Melbourne-born, London-based vibist Fergus Sweetland punches in this week with a two-hour jaunt into his playfully jagged and diverse headspace. Responsible for some off-kilter belters on the likes of NRBK and HAYES, the Australian DJ and producer brings his fun-loving approach to our waves with a choice selection of versatile techno grooves and genre-busting edits of his own concoction. Tailored to lift spirits and bodies alike, his mix shall rejoice all lovers of the kind of unbothered musical cross-pollination and essential playfulness that misses from the more ascetic strains of techno orthodoxy. Bending genres, tempi and minds at once, this one goes particularly hard in its own idiosyncratically witty, debonair, killer way.

Macca and Kenny are joined live on air by Michael Balk President, Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA); Pay Up: Should AI companies pay for the creative work they use? Artificial intelligence is changing how we create, consume and discover news, music, books and art. But as AI companies train their models on enormous amounts of creative work, artists, journalists and performers are asking a simple question: if your work is being used to build billion-dollar AI products, shouldn’t you be paid? Joining us this morning is Michael Balk, President of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance, to discuss the union’s Pay Up campaign. Michael is an actor and producer best known for his work in children's television and theatre as part of dirtgirlworld (An animated program that appeared in the 2010s and is now a touring show), but has also appeared in musicals, theatre productions and television commercials. The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) is Australia’s union representing journalists, actors, musicians, screen workers, voice artists, photographers and other creative professionals. Its Pay Up campaign argues that generative AI systems are being trained using enormous collections of copyrighted creative works—including journalism, books, photographs, illustrations, music, scripts and performances—without creators’ knowledge, consent or payment. The campaign calls for governments to change the law so creators will receive an ongoing, fair payment whenever their work is used, rather than a one-off fee, under a system called Equitable Remuneration. It also calls on them to give workers a secure right to be paid when the works they create are licenced, traded or used in any way – including by AI companies. Equitable Remuneration currently does not exist in Australia, but does in the UK and other nations. Australian DJ and music producer Josh Fawaz used AI to generate vocals and drums for a cover of Madonna's 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” which spent 4 weeks on top of the National Radio Airplay charts and peaked at Number 2 on the ARIA charts. After initially saying nothing, he has now been compelled to add AI credits to the track on Spotify. The AI-assisted cover is currently beating Madonna's new single “Danceteria” on the ARIA charts. At its national conference this week, the ALP announced it would launch a Fair AI Taskforce through its Chifley Research Centre, which proposes to give Australian workers a greater say in how the technology shapes the nation. Microsoft signed a one-year pilot deal to access news articles from Nine Media to inform its Co-Pilot AI system, letting it use information from news stories to inform its answers – but not to give users access to the full story. Nine did not disclose the value of the deal. Nine Entertainment will lay off 30 people from The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald due to “the extreme state of disruption” caused by AI. The company has plans to retrain and to hire people for “digital-first, reader-savvy, data-informed roles”, The Guardian reports. According to the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, 10% of news consumers around the world use AI chatbots to get their news. For those aged under 35, it climbs to 16%. Today's guest may be one of the most interesting humans on the planet. Whether it's doing 250 shows in a year, training with monks, not staying in one city for more than four days over a year and a half, exploring the world, or being a true pioneer in his music space — Chris Emerson, aka WHAT SO NOT, has done it all! What So Not is an Australian DJ and producer. He has just released a brand new collaborative EP The Quiet That Hurts with visionary Dutch artist Buunshin. Previously releasing their single Threads and a luminous new single Dancing In The Leaves featuring Lucy Lucy.   