Six months ago, MAGA world was strutting around with their chests puffed out. But now, many of them are having a blue Christmas over the infighting, the economy, the DOJ's inability to deliver revenge, and Trump's cover-up of child sex traffickers—one of the key things they really cared about. All Trump can think to do is plaster his name on another large object, including most recently a new fleet of warships. Plus, the bourbon shutdown, Bari's getting burned by Canada also airing "60 Minutes," the president could move Ghislaine out of her cushy prison, and Epstein in his alleged letter to Larry Nassar really sounds like "Access Hollywood" Trump.  Tom Nichols joins Tim Miller. SEASON 3 EPISODE 133: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: It's still just at the passive-aggressive stage but Elon Musk has not only broken with Trump and ghosted Trump, now he has re-tweeted someone telling MAGAs to go to the comments at Fox News and read how "almost every comment is in agreement with Elon – to see so many vehemently disagreeing with Trump is wild.” This is not going to end well. Pass the popcorn. How is that POSSIBLE? Who could have EVER forseen that relying on a chemical’d-up, psychologically-impaired, persistent over-promising, compulsive sperm donor who may have been the victim of a botched penile implant, could be a BAD thing. Musk has ghosted Trump and is starting to attack Trump - and Trump can’t say a word because unless Musk bankrolls it Trump won’t be able to subvert the constitution and run for a third term – and unless Musk bankrolls it a Trump successor will never get off the ground and unless Musk bankrolls it the Republicans will lose the House next year AND maybe the Senate too. All Trump has been able to do is the really sad sight of a screenshot of a Musk tweet praising Trump. It’s from May 28th. THIS is the BEST part: Trump cannot trash Musk. As much as he wants to, as much as Musk attacks the House for Trump’s budget bill and its 2-point-4 trillion dollar add to the deficit -without mentioning Trump even though it’s TRUMP’S bill and those idiots in the House like Mike Johnson are just Trump’s SLAVES, as much as Musk is still protecting Trump from himself, Trump has to do the most difficult thing in the world: shut himself up. Keep his mouth shut. OTHER HEADLINES: Trump is now trying to sabotage Columbia's accreditation. It's not too late, Claire, break your deal and sue him for $100 Trillion. Trump the Russian simp also says he talked to Putin about Ukraine and Putin says he'll have to avenge the airbase attacks (what is he going to do? Start bombing Ukrainian cities?) A Republican senator actually asks 'What WAS we ranked" in reading and arithmetic in 1979. And Karoline Leavitt has the yips: she has now called Trump "Chump" three times in the last week. B-Block (25:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Steven Cheung wants you to ignore the legacy media. To prove why, he attaches a clip from...CNN. CNN's Abby Phillip lets a putz named Chris Sununu to compare Trump's post about Biden being executed/cloned to people insisting there are back-up Melanias. And on the same topic somebody named Kaylee McGhee White goes on Fox and insists the nation might've been run by "a cable" of unelected White House officials. C-Block (35:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Tomorrow's the anniversary of the day the president of MSNBC wanted to postpone breaking news to do anniversary programming he had dedicated himself to. The breaking news? Ronald Reagan had just died. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Chaos Doctrine: Why Trump's America is a House of Cards

Best of Nerds for Yang

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2025 64:18

Hello nerds,It's been a while since my last live stream, but this conversation was too important to pass up. I recently sat down with a political insider who goes by the handle Maine Wonk on Twitter. He's an Obama-era campaign veteran turned policy analyst who, like many of us, has spent the past few years trying to make sense of the increasingly chaotic state of American politics. We covered a lot of ground—from Trump's governing style to Biden's decision to run again, the future of the Democratic Party, and the historical parallels that suggest we may be on the cusp of another major political realignment. It was a sobering, insightful, and at times even hopeful discussion.Let's break it down.Trump's Chaos Doctrine: Governing as a Sales PitchMaine Wonk didn't mince words when describing Trump's leadership style. He called it what it is: a performance, not governance.