperatures in Saudi Arabia can be pretty extreme, with average high temperatures ranging from the 30s Celsius (mid-80s Fahrenheit) in the winter to over 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer. The hottest temperatures are typically found in the eastern provinces, while the cooler temperatures are found in the western provinces, such as Jeddah and Mecca. Overall, the weather in Saudi Arabia is characterised by hot temperatures and low humidity throughout the year. It is important to stay hydrated and to protect yourself from the sun when visiting the country. But we got the rare experience of seeing rain in Saudi Arabia. A very rare experience in the desert. Driving across Saudi Arabia We started the road trip across the country and made a stop halfway to Al-Ula in a city called Hail. As soon as we leave Riyadh and head north, it is very flat with yellow sand. It is a big 6-lane divided highway with very little traffic. The roads throughout our trip are the same. They are large, in good condition and often more trucks or camels than cars. And thank God, 95% of road signs are in both Arabic and English. The locals told us they are not driving as fast and crazy as they used to because the government has installed many speed cameras. The maximum speed is 110 km/h, so travel is slower than we expected, and the distances between cities is big in this huge country. Camel Spotting After half an hour of driving, we see our first truck with four camels seated in the back. The nearly identical white trucks, often Toyotas, carry one to six camels. Each truck has a crane to lift the animals in and out. The camels look relaxed, almost as if they're enjoying the breeze and the ride. Along the way, we also see three colours of camels: white, brown, and black. Our first sighting of a larger group of camels was of twelve strolling parallel to the highway. One of the locals had stopped and tried to get them off the road. Next up, we spotted a huge herd of 100 all-white camels (with one black one.) Orange Sand Dunes Then we entered Orange Sand Dunes. They stretch as far as the eye can see. These are much larger than the Red Sand Dunes to the south of Riyadh, where we went quad biking. The colours of the sand are varied as you look both close to the road and in the distance. We see pink, purple, black, yellow, white, and orange sand on the drive today. Accommodation in Saudi Just after 7 pm, we arrive at our accommodation in the city of Hail, nestled between Mount Shammer to the north and Mount Salma to the south. Hail was once the capital of the Arabian Desert. Consistently throughout Saudi, we easily rent 2-bedroom apartments via Hotels25.com. They average around $100 US a night. This one was $76 for a night. Like the one in Riyadh, this one was also a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit. But it only contains one towel; there is not a single utensil or pan in the huge kitchen. Saudi Arabia is only recently opened to tourists, so it's like they are not really ready for tourists anticipating tourist needs. So, we soon learn to look and ask for: toilet paper, towels, hot water kettle and kitchen utensils. When we ask, the response is always that of extremely high Saudi hospitality: the desk clerk will say something like, "If I have it, it is yours"; then he will rush to go get the requested items. Meeting a Friendly Local The next morning, we got an early start without having breakfast. I just thought I'd buy something on the way and eat it in the car. But then something happened. Something very strange, surprising, and heart-warming. They didn't accept Visa or MasterCard (only their local Saudi Mada Card), and one of the other customers offered to pay for me. And he insisted that I fill a bag with lots of stuff. It was a very surprising and nice meeting with a random stranger. Getting Stuck in the Sand On the way from Hail to Al Ula, we took a driving break on the shoulder by the road. It looked fine, but too late, I realised that the sand was fine and soft – and we got stuck in the sand by the highway. And that was just the first time that happened. Getting stuck in the sand will happen four times on this trip. And twice in our next stop, Al Ula. After a bit of digging, shoving stuff under the tires of our front-wheel drive car, and pushing, we were off driving again. Al-Ula We arrived in Al-Ula at 3 in the afternoon. It's located in northwest Saudi Arabia and is known for its historical and cultural significance, as well as its natural beauty. It's also known for its ancient rock carvings, tombs, and ruins dating back to the pre-Islamic era. The area around Al-Ula has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city has been an important cultural and economic centre throughout its history and contains many important archaeological sites. One of them is the Hegra, which features a well-preserved set of tombs carved into the rock, many of which are decorated with incredible carvings and inscriptions. In recent years, Al-Ula has become a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Saudi government has been investing in developing the area as a tourist destination with the aim of showcasing its rich history and natural beauty. Al-Ula is also known for its unique geography with a mix of rocky desert and oasis, uniquely shaped rock formations, and has been a key location for many movies and TV shows. When we got there, we went directly to the most famous natural site and one of these uniquely shaped rock formations: Elephant Rock. It's very quiet here, and more grounds-maintenance workers than tourists. Later, approaching sunset, two information ladies and more visitors will arrive. But we have a relaxed stroll and sit with a drink from the cafe. Elephant Rock is in front of us and towers at 52 m (171 feet) in the air. It really looks like a huge elephant (see pictures on theradiovagabond.com and on Instagram). Just before sunset, we head around "Vessel Rock," then pick a sunset spot, surrounded by hundreds of rock monoliths. Next Week on The Radio Vagabond In the next episode, a week from now on “Travel Tuesday”, we will speak to a young Saudi woman. She's dressed very western, is not wearing any hair covering and has perfect English. We'll also head further down the coast of the Red Sea to Yanbu and the big city of Jeddah, where we CouchSurf with a local. But also, I have an extra episode on Thursday where I speak with my Saudi friend, “J”. He's agreed to answer ANY question I have. Let's end with a poem written A.I. The Radio Vagabond, Palle Bo,Went to the edge of the world in Saudi, Where huge cliffs loomed high and big drops did flow, And the landscape was beauty to see. He threw a rock down with care, Not wanting to drive over like Thelma and Louise, And across the hot desert they did fare, Getting stuck in the sand, but not to lose. They met many camels on the way, And a kind Saudi man paid for their breakfast, In the UNESCO site of Al-Ula they did stay, Where the Elephant Rock and unique formations did impress. So come and listen to the podcast, From Saudi Arabia, there's much more to come, With Palle Bo as your guide, you'll be engrossed, In the tales of adventure and fun. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name. It is Wednesday morning, 31st August 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.“And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.”Genesis 7:24Abraham staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief but remain strong giving glory to the Lord. Romans 4:20One of the marks of great men and women of God is patience. Abraham waited one hundred years before he received his son, Isaac, from the Lord. Noah spent one hundred and fifty days in the ark before the waters subsided. Paul, the Apostle, in my humble opinion, was the greatest of all the apostles, he was sent to the Arabian Desert for three years before God used him. (Galatians 1:18). We need to wait upon the Lord! Many of us struggle in that area, I am one of them, but there's no excuse. I've been watching a program on television called “The Hundred Days Makeover”, with wild horses that come from the wide-open prairies of the USA and have never, ever, been handled by a human being. They have a competition where each trainer is given one horse and one hundred days to gentle that wild horse, and the one that does it the best wins. You know, I love horses. I have two myself and they are magnificent animals. Winston Churchill said, “There's something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” I watched a young teenage girl working with one of those horses. She worked with that horse for a hundred days every single day. These animals were wild, very capable of hurting you badly, and yet, after a hundred days of patience, love and perseverance, that young lady was on that Mustang's back, riding him around like he was a domesticated, locally-bred horse. It brought a tear to my eye. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Galatians 6:9Don't give up. Be patient, be patient with that child, be patient with that husband, be patient with that wife, with those employees, and the Lord will see you through! Have a wonderful day,Jesus bless you,Goodbye.

Church History Part 12 The Birth of Islam Today we see a new religion, some would say threat, coming towards Christianity – Islam! Islam is a religion strictly following one God. The adherents of Islam, Muslims, follow their book, the Koran (the verbatim words of Allah) and the Sunnah (teachings and examples give by Mohammed, the last prophet of God.) Background In Arabia at the time, the religious background was like this: There was a strong belief held by many people in one supreme God, in the Arabic language - Allah. There was however some worshipping of other gods & goddesses. Prime in their thinking at the time, was a form of fatalism - that everything that occurred was determined by fate or time. Nothing could be done to change things that were happening. There was some Jewish and Christian influence but it was largely negated. Mohammed 570-632 Into this comes the main man and founder of Islam – Mohammed. He was born in Mecca in 570. It was while he was seeking solitude within the Arabian Desert, that he claimed to have received messages from God, via the Angel Gabriel. Mohammed claims to have received the whole of the Koran (Moslem Scripture), which was claimed to have always existed in heaven but was now on earth. He was to be the message of Allah! Mohammed was given the task of telling others about Allah and what Allah had said in this book, the Koran. Mohammed preached from the Koran when he returned to Mecca, but was initially rejected by the masses. That was soon to change! Mohammed's message. People were to believe in Allah and live in obedience to him. In particular is this key statement of faith: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Mohammed is the Apostle of God. There was only one God, Allah. God could not have a Son and God was One. God most certainly was not a Tri-Unity or Trinity as believed by Christians. Prayer was to be done 5 times daily and always facing towards Mecca. There was to be generous giving to charity. There was to be regular periods of fasting. During the lifetime of a follower of Islam, there was to be a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. Basic beliefs A Muslim is one who lives according to God's will as expressly given in the Koran. Islam is submission to God. Islam accepts parts of Judaism & Christianity quoting extensively from the Old Testament in the Koran. Jesus Christ is accepted as a prophet of God, but not the Son of God. Mohammed is the last and greatest prophet. They do not believe Jesus Christ was crucified and died, but that there was a substitution done for him. They do however broadly accept his miracles and virgin birth. While there are some similarities with Christianity, they miss the whole point of God's revelation to man in Christ & Christ's death for our sins. There is no plan of salvation apart from works. Islam's spread Despite being initially rejected by people, Islam and the message of Mohammed soon spread quickly. Raiding parties from Arabia, captured neighbouring lands and Islam became the religion of these peoples. The Islamists treated their captured people well, therefore Islam grew in acceptance. Within only 12 years, Egypt, Syria and Iraq were occupied by Muslims, quickly spreading to North Africa and Spain. The spread into Europe was checked however at the battle of Tours in 732 when Charles Martel led Christian armies into victorious battle. Are You Committed? By Tammy Lacock In this week's podcast, Warren continues to explain the two important commitments in which God's plan operates. The first is Christ's deep commitment to us. In His death, He committed His life so that in His death, we too would die to our old lives, and in his resurrection, we would also rise to live a new life in Him. He who knew no sin bore all of our sins and transgressions so that we would be freed from Adam's curse of sin and the law. By only believing, we are saved from this world and Christ becomes our new life. We are born again. We are now complete in Him, finally allowing us to be who God created us to be. Nothing else fits us but Christ. In His commitment to us, God gave us His Son as our hope, our only hope of glory. The second is our commitment to Christ who now lives in us. Warren emphasizes that only through Paul's writings are we able to understand how to live now with Christ as our new life. Are we committed to Him? Or are we still living our old lives? Paul was the only man raised up by Christ, Himself, to bring us the message of Christ alive in us. It was revealed to him in the Arabian Desert, and he brought it first to the believers in Antioch, where they were first called Christians, or Christ-persons. Paul began to explain our new life in Christ and how we are to live with this knowledge. His message changed the course of history, yet it has yet to really take hold. Most Christians don't know who they are in Christ. At least three times, Paul says this knowledge was given to him to give to us (Ephesians 3:2). He also says, “Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Cor. 11). And in Philippians 3:8, he says, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.” Paul explains that we must change our thinking. In order to live here and now, he says, we must commit ourselves to the Christ within us. When we come to know and love Him more and more, we grow to understand His deep commitment to us, a commitment made before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). We grow to understand that we, too, are now sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. We grow to learn of His unconditional love and His relentless grace. We grow to understand the price He paid so He can be our new life. And according to Paul, it's not so much about getting into Heaven. Although we are saved by just believing, it's about our love affair with, and commitment to, Christ now. And so I ask again, are you committed to Christ? Or are you still living your old life?
