Life on the Fretboard with Michael Watts

Rob Luft is a rising star of the European jazz guitar scene whose intricate and lyrical playing melds textures from around the world into a striking musical voice. Rob is an extraordinarily creative person and a bit of a chameleon, home with everything from soulful standards and improvised fusion madness to Balkan time signatures and the joyful lines of Congolese soukous. He has even composed and performed pieces for electric guitar with a full orchestra, which is very cool and unusual, to borrow a phrase from Martin Simpson. We talk about Rob's formative years - growing up in the rich cultural mix of South East London and his early exposure to mind-blowing music by the greats of the jazz scene. The first live gig he ever saw pretty much sealed the deal...you'll find out why. We discuss the blank canvas that is the electric guitar and the use of effects in jazz - which leads to a poetic diatribe from Rob on the subject of loud footswitches and his love for ancient Boss pedals. Rob shares the challenges of playing in different contexts, from a perfectly timed 45-minute free jazz set to high-volume open-air festival gigs where all your fancy chord voicings disappear into the wind. We discuss the importance of playing the lyric of the song and living a life untainted by the seductive power of the pentatonic blues scale. Rob speaks eloquently on the subject of ear training and sight reading. It could save your life someday! I really enjoyed this conversation. Rob is thoughtful, quick and (thanks to years working at a radio station) has impeccable mic technique! I also captured Rob's impromptu performance of the Johnny Green classic "Body and Soul." I hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDa3qpLPgkI You join us on a beautiful summer's day at my studio in the Sussex countryside. Derek Gripper plays Malian Kora music on a vintage Hermann Hauser classical guitar...and if that doesn't get your attention, nothing will!  John Williams himself describes feeling that this was, and, I quote, "absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it." So that's pretty cool.  We talk about his work translating the music of this beautiful African harp to the nylon string guitar, and the extraordinary instruments he has used in his quest to make the music in his head come to life including 8-string guitars, fanned frets and interchangeable magnetic fretboards. Yes, he has gone deep here!  Also discussed are Derek's visit to the Hauser Guitars workshop to choose a career-defining instrument from their archive, his trust in embracing the "less good idea" and his love of single purpose technology, from Rolleiflex medium format cameras to his vintage Nagra reel-to-reel tape recorder.  Speaking of recording, I also managed to record Derek playing my new guitar using this beautiful piece of technology and mics by Microtech Gefell and Royer. The results are right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYW9sq0aR0 Derek Gripper is a true iconoclast - as comfortable with Bach as he is with Toumani Diabaté. He has a truly orchestral sound when playing solo and fills concert halls around the world regularly. He is also one of the most quick-witted and funny people I've met. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Canadian-born Jocelyn Gould is a JUNO award-winning guitarist, vocalist, composer and professor of jazz studies who performs at the highest international levels. Jocelyn is one of those musicians that I could listen to for hours. She is a force of nature, too. She tours constantly. I was delighted to fly back from Norway in time to catch up with her in the days around her debut at one of London's top jazz venues in Soho.  Like many people, I first encountered her work online and was impressed with her lyrical phrasing and beautiful touch. However, it was at the Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival in 2022 - when I filmed a session with her on Bob Benedetto's contribution to The Blue Guitar collection - that I got to experience her extraordinary musicality firsthand. It left a lasting impression and here is the resulting video.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A102bF5BS88 We started what was to become an epic three-day hang in London but then took a train to the picturesque market town of Frome at the end of the Mendip hills in Somerset.  After a wonderful afternoon with Mick and Dan of That Pedal Show, we took a walk through the cobbled streets of Frome before enjoying a frankly sensational dinner at a French brasserie. After that, we made our way back to our accommodations - a slightly eccentric pub slash castle affair - ideal conditions for recording this in-depth podcast interview.  