Episode 53: Screamadelica (Primal Scream). McCartney In Goal is the podcast that debates the great albums of pop music, using a competitive knock-out format. Today we're discussing, Screamadelica which was the third studio album by Scottish rock/indie band Primal Scream. It was first released on 23 September 1991 in the United Kingdom. The album includes "Loaded", "Movin' On Up", "Come Together" and "Higher Than The Sun".How did a remix transform a rock band into dance music pioneers? In our latest episode, we embark on a spirited journey through Primal Scream's iconic album "Screamadelica." Set against the backdrop of September 1991—a month that birthed Nirvana's "Nevermind" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"—we reminisce about our teenage years and debate which album truly defined the era. With a playful quiz on the band's roots, we explore their ties with figures like Bobby Gillespie and Alan McGee, and the influence of the UK indie and Acid House scenes, all peppered with tales of our adolescent awkwardness. Our discussion takes a lively turn as we dissect the album's eclectic nature, bouncing between gospel-infused anthems and psychedelic dance tracks. We engage in a humorous yet passionate debate over whether "Screamadelica" should be considered a concept album, reminiscent of a journey through a weekend's highs and lows. We even engage in a cheeky saxophone solo showdown, diving into differing tastes in jazz and musical complexity, while reflecting on the transformative power of tracks like "Moving On Up" and "Slip Inside This House."No conversation about "Screamadelica" would be complete without celebrating the profound impact of Andy Weatherall. We dive into his pivotal role in reshaping the band's sound with remixes like "Loaded," and ponder how his collaboration with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes forged a legacy that won the 1992 Mercury Prize. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, our exploration promises not just entertainment but a deep appreciation for an album that remains a defining piece of '90s musical history.Support the showTwitter - https://twitter.com/mccartneyinWebsite - https://mccartneyingoal.com/

I don't even want to do an introduction because I just want to get into these stories. I'm joined by Simon “Spence” Dudfield and Martyn Goodacre of Fabulous. They exploded and flamed out in a span of 18 months. But they accumulated a lifetime of stories in that blink of an eye! They weren't even musicians when they started the band. They're STILL not musicians! They had somewhere between 8-10 bassists in that year and a half. They even wrote a song about one. Well, it was Craig Pike and he didn't technically join the band because he died. But they DID have Keanu Reeves in the band for a minute, after stuffing him in the trunk of their car. Another member just wandered off stage, mid-gig, never to be seen again…almost. And speaking of shows, theirs were so volatile that they only lasted 10-15 minutes and were banned from the majority of venues they played. They were kidnapped and beaten after one particularly intense show. They blew off chances to work with Andy Weatherall, Rick Rubin, & The Beastie Boys. It is a short lived musical career filled with destruction, fights, and regret. And it's possibly the most insane collection of stories I have ever heard in one place. Ben Sims Presents Run It Red 050 (tracklist below) March's show has new cuts from Anastasia Kristensen, DJ Spiderwebbed, DMX Crew, Mark Flash, Heiko Laux and Robert Hood to name just a few. Also, it's the 50th show! Yep, Run It Red is 50 episodes young and I’m (all joking aside) genuinely fucking delighted!! In just over 4 years I’ve dropped just under 3500 tracks, in just over 131 hours of new music and i’m really very proud of reaching the big 5.0! I love doing this show and celebrating all the fresh beats that come my way every month, I especially love doing it on NTS - it's such a great radio station. The balance of styles, the many guest stints and monthly residencies, being a station that can boast having legands like Jeff Mills or Andy Weatherall as contributors while channeling the vibe of a golden era pirate is simply amazing - it’s so good to be part of the family. I’ve, pretty much, had a regular radio show since the 90s and had spots on a number of legal, illegal, online and digital stations over the years (inc Atmosphere FM, Centre Force, Stomp Radio, Chillin fM, Deep Frequency, Rinse FM and many more) but Run it Red is the show that’s been my most consistent, most successful and (dare I say it) most professional. The focus of solely new music (bought or been sent in the 4 weeks previous to the show) means I’m