When the darkness you are experiencing is God-ordained, don't try to create your own light: ‘You who…walk in the light of your fires…will lie down in torment.' Abraham decided to kindle his own fire when God's promise of an heir didn't materialise quickly enough. Tired of waiting, he decided to go it alone by fathering Ishmael, and ended up creating problems that would last for generations. God had already promised to liberate Israel, but Moses took it upon himself to do things his way. As a result he killed an Egyptian slave master and spent the next forty years in the wilderness (see Exodus 2:11-15). Peter promised to follow Jesus to prison and to death (see Luke 22:33), but because he didn't wait for instructions he ended up lopping off an innocent man's ear. When you're in darkness by divine design you don't have to be afraid, God will bring you through. Why are we so sure? Because the Bible gives us great promises like: ‘Light arises in the darkness for the upright' (Psalm 112:4 AMP), and ‘weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning' (Psalm 30:5 KJV). The forty days Moses spent alone on the mountain, Elijah's stay on Mount Horeb, and Paul's years in the Arabian Desert weren't wasted experiences; they were part of God's plan. Jesus said, ‘What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight' (Matthew 10:27 NIV). Notice two things in this Scripture: 1) It's in your worst moments that God gives you some of your best insights. 2) People will listen to you because you've ‘earned the right to speak.' So sit tight and let God teach you things which can only be learned in the dark.
Here are three more important lessons from the seven sons of Sceva: 1) Those around you aren't necessarily with you. Just because somebody hangs out with you, admires you, and tries to emulate you, doesn't mean they're with you. These men followed Paul, studying his every move and trying to do what he did. But they had the wrong motives. They were never ‘with' him at all! Are you concerned about losing certain people? Are you always trying to keep them happy? Do you wonder if you can make it in life without them? John writes, ‘They went out from us, but they were not of us' (1 John 2:19 NKJV). When God removes a person who doesn't belong in your life, trust Him; He knows what's best. 2) Greater numbers don't always mean greater effectiveness. These seven men together couldn't do what one Spirit-empowered apostle did. And remember, their father was a chief priest, so they knew how to ‘do church'. They fulfilled the Scripture: ‘Having a form of godliness, but denying its power.' 3) Success isn't as easy as it looks. Sceva's sons showed up towards the end of Paul's career. They weren't there in the beginning when he was humbled on the Damascus Road, or trained for three-and-a-half years in the Arabian Desert. These guys were looking for shortcuts. Just because someone writes a book about success, doesn't mean you can achieve overnight what took years of life experience on the part of the author. It's not that God can't give you instant success; it's that you need time, training, and in some cases a major overhaul to prepare you for it.
After the death of Mohammad in 632 the armies of Islam spilled out of the Arabian Desert and quickly began conquering everything in their path. They first encountered the mighty Romans to their west, and the ferocious Persians to their east, both of these great empires had been in existence for centuries beyond this new religion that was barely as old as a single lifetime. The Muslims took them both on at once, and defeated them both. They seized Byzantine land pushing the Romans back into Anatolia. They conquered all of Persia, expanding the young caliphate to India in the east. They then moved into North Africa taking Islam all the way to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. They even crossed the Mediterranean Sea into Europe, and conquered the Visigoths and nearly all of Iberia. The Muslims seemed invincible at this point, but after crossing the Pyrenees into France they were defeated by the Franks and chased back into Spain. How did this defeat of the Muslims in France potentially save Western Europe, and how would have a Muslim victory in France potentially changed the world as we know it today? What A Christian IsBy Tammy Lacock A Christian is one in whom Christ lives. As believers, our spirits are fixed in Christ. His Spirit is joined to our spirit making us one spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17). We stand perfect before God in Spirit because Christ is our new life; our old selves no longer live (Galatians 2:20). The Apostle Paul was the only man in the Bible who was raised up by Christ, Himself, to bring this knowledge to humanity. One man brought this knowledge to the world. Peter wouldn't be able to handle it. He knew Christ in the flesh and couldn't grasp the idea of Christ now living in him. John couldn't get a grasp on it until 30 years after Paul's death in his writings. After Paul's conversion on the way to Damascus, he spent at least three years proclaiming Christ; however, it wasn't until his revelation in the Arabian Desert that God “reveal(ed) His Son in me” (Galatians 1:16). From that point forward, Paul knew nothing else. In fact, he states in Philippians 3:8: “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.” Christ IN Him. A Christ-person. A Christian. From the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to the believers, Christ was living in them and yet not one of them knew it. It wasn't until God revealed it to Paul that this message started spreading to the churches through his epistles. In fact, most of his writings on Christ living in believers was done while he was in a Roman jail cell. As Christians, Christ occupies our Spirit. He's fixed there by God birthing His Son, the incorruptible seed, in us. We must be born again with Christ as our new life, our eternal life, to be a Christian. As Warren puts it, we are the temples, the tabernacles, the clay pots “chosen in Him before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4). Even though our clay pots are filthy and corrupted by sin, He so loved us that He came to live in us (John 3:16). The Holy Spirit, however, came to occupy our souls, where our ever-changing minds, hearts, and emotions reside. While we are perfect before God in Spirit, who we are to ourselves and to others comes out of our soul area. This is where the Holy Spirit works. Jesus said the “Spirit of Truth” will not speak of Himself but reveal what he has heard and what is to come (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit's greatest mission is to reveal the Christ who lives in each and every one of us who believes. He speaks to our minds and hearts. He is our teacher, our guide, our comforter. With His help in our souls, we express the Christ who now lives in us; we emanate His love, His strength, His peace, His righteousness, His very Life. He is life, the vine, where we as branches are joined to Him in Spirit and express Him. This is where Paul consistently reminds us that our minds must be renewed. We must suffer the death of our old selves so that we, too, can know the “excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord.” Getting to know Christ is all we need. Churches don't make Christians by anything we do or don't do. A Christian is a Christ-person, one in whom Christ lives. As believers, when He died, we died, too. When He arose, we arose, too, to a new life in Him. With the help of the Holy Spirit inhabiting our souls (minds, wills, and emotions), our life in Christ is a love affair in operation. Knowing Him and loving Him now is all we need.

Most of my podcasts are about normal, Everyday Heroes. But when you hear retired TWA Captain Bill Kirschner describe how he literally saved 4 people's lives, that’s when he went from Everyday to Real Hero! When you listen to Bill’s adventures as a pilot/instructor for Saudi Arabian Airlines, on temporary assignment from TWA, you'll be entertained and amazed at how turns the challenge of flying in a totally different cultural and geographic environment to his advantage. You'll also be inspired at how he not just survives but thrives for 8 years, flying in some of the most desolate, remote desert regions of the world; and that's just the beginning! When he wasn't flying out of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia he would hop on a Saudi airliner and fly to join his wife and kids where they rented a different villa every year in exotic places like southern Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. All this, while he was managing the Saudi Arabian Airline Boeing 707 pilot training program. Listen as he talks about training the Saudi pilots, whose memory of the Koran helped them to completely memorize the Boeing 707 flight manual! But that wasn't all that they needed to be a safe, competent pilot...For those of you who are here for the first time, it's great to have you onboard! Today Joining us is Lisa Tamati, a Professional Ultra Endurance athlete with more than 25 years experience running the toughest endurance events in the world. With over 140 ultra-marathons to her name and many expeditions under her belt Lisa is constantly pushing the limits of human endurance. She’s the author of two international best-selling running books, and is a highly sought after motivational speaker, run coach and mindset expert. She has completed the infamous badwater Ultramarathon twice in what is the hottest desert run on earth running totalling 217km. Insane, right? She has canoed down the Canadian Yukon, cycle toured through over 25 countries and has run thousands of kilometres through the Sahara Desert, the Arabian Desert, Jordan, the Moroccan desert as well the Chinese Gobi Desert and the Australian outback. Lisa now passionately shares her learnings on how to achieve the extraordinary and how to beat the odds and will help you shortcut the path to transforming your body, your fitness, your health and your wellbeing. One of her most recent books, Relentless, is probably one of the most heart-rendering books I’ve heard of in a long time. In 2016 Lisa’s mother Isobel Tamati suffered a massive aneurysm that left her fighting for her life. She had no speech, unable to sit, stand, walk or even move her limbs. Doctors told them that they had to prepare for the fact she wouldn’t have any quality of life ever again. Taking the power of the never-give-up mindset and getting educated on alternative health, Lisa was able to help her mom throughout a raft of therapies that weren’t offered by traditional medical professionals and 3 years later, Isobel was fully functioning again. It’s a story of just what the never quit mentality can do. It’s about never giving up and always pushing your limits despite the huge odds stacked against you. I love this message from the Health aspect, and the Endurance aspect, and I hope this inspires you as well in your journey to optimal health and performance. The novel coronavirus threatens life, business, and the economy. 11 years of U.S. economic expansion could end soon. (**The entire episode transcript is below. You can read along as you listen.) Closed businesses mean that supply chains are disrupted. This could make it difficult for flippers and value-add apartment projects. Travel, hospitality, and leisure business troubles mean that short-term rentals like AirBnB will have high vacancies. Short-term rentals cater to business travelers and vacationers - both vulnerable in this downturn. Long-term rentals are better positioned. As long as people are alive, they need a home. Mortgage interest rates have hit their lowest rate EVER since they’ve been tracked in 1971. The Fed made a 0.5% emergency rate cut. Expect more cuts. This punishes savers and rewards borrowers. Stocks recently fell more than 20% from their recent high; that's the definition of a bear market. Coronavirus’ effects are fast-moving and no one really knows the future. This is uncharted territory. With this in mind, I’d expect real estate to fare better than other asset classes. Also expect: Stronger: dollar, bonds, gold. Weaker: many stocks & businesses, short-term rentals, oil, silver. The unemployment rate will likely rise; I discuss what this means for your tenants. Low mortgage interest rates can be locked in for 30 years, outlasting the coronavirus pandemic. I’m your host, Keith Weinhold. The coronavirus, COVID-nineteen, has infected humans and financial markets too. This creates both problems and opportunities for you, the investor. Today, on Get Rich Education. Welcome to GRE. From Uruguay to the Ukraine to the UAE to the USA and across 188 nations worldwide, this is Get Rich Education. I’m your host, Keith Weinhold. Yeah, you’re back in that abundant place, where your QUALITY OF LIFE exceeds your cost of living. The novel coronavirus (COVID-nineteen) that began in Wuhan, China in November of last year when it transferred from animal to human is poised to affect the economy of every world nation and every U.S. state. It's not SARS or Zika. This transmits easily and it is perhaps 20x more deadly than the common flu. Some experts believe it's the worst outbreak in America since the Spanish flu of 1918. That was the worst pandemic of the 20th century. And you know what, it didn’t have to be this way ... with coronavirus. As my chief informant on the matter, Dr. Chris Martenson says, it didn’t have to be this way. Often placing the economy ahead of human life, health organizations and governments have often done a DEPLORABLE job of handling this, often understating the threat. The World Health Organization was even reluctant to acknowledge that the coronavirus is a global pandemic … which it surely has been for a long time. Well, they only acknowledged that five days ago. Well now that agencies weren’t preparing people sooner - coronavirus is poised to threaten even more people - which in turn, will make the economy even worse