We talked about Jocelyn's childhood fascination with guitar, the challenge of learning to learn individuality in music, setting lofty goals, and the almost telepathic levels of communication enjoyed by jazz musicians at the highest level. And then, just like that, Jocelyn was off to Barcelona to play with another pickup band before returning to Winnipeg to launch her new YouTube podcast. Like I said, it's non-stop!  Jocelyn is up for another Juno award for her latest album, Sonic Bouquet. You should check it out...it's wonderful. For now, you join us for a moment's reminiscence about the cherry clafoutis we had just encountered.  https://www.jocelyngould.com https://www.instagram.com/jocelyngouldmusic/ This episode of Life on the Fretboard was brought to you by the kind sponsorship of Elixir Strings https://www.elixirstrings.com. Adrian Utley is one of the most versatile and creative musicians the UK has produced. His work with artists such as Jeff Beck, Patti Smith and Glenn Branca is testament to this.  Shooting to prominence in the mid 1990s with Portishead, Adrian's beautifully judged, nuanced playing - with its unique jazz and soul sensibilities - set the band apart from their contemporaries in what would become known as the trip-hop scene.  Dummy, Portishead's debut album, would go multi-platinum. The band continues to have a lasting influence in terms of production values, musicianship and sheer style.   Adrian accepted an invitation to join me for this episode of Life on the Fretboard after an online conversation about our shared love of the work of Fred Frith - a pioneer in the improvised and exploratory music scene.  Shortly after, I was invited to film an original 1958 Gibson Flying V. Those of you familiar with my work will understand my trepidation to go it alone with a guitar that was so far out of my comfort zone, so I asked Adrian if he'd like to join me in exploring one of the rarest and pointiest electric guitars known to humanity. I was a little taken aback at the speed with which he accepted. I made a video of us exploring that Flying V: https://youtu.be/VM95mN7eDC0 Once we had finished with the pointy beast, we sat down to record this conversation. Adrian shares his memories of working with Jeff Beck and Glenn Branca and we talk about Adrian's love of all guitars, from vintage L-5s to dumpster-find acoustics. We also chat about learning to love limitations, the Fender Jazzmaster, the best footwear for wah-wah pedal usage, and that solo from the song "Glory Box."  Here's a reminder if you need one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnMTK8EdsOc I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Content warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual violence (22:45–24:55). In this episode we welcome the excellent Barbara Ellen, who joins us on Zoom all the way from... well, the other side of London, actually. (It's a long story.) Barbara talks us through her illustrious writing career from zines such as her own Wax Lyrical and Ooh Gary, Gary (a footie zine dedicated entirely to one G. Lineker, Esq.) via ZigZag (in its Goth phase) to the golden decade she spent in the pages and offices of the NME. Always highly amusing in print, our guest is no less hilarious in (virtual) person – especially when recalling her 1987 interview with Guns N' Roses. But Barbara is also capable of reverence and seriousness, not least when speaking of the revelatory interview Madonna granted her in 1995. It's back to belly-laughs when we turn our attention to news of the planned sequel to This is Spinal Tap. A clip from Gavin Martin's 2009 audio interview with Tap axeman Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a. the 4th Baron Haden-Guest) has us all in stitches as we debate the wisdom or otherwise of attempting Spinal Tap 2. Another audio clip – of the late Genesis P-Orridge explaining why Santa Claus was originally a shaman – is almost as funny. After Mark quotes from interviews with Janis Joplin, Neneh Cherry and Thom Yorke, Barney cites splendid conversations with Beatles boffin Mark Lewisohn and power-balladeering songsmith Diane Warren. Finally, Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on Sophie Ellis-Bextor, muzak and a Hip Hop anniversary. Many thanks to special guest Barbara Ellen. Pieces discussed: Guns N' Roses, The NME, Madonna, Goldberg on Spinal Tap, Staunton on Spinal Tap, Genesis P-Orridge audio, Essra Mohawk by Michael Watts, Essra Mohawk by Max Bell, Janis Joplin, Lester Bangs, Neneh Cherry, Thom Yorke, Mark Lewisohn on the Beatles, Dianne Warren, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Elevator Muzak and 40 years of Hip Hop.

