The Silver Scroll Awards Ceremony, celebrating the country's best songwriters, is about to get started in Auckland's Parnell in just over an hour's time. Singer-songwriter Marlon Williams is chasing a second scroll after taking out the top prize five years ago. Also among the finalists are songs by indie rockers The Beths, jazz rappers Avantdale Bowling Club, folk band Tiny Ruins, and psychedelic rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra, who last won the award back in 2015. The five Kiwi songs nominated for the 2023 APRA Silver Scroll Awards have been confirmed- and there's some big names in the mix. Marlon Williams, The Beths, Avantdale Bowling Club, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tiny Ruins have all made the shortlist ahead of October's ceremony. Flicks.co.nz editor Steve Newall says the awards celebrate the craft of songwriting, with each nominated artist being judged of how they pair words with music. Tom Scott (on Avantdale Bowling Club - 'TREES' album release and NZ tour) Interview by Dave Borrie on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
As broadcast November 10, 2022 with plenty of admiration for the keys. Tonight we begin marking the 20th anniversary of Johnny Griffith's passing. Griffith was the long-time man on the ivory for The Funk Brothers, who were Motown's in-house band, and thus you have the passing of a man whose licks made soul what it was in the golden days. Lots of new soul to explore in our Sampled funk and soul first half tonight, with tunes from The Winston Brothers, The Allergies, Object Heavy, Avantdale Bowling Club, Allen Stone, and so many other worthies. Dan Lloyd joins us once again for our AMPED rock ruckus after that, with highlights from Gina Birch, Narrow Head, and David Knudson, and a tribute to the wonderful Mimi Parker, the drummer and vocalist for Low who succumbed to cancer this week and will be most dearly missed.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Marvin Gaye – I Heard It Through The GrapevineThe Winston Brothers – Free RideThe Allergies – Sometimes I WonderTurtlenecks feat Miss Rachelle Jeanty – Break FreeObject Heavy – For The BetterAdi Oasis – Get it Got it Part II (31:25)The Harlem Gospel Travelers – Do You Know The ManAvantdale Bowling Club – Rent 2 HighThe Green with Allen Stone – Coming Home (remix)Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – Jax Is BusyGhost Funk Orchestra – PrismFela Kuti – Ariya Part III (63:26)Gina Birch – Wish I Was YouWeird Al Yankovic – Now You KnowNOFX – Punk Rock ClichéCreeper – Ghost BrigadeLow – Just Make It Stop Part IV (96:19)Everclear – Year of the TigerNarrow Head – Moments of ClarityDavid Knudson – No Ways No Means (ft. Tom Scott is a rapper from New Zealand's underground hip-hop scene. He's been rapping for over a decade now. He grew up in Auckland – the biggest city in a very small country. In 2018, Tom released an amazing, beautiful album under the name Avantdale Bowling Club. On the record, he reflects on his roots. His childhood. The friendships he's lost. The places he's been. His family. It's an intimate hip hop record with jazz instrumentation. Tom recently released Trees, a follow up to the self-titled debut album. We're taking a moment to revisit our conversation with Tom from 2019. Tom explains what it's like to write an album that brings back somber memories, and why he felt it was important to use original jazz songs, rather than jazz samples.
It was an absolute pleasure hoppin' off the substitute bench to fill in for Denzel this week. Rolled out some older Deerhunter, The Snails, MF DOOM and Dum Dum Girls. Some new cuts from Avantdale Bowling Club, BUB, and hanbee feature. We had a spring themed string of tracks and the remix of the day went to a beautiful Phil Tangent remix.
A couple of newbies that might have missed the mark, for me anyway. But there's comfort and familarity with Linda, Neil & Steve. Skynyrd,as you do. And because they're name-checked on the amazing new Avantdale Bowling Club album, there's some Little Feat cos as much as you want to you can't really play Jazz infused hip hop on a country show. Well I could but the fundamentalists would have kittens. That wicked bluegrass cover of Straight To Hell is there though and brand new Drive By Truckers, Lyall Lovett and new friend Langhorne Slim and a ton more.
This week's show featured new music from Troy Kingi, Kraak & Smaak, Avantdale Bowling Club, Freddie Gibbs, Open Mike Eagle and more.
Thursday with all the regulars + Frank Booker with an Avantdale Bowling Club test pressign after 5pm...! Thanks to The Beer Spot!

As broadcast August 27, 2021 with plenty of kiwi birds to see on the podcast scenic highway. This week we welcomed Arjuna Oakes & Serebii to the guest artist selector slot, as their First Nights EP just dropped the same day. A duo that has worked mainly on one off singles up to this point together, their playlist was a fascinating look into the creation process for the songs on the EP, and the interview was an amazingly funny exploration of their very unique creative processes. Hip hop musician Tom Scott and his collaborative project Avantdale Bowling Club have won the coveted Album of the Year at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, which took place at Auckland’s Spark Arena on Thursday.
Internationally renowned Wellington group Fat Freddy’s Drop have announced ten shows across New Zealand this summer, with support from acts including L.A.B, Avantdale Bowling Club, JessB, Bailey Wiley, and Philadelphia-native DJ Jazzy Jeff.
What follows is one of our favorite interviews we've recorded this year. Seriously. It's with an artist you probably haven't heard of. His name's Tom Scott. He's from New Zealand. He's been a rapper there for about 10 years now, he's one of the biggest role players in the small, burgeoning scene there. Last year he created the group Avantdale Bowling Club and released a self-titled record for the group. It combines jazz with hip-hop in the same way Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly did. It's lush and beautiful like Pharoah Sanders or Alice Coltrane. Tom's rhymes are deeply personal and affecting and honest. It's one of our favorite albums of the year. Don't miss this one!
