Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"We all have experiences of storms to a greater or lesser extent. When I first heard the recording of the storm in the Moroccan Agafay Desert, I started thinking about the times I had been in a storm. From dramatic storms across central Australia, monsoons in South-east Asia or lightning storms across the sea at my home of Portobello, Edinburgh. However, I kept coming back to the storms I experienced as a young child growing up in Derby. I have vivid memories of getting headaches just before a storm came and then my sisters and I changing into our swimming costumes as the storm hit so we could run around the garden in the rain."To put it simply, I wanted ‘Children of the Storm' to reflect my memory of these times, getting excited by the thunder and lightning, as first the wind would blow covering us with leaves and dirt and then dancing under the trees in the pouring rain getting soaked to the bone!"The field recording runs throughout the whole song emphasising the excitement and anticipation we felt as the thunder, lightning and rain came."Agafay desert storm reimagined by Simon Holmes.

"Living in Scotland and spending time in the Scottish Highlands, it is clear to me how integral water and waterways are to the landscape and existence. I sense that humanity has all but forgotten this. There seems to be a belief that we can treat these precious ecosystems in any way we see fit without a care that we may be harming or killing them. When I first heard the recording of the Lech River I was instantly drawn to the serenity of the river and the peaceful lapping of the water. The sounds truly emphasised the beauty and importance of this cherished environment. "This recording focusses on the final part of the Lech River before it flows into the Danube. The written description noted this section as the Lech's ‘quiet goodbye' and I felt this was a perfect focus for my composition. It made me consider if the river were to actually say goodbye and disappear forever due to human interference. What if the water were to flow from the Lech River into the Danube until every last drop had gone, never to return, leaving an arid, lifeless riverbed. I wanted ‘The Quiet Goodbye' to focus on this idea with a narrative of loss; a lament for a river that once was, a love song of sorts, a song of yearning for the departed."The satellite imagery shows the obvious changes in the water channel over time. It reminded me of the way human vessels bifurcate and degenerate, often becoming stenosed or occluded due to poor lifestyle choices. It struck me that the Lech River and surrounding landscape also suffered from these poor human choices and wanted this element to be part of the lyric."The song starts with voices moving over and through one another to convey the flowing sense of the river and lapping riverbank. This is followed by the piano which again, tries to convey the feel of water. The field recording is heard throughout acting as a reminder that the song is a constant longing for the river."Section of the river Lech reimagined by Simon Holmes and the Portobello Drone Choir. -------Flow is a creative exploration telling the story of a river through the power of sound. The project is a collaboration between the University of Padova and the University of Würzburg, with support from Cities and Memory. Explore the full project at https://citiesandmemory.com/flow.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

When I first heard "Mekana discussing a case of adultery", I really wanted to know more about the background to the recording. My research led me a to 1983 Granada Television Programme from the Disappearing Worlds Series which introduced the idea of "Benge", the poison oracle used by the Azande People of Central Africa to answer questions relating to, amongst others, infidelity. It was also vividly described by Evans-Pritchard as the process of administering poison to a baby chicken and waiting to see if it died or survived to determine guilt or innocence. Everything I watched or read focussed on the process of reaching this verdict, but there was never an exploration of the actual people involved. There must be a story behind these cases of forbidden love, in a culture where such feelings were prohibited and sometimes punishable by death. I wanted "Broken" to tell the story of this forbidden love, the feelings of loss the accused must have felt as they discovered they could never share a life together, but at the same time being indelibly connected throughout the rest of their lives. I try to paint that picture within the lyric whilst also acknowledging the cultural relevance of Benge with references of poison, feathers and confessions. The qualities of the wax recording are a perfect backdrop and can be consistently heard throughout. This helps to contextualise the themes of the song, particularly in terms of history, culture and tradition.Mekana discussing a case of adultery reimagined by Simon Holmes.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Whenever anyone speaks of Auschwitz, I always picture the iconic Arbeit Macht Frei Gate; an image linked to the atrocities associated with the holocaust. I have never been to Auschwitz, but when I heard the field recording I was instantly transported there. I found the sounds so evocative and tried to imagine how it must have felt for those individuals who were taken there in the 1940's, although this is ultimately impossible. What thoughts must have been going through their minds as they approached the gate? These were ordinary human beings, and I often wonder how another person could possibly dehumanise in such a brutal way as the Nazis did. "I wanted “The Bird' to consider these themes and think about the feelings of the people and whether they felt abandoned or simply resigned to their fate as they saw others being beaten or even killed. What must they have thought of the guards who treated them that way? I also wanted to try and represent the futility of such events by using the image of a bird flying, overlooking the camp, seeing the death and cruelty. What would the bird say of such sights if it could talk? I imagine they would be utterly bewildered by the pointlessness of it all.  "The sounds of the field recording are included throughout the whole of the song to ensure the focus is never lost, aiding the narrative and emphasising the importance of the lyric." Arbeit Macht Frei gate at Auschwitz reimagined by Simon Holmes.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