than if the threat had just been accurately represented in the first place. I’m going to focus on coronavirus’ likely effects on real estate and the other financial markets shortly. But let’s - you and I - outline this together first. The virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms for most people, like a fever and cough … … but it can progress to serious illness including pneumonia, especially in older adults and people with existing health problems. The World Health Organization says mild cases last about two weeks, while most patients with serious illness recover in about three to six weeks. Based on what I said earlier, consider the source there. My heart goes out to the victims of this - past, present, and future. The most credible source that I follow thinks that the virus will reach its peak in the U.S. 1 to 3 months from now. I've followed this story closely since January and if you receive our Get Rich Education newsletter, you’ve known for a while that my favorite source of TRUSTWORTHY coronavirus information was and still is: the Peak Prosperity YouTube Channel, which Chris Martenson hosts. In fact, I’ve mentioned that resource in our GRE newsletter for you twice - the first time was back on February 6th. So if you get the Get Rich Education Newsletter, you’ve had plenty of time to get in front of this. You know, it’s interesting. I had Chris Martenson on the show here earlier this year and we talked about “The Fed” printing money. That was right before coronavirus literally went viral. Before I tell you about the affects on your real estate - both good and bad - let’s establish a baseline here. Coronavirus is threatening because it has a substantially higher R-naught value than the flu. If the R-naught value is greater than 1, that means that one infected person will spread the virus to MORE THAN one person then the disease can spread. The way a virus dies out is for it’s R-naught value to be less than 1. Then, one infected person, on average spreads it to fewer than one person. Well, the common flu has an R-naught value of about 1.3. Coronavirus (COVID-nineteen) is believed to have an R-naught value of more than 3 and maybe even more than 6. So it spreads easily. It spreads asymptomatically - and that’s bad. There’s no vaccine available - and most believe it’ll take a while to develop one. And, you can find resources elsewhere on how to prevent the spread like social distancing, avoiding gatherings, and lots of handwashing. But because this is an investing platform and I don't have a degree in pathology or epidemiology, and much of what I just told you there, I learned myself in the past month or two … Let me now get into my lane: how do I think coronavirus will affect your money and your real estate? Well, it probably already has. Businesses are closing. Colleges have suspended classes. Many events are being cancelled or postponed. SXSW in Austin, Texas was one of the first major EVENTS to be cancelled in the U.S. March Madness basketball won’t have any crowd there. We’ve got an entire country - Italy - that’s essentially shut down. When businesses close and more people work from home, this disrupts supply chains. That COULD include less supply of sheet rock or faucet handles or whatever - and affect value-add properties because so much building material comes from China. It could be a tougher time to be a flipper then if you’re about to start a rehab or if you’re in the middle of a rehab. If you're upgrading an apartment building, that could slow things down. You need materials. This may or may not create disruptions for turnkey property providers. We’ll see. You’re in a better position if you’re a prospective turnkey buyer waiting on a rehab - maybe that’ll create a delay until your property is ready. Maybe it won’t. China accounts for nearly 30% of world manufacturing. But importantly, they also make component goods for finished products. An American car can't be finished if it doesn't have the battery and exhaust system from China. Virtually every major car company has a component made in China. Now, I see conflicting reports of whether some previously closed Chinese businesses have really come back online or not. We need to learn more there. Travel, hospitality, and leisure businesses are already hurting. Now, where hospitality meets real estate, we’ve got hotel rooms, Bed & Breakfasts and short-term rental platforms like AirBnB and VRBO. Like I’ve said before, and not too long ago on the show at all - is that these short-term rentals are not very recession-resistant. That’s because short-term rentals cater to two main groups of people - business travelers and vacationers. That’s who occupies those properties. Well, what are business travelers and vacationers doing right now? They are postponing travel or cancelling travel left-and-right due to coronavirus concerns. How great would you feel about owning AirBnBs right now? Short-term rentals like AirBnBs are not as recession-resistant as long-term rentals. Just a couple, three months ago, it probably sounded different to you when I mentioned that short-term rentals aren’t very recession-resistant. Because perhaps you were still feeling good about our 11-year-long economic expansion. But those same words probably sound and feel different to you now that some think that a coronavirus-induced recession could even be imminent - though that remains to be seen. Also, expect big hits to: chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. Apple Corporation is so dependent on Chinese manufacturing for their iPhone. That’s the bad news. Now, let’s talk about the good news. Mortgage interest rates have hit all-time lows - yes, lower than their lows that they hit in 2012, shortly after coming off of the Great Recession. All-time lows - as long as Freddie Mac has been tracking them - which is since 1971. They’ve never been lower than they are now. Today, you can get a rate in the low 3s for primary residences, I’ve even heard of a few people closing 30-year fixed amortizing loans for less than 3%. Just astoundingly good. And of course, investor loans are often about ¾% higher than those. The Fed has been pumping tens of billions, even hundreds of billions into the system lately … for bank liquidity. The Fed's emergency interest rate cut of 0.5% two weeks ago is first time we've seen such a move since 2008. That 2008 cut was in the wake of The Great Recession - that was the Lehman Brothers emergency one-half-of-one-percent cut. Just a quick economics primer if you’re a new listener - lower interest rates for loans stoke the economy because they make you more willing to borrow & spend. Interest rate cuts help the investor class like you, and not poor people. That’s just the truth behind who cuts actually help. It’s you! It helps the Get Rich Education listener - you again - even more because we’re such strong proponents of responsible and sensible borrowing here. Now, note that lower rates don’t help contain the diseas. If your grandparent gets sick, Jerome Powell’s decisions aren’t going to help that. Right, how low would rates have to be to get you to travel to China or Italy tomorrow? By the way, after the rate cut, President Trump was not satisfied with the amount of easing and cutting. “More easing and cutting!” is what he tweeted following the central bank’s announcement. But realize, of course, that long-term mortgage rates don’t move on that Fed Funds rate. The Fed controls the short-term rate - though there’s generally still a correlation there. Long-term mortgage rates - like the ones that you really care about for real estate - they move with bond yields. Now, bonds are like the boring can of beans or soup in the finance world - they’re safe and they’re stable. Vigorous bond-buying makes bond prices go up and makes bond yields go down. So this strong bond-buying … this safe have ... has dropped the 10-Year Treasury Note yield below 1% for the first time ever … and it’s fallen substantially below 1% in just a fantastic fall off the table. OK, so they’re below 1% - and that’s a rate that was unthinkable just a few months ago. Do you know what the average spread is between this bond yield and the 30-year mortgage rate? On average, mortgage interest rates hover 1.8% above this rate, so you can see how low we could be going. I think that the historic spread will widen, but despite the fact that we now have record - I mean all-time record low mortgage rates, there’s a good chance that they’ll go a little lower yet. This is great for your new real estate buys. Refinance activity is surging right now. But back to short-term rates that the Fed influences - more cuts there seem imminent too. The next one could happen at the Fed's regularly scheduled meeting, which happens tomorrow and the next day. So you’ll hear an announcement from The Fed this Wednesday about their rate cut decision. The Fed loaded up with dry powder in 2018 when they raised rates, so that they can lower them at a time like this. Every time they cut the rate like this, it punishes savers and rewards borrowers. No one knows if rates will go negative - and only a few places in the world have those right now: places like Japan, Denmark, and Switzerland. We’ve never had them in America. U.S. stock market investors are getting killed with all this uncertainty. Indices are whipsawing with volatility. Fear pushes stocks around, but not RE. The U.S. stock market dropped 3% in just minutes when a report came out that in CA, a large number of people were exposed to coronavirus, but weren’t. Last week was the first time that major stock indices dipped into bear market territory. That’s defined as a 20% loss from a recent high. There was one recent trading day - just one day - where the S&P dropped 7%, triggering a circuit breaker, which paused trading for everyone for 15 minutes. Yeah, now we’re talking about all these automatic fail-safes. When the stock market loses so much, so soon, there’s a pause in trading. By the way, the way it works is that if the S&P had declined 13% in a day, trading would’ve paused another 15 minutes. 20% in a day, and everyone would have gone home for the day. That’s how it works. Yeah, they put those circuit breakers in place after 1987’s Black Monday, when the market fell between 22 and 23%. Stock drops are always sickening,l and if you’re within 5 years of retirement, stock drops are really scary. I’ve told you before that I haven’t owned any stock, mutual fund, or ETF since 2014 and that’s still true today. Being in something stable like real estate has rarely felt as good as it has lately. And you know something, “volatility” is a funny word. It seems like “volatility” used to mean something that changes rapidly, and anymore, it’s morphed into something that only means a change for the worse. Warren Buffett says, "The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient." I believe that. I’d even say that - not just the stock market - but just that, “MARKETS OVERALL are devices for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.” Real estate investors like us are more patient. There’s no flash-selling in real estate. It might take you 30, 60 days or more to sell a property … or to buy a property. I’d expect to see a stronger U.S. dollar because the world views it as a safe haven asset. I expect this to be a nice tailwind for real estate too, because the world views U.S. real estate as a safe haven asset in times of uncertainty. Gold should be strong with coronavirus concerns. That’s easy to say, since gold is the classic safe haven asset. But remember that gold might not APPEAR stronger to Americans if the dollar strengthens. That’s how it works. Because if gold goes up 10% and the dollar also gets 10% stronger, well then it takes just as many dollars to buy the gold. The dollar-denominated gold price would look the same then. I’ve read that a number of experts predict silver prices to rise on coronavirus concerns, but then I don’t see any sound rationale for them thinking this. I disagree. I would NOT expect silver to rise. That’s because silver has more industrial use than gold and more industrial slowdown is expected. Let's talk more about your income properties in this coronavirus environment. Though I'm speculating now, what if your tenant is required to self-quarantine at home and they lose their income? This is not far-fetched. Washington state officials were really some of the first in the U.S. to recommend that workers stay at home when they suggested that Seattle-area residents work from home. More & more people can work from home today than anytime in modern history. But when we’re talking about your tenants, it's unlikely that all of your tenants will lose substantial income. Now, there are some positions where people can’t work from home so well, like mechanics, janitors, chefs and wait staff, sure. Let’s consider that ... The current unemployment rate is 3.5%. I’m really speculating here, but if 1 in 10 of your tenants is both laid off & without income, that’s a 10% increase in unemployment. That would be huge. That would be like the unemployment rate going from 3.5% all the way up to 13.5% - which seems unfathomable! And yes, realize that if 1 in 10 people were laid off it wouldn’t exactly make the 3.5% unemployment rate shoot up to 13.5%. It doesn’t exactly work that way with how it’s calculated. But, I think you get my point. If 1 in 10 of your tenants were both laid off and without employment, that would be massive. So keep that in perspective. Even 1 in 10 would be a lot. Last week, Trump floated the idea of a payroll tax cut, which I don’t think would do much of anything to help - and also, extending paid leave which seems more helpful. Companies, especially those in the service sector, are under pressure to provide paid sick leave to workers who may not be in a financial position to take time off. Wal-Mart and McDonald’s put in safeguards for their employees. Congress might step in. A bill has been introduced that would require companies of