Eastern redcedar control is becoming one of Oklahoma's biggest land, water, and wildfire issues—and this episode explains how the Oklahoma Conservation Commission is turning concern into action. John Weir, Laura Goodman Ph.D., and Mark Turner Ph.D. visit with Trey Lam and Trampas Tripp about the Terry Peach North Canadian Watershed Restoration Pilot Project, a program designed to reduce invasive woody species, protect rural communities, improve rangeland health, and put more water back into Oklahoma soils and streams. The conversation covers how cedar control moved from years of talk to funded work on the ground, including brush-free zones around towns and infrastructure, prescribed fire training with rural fire departments, cost-share programs for landowners, and research measuring soil moisture, forage recovery, wildlife response, and wildfire risk. The episode makes one thing clear: managing cedars is not just about removing trees—it is about protecting rural lives, homes, grasslands, water supplies, wildlife habitat, and the future of working lands.

Recorded LIVE! on the Harbor Terrace at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego, Mike Palmer is joined by Dr. Steven Taylor, Policy Director and Senior Fellow for Economic Mobility at Stand Together Trust. Steve brings a unique perspective to the table, combining a national philanthropic lens with his roles on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the National Advisory Committee for Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI). The conversation captures the shifting energy of the summit, moving away from the peak of AI hype toward what Steve calls "optimistic skepticism" - a more mature look at how technology can practically transform learning while remaining grounded in the reality of its current limitations. The discussion explores the potential of AI to revolutionize the K-12 experience, using examples like Austin's Alpha School to show how personalized learning can compress the school day, allowing students more time to pursue their passions. Steve and Mike tackle the difficult questions of equity and the "risk capital" required to bring high-cost innovations to scale. Then we pivot to the higher education landscape, where Steve emphasizes the need to dignify non-degree pathways. He shares insights from Virginia's FastForward program, a pay-for-performance model that has successfully moved residents into high-demand fields through short-term credentials, proving that ROI isn't just a metric for four-year degrees. As the conversation turns to the future of work, Steve expresses concern over the potential displacement of entry-level roles—the "desk jockey" jobs that traditionally provide young people with essential social capital and early career experience. He argues that our labor laws are antiquated and must evolve to support a more flexible, AI-driven workforce that favors 1099 and gig-based contributions. From the necessity of correcting AI's erroneous outputs to the complexities of AI-driven hiring and the debate over universal basic income, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the policy and philanthropic shifts needed to ensure everyone can contribute to a changing economy. Most salon owners set up their booking software once and never go back. The descriptions are outdated, the services do not reflect the brand anymore, and there is revenue sitting quietly in the background that nobody is capturing. Sound familiar? In this Mini Moment, Jen sits down with Sherri from Timely to talk about why an annual audit of your salon software is one of the most underrated things you can do for your business. And why the new Timely add-ons feature might just be the thing that changes how you think about upselling forever.Because here is the thing. The best add-on conversation is the one you never have to have out loud. When your software is set up properly, it does the prompting for you. Your clients get the nudge at the right moment, they feel in control of their choices, and you get the revenue without the awkward middle bit. What we coverWhy auditing your salon software once a year is non negotiableHow misaligned service descriptions can disconnect your brand experienceThe new Timely add-ons feature and how it works for your businessLetting technology do the upselling so you do not have toWhy giving clients ownership of their booking increases add-on uptakeHow solo operators can use software to reduce overwhelmAI, social media and the future of working smarter not harderWhy having fun on Instagram is actually a strategyYour software should be working while you are behind the chair. And Legalweek talk. ------ It was Legalweek last week, and we discuss the big happenings from the show -- which is pretty much all AI talk -- but while we saw splashy product announcements about the future of working as a lawyer within an AI-enhanced workflow, an assistant U.S. Attorney got bounced from the job for letting AI run too much of the workflow. But the most imaginative large language models wouldn't have predicted opening a federal judicial opinion with the phrase "swinging dicks." That takes a special level of deranged that's pure Judge Lawrence VanDyke. The certified non-qualified occupant of a Ninth Circuit seat kicked off an official taxpayer funded rant about wokeness framed as vulgar trolling to appeal to the White House. His colleagues -- most of them anyway -- issued a plea for decorum, that went basically nowhere.