“All Trump wants is a virtual win. He doesn't care about the quality of the deal. He just wants to get on TV and tell his base that he got one.”This isn't new. Trump has always approached politics like a business deal in which he can create an illusion of success, regardless of the actual impact on policy or the country. The tariffs fiasco is a prime example—he'll declare a hardline stance one day, only to capitulate the next after a single phone call.“It's the worst negotiation tactic ever. He demands everything, freaks out the markets, and then backs down immediately, thinking nobody will notice.”The problem? This volatility isn't just a Trump quirk—it's now the modus operandi of the Republican Party. They thrive on chaos, and they've become experts at weaponizing it.Democrats Need to Stop Swinging at Every PitchOne of the most interesting takeaways from our conversation was the idea that Democrats need to stop reacting to Trump's every move.“Hakeem Jeffries said it best—don't swing at every pitch. Trump's entire playbook is to flood the zone with nonsense so no one can focus on any one scandal or failure for too long.”In other words, Democrats shouldn't waste energy chasing every inflammatory tweet or ridiculous claim. Instead, they should let Republicans bear the burden of governing—and watch as their own base turns on them.“The first time since 1928 that one party has controlled the White House, Senate, House, Supreme Court, governorships, and state legislatures. You know what happened after that? Hoover. And then FDR.”History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme. The last time the GOP held this much power, they tanked the economy with protectionist policies and isolationism. Two years later, Democrats swept into power, and FDR reshaped American politics for a generation.Biden's Biggest Mistake: Not Being a Bridge PresidentMaine Wonk had some sharp criticism for Biden's decision to seek re-election.“If he had announced in 2020 that he was only going to serve one term, we wouldn't be in this mess. We could have had a wide-open primary, given the party a chance to reset, and built a stronger bench.”Instead, Democrats were left scrambling in 2024, which left voters uninspired and allowed Trump to waltz back into the White House. Worse, it created a situation where Kamala Harris—who had little opportunity to define her own vision—was forced into an impossible position.“Kamala had 100 days. Trump had four years to prepare. That's the difference.”The Democratic Bench: Who's Next? While some despair about the lack of strong Democratic candidates, Maine Wonk is optimistic. He sees potential in several rising stars:* Andy Beshear (Kentucky) – A Democrat who won in deep red territory.* Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan) – A proven leader who knows how to win swing states.* Pete Buttigieg – A master communicator with deep policy knowledge.* Wes Moore (Maryland) – A fresh face with a compelling personal story. But the biggest wildcard? Someone we're not talking about yet.“Nobody saw Barack Obama coming in 2007. Someone will emerge. They always do.”The Future of the Democratic Party: Stop the Navel-GazingOne of the most blunt moments of our conversation came when discussing the Democratic Party's messaging problem.“We need to stop obsessing over identity politics. Not because those issues don't matter, but because they're not the foundation of a winning coalition.”Instead, he argued, Democrats need to refocus on economic populism, government efficiency, and national security. Ironically, these are areas where they already hold the high ground—but they often fail to communicate it effectively.“Democrats are now the party of the military and democracy. Republicans are the party of Putin. Think about that shift.”Predictions for 2026: The House Flips BlueDespite the bleakness of the moment, Maine Wonk believes the midterms will be a reckoning for the GOP.“Republicans own every part of the government right now. They can't blame Biden anymore. The economy will be worse, wages will be down, inflation will be up—and they'll have to run on that record.”If Democrats play their cards right, they will take back the House in 2026, setting the stage for a major comeback in 2028.Final Thoughts: Focus on What MattersTo wrap up, here's what I'll leave you with:* Ignore the noise. Judge Trump on his actual results, not his tweets. Is the economy better? Is the deficit down? Are wages up? That's what matters.* Democrats need to embrace smart, competent governance. No more over-intellectualizing. No more purity tests. Solve problems. Get things done.