Alberta Election 2023 recap: UCP wins majority Danielle Smith's storm cloud of controversy was not enough to deter Alberta voters from handing her United Conservative Party a second term in government. By the time the UCP was celebrating a majority win shortly after 11 p.m., Elections Alberta counted only 1.1 million votes among 2.8 million eligible voters. The UCP was leading in 50 ridings, while the NDP was ahead in 37, putting Rachel Notley's New Democrats back in the opposition benches. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/alberta-election-2023-voters-elect-new-premier Trudeau plans record number of immigrants to Canada through 2024 Canada, a country that relies heavily on immigration... In her victory speech, newly re-elected Premier Danielle Smith vowed to stand up against federal policies that she says undermined Alberta, including ambitious green energy plans. Should the Trudeau government be worried?
Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party fought off a strong challenge from Rachel Notley and the NDP Monday night to win the Alberta election. The UCP stands to lose a few seats, and perhaps some cabinet ministers, even as the NDP hopes for major gains don't appear to have materialized. National Post reporter and producer of this podcast Tyler Dawson joins the show to discuss the results, the likely turning point for Smith and the UCP, and why it was taking so long to count ballots. The Construction Record Podcast – Episode 272: The 2023 Alberta election On this episode of The Construction Record podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Progressive Contractors Association president Paul de Jong, Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of Alberta president Mike Martens and Calgary Construction Association president Bill Black about what they want to see in terms of construction industry policy whether the United Conservative Party or the Alberta NDP win on May 29. Both de Jong and Martens reflected on some of the policies during the NDP's previous tenure that worked well with the industry, how construction adapted to the UCP's victory in 2019 and the subsequent uncertainty after Jason Kenney reigned as leader and was replaced by Danielle Smith. They also expressed what they'd like to see in terms of future policy whether Smith or NDP leader Rachel Notley take the reigns on May 29, what they're cautious about in terms of both party platforms. Black added no matter who wins the administrative bureaucracy will remain the same and that industry and government have to work together for the betterment of the province. You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. What do we know about their plans for the future of Alberta's energy industry? Next, we ask John to reflect on his 32 years at the forefront of climate change policy in Canada. How have corporate attitudes towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions changed over that time? What policy changes are needed for Canada to make big reductions in GHG emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050? This week on “It's Political” we check in on the Alberta election. NDP Leader Rachel Notley and UCP Leader Danielle Smith are in a hotly contested race and there's lots at stake for Albertans and all Canadians. First, Toronto Star reporter Kieran Leavitt brings us a report from Lethbridge, in a riding the NDP needs to win if it is to form government. Then, we'll hear from Abacus Data's David Coletto and from pollster Janet Brown about their competing polls and what they tell us about the state of the race in Alberta. Finally, we'll sit down with experienced conservative adviser Ken Bossenkool, from Meredith Boessenkool Policy Advisors, Graham Thomson, a long-time columnist in Alberta, and Lisa Young, political science professor at the University of Calgary, to talk about Thursday's debate and why this election is important. Clips this week were sourced from CPAC, Rachel Notley's YouTube channel, The U.C.P.'s YouTube channel, Danielle Smith's Twitter page, CBC, and CTV This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj. Kevin Sexton mixed the program. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.
The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.Alright … Michelle Rempel Garner is our guest this week, making her second appearance here on The Herle Burly! You all know the Conservative Member for Calgary Nose Hill: she's a vocal force, both within her own party, and in The House. Ms. Rempel Garner is a former cabinet minister in Stephen Harper's government. She's been an effective shadow minister for a number of portfolios and when I say she's a vocal force, part of the reason for that is her nuanced, long-form Substack writing on a variety of complex social and public policy issues. As Michelle says … “No talking points. No speech writers.”We're going to dive a little deeper into that today. Her observations on a changing media landscape, the role of the CBC, and how to connect with people in non-traditional ways. We'll get her thoughts on the current government from the perspective of an opposition MP.We'll also get into the current state of the Conservative Party of Canada, and how she feels about leadership in general … both Poilievre's and Trudeau's.And finally, we'll get her observations on the Alberta Election!Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. The only televised debate of the 2023 Alberta Election goes down tonight. What can we expect from Danielle Smith and Rachel Notley? Who has the upper hand? Does it even matter? Furthermore, does anybody even recognize the United Conservative Party anymore? 2:00 | Our Group Chat Round Table reconvenes with Katherine O'Neill, Harman Kandola, and Jenny Adams, veterans of multiple conservative campaigns. We open with observations on what sets this debate apart from any other in Alberta history. Then, our panelists discuss the abhorrent comments from UCP candidate Jennifer Johnson about gender minority students, and what an appropriate response from Danielle Smith looks like. We look back at the PC/WRP merger (Katherine was PC Party president at the time), and how that set the table for today's version of the UCP. Our panel discusses Rob Anderson (Smith's top advisor) defending a far-right commentator, NDP candidate Kevin Van Tighem's comments about the oil and gas industry, and polling discrepancies out of Calgary. All in all, this is an hour of Alberta election coverage you won't want to miss! Alberta's 31st election campaign officially kicked off with UCP leader Danielle Smith promising a flood of tax relief measures if she is reelected while NDP leader Rachel Notley says she'll protect Albertans' pensions and fix the healthcare crisis. Also, a Federal NDP MP tries to cancel a French-British Columbian historical figure Father Edmond Maillard saying that using his name in the title of a new electoral riding is “unconscionable.” Next, Danielle Smith is declining to say whether she'll continue to pursue legal action against CBC News after she demanded the state broadcaster retract a story about her office having contact with Justice officials over charges related to the Coutts border blockade. Lastly, a new report by the Globe and Mail reignites the story on foreign election interference after revelations show that China's intelligence targeted Conservative MP Michael Chong for condemning the oppression of Uyghur Muslims.
