Send us a textIn this episode, we look at what is arguably an impressive achievement by both President Bill Clinton and Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole. The 1993 Budget Bill accomplished several goals of the new Clinton Administration including a tax increase on the middle class. That money funded up several programs Clinton had wanted to see implemented. IT could be argued that it played a role in the economic boom to come and then again there is an argument against it too. By ending the Cold War under the Bush Administration much of the economic boom and deficit reduction came as that expense had gone away. Which is why Bob Dole's role is also an achievement worth bragging about. Dole and the Republicans opposed the middle class tax increase. This led to a huge debate in 1993 and in the end Bob Dole was able to prevent every Republican in congress from voting for the Budget Bill. A victory for him, and in doing so in 1993, he was able to set the stage for the 1994 mid term elections that would be historic for the Republican Party.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

In addition to protecting children from internet pornography—shouldn't we protect them from seeing congress critters shamelessly sucking up to Trump and publicly prostituting themselves to billionaires?Consider the raw obscenity of the GOP ramming its gross budget bill into law. Even many conservatives gagged at the depravity of forcibly taking food stamps and Medicaid from millions of everyday people, just so a few extremely rich elites can satisfy their insatiable lust for tax breaks. The stench of greed in their law is so offensive that Republicans are now trying to perfume their minginess by branding all those who're being denied access to food and health care as moochers. Get off welfare and go find a job! These shameless lawmakers even insist they're helping the poor by “transitioning” them “from Medicaid to employer-provided health care.”It's always instructive to hear $174,000-a-year, taxpayer-insured politicos scold hard-hit families for “taking” public aid. Apparently, it never dawns on these pecksniffs that dead-end jobs available to the poor don't come with any health care. Well, sniff GOP leaders, that's why we pushed through this “big, beautiful” tax cut for billionaires—it's our anti-poverty program!Huh? Yes, they explain, it's simple: (1) cut spending on poor people; so (2) we can lower the taxes that rich people and corporations pay; thus (3) giving them billions to invest in good jobs for the poor. This is Jim Hightower saying… I was born at night, but it wasn't last night. Notice that their Billionaire Boondoggle includes no requirement at all that recipients invest even one dollar in jobs. So, they won't. This bill is not just ugly, it's morally revolting.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In conservative economics, cuts to social services are often seen as necessary to shrink the expanding deficit. Donald Trump's budget bill is something altogether different: it cuts Medicaid while slashing tax rates for the wealthiest Americans, adding $6 trillion to the national debt, according to the Cato Institute. Janet Yellen, a former Treasury Secretary and former chair of the Federal Reserve, sees severe impacts in store for average Americans: “What this is going to do is to raise interest rates even more. And so housing will become less affordable, car loans less affordable,” she tells David Remnick. “This bill also contains changes that raise the burdens of anyone who has already taken on student debt. And with higher interest rates, further education—college [and] professional school—becomes less affordable. It may also curtail investment spending, which has a negative impact on growth.” This, she believes, is why the President is desperate to lower interest rates; he has spoken of firing his appointed chair of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, whom he has called a “numbskull” and a “stupid person,” and installing a more compliant chair. But lowering interest rates to further political goals, Yellen says, “are the words one expects from the head of a banana republic that is about to start printing money to fund fiscal deficits. … And then you get very high inflation or hyperinflation.”Plus, “rarely have so many members of Congress voted for a measure they so actively disliked,” Susan B. Glasser noted in her latest column in The New Yorker, after the passage of a deficit-exploding Republican budget. Millions of people will lose access to Medicaid—a fact that the President lies about directly—and many trillions of dollars will be added to the deficit. Interest payments on the federal debt will skyrocket, and Trump is so desperate for lower interest rates that he seems poised to fire his own chair of the Federal Reserve and install a compliant partisan to head the heretofore independent central bank. “Anybody panicking about that in Washington?” David Remnick asks Glasser. “I think we are the boiled frog,” she replies. “We are almost panic-immune at this point, in the same way that Donald Trump has, I think, inoculated much of America against facts in our political debate. Even inside of Washington, there's so many individual crises at one time it's very very hard in Trump 2.0 to focus on any one of them.”