90% of new guitar players abandon playing within 1 year. Are you starting off on the wrong instrument? Many years ago, I found myself drawn to the sound of the electric guitar, but as time passed, I  was drawn to the warm, resonant tones of the acoustic guitar. For decades, I almost exclusively played acoustic guitar, until recently when the allure of electric guitar reignited my interest. With this newfound exploration, I have fresh insights and perspectives on where to begin your guitar journey. And guess what? I'm here to share this treasure trove of knowledge with you. So, if you're just starting out, or you're an old hand considering a new path, you've come to the right place. In this video, I delve into the 10 key differences between acoustic and electric guitars, covering everything from body styles to string gauges. It's not just about which one is better—it's about understanding the unique qualities of each and how they can influence your playing and musical growth. If you don't have time to watch the whole video, I strongly recommend you go down the acoustic path. The acoustic guitar is not just more portable and less gear-intensive, but it also serves as an excellent foundation to build your strength and dexterity due to its string gauge and length. This makes transitioning to electric guitar easier in the long run! If you need more banjo in your life, this list was hand-picked for you.  This episode is all about the brilliant banjo players that inspire countless guitar journeys, including my own—and hopefully yours! But first, a little storytime. I remember back when I was a fledgling in the world of bluegrass and folk music at the Old Town School of Folk. I stumbled upon my first bluegrass CD, an Earl Scruggs album. Let me tell you, that album shook my world and cast a profound influence on my guitar journey. It set me on a path of exploration into the rich and vibrant landscape of this bluegrass and folk. Today, I'm excited to share with you some banjo wizards, divided into three sections. First, we have "The Classics", the legends who shaped the bluegrass scene: Earl Scruggs, Sonny Osborne, and J.D. Crowe. Their work is timeless and continues to influence musicians around the world. Then, we'll delve into the realm of "Old-Time Players", featuring the likes of Rhiannon Giddens, Nora Brown, and Chris Coole. They're keeping the traditional banjo sound aliave, fusing it with their unique styles and creating something truly mesmerizing. Lastly, we can't forget the "Must-Know Players", contemporary artists who have reinvented the banjo wheel in many ways. Here, we have Riley Baugus, Ken Perlman, and Abigail Washburn, whose sounds are vital to any banjo or guitar enthusiast. Listening to banjo players is an incredibly enriching experience. Not only does it help you appreciate the roots of American folk music, but it also broadens your musical horizons, contributing to both your banjo and guitar skills. Jon Gomm is a virtuoso singer-songwriter whose astonishing command of extended acoustic guitar techniques is coupled with thought-provoking lyrics and a dry, often anarchic sense of humor.    In this episode of Life on the Fretboard, Gomm shares his thoughts with host Michael Watts on having the guitar as part of his identity as well as a sanctuary, his horror of sonic paradigms and deeply dodgy guitar shops, the importance of Kurt Cobain, Michael Hedges bootlegs, and the vulnerabilities of practicing in airports.    Gomm also talks about the role the instrument has played in his life as a cathartic, healing element - particularly in times of loss and sadness. Something we can all perhaps relate to.    There is some adult language and listeners outside of the Leeds/Bradford conurbation may benefit from this brief glossary of terms:   "To be het up" - to be highly excited, even agitated.   "To wazz about" - To travel at great speed, often without a clear destination.   Life On The Fretboard is a Michael Watts production for Fretboard Journal and this episode would not be possible without the kind sponsorship of McNally Guitars and Microtech Gefell Microphones.    Links:   https://www.jongomm.com/ https://mcnallyguitars.com/ https://www.microtechgefell.de/ https://michaelwattsguitar.com/ https://www.fretboardjournal.com/

This is an introduction to Damien Dumar, publisher of the Lucien Mars book; The Last Harvest. Damien and I have recorded several hours of conversation that I shall be presenting. I encourage people to keep an open mind and consider the possibilities within these recordings and the book. Jeff Rense has had Damien on twice which is how I encountered this fascinating and eccentric being. For me there are so many things that ring true and some things that I have to stay in a state of curiosity with, I enjoy this balance, a lot.  This is provocative, dark, and very much, deep woo for some. *Recorded on 2.28.2023 You may find the book and links here: https://vampireashram.com I hope you enjoy this portrait as it only gets deeper from here. *You may find more content like this on my Patreon page where we do weekly live-streams with guests and open community chats, as well as some more artistic offerings in the form of meditations, active imagination work and a private mix-tape type segment once a month called Radio Alice: https://www.patreon.com/niish Forever, Niish-

