Michael Stoianov Gloukhov was born in June 1944 during the heaviest bombing of Sofia by the US Air Corps. His parents were forced to divorce because his father was an officer in the pre-communist Royal Army. Michael graduated in 1963 and was conscripted in the Bulgarian Army for two years. To avoid membership in the Communist party, he declined to go to Reserve Officer's School and went instead as a Private in the mechanized Infantry. Eventually, he escaped to Belgium, followed by his mother and little sister. He earned a degree in Political Science while he drove a taxicab and in the 1980s became an international radio broadcaster with the Bulgarian Service of the Voice of America. Gloukhov joined the US Navy Reserve in 1987 at the age of 43, serving all over the world due to his unique, multifaceted background. He is currently married to the former Miss Dobrinka Droumeva and has a son, Ryan, who is now aged 30.About the author After spending over 33 years in the computer and information technology industry, Richard decided to take an early retirement to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional writer and published author. I love when people don't accept the status quo from the medical field. One disease where there is no known cure, and not much is known about its cause or treatments for it, is Parkinson's an uncurable neurological disease. So Scott Hanley of Belfast, Northern Ireland chose a different path to dealing with getting diagnosed with it, and as a result believes he has reduced his symptoms by 95%! Repeat, 95%! That's simply unheard of. He didn't do anything magic, take any banned substances, or sell his soul to the Devil. Parkinson's patients are usually instructed to engage their minds more. Scott added to this advice with some very commonsense approaches, including tweaking his nutrition and moving his body. But Scott reasoned that just doing cardio would actually be more mind-numbing, so this former Royal Army soldier engaged in short-burst exercises, which he could easily do during the lockdown of the pandemic. This eventually led him to a CrossFit gym in Belfast, where he found a community to engage with and where he has become an inspirational participant.  Scott has found the CrossFit workouts have continued to keep his mind and body strong and moving, so much so that for a couple of years, many in the gym weren't even aware of his Parkinson's. Scott's experiences have given him a unique perspective into resilience, and he shares his story, which might motivate anyone to also find their own solutions when facing a tough medical diagnosis.Scott HanleyInstagram @thrive_happensBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

On this week's episode we're headed across the pond. WO2 Steve Turner is a Quartermaster Sergeant Instructor in the British Royal Army Physical Training Corps, and he's here to help us understand how the British Army approaches physical fitness. If you're in the US military, it's worth noting up front that Warrant Officers in the British Army are not quite the same as ours. He's much more like what we would call a Sergeant Major. The topics we covered include everything from how NCOs can take on full time roles as physical training instructors to how they've recently updated their testing to (as listeners have come to expect from us) a discussion of how their soldiers are fed. Their new Role Fitness Test Soldier is quite similar to our ACFT, they have just started implementing something called EDGE, which parallels our H2F, and although we discuss plenty of differences between our approaches there are clearly some similar challenges and valuable lessons we can learn from their model. This document provides descriptions of the various fitness tests British soldiers take at different points in their career, depending on their occupation. You can find an excellent hype reel that will have you ready to go try out for the RAPTC here. If you're ready to try out, here's an overview of the selection process for RAPTCIs.