The law eliminates taxes on silencers and some firearms, adds new taxes on remittances, and includes bizarre provisions like $40 million for a MAGA statue garden and Trump-branded savings accounts for babies. It extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts, slashes Medicaid (projected to leave 12 million uninsured), defunds Planned Parenthood reimbursements, and guts food assistance while ballooning ICE's budget to over $100 billion. Elon Musk, furious over the bill's impact on his business, announced a vague new “America Party” as his teen protégé “Big Balls” was hired by the Social Security Administration. Today's Headlines: As of Monday evening, Trump's controversial budget bill hadn't passed the Senate, held up by two GOP holdouts. The bill would cut healthcare for 17 million people, slash clean energy incentives while giving tax breaks to coal, ban AI regulation for 10 years, and fund a $50M MAGA statue garden. Elon Musk, critical of the bill, called it a “PORKY PIG PARTY.” Meanwhile, Canada walked back its digital services tax to reenter trade talks, and the S&P 500 hit a new high as markets calmed. Intercepted Iranian communications revealed U.S. strikes on their nuclear sites were less damaging than expected. Trump also sued Los Angeles over sanctuary city policies, claiming they enable lawlessness. In a massive DOJ bust, 324 people were charged in a $14.6B Medicare/Medicaid fraud scheme, involving international networks and stolen identities from over a million Americans. Authorities in Idaho confirmed a sniper ambush that killed two firefighters was planned using a brush fire as bait; the suspect was found dead. Finally, an alarming Anthropic report showed that several AI models simulated deception, blackmail, and even hypothetical lethal behavior when faced with shutdown scenarios. The massive budget bill that Senate Republicans are debating pays for some of its tax cuts by slashing hundreds of billions of dollars in Medicaid spending. The latest report from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates nearly 12 million people will lose health insurance if the Senate version of the bill becomes law. Trump insists the cuts come from eliminating waste, fraud and abuse. Democrats have said they break Trump's promise not to touch Medicaid — and over the weekend, Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina agreed. "What do I tell 663,000 people in two years or three years when President Trump breaks his promise by pushing them off of Medicaid because the funding's not there anymore?" We asked Sarah Jane Tribble, the chief rural correspondent for KFF Health News, what the cuts will mean for rural residents of states like North Carolina — and the hospitals that serve them. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org. Today's Headlines: Trump's budget bill advanced in the Senate with a narrow 51-49 vote, cutting $1 trillion from Medicaid and handing massive tax breaks to the wealthy while adding $3 trillion to the national debt. Two Republicans voted no, and the final vote was delayed as Democrats forced a reading of the 940-page bill. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruled that parents can pull kids from public school over LGBTQ content and narrowed lower courts' power to block Trump's executive orders. A Honduran mother is suing ICE after she and her two kids—one of whom has leukemia—were detained during an asylum court date. DHS also announced the end of Temporary Protected Status for over 300,000 Haitians, forcing them to leave by September. Iran's top cleric issued a fatwa calling for the deaths of Trump and Netanyahu. At a Senate hearing, the U.S. military admitted it never used bunker-busting bombs in Iran strikes, contradicting Trump's “total obliteration” claims. Trump abruptly ended trade talks with Canada over its digital services tax, prompting Canadian retaliation. Consumer spending and income both dropped in May, sparking recession concerns. Miami postponed its November election by a year, extending current officials' terms—likely illegally. The University of Virginia's president resigned under Trump administration pressure over DEI efforts. And in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, an active shooter killed two firefighters in an ambush; the story is still developing. Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: WaPo: GOP Sen. Today's Headlines: At the NATO Summit, President Trump doubled down on claims that U.S. strikes “obliterated” Iran's nuclear sites, despite his own intel saying otherwise. In response to internal leaks, the administration is limiting intelligence access for congressional Democrats. Trump also celebrated NATO's new pledge to raise military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035—except for Spain's carveout—and falsely claimed the NATO chief called him “Daddy Trump.” Back home, Trump is pressuring Senate Republicans to pass his unpopular budget bill, especially amid backlash over Medicaid cuts. Protesters in wheelchairs were zip-tied and arrested at the Capitol. In NYC, 33-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic mayoral primary, defeating a field including Andrew Cuomo and Anthony Weiner, both of whom lost big. Meanwhile, all U.S. visa applicants must now disclose and make public their social media handles from the past five years.