This is a needed and timely chat with Leela about TRE (Trauma Releasing Exercises) -- There are ways to recalibrate and heal which we all need after the mass trauma event we've been put through in the last three years, this is one of those ways. If you know you need in person support to start your practice, use the provider locator at www.traumaprevention.comTension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) is an easy to learn healing approach that can assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. The exercises are designed to encourage the safe activation of a natural reflex mechanism that soothes the Vagus Nerve. When this shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance. After a couple of sessions with a provider you can use the method on your own, allowing you to take control of your well being at your own pace. The following video gives a clear and easy to understand example of the natural shaking mechanism in a prey animal that escapes a predator. (no blood), our buddy gets away!) FULL SHOW HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuJbB18O-Wc&ab_channel=TheMajorityReportw%2FSamSeder It's Day 2 of Sam reporting from the Mass Torts Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada! He and Emma begin by running through updates on the 2022 midterm debate season, footage from Pelosi and Schumer on January 6th, before Sam meets with Ring of Fire Radio host Farron Cousins as they walk through the ten big senate races to watch in the 2022 midterms, watching Ron Johnson respond to his opponent's genuine compliment with outright vitriol, discussing the Florida DNC's tactic of running the same losing candidates year after year, and contextualizing the failing Trump legal battles. Then, Sam is joined by tort lawyer and early Air-America investor Mike Papantonio as they discuss the role of tort law in holding corporations accountable in both the legal and public realms at a point in American politics where everything from Congress and the Courts to the Media is driven by the profit incentive, walking through his biggest cases in tort law, and the constant presence of internal corporate documents from actuaries walking through the necessary profits to offset the legal costs of future injuries and harm they KNOW their product will cause. They also touch on the cases on HSBC's money laundering for terrorists and cartels (resulting in solely corporate fines), the Camp Lejeune water contamination, and more, walking through the myriad levels of awareness from inside the corporation to the highest levels of the executive branch. Next, lawyer Michael Watts joins to dive into his work studying potential causes in the exponential increase in autism diagnosis over the last few decades, including the clear lack of evidence around the impact of certain vaccine ingredients, and the growing evidence of a correlation between the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis later in life. Sarah Papantonio then joins as she explores her recent case taking on the impact of baby formula companies causing premature babies to develop necrotizing enterocolitis by misadvertising their products as human milk, rather than the cow's milk base it actually used. They also tackle the greater exploitative history of the baby formula industry, before parsing through the difference between multi-district legislation (mass tort suits) and class action, and exploring how federal governments can get involved in tort cases. Sam and Emma wrap up the show by diving deeper into various midterm debates including Ron Johnson being pushed around by Mandela Barnes (yet still looking worse) and Tudor Dixon's transphobic closing remarks, also looking at Charlie Kirk's response to Alex Jones' Sandy Hook case, and Ben Shapiro dancing around the intense antisemitism of his conservative colleagues. This is the beginning of a lovely journey that I find myself on with enna reittort -- you can hear from the opening, the libation of the Mother pouring her monsoon blessings upon us as, the deepening waters welcome enna and myself, sisters of the ways, children of the nothingness and allness. On this weeks 9th episode of Primadonnas of the Gutter the ladies get dressed to the nines, (and thoroughly bored), as they use their tin foil VR goggles to virtually walk the BLACK CARPET for the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. Don't worry, darlings! The main event proved milquetoast but the primadonnas are nothing if not mavens at the art of finding hidden portals to deeper meaning among the vulgarity of popculture. Sit back, relax, enjoy the show as the ladies discuss: Pink is the new black and black is the new red Nicki Minaj is the most sincere barbie we've ever met No shade: We live in an openly masonic society Lizzo is 100% that bitch Becky G represents and the tale of the triad claw Disney's latest siren (and were not talkin ariel): Dove Cameron Age gap discourse: grooming isnt gravy Plus Britney's tape, Demi Lovato returns her rock roots and Jlo and Ben help us return to a simpler time in 1999.
