Funkier Sounds celebrated its 6th birthday with an hour of tunes from me and then an hour of tunes from a DJ and producer that I've been into forever. My hour was the usual mix - starting things mid-tempo and funky, bringing things down a notch and then cranking things a touch with a few promo goodies before the handover. In hour 2 I was dead chuffed to welcome none other than Fingerman. Gregg's a bit of a legend in the game, and someone who I looked up to loads before I got into producing. Love that I've put out a couple of bits on his annual Hot Digits compilations (eyes on this year!), love that we hung out at Glasto a few years back, and love that he's done a brilliant mix for my show! It's the expected level of lushness, launching straight in after the trademark spoken intro. Gets quite full on towards the end too, but always keeping it cool, well-mixed and very Fingerman. He's the man behind Minimum Wage and way more: it's Bob Fingerman! Bob started out early as a cartoonist and illustrator, leaving NYC's School of Visual Arts to produce work for publications like Cracked, Penthouse, Heavy Metal, National Lampoon and The Village Voice. But soon, he decided to focus on comics, breaking in with a year-long stint on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and shorter pieces for Eros Comix, Dark Horse, and Vertigo. His first graphic novel was a sci fi satire called White Like She, and then he created his semi-autobiographical series Minimum Wage, which he continues on and off through today. Since then, Bob's done a mix of comics and prose novels, often in the post-apocalyptic and zombie genres, and did some work at MAD Magazine. And he's still going strong, with two new books published this year. Set in the very New York City neighborhood Bob himseld used to live in, it is an eclectic collections of stories about various creators striving to put out their work on the printed page. Darla, a creative in her own right, works at the shop and provides us with a look into the world of these creative souls with sarcasm and wit worthy of the best satirical wit. With That's Some Business You're In (Zoop), cartoonist-humorist-author Bob Fingerman has created a career retrospective to celebrate (lament?) his 40th year in comics. We got together in LA to talk about that milestone, what it meant to him to bring together decades of his comics, art, and illustration into a single volume, the challenges of writing the narrative to his work-life, and what he learned from looking at the arc of his career. We get into the 'maybe someday' vibe of the big projects he wants to tackle, the process of getting over his younger shame at making comics for, um, 'lower-prestige' (but well-paying) magazines, the distance he needed on his best-known comic, Minimum Wage, the artist's retrospective he really wants to see, why he enjoys creator-owned work instead of someone else's IP, and his true artistic goal. We also discuss the life-changing stuff — like addressing the tension between narcissism and imposter syndrome, the nature of change, the toxicity of NYC, and the need to leave a better memory — while we talk about life in LA, the writers who blew him away and how he can't begin to emulate them, the way his characters changed from punching bags to people, the joy of hummingbirds and small dogs, and a lot more. Summer is upon us once more! What better soundtrack than HTTT? Our guest this week is the amazing Paul Groves. Hailing from Guildford, Surrey, (UK), Paul developed a passion for house music and started DJ'ing in the early 90's, making regular appearances in bars, clubs and underground parties across London and the South East. Barry N. Malazberg and his multiple Science Fiction personalities were on the frontlines as eras shifted from Asimovian ideas to a counter-culture middle finger held high novels filled with sex, drugs, and political points of view. One of his weirdest meta- SF novels was the thin 1974 masterpiece Galaxies. The novel is the story of a 40th-century starship captain and the science fiction writer creating her and the novel at the same time. Galaxies was reprinted a few years ago by Professor D. Harlan Wilson's Anti-Oedipus Press. So who better to join me for this discussion... In this episode, we talk about why Barry Malzberg is a genius, underrated, and vastly more important to 20th-century Science Fiction than given credit for. Why he alone was in a position to make this commentary, we go on tangents about Philip K. Dick, John Brunner and some on this panel argue that Ursula K. Leguin is overrated. D. Harlan Wilson is a researcher, publisher, and author. His fiction includes a dozen novels and plays including Dr. Idenity and Jackanape and the Fingerman. His non-fiction includes the Modern Masters of Science Fiction series book on J.G. Ballard and a critical companion to the Stars, My Destination. James Reich is the author of Soft Invasions and The Song My Enemies Sing. So, with Writer/Artist Bob Fingerman's visit we got to watch the amazing 70s classic "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3". And then...we watched this...movie. This anomalous 80's horror entry has a stunningly dubious story. Pieced together from...well, just listen in as we explain. It's truly an experience you will never forget.