* Watch Pete Buttigieg. Call it a hunch, but I think he's going places. If you found this discussion valuable, consider supporting my work by becoming a YouTube channel member. The numbers may reflect this, but public sentiment doesn't. When you consider everything moving in Trump's direction and away from Biden and Democrats you get a real feel for what's happening. All Trump has to do is be mediocre and Republicans will rule for at least a decade. But when he does what he does, Republicans can set that stage for the next 75 years at least. This week on the Mark Levin Show, Kamala Harris spent a week preparing for the debate with Donald Trump because she needs to be scripted in order to hide her Marxist Islamist chameleon true self. The media are ecstatic over Tuesday night's debate and feel like Kamala Harris delivered a knockout punch to Donald Trump because to Harris this was a debate to her real constituency: the media. Harris was trained for this debate to appeal to the media that she has been avoiding and came ready with her cheap shots and 25 lies about Trump. We have no idea what Harris's plans are for crime, immigration, or tackling inflation and reducing the prices of things like food, gasoline, vehicles, and housing – all things that affect the American people. The new debate in the media is whether there should be a second debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. All Trump talks about in his rallies and the debates are the issues, but all Kamala does is avoid talking about the issues whether it's to the media or the American voters who still do not know what she stands for. Ronald Reagan was hated by the same people who hate Trump today, including the Bushes, Cheneys, RINO Republicans, and the media. It is time for us to be selfish and vote for the person who will return our country and the world to normalcy, and that person is Donald Trump. Also, Israel is in a very difficult position in the Middle East surrounded by terrorist groups and countries that want to destroy them, and they are all aided by the Biden/Harris administration. Harris is the biggest hater of Israel to ever run for president because she is an Islamist. Later, WREC radio host Ben Ferguson fills in for Mark. Trump has a new economic plan that is an addition to his plans to not tax tips or social security, and that is to not tax overtime. Harris wants you to be poorer so you need to rely on the government for everything to survive. Trump is the biggest threat to the Democrat party because under his presidency we had the lowest unemployment for a number of groups who are usually overwhelming supporters of the Democrat party. He knew two years ago he could not beat Joe Biden, just ask the folks in Ukraine. He was impeached for bribing a country to do a false investigation on Hunter Biden, but they refused. All year the polls show him behind Biden. He has no COVID plan. To date, over 230,000 Americans have died as a result of Trump’s lack of caring for the American people. Additionally, the economy is in a recession, the highest unemployment rate, lowest GDP, he is taking away affordable health care, and the list goes on. Record numbers, 75 million, of people have voted early or by mail-in ballots. It is expected to be the largest voter turnout in history.None of this matters. Do you know why? Trump talks about his plan at his rallies. Trump says "We have an advantage if we go back to Congress. Does everyone understand that? I think it's 26 to 22 or something,” No one knows what he is talking about. Trump can lose the popular vote by a landslide. He knows he is going to lose. All he must do is stop a couple of states from deciding the election before December 14, 2020. That is the day the “electoral college” votes. How does he do that? He has been laying the groundwork for months. He continually cast doubt on mail-in ballots. Trump is currently involved in litigation with seven states over mail-in ballots. It does not matter if he is right or wrong with mail-in ballots. All he has to do is litigate long enough to keep a state from declaring a winner and voting on December 14, 2020, in the electoral college.Currently, the polling shows Biden with 290 and Trump with 163 electoral votes. Once a candidate reaches 270 electoral votes, they win the election. All Trump has to do is keep Biden from reaching 270 votes. If no candidate reaches 270 votes, the election goes to the House of Representatives.Once the election results are determined, which could take weeks, all Trump needs to do is keep two are three states from declaring a winner by December 14, 2020. If any state does not declare a winner by then, the state is not allowed to vote in the electoral college. All Trump needs to do is stop two or three states from voting in the electoral college. Keep two or three states in court litigating mail-in ballots. Then the vote then goes to the House of Representatives. Once in the House, each state gets one vote, from their party, for a total of 50 votes. All Trump needs to remain in power is 26 votes. Currently, states are controlled by more Republicans so he would win and remain the President. Good night, and good luck.