all sizes to provide paid sick leave. Could your overall rental income go down? Maybe, though you have to speculate quite a bit to even think that 1 in 10 would go without an income. So that’s a maybe. But does your mortgage interest rate go down? Definitely. It already has. What about you? If you lose your job, you need multiple income streams ... from places like your rentals. And if 9 out of 10 … or 10 out of 10 of your tenants still have jobs, you probably still have that income stream because you set up your life for multiple income streams if you’ve been listening to this show & acting. What about you - what about your job? Well ... The lower your financial freedom, the higher the risk. The more income streams you’ve built, the better off you are. What about your job? The lower your financial freedom, the higher the risk. Another benefit of a paid sick leave movement gaining momentum, is that “When people gain access to paid sick leave, the spread of the flu decreases.” Because they’re more likely to stay home then. So that makes paid sick leave seem like more of reality. It’s important in this situation that when you have people who have symptoms and don’t feel well, that they do not go to work and spread diseases to slow the infection rate and buy time for public health officials to develop a vaccine. Let’s look at oil prices - because that’s a substantial input to inflation and oil is a real proxy for what’s going on in the economy. Oil prices have crumbled faster than a Nature Valley Granola bar. And that’s even before a coronavirus-induced slowdown. What’s happened, is that with President Trump in the White House and the Republican Party controlling the Senate, environmental activists have shifted their focus from pressuring the government to pressuring the private sector instead. Since JPMorgan is such a big financier of the fossil fuel industry, activists have really turned up the heat on them and other big banks to stop financing oil projects. That’s significant - on top of a slowdown in the economy - if fewer goods need to be produced and shipped, it uses less energy and then there’s less demand for oil. Low oil prices are generally good for consumers but bad for producer countries. In the U.S., low oil prices are not good for real estate in areas like west Texas, parts of Louisiana, and Alaska. But, of course, there’s the flip side of all this. At some point, low stock and oil prices mean that bargain hunters come in to float the market again at some point. In fact, billionaire investor Sam Zell recently made remarks that oil looks like a “buy low” opportunity. So let’s look at the bottom line - real estate is still quite well-positioned as long as you’re in residential, long-term rentals that you bought for cash flow. Elsewhere: Bonds win, gold wins, the US dollar wins, many business sectors - like the ones I mentioned - lose, stocks lose, oil loses, and silver loses. Of course, let me qualify all that by telling you that that’s my outlook and that we don’t have any recent precedent for anything else like the coronavirus. No one REALLY knows. That’s my take. -------- If you happen to be a new listener to the show, you may not know much about me. I’ve authored many written articles for both Forbes and the Rich Dad Advisors. Business Insider recently wrote two stories about me and Get Rich Education - and how I’ve helped everyday people create financial freedom through real estate investing. That’s what I do here! I’m a current member of the Forbes Real Estate Council. But maybe the more important things I can tell you are that I’ve been the host of this show every week - and I mean EVERY week continuously since 2014 - you can count on me to keep showing up here. I own three real estate trademarks. In 2017, I authored an international best-selling book on how real estate makes ordinary people wealthy. And perhaps the most important thing I can tell you is that I invest right alongside you, from the exact same providers that we talk about here. Though I travel pretty well, I’ve lived my entire life in the United States, dividing this life of mine between two states - Pennsylvania and Alaska. I have spent the last 2-and-a-half weeks visiting four countries - the United Arab Emirates, Oman, India, and Sri Lanka. Though I’m a real estate guy, I have a degree in geography so I like to travel. One of the coolest things I did is sandboarding on a sand dune in the Arabian Desert there in the United Arab Emirates. I couldn't find another interested person, so I did that activity all by myself. Going high in the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, was a “must” while we were there. Muscat, Oman has some surprisingly beautiful sights, and buildings, and mosques that we toured. Really clean-looking there in the nation of Oman. Immersing myself in Indian culture is something that was really novel to me - the food, the way that - the women especially in some of these outlying provinces like Goa and Kerala, India - the way the women dress in such colorful outfits ... just if they’re walking to the market to buy some guava. Such an exotic feeling there. The coolest thing that I did is visiting the world's largest slum. It’s called Dharavi and it’s in Mumbai, India. It's just sooo different from my world. There are actually bustling little businesses inside the slums there - from plastic recycling to pottery. And the Indian people were so welcoming - even in the slums - which was just amazing to me. As I like to say, seeing poverty enriched me. :o) I’ve got more on coronavirus and your money straight ahead. A fair bit of what I’ve discussed here about coronavirus and your money and your real estate, is material that I sent in our wealth-building Get Rich Education newsletter about 12 days ago. The newsletter is a nice, written supplement to the podcast. Of course, you can unsubscribe at any time - but very few do. My wealth-building newsletter is something that you can subscribe to … for free … at GetRichEducation.com You’ll be glad you did. You’re listening to Get Rich Education. _____________________________________ Welcome back to Get Rich Education. I’m your host, Keith Weinhold. It’s unknown whether coronavirus will tilt the economy into a recession or not. It’s too soon to know. I’ll keep you updated on that here, of course. For you, I think it helps to listen to a perspective that’s invested through a recession before. I’ve been investing directly in real estate since 2002 - which was before the Great Recession. I made a major income property purchase in 2007 - which was just within that recession (in fact, I mentioned that four-plex purchase last week on the show). And I kept buying in 2010, as the recession wound down - and in 2012. Well, what’s the common thread there? It’s that I continued to prosper because I bought for cash flow first. It’s that I bought in multiple geographic markets for diversification - a recession-resilient strategy. Residential rentals that were leased to long-term tenants. People need a place to live. And as long as they're alive, a virus is not going to change that. But see, a virus might mean people stop using vacation rentals and stop taking business trips and stop going to the mall and stop going to the office to work. We’re talking about HOMES. Well, we could soon have more people working from … home. Not office, not retail, not short-term rentals. They all look vulnerable now. And by the way, that doesn’t mean I’m a permabear on those asset types. There’s always opportunity. But recession-resistence just isn’t one of their qualities. I’m not saying short-term rentals never make an ounce of sense or anything like that. Some companies are basically using the coronavirus as an experiment for that moment when “working remotely could broadly replace working in-person.” Some people think that time is coming. This can ACCELERATE THE - you’re seeing the acronym “WFM” around a lot more now - the “work from home” movement. As people get more used to using workflow software and using platforms like Slack or Trello from home because they HAVE to, you know, when coronavirus passes - and it will - some might ask, now why return to an office all? With each passing day, the camp of people believing that this is all fear-mongering loses troops. We’ll see if the peak for coronavirus will be that 1-3 months from now like some experts predict. That’s the latest I’ve heard from credible sources. But again, we really don’t know. That’s why I like to focus on things that we do know. So let’s focus on what we do know now: The coronavirus threat will pass sometime. We just don’t know when. But it will pass. A second thing we know is that people will continue to need a home - a place to live. And thirdly, mortgage interest rates have hit their lowest level in American history. So with those being the things that we DO know - this can be QUITE an opportunity to not only lock up investment property buys at historically low rates, but potentially, do that cash-out refinance of your existing home if you think that that’s in your best interest. Procrastinators often aren’t rewarded. But, hey, maybe you are this time with rates being this low - or maybe you really weren’t because you had dead equity accumulated in one place for too long. With borrowing rates underneath the basement, a lot of homeowners are racing to lock in cheaper loans. I think we could see low to mid 3% rates on investment properties, and below 3% on primary residences. Mortgage refinancing applications have more than doubled in volume from the same time last year - that’s according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. And industry records are being shattered. Bloomberg reported that : The country’s No. 1 mortgage lender, Quicken Loans, recently had its busiest day for mortgage applications in its 35-year history. United Wholesale Mortgage approved a single-day record of $2.5 billion in loans. These stories are all over the place. The thing is, to process this flood of applications you’re going to need a lot of people. So the mortgage industry is on a hiring spree to take advantage of the gold rush. Our preferred mortgage provider is doing a lot of volume now as well - RidgeLendingGroup.com - that’s R-I-D-G-E. Just calculate your ROI just from principal reduction alone at these low rates. It’s pretty remarkable. I think that the thing that you need to remember is … that long-term thinking. "Investing should not be about a MOMENT; it should be about a PROCESS OVER TIME.” Some of the classic problems with GETTING STARTED in real estate are ones that I’ve helped solve for you here. I think that Problem 1 for people is that they feel like it costs a small fortune to GET started. Problem 2 is FINDING the property. Often times, it’s because properties in your area don’t make sense with your 20% down payment and 80% loan. I’ve really helped solve both of those problems. By selecting investor-advantaged markets, with down payment & closing costs you can get started with as low as … about $18K - and they’re in areas where the numbers make sense … all at the website … GREturnkey.com In fact, at the top of the page there, there’s that 8-step flowchart where I walk you through the process. You start by getting pre-approved for a mortgage - I even suggest where - and then reading an investor due diligence report … … all the way through to viewing properties, making an offer, getting your third-party inspection, appraisal, signing your Management Agreement, Closing on the Property … and then the really good part - years of owning and collecting the rent. It’s rarely been easier - though the process still takes time & you need to supply your mortgage loan underwriter with plenty of documentation. That’s all outlined at the same place where I buy my property: GREturnkey.com What about some current highlights over there? Well, it’s a great time to invest in Florida for a lot of reasons - you’ll find providers in Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville. Our Orlando provider was recently added - they’re now - and they have NEW CONSTRUCTION - yes, newly-built, never-before occupied - single-family homes and duplexes … and they’re in locations from the Space Coast to The Villages, through Orlando, and nearly out to Tampa. We’ve got another new provider on the page if you’re looking for more cash flow and less appreciation than what you’d typically get on new construction, and that is in … Iowa. Yeah, I’m proud to introduce the Des Moines, Iowa market to you today. It’s a model of midwestern stability and Des Moines has an MSA population of 600 to 700,000 people. Des Moines has seen an average 3.6% appreciation over the last twenty years. I think of it as a cash flow market. A lot of times, you might be buying for, say a 4 or 6 or 8 or 10% cash-on-cash return today. If you have a little more patience and you want to potentially double your CCR, then, rather than the turnkey model - where you buy a property that’s already renovated - you might prefer the BRRRR model. That stands for Buy – Renovate – Rent – Refinance – and Recycle Model - recycling your money to re-use right away. That BRRRR model is suited to Baltimore, Maryland - within commuter distance to Washington, D.C. at just a fraction of the price. All those markets - including the new turnkey markets with inventory TODAY in Orlando and Des Moines, plus the Baltimore BRRRR market, plus that 8-step flowchart that helps serve as a roadmap for you are all in one convenient place - all on one page - at GREturnkey.com Market uncertainty is a short-term phenomena. But when you lock up these lowest mortgage interest rates in American history - they can last you 30 years. When the dust settles from any current news, you know what, you’ve still going to have your mortgage rate. Stay safe. Enjoy these historically low mortgage interest rates … I sure am. Take action at GREturnkey.com I’m Keith Weinhold and I’ll be back next week to help you build your wealth. Don’t quit your daydream!