Emerging in the 2010s, What So Not has evolved into an in-demand artist across the globe, renowned for his innovation and signature style that blends bass, trap and melodic hues into a unique and unforgettable package. Releasing his debut album Not All the Beautiful Things in 2018, What So Not resoundingly showcased his versatility and revolutionary prowess, with tracks like Be OK Again featuring Daniel Johns and Goh featuring Skrillex building formidable momentum that would ultimately lead to a 2022 sophomore album Anomaly. A genre-less and relentlessly experimental artist, What So Not has spent his career collaborating with the likes of Skrillex, RL Grime, Killer Mike and Toto, with his releases and potent live performance effortlessly translating over to the stage including at Coachella and Lollapalooza, headline shows in Europe, North America as well as on home soil, and also cultivating over 1.3 billion streams and counting worldwide in the process.  Opening with Threads featuring renowned American singer-songwriter and composer Maiah Manser, The Quiet That Hurts EP is undeniably a short yet sharply sweet full-bodied journey in avant-garde sounds and blissful delivery, with the EP growing from its opening track into quiet rumination and lush, ambient urgency via Tragic, featuring Ukrainian singer vocalist Alina Pash, pulsing with emotion alongside a high-octane foundation. From here, the EP dives into a hypnotic yet propulsive flow state (Dancing In The Leaves feat. Lucy Lucy), before oozing into bewitching melodics balanced between moments of instrumental sparsity and animated drum and bass (The One feat. Aiko), and, ultimately, closing out with sprawling soundscapes fused with narcotic beats and unbridled serenity juxtaposed against emphatic and raw lyricism delivered by Mara Necia.  Dancing In The Leaves is out now! The Quiet That Hurts EP is out now! What So Not is also touring America and Canada soon, check it out! We chat about surfing and what it does for his soul, his new EP, consciousness and deep chats with AI, the void, Aussie revival dance tour and helping upcoming artists, the state of the music industry, ego, jumping off the rocket ship, art and completion, quitting accounting, creating new sounds plus plenty more! Bringing back a bit of summer with the first recorded interview from this past @dimensionsfestival in Tisno, Croatia. This was my second year hosting talks at the lovely Haze stage and the first guest in our little series is Australian DJ and Animalia label boss, @kia-sydney. A longtime lover of dance music who started DJing in 2015, Kia's sets travel from dark and driving to playful and euphoric with complete ease — she's an artist who refuses to limit herself, and her sound only benefits from not being boxed in, while her label's exports are as adventurous and exciting as she is. More than just a creative outlet, music is a form of personal expression for Kia, and she is an expert in crafting not only DJ performances, but mixes that are often akin to a diary. As always for these live talks, rather than honing in on one topic, we're exploring each artist's journey and the musical pursuits that make them who they are.

"We need to give more people a seat at the table." The Australian DJ and producer talks about exclusivity in the music industry, neurodivergence and London's thriving lesbian scene. The London-based Australian artist Teneil Throssell (AKA HAAi) doesn't have a typical DJ story. She moved to London in the early 2010s as part of a now defunct psych rock band, and once it broke up, she thought her stint in the music industry was over. Unsure what to do with herself, she started mixing dance music records at the bar where she was working at the time, Ridley Road Market. The right person happened to "discover" her, offering her a spot supporting Jacques Greene at the London club Phonox. She went on to hold a residency there for two years, and the rest, as they say, is history. Throssell's career blew up almost immediately. For the last eight years that she's been DJing, she's toured internationally on a massive scale, sometimes going to six different countries in one week. She's also released a number of EPs and one LP on Mute Records, remixed Kylie Minogue and started two labels of her own: Coconut Beats and Radical New Theory, which she runs with her partner. Her style is eclectic, but fans of hers will know her for her upbeat, techno- and acid-inflected sound. In this RA Exchange, Throssell dives into some emotional and complex topics, like the criticism she received from RA for her early EP Systems Up, Windows Down; London's lesbian scene; her ADHD diagnosis; and climate activism in the electronic music industry. ►Check out our fanlink.to/Y0UTUBE for your