Our return week chugs on along with the first of two train-themed films that were brought to us by our guest, the amazing writer/ artist Bob Fingerman. First up, "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" starring the late, great Walter Matthau in a real zipper of a movie. Some gun thugs take over a NYC subway car for a million dollar ransom and Matthau, a supervisor of sorts for the NYT and ex-cop gets involved with the process.  A truly unsung classic from the mid-70s. The question I would like to discuss with you today is "Can I ask my parents to be less involved?” Let's face it, no matter how old and independent we are, parents will always see us as their child who knows less than them and needs to be protected. In most circumstances, they want to be involved in our life. And it is becoming more and more common. A study by Fingerman in 2017 shows that parents are considerably more involved with their grown children aged 18–34 than it was the case 40 years ago. Moreover, parents engage in more frequent contact, give more support, and are more likely to live with a grown child.

Based in Brighton UK, Fingerman (AKA Gregg Holmes), has been spinning tunes since the mid-nineties jumping from multiple genres in his time. Originally a techno and house head, Fingerman caught the disco bug in the mid 2000’s whilst holding a vinyl only residency at Brighton long-running night club Casablancas. He then began to research the sample material from his favourite house records and, like a kind of domino effect, began following editors and producers such as Greg Wilson, Todd Terje and Dimitri From Paris. He began making his own re-edits of his favourite disco records in order to beatmatch them for club use soon after.

On this episode of The Comics Alternatives Interviews, Derek talks with Bob Fingerman, a man who knows what it's like to work for Minimum Wage. They discuss Bob's decision to bring back this landmark series though Image Comics, as well as the task of pulling together last year's Maximum Minimum Wage (also from Image). In the interview, Derek asks Bob about any autobiographical links between him and his protagonist, Rob Hoffman, and he tries to corner Bob on whether or not Rob's recently divorced spouse, Sylvia Fanucci, will make an appearance in the new series. Bob refuses to be cornered. Along the way they discuss the challenges of building a devoted readership, Bob's fascination with the apocalypse and zombie stories, his forays into racial/gender politics, the joys (and limitations) of explicit sex and violence, the comics mainstream and “that Bob Fingerman feeling,” and the creative satisfaction one gets from making Bill O'Reilly a mutated and despicable villain of a decimated cultural landscape. (Wait…doesn't this actually describe the real O'Reilly?) In April of last year, Image Comics published Maximum Minimum Wage, a hardcover compilation of Bob Fingereman’s long-running Fantagraphics series. To this day, Minimum Wage and the subsequent collection Beg The Question remain the cartoonist’s best known work, telling the close-to-home tale of an artist struggling with work, love and life in New York in the 90s. After a 15 year hiatus spent on various comics projects and a trio of prose novels, Fingerman picked up the story again in January with a new series bearing the same name, set three years after the end of its predecessor. I met up with Fingerman in the Manhattan apartment he shares with his wife to discuss returning to a project after nearly a decade and a half and how to get back into the mindset of younger, poorer time.

Everything old is new again! Mike and Greg decide to tackle Bob Fingerman's 90's alt-comic fave from Fantagraphics, recently re-released in oversized hardcover form from Image Comics. Greg went new school and read the HC, while Mike went old school and busted out the FB trades. But it's all the same stories, right? Ummmm.... yes and no. For the new release, Fingerman (by his own admission) pulled a "George Lucas" and re-worked the old material to bring it all up to his current standards. Did that help? Hurt?