Neville Wakefield and Aya Alireza talk with Lita Albuquerque, the California based artist who brought her fictive character NAJMA (Arabic for “star”), to AlUla, a birthplace of astronomy. The blue, veiled lady, subtitled She Placed 1000 Suns on the Transparent Overlays of Space, sits atop a petroglyph, surveying the valley and blue pools placed to correspond with the stars above. After all, “NAJMA” is “a 21st century female astronaut” with “a mission to reteach the inhabitants of the earth about their relationship to the stars.” Albuquerque also explains why she could not miss being in Saudi Arabia at this time.
In addition to Paul's experience when he encountered Jesus on the Damascus road, he learned from Jesus in the Arabian Desert, and was taken into heaven and given revelations too deep for words. Paul was also given a thorn in his flesh, a messenger from Satan. No one knows exactly what this thorn was, but it is clear God used it to keep Paul humble and to use Paul's weakness to show His strength. God likes to demonstrate His adequacy through our inadequacy.
Number 5 is Alive! We Hit the Trail, Explore the Arabian Desert, and Strap on a Kilt. Brandon stumbles along the trail with Dusty Bottoms Trail Runners, a drinking group with a running problem. Then he speaks with a former petroleum engineering manager from Kuwait who now inspires others to get out and see the wonders of the Arabian Peninsula and around the world. Finally, Paul speaks with a Scotsman who tosses cabers in Highland Games, deflects pucks on the ice but can’t deflect the question – What is under his kilt? To get you pumped for our trip to the UK we picked a Scottish Ale from Belhaven called Wee Heavy. That and our usual craic so have a listen while enjoying your next pint. And not just win … but plunder them, reaping great resources! No, I am NOT talking about the Ezekiel 38 ‒ 39 victory. I am talking about a conquest possibly before that: one that could happen at any time. Actually, there will be at least three (3) major Middle East conflicts that involve Israel in the future: Conquest over Muslim forces in Middle East; Ezekiel 38 ‒ 39 victory; and, Battle of Armageddon. NOTE: It is possible that the above two [#2 and #3] may be incorporated in one war; but two different conflicts (battles) when the Mashiach appears. That is, Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39 could be the same event combination as Armageddon. They both include eartquakes and hail. However, I believe they will be separate conflicts for the reasons I present below. CONQUEST OVER MUSLIM ENTITIES Most people familiar with Bible prophecy realize there will be a conflict in the Middle East—fought in Israel—where G-d Himself will be “set apart” in the eyes of the goyim: the nations. When it is over, the whole world will realize that the conflict has been won by the LORD G-d. And, probably many of the people familiar with this prophecy in Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39 realize that it is NOT the same conflict as the Battle of Armageddon. This fact is very clear in that: THE WEAPONS USED ARE DIFFERENT In Ezekiel 38, G-d sends earthquake(s), overflowing rain, hailstones and fire … plus disease and blood … upon Israel's enemies. Also, Israel's enemy goes into confusion and fights with each other. In Ezekiel 39, 83% [five-sixths] of Israel's enemies are either destroyed or overcome. And [one-sixth] 17% of the enemy forces are sent back to their home lands. In the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation Chapter 16) we read of a great earthquake affecting the whole earth and hailstones the size of 100 pounds. However, there is NO mention of disease (pestilence) and blood; nor of fire and burning sulphur like in Ezekiel 38. THE ENEMIES INVOLVED ARE DIFFERENT In Ezekiel 38 and 39, we see that the focus of the conflict is while Israel is at peace in their land … “Brought back out of the nations dwelling safely.” [Ezekiel 38:8] Also, the commanding enemy forces who attack Israel are from the North: parts of Russia, Turkey, Iran (all North of Jerusalem) with some allies in the North-East African region. In the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16) Israel is NOT at peace … and we read that the whole world is involved as Israel's enemies. It appears that this fits the time frame of “Jacob's Trouble” during the last 42 months of the Great Tribulation: the last half of Daniel the Prophet's heptad of seven years. [Daniel 9:27 and Matthew 24:15] “Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. Then they gathered the kings [of the whole world] together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.” [Brit Chadashah / Revelation 16:13-14,16] OTHER CONSIDERATIONS In addition, when the conflict of Ezekiel 38 and 39 happens, Israel is at peace in the land with great resources. Even a casual reading of Ezekiel Chapter 38 shows that Israel’s great wealth will be what draws the powers from the North to come down against her. This brings to light another question: Where—and when—did Israel come by this great wealth?! The Middle East conflict … the Israeli-Arab dispute … is at its essence thousands of years old. It is a spiritual conflict: the political aspects of which are merely the symptoms. The scriptures do show us that there will be a final Israeli-Arab war. ISAIAH CHAPTER 11 "Then it will happen on that day that the Lord will again acquire with His hand a second time the remnant of His people, who will remain, from Assyria, from Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt, from Ethiopia, from Iran, from Babylonia, from Syria, and from the coastlands bordering the [Mediterranean] Sea. And He will lift up a signal for the nations. And He will assemble the scattered ones of Israel, and will gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth." [Isaiah 11:11-12] NOTICE: After the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the Versailles Treaty of 1919 … but especially after 1948 when Israel was declared as a nation … many Jews emigrated to Israel -- to their homeland -- as a Nation of People: this was their FIRST regathering from their dispersion among the Gentile nations (the Goyim). However, in Isaiah Chapter 11 we see that G-d will regather His People a second time. Could this "second regathering" be when Messiah appears? Or, before? In Isaiah Chapter 11, verses 13 through 16, we see that: Israel will spoil the Islamic nations from the West to the East: from the Philistines in the West to Ammon and Moab in Jordan in the East. Again, direction is from Jerusalem. [Isaiah 11:14] The mouth of the Egyptian sea will be dried up. This has never happened. [Isaiah 11:15] See also Isaiah Chapter 19:5-8. There will be a highway of travel from Iraq through Syria and extending to Egypt. [Isaiah 11:16] See also Isaiah Chapter 19:23. In Isaiah Chapter 11, verses 12-16, we read a description of a war that will happen BEFORE Messiah comes to earth again (the second time). The first 11 verses tell us about Messiah's return and his rule of peace on earth. Verses 12-16 (the description of war) cannot happen during this time because Messiah's reign is characterized by peace. Another distinctive feature of the prophecy in verses 12-16 is that the war therein described has NOT happened historically. It has not happened yet! A war between Israel and much of the Middle East will happen, not just bordering Arab states like Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. They (that is, the children of Israel ... both Ephraim and Judah) will "fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines (Palestinians) to the west." In context Israel will strike against Egypt and Iraq (Assyria) and "plunder the sons of the East." Israel will control these nations, and evidently, their wealth as a result of the plundering. Etymologically, the "people of the East" MAY include other Arab nations. It is very evident here in this passage ... see verse 14 ... that Israel will control the East Bank of Jordan (Ammon, Moab, and Edom). This happened in Joshua's time and it has NOT happened SINCE the days of Isaiah. This is a future prophecy that WILL happen! It is quite probable that the devastation of terrorist groups like Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Hamas, Fatah, Al-Qaeda and ISIS will be accomplished during this conflict. It may be one of the factors—if not the primary factor—that actually precipitates the conflict. Actually, many of the citizens in these Muslim nations may be glad Israel wins this conflict to deliver them from the hands of terrorist groups and leadership. So now we know what the “hook” is that God uses to draw the powers from the North: it is Israel's great wealth! The LORD says to the Northern powers: “I will turn you back, and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you forth …” ‒ Ezekiel 38:4 The Northern powers' leader will say: “I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, To take a spoil, and to take a prey ... upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations.” – Ezekiel 38:11-12 The Northern powers described in Ezekiel 38-39 are parts of Russia, Turkey, Iran (the North of Jerusalem) with allies in the North-East African region. Where—and when—does Israel achieve the great wealth that God will use to draw the powers from the North against her? Remember, Isaiah Chapter Eleven verse 14 tells us, “Israel will strike against Egypt and Assyria (Iraq and Syria) and "plunder the sons of the East." Israel will control these nations, and evidently, their wealth as a result of the plundering. Notice, also, that these entities that are conquered by Israel are ALL presently Muslim nations. PSALM 83 In Psalm 83 we see what MAY BE a parallel description of Isaiah Chapter Eleven—possibly—in more detail as it pertains to the parties involved. Remember, the Book of Isaiah was written more recently, around 750 B.C.E … while Psalm 83 was written about 1,000 B.C.E. However, the Spirit of G-d can use writers, including prophets, at different times of writing to make declarations concerning the same events: even future. “Keep not silence, O G-d: hold not your peace, and be not still, O G-d. For, behold, your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate you have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against your people (Israel) and consulted against your hidden ones. They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.’ For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against you: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have helped the children of Lot. Selah.” [Psalm 83:1-8] For a description of the cognate terms listed in the above passage and their current identity, the following will help: The tabernacles, or tents, of Edom are Israel’s traditional enemies: the Palestinians and other political Arab allies: Gaza, the West Bank and Golan Heights. Also, part(s) of Jordan. Esau represents Mount Seir (in Jordan) from the Dead Sea south to the Red Sea (Eilat and Gulf of Aqaba). The Ishmaelites were not confined to the descendants of the son of Abraham and Hagar, but refer to the desert tribes east of the Jordan River, in general, like "the children of the east" (Judges 7:12) … but also in the Arabian Desert. The Gebalites were predominantly in or near the area of Lebanon. (Joshua 13:15) The Hagarenes: Hagar was Abraham’s Egyptian maid who gave birth to his first child, Ishmael (the son of the ‘flesh,’ not the ‘promise.’). Hagar gave her son, Ishmael, to an Egyptian wife so that the Ishmaelites,or Hagarenes, of Gilead and Moab were three-quarters (75%) Egyptian. Asshur represents the ancient confines of Assyria (present day Syria and Iraq). NOTICE #1: The people groups and nations listed in Psalm 83 who want Israel’s destruction are ALL Muslim entities. NOTICE #2: Some of the inhabitants of these geopolitical areas are Jewish and some are real Christians. G-d knows WHO are His People and HOW to deliver them. This is obvious when He knew HOW to separate Lot from the destruction of Sodom. (Torah: Genesis Chapter 19) In Isaiah 11:14 we read that Israel is going to experience a major conquest over Muslim nations in the Middle East and plunder them... and not just win, but plunder their resources. “But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west; Together they shall plunder the people of the