Eoin Sheahan was joined by Kenyan Olympian Viola Cheptoo Lagat on Tuesday's Off The Ball. Earlier this month, the Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, a long-distance runner who had recently competed at the Olympic Games in Paris, was killed by her former boyfriend. In an act of incredible brutality, Dickson Ndiema, who has himself subsequently died, ambushed Cheptegei at her Kenyan home before pouring petrol on her and setting her alight. Far from an isolated incident, the murder of Rebecca Cheptegei is one of many such attacks against female athletes that has occurred in Kenya and certain surrounding countries. In 2021, following the murder of Kenyan Olympian and world-record holder Agnes Tirop, Viola Cheptoo Lagat was instrumental in the foundation of Tirop's Angels, an organisation dedicated to stand in unity against gender-based violence.Viola joined us on the show this evening to discuss Rebecca's brutal death, the challenges facing female athletes in Kenya, and why she believes the sporting governing bodies need to do more to help these women who are so vulnerable to manipulation, coercion and murder.
Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on June 3, 2022. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Kenya is famous for some of the fastest runners in the world, but recently, with the murder of Damaris Muthee Mutua and Agnes Tirop, that reputation's been tarnished. Their partners are the main suspects in each case. Now, a fellow female athlete is trying to bring attention to gender violence amongst Kenya's running elite. But is Kenya ready to hear what she has to say? In this episode: Joan Chelimo (@joan_chelimo), Kenyan mother, wife, and athlete Malcolm Webb (@MalcolmWebb), Senior Correspondent for Al Jazeera English TV, based in Nairobi, Kenya Ruth Bosibori, Kenyan gold medal runner Episode credits: This episode was updated by Tamara Khandaker. Mary Ngugi-Cooper has been a formidable force in the Kenyan marathon scene within the past decade. Mary's journey is not just about her remarkable achievements on the roads; it's about her unwavering commitment to empowering women through the sport she loves. In the wake of a tragic loss that shook the running community to its core, Mary took action by responding to the heartbreaking murder of Agnes Tirop by founding Nala Track Club in October of 2022. Named after the Swahili word for a powerful, successful woman, Nala Track Club is a sanctuary for female athletes. But it's more than just a club; it's a beacon of hope. Mary's vision extends beyond the finish line, providing not only a safe haven for young women to train but also covering housing and education costs for those in need. Additionally, Nala Track Club has pioneered a groundbreaking coaches training program, empowering women to lead and mentor the next generation of Kenyan athletes. Nike has come on board with the to assist with funding the girls' basic needs and in-residence scholarships to remove financial barriers Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of sport. It was super nice to chat with her just days before she went on to finish sixth in the Boston Marathon in 2:24:24. This week I'm bringing you my conversation with Viola Cheptoo, a professional runner for Adidas who is — if you're tuning in on marathon Monday, April 17 — perhaps running the Boston Marathon as you listen to this. She talks to us about the ebb and flow of her love for sport and running, originally motivated large in part by her brother, fellow elite Bernard Lagat. She talks about what it was like to debut in New York and come in second place, plus her big hopes for this year's 26.2 in Boston. However, a large part of our conversation focuses on sensitive topics including body image struggles, including what it was like to navigate bullying and abuse from a young age — both at school and within her home, as well as the tragedy surrounding the killing of her dear friend and fellow runner Agnes Tirop. Viola has made it her mission to speak out about domestic and gender-based violence as a result of the tragedy, through her work with a non-profit Tirop's Angels. Although a lot of the topics are difficult, Viola's outlook is truly one of optimism and hope. I'm so grateful that we were able to connect here in Boston leading up to such a big moment for her! I also do want to thank her sponsor Adidas for connecting us, and plug their AdiClub membership, which has a ton of benefits including free shipping and a 15% off voucher. Orlando Magic's Mo Bamba is one of the most recognisable names in basketball, and not just because rapper Sheck Wes named his viral song after him. He was born in New York City to parents who emigrated to the United States from Ivory Coast, and grandparents from Mali. He joins Sportshour's Caroline Barker to discuss the importance of keeping in touch with your roots and developing basketball in the place he says feels like "home".It's FA Cup third round weekend and Wrexham are the third-lowest ranked side left in the competition. It's been a whirlwind couple of seasons for The Red Dragons which has seen them taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Despite their newfound global fame, Wrexham have been a force to be reckoned with in the FA Cup for a long time. In 1992, they caused one of the greatest shocks in its history as they beat reigning league champions Arsenal. We hear from Mickey Thomas, who scored in that game 31 years ago. After the death of fellow runner Agnes Tirop, Kenya's half marathon world champion Mary Ngugi decided that enough was enough. She's taken it upon herself to try to create a safer environment for women and girls across the country. She tells us about setting up what is believed to be Kenya's first ever women's-only training camp. When 13-year-old Makar Marynoshenko left his home and his father in Ukraine because of the war with Russia, he also had to leave his football team Dynamo Kyiv, where he had ambitions of turning professional. This week's guest is Gabriela DeBues-Stafford, fresh off setting two Canadian records in two weeks in the indoor 3000m and 5000m. Even before her big breakout at BU this past weekend, Gabriela has been one of the world's best middle distance runners, finishing 5th in the 1500 at the Tokyo Olympics, with personal bests of 14:31 for 5k