It's the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month of the Twenty-Third Year of the Twenty-First Century. That's 105 years since the Armistice that ended World War One. That's a good reason to put out a special edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement to honor Veterans Day and to mention a few other things. This is also the 600th edition of the newsletter and podcast, and it's good to day to reach a milestone. I'm Sean Tubbs. On today's program:* The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors honors Veterans Day * A delegation from Guatemala is coming to visit Charlottesville* There will soon be another round of maintenance of trees on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall First shout-out: Virginia Veterans Services FoundationIn today's holiday-focused public service announcement, there are 700,000 veterans living in Virginia after serving in the armed forces in conflicts ranging from World War Two to the present day. Many need assistance from time to time, and the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation exists to provide that help. They seek contributions to support:* Virginia Veteran and Family Support* Veterans Care Centers* Virginia Values Veterans Program* Virginia Veterans Cemeteries* Veterans Benefits ProgramVisit the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation website to learn more.Albemarle County Supervisors marks Veterans Day Today is the 85th anniversary of Veterans Day and earlier this month, the Albemarle Board of Supervisors marked the occasion. “Throughout our nation's history, the United States of America has called on its citizens in uniform to serve and to protect our national security,” said Donna Price, the chair of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors and herself a veteran and is a retired U.S. Navy Captain in the Judge Advocate Generals. Price read from a proclamation recognizing the continued celebration of the national holiday.“On this day and every day, we remember the millions of patriots who have served and sacrificed for the betterment of our nation,” Price said. There are many veterans serving in Albemarle County government and in Albemarle County Public Schools and the proclamation is intended to salute their contributions now and in the past. “We, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, do hereby recognize November 11, 2023 as Veterans Day and celebrate all who have served our country around the world,” Price said. Deputy County Executive Trevor Henry is also a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. “In local government and in schools we believe we have well over 200 employees that in a prior life raised their right hand to support and defend our Constitution,” Henry said. “And when there period of service ended via either retirement or an obligation, they also found their way to our organization.”Three of those employees appeared before the Board to tell a bit of their stories and what they do now. Sergeant Dale Shoop served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1986 with some of that time in the demilitarized zone in Korea. He now works in Community Development as an inspector.“Heartfelt acknowledgment to my great grandfather, my grandfather, and my uncle for serving in the Royal Air Force, the Royal Army, and Royal Navy in Great Brain and England,” Shoop said. “Thank you to my father who served in the United States Army and my son who served in the United States Army and continues to serve in the intelligence sector.” Sergeant Roger Snodgrass served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 2002 to 2007 before joining the U.S. Army where he served under active duty through 2014. “Sergeant Snodgrass joined Albemarle County as a police officer in 2014 and currently holds the rank of sergeant on evening shift patrol,” Henry said. Snodgrass thanked the county for being an organization that's friendly to veterans. “As an individual who has multiple friends and family members in other local government, I do have the opportunity to say that this is a high performance organization,” Snodgrass said. “With our Board of Supervisors, our county executive's office, and our command staff with Albemarle County police department, they allow us to be able to provide outstanding customer services, day in, day out.”Reynaldo Avali served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a bridge crew member with the 299th Engineering Division beginning in 1995 with multiple deployments to Iraq. “During the first deployment to Iraq, they placed two bridges over the Euphrates River for combat operations,” Henry said. “The second time his unit was responsible for maintaining the bridges, training Iraqi engineers, and responsible for removing six bridges for retrograde operations.” During that time, Avali has also worked in building services for Albemarle County Public Schools where he continues to serve. Supervisor Bea LaPisto Kirtley thanked all of the veterans assembled in Lane Auditorium for their service. “It is something that you all do for us to keep our democracy safe, to keep all of us safe,” LaPisto Kirley said. “It is a solemn oath that you take to protect all of us and please be aware that all of us appreciate it. I think all of America really appreciates your service.”Supervisor Ned Gallaway expressed his appreciation as well and said he recently went back to his hometown to clear out his parents' home.