audiovisual experience◄ Today we welcome NYC based producer and DJ Kate Stein behind the Schirmchendrink counter with a super fresh and energetic Sparkling Water! A nascent purveyor of house and cutting-edge disko in all its forms, Australian DJ/producer and visual artist Kate Stein is grooving her way into the good graces of underground circles everywhere with an experiential sound that's all her own. Stein first entered the world of art via set design, meticulously crafting event spaces with an eye for the elegant and the mischievous. After years of developing her unmistakable style as a spatial designer, her skills with composition, color, and ambiance have coagulated into a raw creative force she manipulates into any form she desires. Stein channels that force into aggressive rhythms, heavy percussion, and arcane melodies. Releasing her debut Scenic Byway and sophomore Mystic Saddle Ranch EPs in 2021 via Roam Recordings and Playground Records — featuring remixes from the likes of Perel, Zillas On Acid, Balam, and Autarkic — selectors worldwide continue to take notice of Stein's hypnotic pull. With audio landscapes meant to inspire joviality and bring about unexpected feelings, this is not the music of pure escapism. This is the music of revelation—opening space within to explore the nebulous reaches of yourself. 2022 has had her release her third EP on TAU, with remixes from Curses, Zombies in Miami and Leonor. In the eyes and ears of Stein, these sounds paint the pictures of New York City's bustling streets and the outlying deserts around Los Angeles, the two metropolises she currently calls home. Within these concrete jungles laid opposite one another, every environment which Stein wishes to fill with pulsating frequencies exists. Pop-ups. Niche festivals. Places where someone can fully express their inner-child. With Kate Stein as a guide, you won't just hear that inimitable contrast. Instead, it will appear before your very eyes and envelop your whole body. Keep an eye on this rocket: with a few more releases to come in 2023, her dynamic and fun approach to dance floor soundscapes is in full bloom. It's one thing to survive a life-threatening illness, it's another to thrive thereafter. Tom Nash had both his legs and arms amputated at the age of 19, the result of contracting the deadly Meningococcal Septicemia. Not that he let that stop him from achieving his goals for life. Today, he is a successful Australian DJ, a business entrepreneur, and an in demand speaker who has engaged audiences worldwide including nearly 3 million people who have viewed his TEDx Talk: The Perks of Being a Pirate. In this episode, Tom shares his story of perseverance and how he learned to manufacture his own state of wellbeing and happiness as he relearned how to walk, play music, and pursue his dreams. Tom tells us why breaking his rehabilitation into steps and celebrating those small wins along the way was key to maintaining a sense of progress and control. He also shares humorous stories about differences between how young boys, girls, and adults interact with him in public.  Ultimately, Tom doesn't wish to be pitied or solely provide fleeting inspiration, but rather strategies others can use to enhance their own wellbeing.  For more information about Tom Nash, go to tomnash.com or check out his Life Under the Lens video education series.

With numerous world tours, more than 100 million online streams, and multiple awards plus a Grammy nomination, Australian DJ/production duo Feenixpawl have cemented themselves as respected tastemakers across the electronic music industry. After a breakout year in 2012 with the release of “In My Mind”, the duo stormed onto the dance music scene and established their presence as two of Australia's most prominent exports. Their timeless hit single, released on Axwell's iconic Axtone Records, shot straight to #1 on Beatport, held the #1 spot on the ARIA Club charts for a record 12 weeks, and ultimately lead in a Grammy nomination. Following that monumental success, the duo have gone on to remix the likes of Rihanna, Kaskade, NERVO, Nicky Romero, Jess Glynne, and many more. After launching their own label, Eclypse Records, their latest singles “Ghosts”, “Blue Sky” and “Quicksand” have had enormous success across US radio and around the world. In particular, “Ghosts” spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Charts, and finished at #12 on SiriusXM BPM's Top Tracks of the Year. “Blue Sky” and “Quicksand” followed with the same radio play and charting success the duo has become accustomed to. So far in 2018, they've had breakout club hits in “Dancin” and “Fever”, as well as the dance radio mainstay, “Neon Sky”.