East; They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab; And the people of Ammon shall obey them.” [Isaiah 11:14] Will this happen before the battle described in Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39? Is this where Israel gathers great wealth that is the “hook” which G-d uses to draw down the military forces from the North to attack Israel … which battle Israel wins hands down because the LORD G-d fights for her? Ezekiel Chapter 38 tells us that when the power forces from the North invade Israel … “Israel is at peace in their land ...” Brought back out of the nations dwelling safely." Notice again … Israel will be at peace in their land. Brought back out of the nations [after 1948] ...AND ... dwelling safely! With great wealth and resources. [Ezekiel 38:13] ADDENDUM: If there is NOT a conflict BEFORE the battle described in Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39 where Israel defeats and plunders Muslim entities in the Middle East—if Isaiah 11:14 happens at a different time—we still know that Israel will have great wealth that G-d uses as a “hook” to draw the forces from the North against her. This wealth could derive from oil, technological innovation, or mineral discoveries. Read (or listen to) my teaching on G-d, Geopolitics and Gold. One-third of the earth's surface is classified as desert. The writer William Atkins has travelled to eight of the world's hottest, driest places. He tells Andrew Marr about these forbidding, inhuman landscapes. The Arabian Desert lies mostly in Saudi Arabia but crosses borders from Egypt to Qatar, UAE to Oman. The economic analyst Jane Kinninmont looks at how this shared landscape affects regional politics and culture. In the 1950s deserts were the preferred places for Britain and America to test their nuclear bombs in secret. The science journalist Fred Pearce explores the human ingenuity - and human error - that has fuelled the atomic age. Producer: Katy Hickman.
A New York City native with almost 20 years of experience in the publishing industry working on recognized titles such as Elle, Elle Décor, and JFK Jr's magazine, George, Lisa Loverro suddenly found herself a victim of the recession in 2008 when she lost her job as Managing Editor for Latina Magazine.
Imagine you get the chance to go on a Grand Adventure … walking across the Arctic to the North Pole, or walking to the South Pole, or maybe climbing to the very top of Mount Everest. Which adventure would you choose? If you’re Adrian Hayes, you pick all three, and then do all three in world record time. Mr. Hayes has held the Three Poles Challenge world speed record, after he walked to the North Pole, and the South Pole, and climbed Mount Everest—in nineteen months and three days. It’s called the Three Poles Challenge because explorers try to reach the two farthest-apart points on earth, and the very highest point. Mr. Hayes tried out lots of different jobs on the way to becoming an adventurer. He worked as a bricklayer, a farmer, and a builder’s worker. He sang and played guitar in a rock band. He was a paramedic with the Special Air Services before going to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. As a British officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas, he served in Hong Kong and Brunei, and later, with the Royal Army of Oman. And he learned to speak Arabic and Nepali. After leaving military service and working as a sales director, Mr. Hayes began his climbing and trekking adventures. He followed up the Three Poles Challenge by crossing 1,600 kilometers of the Arabian Desert, on foot and on camel. This area is called the Empty Quarter and it’s the largest “sea” of sand in the world. In 2014, he and his team reached the top of K-2, the world’s second tallest mountain. K-2 “was my biggest challenge,” he says, because it is “way steeper” than nearby peaks, and its weather conditions are much worse. Climbing is his favorite adventure, he adds, because you’re in a different world. You have to stay really focused and think only of your next move. Mr. Hayes is the first Briton and only the third person in the world to reach the summit of the two highest mountains and to trek to both the North and South poles. His advice for kids who wonder what adventures they might have? “Write down your goals for the year,” a few months at a time. Figure out what your skills are. And if you’re not sure, ask your teachers or parents!

Into the Empty Quarter is an adventure film that follows Leon McCarron's journey through a vast region of the Arabian Desert. Beginning in Salalah Oman with teammate Alastair Humphreys, the two pulled a heavy cart containing their supplies for 1,000 miles to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Their adventure was inspired by the British explorer Wilfred Thesiger who wrote about his crossing of the desert in the book Arabian Sands. Yahweh — God of the Hebrews (1052.1) 96:0.1 IN CONCEIVING of Deity, man first includes all gods, then subordinates all foreign gods to his tribal deity, and finally excludes all but the one God of final and supreme value. The Jews synthesized all gods into their more sublime concept of the Lord God of Israel. The Hindus likewise combined their multifarious deities into the “one spirituality of the gods” portrayed in the Rig-Veda, while the Mesopotamians reduced their gods to the more centralized concept of Bel-Marduk. These ideas of monotheism matured all over the world not long after the appearance of Machiventa Melchizedek at Salem in Palestine. But the Melchizedek concept of Deity was unlike that of the evolutionary philosophy of inclusion, subordination, and exclusion; it was based exclusively on creative power and very soon influenced the highest deity concepts of Mesopotamia, India, and Egypt. (1052.2) 96:0.2 The Salem religion was revered as a tradition by the Kenites and several other Canaanite tribes. And this was one of the purposes of Melchizedek’s incarnation: That a religion of one God should be so fostered as to prepare the way for the earth bestowal of a Son of that one God. Michael could hardly come to Urantia until there existed a people believing in the Universal Father among whom he could appear. (1052.3) 96:0.3 The Salem religion persisted among the Kenites in Palestine as their creed, and this religion as it was later adopted by the Hebrews was influenced, first, by Egyptian moral teachings; later, by Babylonian theologic thought; and lastly, by Iranian conceptions of good and evil. Factually the Hebrew religion is predicated upon the covenant between Abraham and Machiventa Melchizedek, evolutionally it is the outgrowth of many unique situational circumstances, but culturally it has borrowed freely from the religion, morality, and philosophy of the entire Levant. It is through the Hebrew religion that much of the morality and religious thought of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Iran was transmitted to the Occidental peoples. 1. Deity Concepts Among the Semites (1052.4) 96:1.1 The early Semites regarded everything as being indwelt by a spirit. There were spirits of the animal and vegetable worlds; annual spirits, the lord of progeny; spirits of fire, water, and air; a veritable pantheon of spirits to be feared and worshiped. And the teaching of Melchizedek regarding a Universal Creator never fully destroyed the belief in these subordinate spirits or nature gods. (1052.5) 96:1.2 The progress of the Hebrews from polytheism through henotheism to monotheism was not an unbroken and continuous conceptual development. They experienced many retrogressions in the evolution of their Deity concepts, while during any one epoch there existed varying ideas of God among different groups of Semite believers. From time to time numerous terms were applied to their concepts of God, and in order to prevent confusion these various Deity titles will be defined as they pertain to the evolution of Jewish theology: (1053.1) 96:1.3 1. Yahweh was the god of the southern Palestinian tribes, who associated this concept of deity with Mount Horeb, the Sinai volcano. Yahweh was merely one of the hundreds and thousands of nature gods which held the attention and claimed the worship of the Semitic tribes and peoples. (1053.2) 96:1.4 2. El Elyon. For centuries after Melchizedek’s sojourn at Salem his doctrine of Deity persisted in various versions but was generally connoted by the term El Elyon, the Most High God of heaven. Many Semites, including the immediate descendants of Abraham, at various times worshiped both Yahweh and El Elyon. (1053.3) 96:1.5 3. El Shaddai. It is difficult to explain what El Shaddai stood for. This idea of God was a composite derived from the teachings of Amenemope’s Book of Wisdom modified by Ikhnaton’s doctrine of Aton and further influenced by Melchizedek’s teachings embodied in the concept of El Elyon. But as the concept of El Shaddai permeated the Hebrew mind, it became thoroughly colored with the Yahweh beliefs of the desert. (1053.4) 96:1.6 One of the dominant ideas of the religion of this era was the Egyptian concept of divine Providence, the teaching that material prosperity was a reward for serving El Shaddai. (1053.5) 96:1.7 4. El. Amid all this confusion of terminology and haziness of concept, many devout believers sincerely endeavored to worship all of these evolving ideas of divinity, and there grew up the practice of referring to this composite Deity as El. And this term included still other of the Bedouin nature gods. (1053.6) 96:1.8 5. Elohim. In Kish and Ur there long persisted Sumerian-Chaldean groups who taught a three-in-one God concept founded on the traditions of the days of Adam and Melchizedek. This doctrine was carried to Egypt, where this Trinity was worshiped under the name of Elohim, or in the singular as Eloah. The philosophic circles of Egypt and later Alexandrian teachers of Hebraic extraction taught this unity of pluralistic Gods, and many of Moses’ advisers at the time of the exodus believed in this Trinity. But the concept of the trinitarian Elohim never became a real part of Hebrew theology until after they had come under the political influence of the Babylonians. (1053.7) 96:1.9 6. Sundry names. The Semites disliked to speak the name of their Deity, and they therefore resorted to numerous appellations from time to time, such as: The Spirit of God, The Lord, The Angel of the Lord, The Almighty, The Holy One, The Most High, Adonai, The Ancient of Days, The Lord God of Israel, The Creator of Heaven and Earth, Kyrios, Jah, The Lord of Hosts, and The Father in Heaven. (1053.8) 96:1.10 Jehovah is a term which in recent times has been employed to designate the completed concept of Yahweh which finally evolved in the long Hebrew experience. But the name Jehovah did not come into use until fifteen hundred years after the times of Jesus. (1054.1) 96:1.11 Up to about 2000 B.C., Mount Sinai was intermittently active as a volcano, occasional eruptions occurring as late as the time of the sojourn of the Israelites in this region. The fire and smoke, together with the thunderous detonations associated with the eruptions of this volcanic mountain, all impressed and awed the Bedouins of the surrounding regions and caused them greatly to fear Yahweh. This spirit of Mount Horeb later became the god of the Hebrew Semites, and they eventually believed him to be supreme over all other gods. (1054.2) 96:1.12 The Canaanites had long revered Yahweh, and although many of the Kenites believed more or less in El Elyon, the supergod of the Salem religion, a majority of the Canaanites held loosely to the worship of the old tribal deities. They were hardly willing to abandon their national deities in favor of an international, not to say an interplanetary, God. They were not universal-deity minded, and therefore these tribes continued to worship their tribal deities, including Yahweh and the silver and golden calves which symbolized the Bedouin herders’ concept of the spirit of the Sinai volcano. (1054.3) 96:1.13 The Syrians, while worshiping their gods, also believed in Yahweh of the Hebrews, for their prophets said to the Syrian king: “Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them on the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” (1054.4) 96:1.14 As man advances in culture, the lesser gods are subordinated to a supreme deity; the great Jove persists only as an exclamation. The monotheists keep their subordinate gods as spirits, demons, fates, Nereids, fairies, brownies, dwarfs, banshees, and the evil eye. The Hebrews passed through henotheism and long believed in the existence of gods other than Yahweh, but they increasingly held that these foreign deities were subordinate to Yahweh. They conceded the actuality of Chemosh, god of the Amorites, but maintained that he was subordinate to Yahweh. (1054.5) 96:1.15 The idea of Yahweh has undergone the most extensive development of all the mortal theories of God. Its progressive evolution can only be compared with the metamorphosis of the Buddha concept in Asia, which in the end led to the concept of the Universal Absolute even as the Yahweh concept finally led to the idea of the Universal Father. But as a matter of historic fact, it should be understood that, while the Jews thus changed their views of Deity from the tribal god of Mount Horeb to the loving and merciful Creator Father of later times, they did not change his name; they continued all the way along to call this evolving concept of Deity, Yahweh. 