“And we found my dad's formal dress uniform which  I had never seen in my life,” Gallaway said. “My brother-in-law who also served was navigating me around the different patches and such telling me, informing me what those were. And then we also found in a trunk a bunch of letters that my grandfather sent my grandmother during the war, but we found the official communication that he was [missing in action]. He was a prisoner of war and he thankfully was able to return at the end of World War II and he became a police officer.” Supervisor Diantha McKeel took the opportunity to share some resources that are available through Region 10 to veterans. Take a look here if you would like more information. “Region 10 currently has a partnership with Virginia Lock and Talk with resources available for all individuals including veterans to receive medical lock boxes and bags as well as trigger locks for firearms to assist individuals and families in locking up lethal means,” McKeel said. “Virginia Veterans Service Foundation also has a homeless veterans' fund and has been able to provide one-time assistance to homeless veterans to support rent, utility, and rental deposits.”   McKeel said Region 10 has also recently hired a peer support specialist to specifically assist veterans. Supervisor Ann Mallek used her time to mention the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2044 in Earlysville and American Legion Post 74 in Shadwell.“These organizations take care of their own,” Mallek said. “They raised funds most recently to buy a new medical transport van to help their fellows get to remote medical services.”Those services are currently a one-way 90-mile drive to south of Richmond. Mallek called for a veterans clinic to be located closer to home, particularly with the potential for expansion at Rivanna Station. Mallek also put in a plug for an organization called Living Free Together which also provides support to veterans and military families.  Price thanked Mallek for bringing up the role that families play and said that she was grateful for support from hers during her career. “Military service is frequently a family affair,” Price said. “From the Civil War through World War One, World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, to today…My father, a 97-year-old World War II Navy Combat vet. My son, a major in the Marine Corps. Myself with my own service. You'll find that people who work with or serve the county often have other family members who similarly provide public service.” Albemarle County also held a ceremony at 11 a.m. to mark Veterans Day.   Guatemalan Sister City delegation visiting next week Technically, Huehuetenango is not one of Charlottesville's Sister Cities. Instead, the western Guatemalan community is a Friendship City which is one step away. Either way, a delegation from that community will be visiting next week. “The goal of the delegation's visit is to forge initial ties between the government and citizens of Charlottesville and Huehuetenango,” reads a press release announcing the trip that will take place Monday through Wednesday. This is the first time more than one person from Huehuetenango has visited the area since the relationship was formalized in 2021.  There are two public events happening:* Coffee Open House, Tuesday, November 14, 9:00 – 11:00, Omni Hotel (212 Ridge McIntire Rd, Charlottesville, VA): This is a chance to learn more about Charlottesville's Sister and Friendship Cities and an opportunity to meet the delegation and drink free Guatemalan coffee brought from Huehuetenango. * Public Reception and Program, Wednesday, November 15, 6:00 PM – 7:30 pm, City Space (100 Fifth St NE, Charlottesville, VA): Charlottesville Mayor Lloyd Snook and Huehuetenango Mayor Gustavo Cano will signing of the Friendship declaration between the two communities. “The event will feature Marimba Music, a short program featuring words of friendship and welcome between the two cities and a choral arrangement from CHS ensemble.” The way toward this relationship dates back to the work of The Ixtatán Foundation, a group formed in 2001 to help build a high school in a small town in the greater Huehuetenango province. Charlottesville prepping for more work on Downtown Mall treesA dozen and a half people gathered on a recent Monday evening on the Downtown Mall outside the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department's offices to learn more about impending tree work to address safety. Urban Forester Steve Gaines held a laser pointer and directed it towards a dead branch he said presents a hazard. “If you think about like mid summer or in the weeks that we have the holidays coming up,” Gaines said. “How many people are going to be walking on the Mall? Thousands a day.” Gaines said his job as an arborist is to protect people and the trees themselves by trying to understand how they may react. “What is the probability of that branch failing? And if it does fail, does it land on another branch on its way down? Is it going to hit a building? Is it going to hit a person? What's the probability? When might it happen? Would it take a major wind event? A major snow event, something like that?” The bosques of Willow Oaks planted in the mid-70's are a very important component of the historic Lawrence Halprin design for the pedestrian mall. Many are also approaching their 60th year and their health has not always been closely watched. In December 2015, a report was published that called for a management plan. (read the report)“Despite the good initial outward appearances of the tree planting, the stand of oak trees is in a fragile, declining state,” reads the executive summary of that report. “The overly tight spacing of the trees and the insistence on paving right up to the base of the trunks of the trees has set in motion a series of biological factors that is beginning to push many of the trees to the point of failure.”  