When I first listened to the recording of the depopulated village in Jerusalem, what really stood out was the bird song sounding like a voice of hope. I decided to use this as my focus as it was in keeping with the Echoes For Palestine Project theme 'hope, healing and a reimagined future'. I wrote the lyrics from the point of view of the village itself longing for inhabitants to return. The village grieved because of the silence and death, hoping that the homesick people would come back and live there once more. Ultimately, everyone needs a purpose and the village's purpose was to be a home once again. ‘Diamond I Am' considers these ideas, focussing on a village full of its people as somewhere beautiful; a diamond. It also recognises the need for people to be honest and talk about the plight of Palestine in order that it may heal. Jerusalem depopulated village recorded by Anders Vinjar, reimagined by Simon Holmes.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I spend a lot of time walking in the Scottish hills and associate certain sounds with my experiences of the landscape. There is one specific sound which I feel is synonymous with the Highlands; the roar of rutting deer. This evokes strong memories of mornings spent sitting on loch side rocks of a small Island called Carna whilst looking over to the hills of the Morvern Peninsula. As the sun rises, the distinctive sound begins, and I scan the horizon with my binoculars to search for silhouettes of stags on the mountain ridges.  "The recording of the rutting deer was probably the clearest and most powerful I had ever listened to, and I was instantly drawn to it. I imagined the societal structure of the herd, the etiquette of being allowed to participate in these ritualistic ruts and the point at which the young stags reach adulthood and are deemed worthy opponents for the alpha male.  "I wanted ‘Come of Age' to tell the story of the rut by introducing the older dominant alpha male and the younger maturing rival, whilst depicting them both travelling to the place of the conflict as they lock horns. The sounds of the rutting deer are included throughout the song to emphasise important elements of the narrative, introduce key characters and mark the point of battle." Red deer rut in Orleans forest, France reimagined by Simon Holmes.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"On first hearing the Notre Dame bells recording, I had a mental image of the iconic Cathedral standing majestically on the banks of the River Seine. I realised however, I knew very little about the bells themselves.  "Historically bells had a functional societal role delivering information and marking important events, not just noting the time or summoning the faithful to worship. The passing bell for instance conveyed coded messages announcing a persons death, as well as declaring their age and gender. We have now all but lost this important connection to the bells as populations grow and become more disparate where church buildings are no longer central to our lives. "The bell that can be heard in the recording is the oldest, and most iconic of Notre-Dame's bells called Emmanuel. I wanted ‘Beautiful Iron Friend' to be a simple love song to Emmanuel in an attempt to try and reconnect with this ancient artefact, thinking what emotions she felt whilst delivering her messages and wondering what historical insights she could impart if she were able. The original Notre Dame bells recording is also included to mark time throughout the track with the instruments emulating the striking of the bell." Recorded by Simon Holmes. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The first thing which struck me about the Cemetery Soundscape recording was the understated subtlety. It gave me a sense of peace as I listened; a peace I often find walking around cemeteries and graveyards in the UK. I thought about how cultural links with death has shaped these places and reflected on my own experiences of the death of family members and friends and feelings of grief and sorrow.  "It got me thinking about rituals of death and cultural ways of saying farewell to loved ones following their passing. I thought of the Zoroastrian tradition of exposing the body to the sun and birds of prey, the Ghats of Varanasi, Ancient Egyptian traditions found within the Book of the Dead or Western rituals of funeral, burial and cremation. The belief that these customs would prepare the soul for the next life and the associated importance of reincarnation and rebirth. "Whilst using the ‘Cemetery Soundscape' recording as a constant backdrop, ‘Rise' focusses on these death rituals and the comfort they offer, along with the hope that the dead find a ‘better' place as they ascend to the heavens." Indonesian cemetery soundscape reimagined by Simon Holmes.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"When I first considered the themes relevant to the Migration Sounds project I instantly thought of the oceans. Living in the UK, an Island surrounded by water, we often hear of people attempting to cross the channel to find safety, with frequent news reports of drownings due to unsafe, overcrowded boats. All too often, these people are dehumanised by simply being referred to as 'migrants', as if lesser individuals. "Living in Edinburgh, we are next to the sea where the mist, or ‘haar', often roles in over the water and only the silhouettes of people can be seen walking on the beach or swimming in the waves.  "When I first heard the lapping water sounds of the sample, I found myself visualising people through the haar getting into boats ready to make the treacherous crossing to a better life, knowing that some may be taken by the sea and not survive. I wanted my piece to reflect this scene and so in ‘Foam and Flow' I try to paint that picture. It was also important for the sample to continue through the whole piece, as a reminder that the water plays such a crucial role in these stories." Birdsong in Hamilton reimagined by Simon Holmes. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I moved to Scotland with my family around 10 years ago; a migration from England to North of the border. I had visited Scotland many times previously and always felt a longing to move here because of the sense of calm and freedom it gave me. Visits to the Hebridean Islands were central to these experiences, knowing the holiday had truly begun once the ferry had left port. I wanted my family to also experience this and so we now visit the Islands regularly. "This recording was made when we boarded the ferry from Scarinish on Tiree bound for Oban on the Scottish mainland. What can be heard really sums up the feelings of happiness and expectation I used to have coming to Scotland as a younger man. In the recording you can hear the ferry disembarking with sounds of the engine as well as the safety announcements over the tannoy. The authentic Scottish Islander accent of the female announcer followed by the Gaelic translation is of particular importance as it gives a true connection to place and community." "When I first think of Spring, I instantly hear birdsong filling the garden and woodlands, evoking a sense of renewal and rebirth. It also has as certain therapeutic quality giving me a feeling of relaxation and calm. When I heard the ‘Melody of Birds' recording, I had a sense of the birds being engaged in conversation and wondered what they might be discussing.  "Of course, Spring is the time when chicks hatch and fledge which got me thinking about what parent birds might say to their young to encourage them to leave, whilst at the same time becoming saddened because of the inevitability of an eventual empty nest.  "I wanted ‘Fledge My Child' to reflect this conversation, presenting the piece as a secular hymn representing that moment of leaving from the point of view of the parent bird.  "The lyrics attempt to mirror the birdsong as if directly translated, each verse representing a stage in that process of leaving; from teaching, encouraging, loving farewells and finally being left bereft and childless, yet overjoyed that the chicks have successfully grown and fledged."   Birds in Pat Busch Reserve, South Africa reimagined by Simon Holmes.