2. The Semitic Peoples (1054.6) 96:2.1 The Semites of the East were well-organized and well-led horsemen who invaded the eastern regions of the fertile crescent and there united with the Babylonians. The Chaldeans near Ur were among the most advanced of the eastern Semites. The Phoenicians were a superior and well-organized group of mixed Semites who held the western section of Palestine, along the Mediterranean coast. Racially the Semites were among the most blended of Urantia peoples, containing hereditary factors from almost all of the nine world races. (1054.7) 96:2.2 Again and again the Arabian Semites fought their way into the northern Promised Land, the land that “flowed with milk and honey,” but just as often were they ejected by the better-organized and more highly civilized northern Semites and Hittites. Later, during an unusually severe famine, these roving Bedouins entered Egypt in large numbers as contract laborers on the Egyptian public works, only to find themselves undergoing the bitter experience of enslavement at the hard daily toil of the common and downtrodden laborers of the Nile valley. (1055.1) 96:2.3 It was only after the days of Machiventa Melchizedek and Abraham that certain tribes of Semites, because of their peculiar religious beliefs, were called the children of Israel and later on Hebrews, Jews, and the “chosen people.” Abraham was not the racial father of all the Hebrews; he was not even the progenitor of all the Bedouin Semites who were held captive in Egypt. True, his offspring, coming up out of Egypt, did form the nucleus of the later Jewish people, but the vast majority of the men and women who became incorporated into the clans of Israel had never sojourned in Egypt. They were merely fellow nomads who chose to follow the leadership of Moses as the children of Abraham and their Semite associates from Egypt journeyed through northern Arabia. (1055.2) 96:2.4 The Melchizedek teaching concerning El Elyon, the Most High, and the covenant of divine favor through faith, had been largely forgotten by the time of the Egyptian enslavement of the Semite peoples who were shortly to form the Hebrew nation. But throughout this period of captivity these Arabian nomads maintained a lingering traditional belief in Yahweh as their racial deity. (1055.3) 96:2.5 Yahweh was worshiped by more than one hundred separate Arabian tribes, and except for the tinge of the El Elyon concept of Melchizedek which persisted among the more educated classes of Egypt, including the mixed Hebrew and Egyptian stocks, the religion of the rank and file of the Hebrew captive slaves was a modified version of the old Yahweh ritual of magic and sacrifice. 3. The Matchless Moses (1055.4) 96:3.1 The beginning of the evolution of the Hebraic concepts and ideals of a Supreme Creator dates from the departure of the Semites from Egypt under that great leader, teacher, and organizer, Moses. His mother was of the royal family of Egypt; his father was a Semitic liaison officer between the government and the Bedouin captives. Moses thus possessed qualities derived from superior racial sources; his ancestry was so highly blended that it is impossible to classify him in any one racial group. Had he not been of this mixed type, he would never have displayed that unusual versatility and adaptability which enabled him to manage the diversified horde which eventually became associated with those Bedouin Semites who fled from Egypt to the Arabian Desert under his leadership.* (1055.5) 96:3.2 Despite the enticements of the culture of the Nile kingdom, Moses elected to cast his lot with the people of his father. At the time this great organizer was formulating his plans for the eventual freeing of his father’s people, the Bedouin captives hardly had a religion worthy of the name; they were virtually without a true concept of God and without hope in the world. (1055.6) 96:3.3 No leader ever undertook to reform and uplift a more forlorn, downcast, dejected, and ignorant group of human beings. But these slaves carried latent possibilities of development in their hereditary strains, and there were a sufficient number of educated leaders who had been coached by Moses in preparation for the day of revolt and the strike for liberty to constitute a corps of efficient organizers. These superior men had been employed as native overseers of their people; they had received some education because of Moses’ influence with the Egyptian rulers. (1056.1) 96:3.4 Moses endeavored to negotiate diplomatically for the freedom of his fellow Semites. He and his brother entered into a compact with the king of Egypt whereby they were granted permission peaceably to leave the valley of the Nile for the Arabian Desert. They were to receive a modest payment of money and goods in token of their long service in Egypt. The Hebrews for their part entered into an agreement to maintain friendly relations with the Pharaohs and not to join in any alliance against Egypt. But the king later saw fit to repudiate this treaty, giving as his reason the excuse that his spies had discovered disloyalty among the Bedouin slaves. He claimed they sought freedom for the purpose of going into the desert to organize the nomads against Egypt. (1056.2) 96:3.5 But Moses was not discouraged; he bided his time, and in less than a year, when the Egyptian military forces were fully occupied in resisting the simultaneous onslaughts of a strong Libyan thrust from the south and a Greek naval invasion from the north, this intrepid organizer led his compatriots out of Egypt in a spectacular night flight. This dash for liberty was carefully planned and skillfully executed. And they were successful, notwithstanding that they were hotly pursued by Pharaoh and a small body of Egyptians, who all fell before the fugitives’ defense, yielding much booty, all of which was augmented by the loot of the advancing host of escaping slaves as they marched on toward their ancestral desert home. 4. The Proclamation of Yahweh (1056.3) 96:4.1 The evolution and elevation of the Mosaic teaching has influenced almost one half of all the world, and still does even in the twentieth century. While Moses comprehended the more advanced Egyptian religious philosophy, the Bedouin slaves knew little about such teachings, but they had never entirely forgotten the god of Mount Horeb, whom their ancestors had called Yahweh. (1056.4) 96:4.2 Moses had heard of the teachings of Machiventa Melchizedek from both his father and his mother, their commonness of religious belief being the explanation for the unusual union between a woman of royal blood and a man from a captive race. Moses’ father-in-law was a Kenite worshiper of El Elyon, but the emancipator’s parents were believers in El Shaddai. Moses thus was educated an El Shaddaist; through the influence of his father-in-law he became an El Elyonist; and by the time of the Hebrew encampment about Mount Sinai after the flight from Egypt, he had formulated a new and enlarged concept of Deity (derived from all his former beliefs), which he wisely decided to proclaim to his people as an expanded concept of their olden tribal god, Yahweh. (1056.5) 96:4.3 Moses had endeavored to teach these Bedouins the idea of El Elyon, but before leaving Egypt, he had become convinced they would never fully comprehend this doctrine. Therefore he deliberately determined upon the compromise adoption of their tribal god of the desert as the one and only god of his followers. Moses did not specifically teach that other peoples and nations might not have other gods, but he did resolutely maintain that Yahweh was over and above all, especially to the Hebrews. But always was he plagued by the awkward predicament of trying to present his new and higher idea of Deity to these ignorant slaves under the guise of the ancient term Yahweh, which had always been symbolized by the golden calf of the Bedouin tribes. (1056.6) 96:4.4 The fact that Yahweh was the god of the fleeing Hebrews explains why they tarried so long before the holy mountain of Sinai, and why they there received the ten commandments which Moses promulgated in the name of Yahweh, the god of Horeb. During this lengthy sojourn before Sinai the religious ceremonials of the newly evolving Hebrew worship were further perfected. (1057.1) 96:4.5 It does not appear that Moses would ever have succeeded in the establishment of his somewhat advanced ceremonial worship and in keeping his followers intact for a quarter of a century had it not been for the violent eruption of Horeb during the third week of their worshipful sojourn at its base. “The mountain of Yahweh was consumed in fire, and the smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.” In view of this cataclysm it is not surprising that Moses could impress upon his brethren the teaching that their God was “mighty, terrible, a devouring fire, fearful, and all-powerful.” (1057.2) 96:4.6 Moses proclaimed that Yahweh was the Lord God of Israel, who had singled out the Hebrews as his chosen people; he was building a new nation, and he wisely nationalized his religious teachings, telling his followers that Yahweh was a hard taskmaster, a “jealous God.” But nonetheless he sought to enlarge their concept of divinity when he taught them that Yahweh was the “God of the spirits of all flesh,” and when he said, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Moses taught that Yahweh was a covenant-keeping God; that he “will not forsake you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers because the Lord loves you and will not forget the oath by which he swore to your fathers.”* (1057.3) 96:4.7 Moses made a heroic effort to uplift Yahweh to the dignity of a supreme Deity when he presented him as the “God of truth and without iniquity, just and right in all his ways.” And yet, despite this exalted teaching, the limited understanding of his followers made it necessary to speak of God as being in man’s image, as being subject to fits of anger, wrath, and severity, even that he was vengeful and easily influenced by man’s conduct. (1057.4) 96:4.8 Under the teachings of Moses this tribal nature god, Yahweh, became the Lord God of Israel, who followed them through the wilderness and even into exile, where he presently was conceived of as the God of all peoples. The later captivity that enslaved the Jews in Babylon finally liberated the evolving concept of Yahweh to assume the monotheistic role of the God of all nations. (1057.5) 96:4.9 The most unique and amazing feature of the religious history of the Hebrews concerns this continuous evolution of the concept of Deity from the primitive god of Mount Horeb up through the teachings of their successive spiritual leaders to the high level of development depicted in the Deity doctrines of the Isaiahs, who proclaimed that magnificent concept of the loving and merciful Creator Father. 