In the summer of 2017, there was momentum toward putting a management plan in place with another tree walk similar to the one from late October. (Could Downtown Mall trees be on the chopping block?, Kayli Wren, Charlottesville Tomorrow, July 26, 2017)Downtown Mall tree management faded as a priority as other events took place in the summer of 2017. Earlier this year, the city moved forward with a plan to remove several damaged or dead trees. Urban forester Steve Gaines held another walk on October 30 to prepare for another round of maintenance. “The purpose here was mostly to inform folks about tree work that is very likely coming this winter once the trees go completely dormant,” said Steve Gaines, the urban forester for the City of Charlottesville. “We will be going through to do some pruning. We call it crown cleaning as in we are removing some of the obvious hazards. Two inch deadwood and above.” Gaines said the event also had provided an opportunity to explain more about a forthcoming plan to manage the trees on the Downtown Mall going forward. The firm Wolf Josey Landscape Architects won the contract from the City of Charlottesville for the management plan. The work that Gaines talked about on October 30 was more pressing and continued work done in January of this year.“Every year I do an assessment and I take pictures and hit trees with the mallet and figure out what we're doing with decay,” Gaines said. Gaines held the event and will do more like it in the future because he understands how important the trees are to Charlottesville. “This is the Downtown Mall's tree, so it's a very sensitive, very historic topic and people feel very strongly about these trees and we just want to make sure that everybody is well-informed about what is going on with the trees and make people realize that they are going through an inflection point right now and to some degree there is some hazard,” Gaines said.“Most of those bigger limbs are very dead,” he said to the group while looking at one cluster of trees in front of the parking garage. During the tour, Gaines also explained more about how the trees interact with fungus, with bugs, other chemicals, and how they're affected by a changing climate. Stay tuned for more information about trees on the Downtown Mall and across the entire area. Reading material:* Charlottesville moves forward with apartment-quashing land buy, Hawes Spencer, Charlottesville Daily Progress (paywall) November 8, 2023* Charlottesville High School principal resigns, Jason Armesto, Charlottesville Daily Progress (paywall) November 9, 2023* Bigger at last: Text for historic marker recognizing Charlottesville slave trade revealed, Hawes Spencer, Charlottesville Daily Progress (paywall) November 10, 2023Concluding notes for #600Saturday editions feel good to produce, especially after taking a couple of days off in which I tried to not even think about this work. If you happened to catch the 2021 film House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, based on the dramatic real-life events of the Gucci family, then you also caught an interesting glimpse into the life of Domenico De Sole. But that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Born in a small Italian town to a General of the Royal Army, Domenico grew up knowing nothing about fashion, and says "it's a one-in-twenty-billion chance" that he's wound up where he is today. Beginning his career as a lawyer after graduating from Harvard Law School, Domenico eventually entered the employ of one Rudolfo Gucci during a chaotic time when the family was fighting over shares of the business. Through a series of extraordinary events Domenico landed a much larger role in the company, taking over as CEO of the Gucci Group, ultimately saving it from near bankruptcy. Simultaneously Domenico championed a promising new up-and-coming fashion designer from America by the name of Tom Ford. And after leaving Gucci, Domenico helped Tom build his own brand from scratch, nurturing the company into a multi-billion-dollar business. That seems like enough to earn Domenico a place in the fashion hall of fame, but it still doesn't even scratch the surface of his impact on the industry. Our conversation took place at an annual convention for the National Retail Federation, and we had a limited time to speak on stage, but quite honestly, you couldn't cover half the stuff this man has done even if you had all day. But we managed to cover a lot of ground in our chat, so settle in for a taste of the incredible life of Domenico De Sole. Thanks for tuning in to episode 28. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Breathe of fresh air is the best way to describe Shawn as he came across full of life and love for the craft he has chosen and i had a blast chatting with with hard working actor from across the pond! Shawn can be seen in so many great shows so to have a bit of time with him was an honour! Follow Shawn on social media: Twitter: @iamshawnahmed website: www.iamshawnahmed.com POV: www.povfilm.org keep safe and stay super! Shawn Ahmed is an award-winning actor, writer and producer based out of Toronto. His grade 4 teacher recognised his wild imagination and ability to engage his classmates, so she cast him as the lead in the school production of Grease. Thus, began his love for storytelling. Even while he earned a Specialist in Economics and Economic History at the University of Toronto, he found a way to perform; working on stages in the backs of bars, church basements, and at street festivals. Shawn has since amassed a lengthy list of credits in film, TV, and theatre. He is called upon to deliver dramatic monologues on The Expanse (Syfy), provide comedic breaks in his recurring role on the hit series, Coroner (CBC/The CW), or to fight alongside the Royal Army in Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft). He is known for balancing line between comedy and drama, with a penchant for playing quirky character. Critics describe his work as “immensely sympathetic”, while some note his “quick wit”. One time in high school his friend yelled “Shawn's weird!” and everyone ran away from him. The next day his peers had turned “Shawn's Weird” into a song with an angelic three-part harmony (true story). These types of incidents and having the term “odd duck” levied towards him have made him wonder, “do I have the