"The ‘Oxford Hot Air Balloon' sample was like nothing I had really heard before and I was instantly drawn to it. It had a certain tonality, colour and texture that I felt could be used as the basis for a composition. I wanted to use the sample in its entirety, perhaps as a pedal note running throughout any resultant piece of music. Along with the additional hint of ‘Autumn' I was taken to the skies and glens of the Scottish Highlands with images of soaring Golden Eagles. I found myself thinking of a place called Loch Earn where, rising from the water's edge during the autumn months is a forest of ever-changing autumnal colours. I really wanted to focus on this image as I wrote ‘I am the Air' using the ‘Oxford Hot Air Balloon' sample as a constant backdrop." Hot air balloon preparation reimagined by Simon Holmes.

One of the most consequential political shifts of 2022 was the election of several ‘teal' independent candidates to the federal parliament. The teals were mostly professional women who ran in traditionally Liberal-held seats, and campaigned on climate, integrity, and equality. Their election en masse was a shock to the Liberal party, and could herald a more permanent shift away from the major parties. Apart from their policy priorities, the other thing the teal candidates had in common was funding from Climate 200. The lobby group is led by Simon Holmes á Court, the son of Australia's first billionaire. In this interview from May, Holmes á Court gave us staggering insights into how the campaign for independent candidates was run. **Guest**: Founder of Climate 200, Simon Holmes à Court.

Simon Holmes à Court and his Climate 200, the body that provided funding for “teal” and some other independent candidates who promoted action on climate change, integrity and women's issues, had great success at the federal election. But will community candidates become a big force in November's Victorian poll and the March NSW election? In this podcast, Holmes à Court talks about the “enthusiasm” from the community independents movement about the desertion by voters of the major parties, and the mobilisation already under way in various areas to get behind candidates. But he stresses there will be new challenges to face in the two state campaigns. A major one is the more restrictive arrangements around funding, compared with the federal election. Community independents in the state elections will target frustrations in their local areas, but climate change and integrity will be strong themes of their campaigns. “In Victoria, our polling shows that climate is very high [in voters' minds] and people are frustrated with the pace of change in some of the Andrews government's actions there - we have the dirtiest grid in the country and a less certain plan for phasing out coal than New South Wales, for example”. Federally, teal candidates ran in Liberal seats. In Victoria, where there is a long-time Labor government, can we expect to see strong community independents also in Labor seats? “There is talk in Victoria that there might be some independents or minor parties challenging more in the outer suburbs and putting a lot of heat on the Andrews government, responding to the frustrations in those communities.”