5. The Teachings of Moses (1057.6) 96:5.1 Moses was an extraordinary combination of military leader, social organizer, and religious teacher. He was the most important individual world teacher and leader between the times of Machiventa and Jesus. Moses attempted to introduce many reforms in Israel of which there is no record. In the space of one man’s life he led the polyglot horde of so-called Hebrews out of slavery and uncivilized roaming while he laid the foundation for the subsequent birth of a nation and the perpetuation of a race. (1057.7) 96:5.2 There is so little on record of the great work of Moses because the Hebrews had no written language at the time of the exodus. The record of the times and doings of Moses was derived from the traditions extant more than one thousand years after the death of the great leader. (1058.1) 96:5.3 Many of the advances which Moses made over and above the religion of the Egyptians and the surrounding Levantine tribes were due to the Kenite traditions of the time of Melchizedek. Without the teaching of Machiventa to Abraham and his contemporaries, the Hebrews would have come out of Egypt in hopeless darkness. Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, gathered up the residue of the traditions of the days of Melchizedek, and these teachings, joined to the learning of the Egyptians, guided Moses in the creation of the improved religion and ritual of the Israelites. Moses was an organizer; he selected the best in the religion and mores of Egypt and Palestine and, associating these practices with the traditions of the Melchizedek teachings, organized the Hebrew ceremonial system of worship. (1058.2) 96:5.4 Moses was a believer in Providence; he had become thoroughly tainted with the doctrines of Egypt concerning the supernatural control of the Nile and the other elements of nature. He had a great vision of God, but he was thoroughly sincere when he taught the Hebrews that, if they would obey God, “He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will multiply the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land — the corn, wine, oil, and your flocks. You shall be prospered above all people, and the Lord your God will take away from you all sickness and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt upon you.” He even said: “Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the power to get wealth.” “You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. You shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.” (1058.3) 96:5.5 But it was truly pitiful to watch this great mind of Moses trying to adapt his sublime concept of El Elyon, the Most High, to the comprehension of the ignorant and illiterate Hebrews. To his assembled leaders he thundered, “The Lord your God is one God; there is none beside him”; while to the mixed multitude he declared, “Who is like your God among all the gods?” Moses made a brave and partly successful stand against fetishes and idolatry, declaring, “You saw no similitude on the day that your God spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire.” He also forbade the making of images of any sort. (1058.4) 96:5.6 Moses feared to proclaim the mercy of Yahweh, preferring to awe his people with the fear of the justice of God, saying: “The Lord your God is God of Gods, and Lord of Lords, a great God, a mighty and terrible God, who regards not man.” Again he sought to control the turbulent clans when he declared that “your God kills when you disobey him; he heals and gives life when you obey him.” But Moses taught these tribes that they would become the chosen people of God only on condition that they “kept all his commandments and obeyed all his statutes.” (1058.5) 96:5.7 Little of the mercy of God was taught the Hebrews during these early times. They learned of God as “the Almighty; the Lord is a man of war, God of battles, glorious in power, who dashes in pieces his enemies.” “The Lord your God walks in the midst of the camp to deliver you.” The Israelites thought of their God as one who loved them, but who also “hardened Pharaoh’s heart” and “cursed their enemies.” (1058.6) 96:5.8 While Moses presented fleeting glimpses of a universal and beneficent Deity to the children of Israel, on the whole, their day-by-day concept of Yahweh was that of a God but little better than the tribal gods of the surrounding peoples. Their concept of God was primitive, crude, and anthropomorphic; when Moses passed on, these Bedouin tribes quickly reverted to the semibarbaric ideas of their olden gods of Horeb and the desert. The enlarged and more sublime vision of God which Moses every now and then presented to his leaders was soon lost to view, while most of the people turned to the worship of their fetish golden calves, the Palestinian herdsman’s symbol of Yahweh. (1059.1) 96:5.9 When Moses turned over the command of the Hebrews to Joshua, he had already gathered up thousands of the collateral descendants of Abraham, Nahor, Lot, and other of the related tribes and had whipped them into a self-sustaining and partially self-regulating nation of pastoral warriors. 6. The God Concept After Moses’ Death (1059.2) 96:6.1 Upon the death of Moses his lofty concept of Yahweh rapidly deteriorated. Joshua and the leaders of Israel continued to harbor the Mosaic traditions of the all-wise, beneficent, and almighty God, but the common people rapidly reverted to the older desert idea of Yahweh. And this backward drift of the concept of Deity continued increasingly under the successive rule of the various tribal sheiks, the so-called Judges. (1059.3) 96:6.2 The spell of the extraordinary personality of Moses had kept alive in the hearts of his followers the inspiration of an increasingly enlarged concept of God; but when they once reached the fertile lands of Palestine, they quickly evolved from nomadic herders into settled and somewhat sedate farmers. And this evolution of life practices and change of religious viewpoint demanded a more or less complete change in the character of their conception of the nature of their God, Yahweh. During the times of the beginning of the transmutation of the austere, crude, exacting, and thunderous desert god of Sinai into the later appearing concept of a God of love, justice, and mercy, the Hebrews almost lost sight of Moses’ lofty teachings. They came near losing all concept of monotheism; they nearly lost their opportunity of becoming the people who would serve as a vital link in the spiritual evolution of Urantia, the group who would conserve the Melchizedek teaching of one God until the times of the incarnation of a bestowal Son of that Father of all. (1059.4) 96:6.3 Desperately Joshua sought to hold the concept of a supreme Yahweh in the minds of the tribesmen, causing it to be proclaimed: “As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you nor forsake you.” Joshua found it necessary to preach a stern gospel to his disbelieving people, people all too willing to believe their old and native religion but unwilling to go forward in the religion of faith and righteousness. The burden of Joshua’s teaching became: “Yahweh is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.” The highest concept of this age pictured Yahweh as a “God of power, judgment, and justice.” (1059.5) 96:6.4 But even in this dark age, every now and then a solitary teacher would arise proclaiming the Mosaic concept of divinity: “You children of wickedness cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God.” “Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his Maker?” “Can you by searching find out God? Can you find out the Almighty to perfection? Behold, God is great and we know him not. Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out.” 7. Psalms and the Book of Job (1060.1) 96:7.1 Under the leadership of their sheiks and priests the Hebrews became loosely established in Palestine. But they soon drifted back into the benighted beliefs of the desert and became contaminated with the less advanced Canaanite religious practices. They became idolatrous and licentious, and their idea of Deity fell far below the Egyptian and Mesopotamian concepts of God that were maintained by certain surviving Salem groups, and which are recorded in some of the Psalms and in the so-called Book of Job. (1060.2) 96:7.2 The Psalms are the work of a score or more of authors; many were written by Egyptian and Mesopotamian teachers. During these times when the Levant worshiped nature gods, there were still a goodly number who believed in the supremacy of El Elyon, the Most High. (1060.3) 96:7.3 No collection of religious writings gives expression to such a wealth of devotion and inspirational ideas of God as the Book of Psalms. And it would be very helpful if, in the perusal of this wonderful collection of worshipful literature, consideration could be given to the source and chronology of each separate hymn of praise and adoration, bearing in mind that no other single collection covers such a great range of time. This Book of Psalms is the record of the varying concepts of God entertained by the believers of the Salem religion throughout the Levant and embraces the entire period from Amenemope to Isaiah. In the Psalms God is depicted in all phases of conception, from the crude idea of a tribal deity to the vastly expanded ideal of the later Hebrews, wherein Yahweh is pictured as a loving ruler and merciful Father. (1060.4) 96:7.4 And when thus regarded, this group of Psalms constitutes the most valuable and helpful assortment of devotional sentiments ever assembled by man up to the times of the twentieth century. The worshipful spirit of this collection of hymns transcends that of all other sacred books of the world. (1060.5) 96:7.5 The variegated picture of Deity presented in the Book of Job was the product of more than a score of Mesopotamian religious teachers extending over a period of almost three hundred years. And when you read the lofty concept of divinity found in this compilation of Mesopotamian beliefs, you will recognize that it was in the neighborhood of Ur of Chaldea that the idea of a real God was best preserved during the dark days in Palestine. (1060.6) 96:7.6 In Palestine the wisdom and all-pervasiveness of God was often grasped but seldom his love and mercy. The Yahweh of these times “sends evil spirits to dominate the souls of his enemies”; he prospers his own and obedient children, while he curses and visits dire judgments upon all others. “He disappoints the devices of the crafty; he takes the wise in their own deceit.” (1060.7) 96:7.7 Only at Ur did a voice arise to cry out the mercy of God, saying: “He shall pray to God and shall find favor with him and shall see his face with joy, for God will give to man divine righteousness.” Thus from Ur there is preached salvation, divine favor, by faith: “He is gracious to the repentant and says, ‘Deliver him from going down in the pit, for I have found a ransom.’ If any say, ‘I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not,’ God will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and he shall see the light.” Not since the times of Melchizedek had the Levantine world heard such a ringing and cheering message of human salvation as this extraordinary teaching of Elihu, the prophet of Ur and priest of the Salem believers, that is, the remnant of the onetime Melchizedek colony in Mesopotamia. (1061.1) 96:7.8 And thus did the remnants of the Salem missionaries in Mesopotamia maintain the light of truth during the period of the disorganization of the Hebrew peoples until the appearance of the first of that long line of the teachers of Israel who never stopped as they built, concept upon concept, until they had achieved the realization of the ideal of the Universal and Creator Father of all, the acme of the evolution of the Yahweh concept. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Arab conquests - an extraordinary period in the 7th and 8th centuries when the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula conquered the Middle East, Persia, North Africa and Southern Europe and spread the ideas of the Islamic religion. In 632 the prophet Muhammad died and left behind the nascent religion of Islam among a few tribes in the Arabian Desert. They were relatively small in number, they were divided among themselves and they were surrounded by vast and powerful empires. Yet within 100 years Arab armies controlled territory from Northern Spain to Southern Iran and Islamic ideas had begun to profoundly refashion the societies they touched. It is one of the most extraordinary and significant events in world history that began the slow and profound transformation of Greek and Persian societies into Islamic ones.