same curse as Keanu Reeves? Am I a character actor trapped in a leading man's body?!” He asked this question to Toni Braxton, who he stars alongside in the upcoming MOW franchise Fallen Angles Murder Club (Lifetime Network), to which she responded, “bro, I'm trying to eat my lunch here!” Notable credits include Under the Christmas Tree (Lifetime Network), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (The CW), Slasher (Chiller), Awake (Netflix), Twilight Zone (CBS), Love on Harbour Island (Hallmark), Hudson and Rex (City TV), Siren (Freeform), Rogue (Direct TV), Max and Shred (Nickelodeon), Saw VI (Lionsgate), Flight 93 (A&E), as well as the voice of Stephen Singh on Superhuman Public Radio. On-stage, Shawn has garnered critical acclaim for his work on The Orchard (After Chekhov), Of Marriage and Men (Shaw Festival); Twelfth Night (Shakespeare Bash'd); Romeo and (her) Juliet (Dauntless Theatre); And Slowly Beauty… (Tarragon Theatre); Macbeth (Driftwood Theatre); Comedy of Errors, Revolutionary Moments, and More Words! More Play! (Shakespeare&Company). Shawn proudly sits on the board of directors at POV Films, a charitable organization that helps marginalized youth break into the film and television industry through training, mentorship, job placement, and professional development. Over the past decade, POV has done a terrific job finding and training individuals to work within the industry. Shawn believes the next step for POV is to find the best and brightest and turn them into leaders. With this in mind, he reconnected with Fibe TV1 over at Bell media (where he's sold three of his own shows) and pitched a series of projects led by people he found and vetted through POV. Four of the five shows were greenlit and will air across Canada in 2022. Back in 2012, Shawn co-founded Crazy Shirt Productions, as a place for him and his creative peers to write, direct and produce. His projects have toured festivals worldwide, garnered awards and accolades, and sold for national and international distribution --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

“I don't want to be THAT guy!” – is something that we'd say, especially when we're trying to figure out the best ways to advocate our work. Here are other comments that purpose-driven people had shared about this ongoing nagging feeling when they talk about their work and life: “What would other people think?” “I don't feel like I'm the right person to do this.” “Other people are WAY more qualified than me.” And no wonder, too. We've been fed this idea that to be successful, to do good work, to be a leader, or even just to live a good life—that we can only do it by hustling others and being loud. But not according to David Chitty, an adventurer who spent 35+ years going from Royal advisor, to riot control supervisor, to climbing and abseiling leader. The Daily Hustle Podcast

Was recently watching a documentary about George Washington and it quickly became apparent as to why he possessed such incredible leadership capabilities... Throughout the doc there were several historians giving their perspective on the American Revolution and the significant happenings that led to the eventual Continental Army victory and creation of the United States of America. One common theme completely free of subjective analysis was George Washington's consistent presence on the front lines but not necessarily in the reckless hard charging commando way we may envision...  When the British showed up with 32,000 troops in New York Harbor, Washington and his group of revolutionaries were up against long odds...  Yet as the late great Kenny Rogers pointed out, part of being a fantastic leader is knowing when to hold 'em and when to fold em. Washington was a strategist and oftentimes in the early going, a huge part of that strategy was knowing when to retreat and save his army to fight another day...  Washington and his troops had no choice but to use unusual warfare tactics against the world's largest and most powerful army. The targeting of British officers let the redcoats know that even if the Americans were defeated, it was going to come at a significant cost to the Royal Army. Fittingly, after several years of fighting, the last American offensive of the Revolutionary War began at Yorktown with a shot fired by Washington himself...  A couple of monumental lessons learned here: 1. Fear the man that has nothing to lose Great Britain was an established empire enjoying a rather conflict free civilization, so the motivation for Britain came from pure ego and greed... Yet the Continental Army was fighting to establish a new nation and they were fighting for freedom that they envisioned would long outlive them... Simply put, Washington & the US troops battled for a cause much bigger than themselves and were more than willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for their efforts. 2. “People want to be led, NOT commanded.” This was a statement from one of the historians interviewed in the documentary and he fucking drilled it... Washington was the Commander in Chief, but he was much more of a leader than somebody who barked out commands... Not only was Washington well known for going into the trenches of battle himself, but he was a master at delegating power to people he trusted. Let this be a beautiful lesson to all of us the next time we find ourselves in a position of power…  Leaders don't command, they LEAD.  -EB   P.S. Prologue:This story begins with a chair. During my childhood in my grandparents’ home there was a chair that no one was allowed to sit in. It was made of simple dark stained wood, with a square frame and ladder back… it was conspicuously placed outside of the natural seating arrangement in the room, up against a wall. When visitors would see the lone and peculiar chair, they would ask my grandmother, “What’s with the chair?”