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Well, today just might be the wrap up of the Senators’ question period in Donald Trump’s show trial. David Waldman and Greg Dworkin review the last 8 hours and preview the next: Caesar, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Hussein, and Trump. All out there prioritizing their nation’s interests over their own, probably. In fact, it is almost impossible for one to determine where the United States ends and Donald Trump begins. And that one would be Alan Dershowitz, ever since he and most of the Republican conference became anti-woke... All Trump needs is 34 votes. As those are Republican votes, they could add up to maybe 7% of the US population. Republicans pretend to want witnesses, which they could vote for if they would like. Democrats can try to straighten people out, readdress the facts, play by the rules, but the endgame is so clear Republicans have been playing their bench, heckling the umpire/judge, and just making stuff up without really a care, as if they actually believe this will be all over by the end of this week. Trump people were aware that the Trump superfan man of mystery trailing Ambassador Yovanovitch was crazy, but worried that he might be the wrong kind of crazy.  Eh, maybe we’ll all be dead by the weekend from the beer flu. Smart people are working on fixing things, and might be in the lead. Of course, dumb people are also hard at work. You know what’s worse than the Wuhan flu? The regular flu.

Jussie Smollett and the damage done to Chicago. The corrupted version of freedom of association that they're pedaling these days. When you thought you'd heard it all, separate honeymoons? Keith Olbermann is still the worst. A new republican caucus is in town, with their very own budget. What does the Mueller report say? All Trump did was win, his latest crowd draw in Michigan speaks to that.

So a lot to unpack in early 2019, the GOP is all wadded up about AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) and her ideas. A strong woman with ideas is a fear of the GOP in Indiana and in DC. I think a big reason why AOC is so much better at politics than so many older, more experienced Democrats is that she's never known a world where Republicans aren't cartoonish villains who reliably act in bad faith. She treats them as what they are, the fools we all see them as. As we go into another week of a record-breaking Trump Gov Shut-down we want to be sure you understand that the Republican-controlled Senate could vote to reopen the government right now if they simply passed the exact same bill that they unanimously passed a few weeks ago. Senate Majority leader McConnell refuses to hold a vote. There is also new news in mid-January that President Trump is under a criminal investigation as he is an alleged asset of the Russian government. the fact that the rest of the GOP continues to protect him rather than the country, compounds the shocking nature of that story. Think about it. The president could be a Russian asset and they seek to cover it up to advance narrow partisan interests. The GOP in the state of Indiana, silent on this issue, the GOP in DC is silent on this issue, they are Appalling and Complicit. Ok back to the border wall, All they - the Senate- have to do is vote for a bill they already all voted for... The real border crisis is due to lack of resources to process asylum requests of thousands of mostly women and children coming to the U.S. to escape violence in Central America, under the legal immigration system. Fixing this would cost a fraction of the cost of building a wall. Trump using the word “strike” during this Trump Government Shut-Down. It is his way of trying to blame the government shut down on government employees and away from himself, even though he said the shutdown will be on him. As usual he refuses to take responsibility for his actions. Sarah Sanders tells Chris Wallace that DHS has apprehended 4,000 terrorists at the border, she is corrected by Wallace, that it is mainly at airports. It goes without saying, but if 4,000 terrorists were apprehended in airports (per SHS’s talking points), it might not be the best idea to withhold pay from TSA agents who, you know, protect airports. Robert Reich former Labor Secretary stated in early January. Trump's Wall and shutdown are more deflection, distraction, and division -- so we're not hearing about "Individual 1," Mattis resignation in protest, cabinet of lobbyists, Michael Cohen, more favors to Putin, Kim's nukes, trade wars. Trump plays the press like a grand piano. Steven Beschloss said this - Let's be clear: All Trump wants is to build his dumb wall. This is not responding to a crisis. This is not about border security. This is about feeding his own ego & building a monument for himself. The impact on millions of Americans harmed by a shutdown? He could not care less. Mitch McConnell voted 6 times to raise his own pay and 15 times against raising the minimum wage. Kentucky has voted for him for 34 years making him the 11th richest senator, while Kentucky remains the 7th poorest state. Kentucky - PLEASE - repeal & replace McConnell in 2020... So here is the GOP plan for Government in 2019 - this is from NYT reporter Eric Lipton - As of Thursday, 1/3/2019 the DOD will be run by a former senior Boeing executive. EPA is run by a former coal lobbyist. HHS is run by a former pharmaceutical lobbyist. And the department of the Interior will be run by a former oil-industry lobbyist. Welcome to how the GOP wants to run government, right into the dirt. From Katie Rosa - “The guy who couldn't get a security clearance? The guy who became US citizen in 2012 and has worked ever since to dismantle our system of government? The guy that told a room full of Republicans that "Liberals have no idea how much we can hurt them?" Fu** that guy. From Nate Lerner 1/2/19 Trump & Republicans had 2 years to pass meaningful legislation, but all they did was give a massive tax break to corporations, which benefited only executives & investors, not the workers. Time for the party with actual ideas & policy solutions to take over. #BlueWave2020 Republicans just officially ended the 3-year-long investigation into Hillary’s emails. They found nothing & wasted millions. In half the time, Mueller has already brought over 200 criminal charges against 38 people/organizations. AND he recouped $48 million for the government. 45 ended 2018 by calling it “The year of the worker” Wrong again. Wages have gone nowhere, adjusted for inflation. Most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Unions are under attack. The only people who have done well are the Wall St. investors and corporate execs who’ve padded their nests with bonuses and buybacks.