and 4:17 for the mile. We had a super engaging, fascinating conversation. She reflected on her Olympics performance, talked about her experience joining Bowerman Track Club in 2019, and the secrets to her success in her relationship with her coaches Jerry Schumacher and Shalane Flanagan. We also talked about her identity as a proud queer athlete, her reflections on the tragic 2021 death of Agnes Tirop, and, because it's Valentine's Day, the story of how she met her husband Rowan. Enjoy this conversation – especially with our new microphones, thanks to the support we get are lucky to get from the Citius Mag network – and happy Valentine's Day to all! If you love us as much as we love you, leave us a 5-star rating and your love letter in the reviews whenever you get your podcasts. On being an out and proud bisexual athlete: “Being bisexual comes with certain straight-passing privileges when I navigate the world, but on the flipside, there's a lot of bisexual erasure. When people see me and assume that I'm straight, they don't see me in my fullest sense. So I like to be loud and proud for all those young queer kids, to be a role model that I didn't necessarily have growing up, especially for people who are somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, seeing somebody who's more fluid in the way they identify is really powerful.” Reflecting on the Tokyo Olympics: “I'd give myself an A. A+ would've been a medal probably [….] with those top three, it was gonna take a really special day for me to get a medal. I just had to overcome so much self-doubt and so many health issues. It felt like the whole year I was playing catchup adapting to the program at BTC and dealing with my relapse of Graves' disease, and I don't think I realized at the time what a big ask that was.” On her relationship with BTC head coach Jerry Schumacher: “It's definitely a very healthy, very positive, even nurturing relationship. Jerry gives what every athlete needs and when I came to him I was very broken – mentally, emotionally, and physically scarred. He always holds me accountable, but I'm able to be very open with him and he's a very positive person.”
Today we have a surprise guest hostess (Marielle Hall!) as we talk to Viola Lagat, also known as Viola Cheptoo Lagat, who you may know as recent second place woman at the 2021 NYC Marathon (and maybe you've heard of one of her many talented runner siblings, Bernard Lagat?)She takes us through her family's deep running roots, what her training is like, how she spends time between the US and Kenya, her journey from being a1500m runner to nearly beating the Olympic Champion in her debut marathon, and her remembrance of her friend Agnes Tirop. Viola shares with us how close to home and ever present gender based violence, like what lead to Agnes' murder, is in Kenya and what she and other women are doing to help change things for the next generation.
We talk to Mary Wacera Ngugi, who most recently finished 3rd at the 2021 Boston Marathon, about her start in the sport, how Kenyan camp systems work and her journey to the marathon. You may be surprised to hear who is coaching her now! We also talk to Mary about her brave and impactful efforts to help women of Kenya find confidence and escape abusive marriages. She recently started the Womens Athletic Alliance as part of the movement that has gained volume in East Africa following the tragic murder of Agnes Tirop by her husband, she was one of the brightest young stars in the womens 10,000m. Mary has always seen the need to change how women are treated as property and told from a young age they don't matter and to be quiet. She hopes to provide a safe place of support, to celebrate the women athletes as people, provide legal aid and mentoring through the new Program. Many women from around the sports world have offered help and support and we are there behind her too. Womens Athletic Alliance founderFollow her here“The women deserve better. Being married to a person who loves and cares about me, I feel so much that my sisters and the women in Kenya should live a life like that; they should be treated better, they should be loved, they should be cared about and supported-they need the support not the control” -Mary Ngugi

Recorded during her hospital-hotel quarantine, now three-time Olympic steeplechaser Genevieve Gregson chats with Julian on her career, starting back from 2012 where she was an initial non-selection for the Olympics based on Athletics Australia selection and the gratitude for John Coates getting her across the line. Gen explains the quarantine and surgery arrangements that were made and how she's dealing with recovery so far, going into the type of surgery being made, and the support from fans and articles to support the comeback success stories. Gen & Julian do a deep dive on the technique, training and physicality required to succeed in the steeplechase, what made her proficient in the steeplechase, background and getting into the event at the University of Florida. From there they go into the recap of the Tokyo Olympic Steeplechase final, to that rupture on the last barrier and Gen's instant thoughts and reaction on impact, going through the wave of emotions in that water jump from the time and energy put in versus the rewards at the end, reliving the previous lowpoint at the crossroads in 2019, then getting into the Doha World Championships off cross training. From there they assess the reasoning behind Gen's injury history, combined with racing on form and frequency. This deep conversation wraps up how Gen goes about leveraging social media presence for branding and what resources are available for athletes, a peek into Gen's future transitioning into longer distances, her post-professional running and getting involved at a grassroots level and joining the team at Puma. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSdBvKKh8jp/ Patreon Link: https://www.patreon.com/insiderunningpodcast Opening and Closing Music is Undercover of my Skin by Benny Walker. www.bennywalkermusic.com For shoes or running apparel contact Julian at: https://www.facebook.com/therunningcompanyballarat/ Join the conversation at: https://www.facebook.com/insiderunningpodcast/ To donate and show your support for the show: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K9WQCZNA2KAN