constantly on the look out for beats. It puts me in touch with lots of new artists and labels that i might have otherwise not been plus loads of the material for my own labels and sets was originally sent in for the show and it’s R.I.R. where I first test it out, so the show is the really the centre of everything I do in this Techno world now and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Huge love to the NTS crew for the support and opportunity, and a sincere, heartfelt thank you to everyone who sends me music or listens to the show, it truly wouldn’t be possible without you! The next show goes out live at midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning of the 30th March via www.nts.live . You can also sign up to the podcast via iTunes, Acast or whenever you get your podcasts as well as subscribing to the Spotify playlist of tracks via this link > bit.ly/RUNITREDSPOTIFY please send any music to promos@djbensims.com BEN SIMS pres RUN IT RED 50. Cookie-Dough Guest Mix 27 with Fingerman Welcome to the Cookie-Dough Guest mix where we invite some of favourite DJ / Producers to answer a few questions and dig deep into their collections and put together a mix of their favourite records. For this episode we have invited Fingerman (aka Gregg Holmes) to spin some of the records that have influenced him over the years. The past two years have seen many releases on a variety of top Disco labels such as Midnight Riot, Get Down Edits, Discodat and Chopshop many of which have received high praise and number one positions at Juno Records and Juno Download. He has also recently branched out opening his own label Hot Digits Music, a Brighton based label that focuses on up & coming producers and well established disco stalwarts alike with the first few releases featuring work from Fingerman himself, Austrailian trailblazer DR Packer, Detroit funky man Pontchartrain and P-Funk rump shaker Tonbe. At Cookie-Dough HQ we are buzzin’ Fingerman has taken the time out of his busy schedule to put together this special mix for us. Nice one G! Track list: Duff Disco - Eagle Flight "Perfect set opener. I rarely go to a gig and not have a cut by Duff. Solid Edit work." Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (A Mix Of Two Halves) "Andy Weatherall on the mix. Beautiful retro remix" Stone Roses - Waterfall (Justin Robertson Remix) "Huge Roses fan. This remix is lush. Reminds me of my early indie clubbing years" The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (Pal Joey 'Cumulo Nimbus' Remix) "The Orb were responsible for my first electronic music experiences. Timeless music" Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (Fingerman's Edit Of The Frankie Knuckles Mixes) "Utterly brilliant remix of an 80's classic. Frankie did them proud here" A&R Edits - Never Survive (Fingerman's Crazy Edit) "One of my personal favourite edits… Endorsed by Greg Wilson. Bless him!" Happy Mondays - Loose Fit (Fingerman's Up Til Late Edit) "Released on Editors Kuts last year. Always loved this edit… 8. Shockingly not played it out yet!" David Bowie - Golden Years (The Reflex Revision) "Love Bowie. The Reflex does what he does best here" Mercury Rev - Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp (The Chemical Brothers Mix) "Wonderful track. Very Chems. Very Balearic. Very now" M - Pop Musik (Todd Terje Remix) "Had to include one Terje tune. This is such a fun record!" Bjork - Human Behaviour (Underworld Mix 1) "Also HAD to include one Underworld track. This had all the trademark early Underworld vibes. Ace remix. The Dub was only on vinyl… which is also amazing" Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Groove Motion Edit) "One hell of a vocal. Groove Motion are a great couple of chaps who make some very useful edits" Metro Area - Dance Reaction (Fingerman Edit) "My second favourite Metro track after Caught Up. A seminal debut album" Whirlpool Productions - From Disco 2 Disco (Original Mix) "Originally got this on the back of the LRD remix that did the rounds back in the day. The Original version is the only one for me due to its off kilter production and hilarious vocal drops. Still sounds great today" Groove Armada - Love Sweet Sound (Extended Original Mix) "Taken from on of their underrated albums this is. Such a great song" Bryan Ferry - Don't Stop The Dance (Greg Wilson & Derek Kaye Remix) "Love Derek & Greg's productions. One of my fave end of session tunes" Fleetwood Mac - Family Man (Flight Facilities Edit) "Had the fortune of seeing The Mac live this year. What an experience that was! So tight for a band knocking on. I could have picked many Mac tunes but this edit is top dollar" Prefab Sprout - Bonny (Leo Zero Edit) "One of my all time favourite edits.