It's been over a week since I did my last podcast there's been a lot of economic news - almost all bad The markets have been under pressure - we're back down near the mini-Black Monday lows, solidly in correction mode The pressure on international markets has been greater Yet the vast majority of economists expect the Fed to raise interest rates by December This would really mean last minute - as the Fed's messaging hints at an interest rate hike by the end of the year If you look at the Fed's reasons it listed were: Weakness in overseas economies Lack of inflation, as the Fed measures it Increased improvement in the labor markets Why would the Fed move if all these concerns still exist? The answer is, it would not move No one wants to connect the obvious dots When the Fed refused to rule out an interest rate hike in October or December it might have been the worst thing for the markets because it is admitting it is considering kicking the economy when it is down Initially I thought the Fed would indiciate a dovish hold, but they opted for a hawkish hold, which exacerbates the issues with the markets, as the hike is already priced in International markets assume America can handle higher interest rates; but the Fed is still talking up the economy to send the message that the U.S. can handle higher rates, even though it can't I discussed this at length in my recently released video of my address in Jackson Hole, Wyoming I really want discuss in today's video two people who are in the news: Donald Trump and Carl Icahn Trump was on 60 Minutes this week and Carl Icahn recently released a video called, 'Danger Ahead' Trump's performance really hit the ball out of the park with his delivery, not that I agree with everything he said The typical voter will buy his bill of goods The interview was a commercial for Donald Trump in which he promises everything to everybody The promises to cut taxes on everyone but the hated hedge fund managers He promises to repeal and replace Obamacare with something even better and still insure everybody He promises to save Social Security He promises to grow the economy To the average voter, who doesn't really understand economics, he sounds like he can pull it off He sounds optimistic about what the country can be like if he is elected president The economy will grow because jobs will come back from overseas How is he going to do that? I don't know, but it doesn't matter He says it in a way that people are going to believe it Who will argue against it? He is not singling out any one interest group that will suffer His performance was brilliant, even though much if what he promises is impossible His tax message resonates because currently the government uses high corporate taxes so that special interests groups can be given favors by Congress, and higher taxes are held over the heads of those who do not buy them off with votes With lower corporate taxes, the politicians lose that leverage Trump doesn't need these special interest votes because he's spending his own money All Trump needs to do is get the nomination, then the Republican Party will support his Presidential Campaign His campaign for the nomination has been largely fueled by publicity He is running a better campaign in light of public perception Trump is throwing light on the problems who the average guy really feel - even if he is pie and the sky Carl Icahn is in the news because he could be Treasury Secretary if Trump is elected, and he would probably not be that bad His new video, calledDanger Ahead" starts out as a commercial for Donald Trump, giving him even more publicity, but in the second half of the video he addresses the real root of the problem in the U.S. economy He addresses our bubble economy and correctly blames the Fed He points out that quantitative easing and zero percent interest rates ...