The Future of Working Motherhood: Flexibility, Ambition, and Real Support After Maternity LeaveAmy Pons hosts Alexa Starks, maternity leave coach and founder of Executive Moms, to discuss reshaping maternity leave and return-to-work experiences and the findings from Executive Moms' Future of Working Motherhood 2026 report. They reflect on the need to deconstruct harmful workplace systems, the lack of support for mothers returning from leave, and how simple supports like mentorship can improve retention. Alexa shares key data: 40% of women leave their job within a year of returning from maternity leave, yet 97% would stay if truly supported; the report also found no “ambition gap,” with mothers reporting equal or greater ambition after having kids. A major takeaway was that flexible work design (remote/hybrid/part-time) mattered more than longer leave. This week on Labor History Today, we're marking the 50th anniversary of the Walter P. Reuther Library building at Wayne State University with a special episode from our friends at Tales from the Reuther Library. Hosts Dan Golodner and Troy Eller English revisit the origins of one of the nation's premier labor archives, sharing stories from its early days and reflecting on why preserving labor history remains vital in a moment of renewed attacks on worker rights. As part of the celebration, they sit down with Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, whose union recently placed its records with the Reuther. Nelson discusses the history and evolution of the flight attendant profession, the fights that shaped it, and why knowing our past is essential to winning today's battles. Plus, on Labor History in 2:00: the 2012 walkout by more than 100 New York City fast food workers that helped spark a movement. A NOTE TO OUR LISTENERS: Recently we passed the 100,000-download mark here at Labor History Today. Now, we don't pay a whole lot of attention to metrics and all that sort of stuff; we don't have sponsors and we've been putting the show together every week since 2017 because – like Sara Nelson – we believe that the key to the future of working people and their unions lies in knowing about our past struggles. Still, it's nice to know that so many of you are listening out there; so here's a promise: you keep listening and we'll keep putting out the show. And if you get a chance, share the show with a colleague, friend or family and what the hell, let's rack up another hundred thousand downloads even quicker! This season, we are exploring the experience of women in the workplace, especially here in Utah. In a recent study published by Wallet Hub, Utah ranked as the worst state for women's equality. The study put Utah last for women in education and health and 49th in both political empowerment and workplace environment for women. The study also found that the income gap between men and women was worse in Utah than in any other state and that Utah is seriously lacking when it comes to women in executive leadership positions. Here to help us make sense of the numbers and to paint a picture of the landscape for professional women in Utah and beyond are Dr. Susan Madsen and Nubia Peña. Dr. Susan Madsen is the founding director of the Utah Women & Leadership Program and the inaugural Karen Haight Huntsman Endowed Professor of Leadership at Utah State University, and Nubia Peña is the Senior Advisor of Equity and Opportunity for the Cox/Henderson Administration and the director for the Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs.Listen to this dynamic conversation as these three women discuss women who live at the intersection of sexism and other marginalized communities, working on making workplace culture a more intentional product, and their shared optimism for the future of working women in Utah.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:Turning gaps to opportunities[10:13] Nubia Peña: I created the opportunity framework for our team that follows a three-pronged approach, which is data-informed, opportunity-driven, and people-inspired. By using the data to understand employee climate, culture, and satisfaction, we can then identify the gaps that may cause us to lose great talent to other companies. And those gaps would then be turned into opportunities so that we better serve our employees, which are our most important assets. So, we really want to tell the story of Utah. While we know that there are challenges, we also know that there are some great successes coming out of our industry and corporate leaders. We know that Utah is probably, and most likely, in the next five to ten years, going to be leading for being some of the best and family-friendliest corporations in the nation. The power of collaboration in leadership[15:48] Dr. Susan Madsen: Don't just do a side women's network; connect with your leadership team, align your goals with the goals of the company, be strategic, and help your leaders understand how important this is. And I'll tell you, there's numbers, research, and there's the business case. It's going on and on that when men and women work together in more equal numbers on teams, in leadership roles in the C-suite, on corporate boards, there are so many benefits for the teams, for the individuals, for the communities, but then in society as well. When you learn things at work, you take them to your family, your congregations, and your community.Utah's unique approach to empowering women in the workforce[21:59] Dr. Susan Madsen: Utah is unique, and the leaders of this, as we're calling it in A Bolder Way Forward, are looking even differently than other states. There are so many women who want to work professionally but want to work part-time; that is unique. And so the leaders in that spoke and another one on workforce development are working on helping companies understand that women can work part-time and contribute, and it can benefit everyone involved.Utah way: Having the value of choice for women[18:14] Nubia Peña: Our desire in championing the beauty of all of these pathways that can create thriving for women in the workforce and women to choose to stay at home is the value of choice. And as we partner with our corporate leaders with our legislative sector, when we're thinking about all the people that are needed to create the type of state where there is an abundance of opportunities, there is something that many of us know, which is called the Utah way. And we think differently and out of the box.Show Links:Susan Madsen | Huntsman | USUSusan R. MadsenSusan R. Our latest poll is out, and we're breaking down the data on Trump's legal woes, Biden's approval rating, and the 2024 election. Then, we're switching gears to something more otherworldly... aliens. With the latest House hearings on ETs, we are looking at Americans' very weird and somewhat confounding views on such questions as, have aliens visited, are UFOs spaceships, and is the U.S. Government covering it all up? But maybe best of all...are clients friendly? Finally, we finish with a look to the past about the future of working. What would you say to a three-day workweek?
