Artificial intelligence is changing how we create, consume and discover news, music, books and art. But as AI companies train their models on enormous amounts of creative work, artists, journalists and performers are asking a simple question: if your work is being used to build billion-dollar AI products, shouldn’t you be paid? Joining us this morning is Michael Balk, President of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance, to discuss the union’s Pay Up campaign. Michael is an actor and producer best known for his work in children's television and theatre as part of dirtgirlworld (An animated program that appeared in the 2010s and is now a touring show), but has also appeared in musicals, theatre productions and television commercials. The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) is Australia’s union representing journalists, actors, musicians, screen workers, voice artists, photographers and other creative professionals. Its Pay Up campaign argues that generative AI systems are being trained using enormous collections of copyrighted creative works—including journalism, books, photographs, illustrations, music, scripts and performances—without creators’ knowledge, consent or payment. The campaign calls for governments to change the law so creators will receive an ongoing, fair payment whenever their work is used, rather than a one-off fee, under a system called Equitable Remuneration. It also calls on them to give workers a secure right to be paid when the works they create are licenced, traded or used in any way – including by AI companies. Equitable Remuneration currently does not exist in Australia, but does in the UK and other nations. Australian DJ and music producer Josh Fawaz used AI to generate vocals and drums for a cover of Madonna's 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” which spent 4 weeks on top of the National Radio Airplay charts and peaked at Number 2 on the ARIA charts. After initially saying nothing, he has now been compelled to add AI credits to the track on Spotify. The AI-assisted cover is currently beating Madonna's new single “Danceteria” on the ARIA charts. At its national conference this week, the ALP announced it would launch a Fair AI Taskforce through its Chifley Research Centre, which proposes to give Australian workers a greater say in how the technology shapes the nation. Microsoft signed a one-year pilot deal to access news articles from Nine Media to inform its Co-Pilot AI system, letting it use information from news stories to inform its answers – but not to give users access to the full story. Nine did not disclose the value of the deal. Nine Entertainment will lay off 30 people from The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald due to “the extreme state of disruption” caused by AI. The company has plans to retrain and to hire people for “digital-first, reader-savvy, data-informed roles”, The Guardian reports. According to the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, 10% of news consumers around the world use AI chatbots to get their news. For those aged under 35, it climbs to 16%. This was my second year hosting talks at the lovely Haze stage and the first guest in our little series is Australian DJ and Animalia label boss, @kia-sydney. A longtime lover of dance music who started DJing in 2015, Kia's sets travel from dark and driving to playful and euphoric with complete ease — she's an artist who refuses to limit herself, and her sound only benefits from not being boxed in, while her label's exports are as adventurous and exciting as she is. More than just a creative outlet, music is a form of personal expression for Kia, and she is an expert in crafting not only DJ performances, but mixes that are often akin to a diary. As always for these live talks, rather than honing in on one topic, we're exploring each artist's journey and the musical pursuits that make them who they are.

The London-based Australian artist Teneil Throssell (AKA HAAi) doesn't have a typical DJ story. She moved to London in the early 2010s as part of a now defunct psych rock band, and once it broke up, she thought her stint in the music industry was over. Unsure what to do with herself, she started mixing dance music records at the bar where she was working at the time, Ridley Road Market. The right person happened to "discover" her, offering her a spot supporting Jacques Greene at the London club Phonox. She went on to hold a residency there for two years, and the rest, as they say, is history. Throssell's career blew up almost immediately. For the last eight years that she's been DJing, she's toured internationally on a massive scale, sometimes going to six different countries in one week. She's also released a number of EPs and one LP on Mute Records, remixed Kylie Minogue and started two labels of her own: Coconut Beats and Radical New Theory, which she runs with her partner. Her style is eclectic, but fans of hers will know her for her upbeat, techno- and acid-inflected sound. In this RA Exchange, Throssell dives into some emotional and complex topics, like the criticism she received from RA for her early EP Systems Up, Windows Down; London's lesbian scene; her ADHD diagnosis; and climate activism in the electronic music industry. Izabella Rekiel was excited to join Extreme E as its inaugural impact correspondent, but to take part this globe-trotting Australian DJ would have to change her life by spending the entire season aboard the St Helena.  In telling the story of the ship, its crew and their voyage around the world Izy saw firsthand the devastation being wrought by climate change and human behaviour but was inspired by a new perspective​ on​ the natural world and the growing number of people determined to save it.  James and Michael caught up with Izabella at the end of the 2021 season to hear about her year aboard the ship that makes Extreme E tick. It's one thing to survive a life-threatening illness, it's another to thrive thereafter. Tom Nash had both his legs and arms amputated at the age of 19, the result of contracting the deadly Meningococcal Septicemia. Not that he let that stop him from achieving his goals for life. Today, he is a successful Australian DJ, a business entrepreneur, and an in demand speaker who has engaged audiences worldwide including nearly 3 million people who have viewed his TEDx Talk: The Perks of Being a Pirate. In this episode, Tom shares his story of perseverance and how he learned to manufacture his own state of wellbeing and happiness as he relearned how to walk, play music, and pursue his dreams. Tom tells us why breaking his rehabilitation into steps and celebrating those small wins along the way was key to maintaining a sense of progress and control. With numerous world tours, more than 100 million online streams, and multiple awards plus a Grammy nomination, Australian DJ/production duo Feenixpawl have cemented themselves as respected tastemakers across the electronic music industry. After a breakout year in 2012 with the release of “In My Mind”, the duo stormed onto the dance music scene and established their presence as two of Australia's most prominent exports.