. She would enthusiastically reply simply, “Oh, that’s George Washington’s chair.”The legend of the chair the was always vaguely described. The story was that it belonged to an ancestor named Tjerck Beekman who had fought in the American Revolution, and that this chair sat in his house. And apparently George Washington would occasionally visit and sit in this chair. And then through the generations this heirloom passed eventually to my grandmother. As a kid, I always remember thinking “Tjerck Beekman… that’s a weird name, and the chair belonged to a man named Tjerck… Ok. And he fought in the American Revolution… well that’s pretty cool.”After my grandmother died, I began to expand on the genealogy groundwork she’d laid. And I was surprised to find the story behind the ladderback chair was not only probably true, but also part of a larger story of one of the greatest tribulations of loss and disaster during the war for independence. The chair itself was insignificant but considering the destruction that was wrought around this piece of furniture, it’s damn near a miracle that it still exists today. And woven in an out of this disaster is a published account of a romance between a young girl on her birthday and a soldier in the continental army. This lofty romance, together with a 19th century historians’ due diligence, and surviving contemporaneous letters, we can find ourselves present for a story of humanity amid wonton destruction… it’s one of those stories that reminds me at least that despite losing every worldly treasure we might possess… if we still have our loved ones, we still have everything. This is Romance and Revolution.Body:Quote:“One hundred and seven years ago, on the sixteenth of October, a perfect day of Indian-summer, a small village nestling under the Catskill mountains, was startled early in the morning by the cry: The British soldiers are coming!"The Brave Little Maid of the Revolution, by Mary Westbrook, 1884The cry that the British are coming belongs to more people than just Paul Revere. In the fall of 1777, Kingston, New York was a special target for the Royal Army trying to snuff out the American Revolution.Kingston was founded by the Dutch in the early colonial days on the banks of the Hudson river in the shadow of the Catskill mountains. It lays about 90 miles north of New York City. Kingston’s founders bought much of the land from the Esopus Indians… which gave way to a tradition of the city often being called Esopus.During the War for Independence, as New York city was well occupied by the British, Kingston was chosen as the first capital of the fledgling independent State of New York. Besides it being the state’s capital, Kingston was relatively inconsequential to the British war effort. There were no generals or soldiers stationed there, no barracks, no weapon cache. With all the soldiers off to war, it was mostly inhabited by wives, mothers, daughter, elderly, slaves and servants… all holding down the home front. All preparing to reap the fall harvest. So why Kingston? Well… first, it did have a certain symbolic nature to it as the capital of the rebel state. Once New York City was finally abandoned to the British, the State legislature convened in the Kingston Courthouse. There they ratified the State’ first constitution and elected its first Governor, George Clinton. George Washington would often use a particular building in Kingston known as “the senate house” as his headquarters. In that ho

There is power in a voice, but only if it is heard.  With rumor of the Royal Army being on their way, each whisper has potential value.  But few seldom speak completely freely.  The power of a voice is in how it expresses a desire.  There is no guarantee that those desires go fulfilled, and there are certainly ramifications either way.

Imagine you get the chance to go on a Grand Adventure … walking across the Arctic to the North Pole, or walking to the South Pole, or maybe climbing to the very top of Mount Everest. Which adventure would you choose? If you’re Adrian Hayes, you pick all three, and then do all three in world record time. Mr. Hayes has held the Three Poles Challenge world speed record, after he walked to the North Pole, and the South Pole, and climbed Mount Everest—in nineteen months and three days. It’s called the Three Poles Challenge because explorers try to reach the two farthest-apart points on earth, and the very highest point. Mr. Hayes tried out lots of different jobs on the way to becoming an adventurer. He worked as a bricklayer, a farmer, and a builder’s worker. He sang and played guitar in a rock band. He was a paramedic with the Special Air Services before going to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. As a British officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas, he served in Hong Kong and Brunei, and later, with the Royal Army of Oman. And he learned to speak Arabic and Nepali. After leaving military service and working as a sales director, Mr. Hayes began his climbing and trekking adventures. He followed up the Three Poles Challenge by crossing 1,600 kilometers of the Arabian Desert, on foot and on camel. This area is called the Empty Quarter and it’s the largest “sea” of sand in the world. In 2014, he and his team reached the top of K-2, the world’s second tallest mountain. K-2 “was my biggest challenge,” he says, because it is “way steeper” than nearby peaks, and its weather conditions are much worse. Climbing is his favorite adventure, he adds, because you’re in a different world. You have to stay really focused and think only of your next move. Mr. Hayes is the first Briton and only the third person in the world to reach the summit of the two highest mountains and to trek to both the North and South poles. His advice for kids who wonder what adventures they might have? “Write down your goals for the year,” a few months at a time. Figure out what your skills are. And if you’re not sure, ask your teachers or parents!
