On episode 149, we're honoring this 1993 musical masterpiece. This classic ATCQ album embodies everything that made us me fall in love with hip-hop. It was pure perfection. An absolute game changer and the album that helped usher in the 2nd golden era. Like what we've recently done with Paul's Boutique, we strip this album completely and build it back using original samples in true TIP fashion. We reproduce this classic that'll allow you to hear this album in a whole new way. Get ready to relive 1993 all over again. It's no secret to anybody who knows me that Midnight Marauders by ATCQ is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. When you talk about hip-hop classics this project embodies everything that defines a project to be that. Midnight Marauders was released Nov. 9th, 1993, followed up by their previous effort 'Low End Theory' (another Classic), and still in heavy rotation today. 30 years later this album aged like fine wine and still holds an important part of my childhood in the 90s. On this bonus episode me & the homie Lew talk about the impact this album had on us and for hip hop culture. We break down some of the album's singles and other stand out tracks that made this album a masterpiece. If you're a music nerd like the two of us are, you will enjoy this conversation. #WhoGotNext # CLTure

We're exiting the hellscape to indulge ourselves in 90s nostalgia after re-screening Michael Rappaport's 2012 documentary “Beats, Rhymes and Life: the Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” taking a turn to talk about one of the greatest foundational groups in Rap. OG Nicepiller Bill makes his podcast debut, and Twitter friend lontar rounds out the panel. This is a deep dive, though perhaps not deep enough given the richness of the material. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy the work of these incredible artists. As broadcast August 27, 2021 with plenty of kiwi birds to see on the podcast scenic highway. This week we welcomed Arjuna Oakes & Serebii to the guest artist selector slot, as their First Nights EP just dropped the same day. A duo that has worked mainly on one off singles up to this point together, their playlist was a fascinating look into the creation process for the songs on the EP, and the interview was an amazingly funny exploration of their very unique creative processes. As broadcast July 30, 2021 with extra hot sauce for you podcast tasters. Tonight we started the show wishing former First Choice member Joyce Jones a happy 72nd birthday, and then we began the warm-up for our guest artist selector for this week in Alanna Royale. The Nashville-based artist just released "Fall In Love Again" via Colemine Records, and we talked with Alanna about working with producer Kelly Finnigan along with riffing on some of her favorite artists & friends featured on the playlist. A wonderful singer-songwriter whose excellent album is very deserving of a label to call home, this was a fantastic conversation and insight into her work.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)First Choice – Let No Man Put Asunder (Shep Pettibone 12” Mix)Tune-Yards - BiznessJanelle Monae – FasterSAULT – FreeDurand Jones & The Indications – Private SpaceDurand Jones & The Indications – Sea of Love Part II (32:52)A Tribe Called Quest feat Faith Evans – Stressed OutA Tribe Called Quest – Get A HoldMonophonics – It's Only UsKendra Morris - BansheeCarlton Jumel Smith feat Cold Diamond & Mink – Love Our Love Affair (inst)Richard Swift – Lady LuckWhoa Dakota - Patterns Part III (63:10)Alanna Royale – Fall In Love AgainMadonna – Bad GirlSAULT – Don't Waste My TimeMichael Kiwanuka – One More NightA Tribe Called Quest – We Can Get DownNai Palm – Crossfire / So Into You Part IV (100:11)Alanna Royale – Cruel Cruel World Yola – StarlightMonophonics – SuffocatingWhoa Dakota – Walk Right ByShannon Shaw – Broke My OwnCurtis Harding – I Won't Let You Down

In the 30 years since A Tribe Called Quest dropped their debut LP—People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm—the group's iconic status has become unquestionable. But on this episode of TMS, Scoop, Isaac, Jehan and Arthur get together to explore a more controversial title: Is A Tribe Called Quest the most important group in hip-hop history? Get ready for a compelling, all out debate that covers everyone from The Pharcyde to Dilla to Kendrick Lamar, while taking the time to investigate the brilliance that has defined ATCQ for three decades—and counting.
The art of collaborating is nothing new. It's actually more prominent than ever, but mainly to mask the lack of talent these days. Guest spots can offer important co-signs, sometimes a necessary one. Whether it's initiated by the label or the artist, “the collabo” was a beautiful thing in the 90s. There's an unwritten rule that if you gave a verse, you'd later receive a verse. The “friends and favors” card was often used back then. Collabos helped gain exposure, the ability to cross-sell and increased your album sales. Sometimes, you jumped started your career off a guest appearance, like Busta Rhymes on ATCQ's Scenario. If you had the pull, the budget or just wanted to put on someone from your own camp, you did that. Classic collabos helped launch the careers of Nas, Big L, Redman, Keith Murray, AZ and Snoop Doggy Dogg. You had memorable collabos verses from Kid Hood (Scenario Remix), LL Cool J (Rampage), Biggie (Flava In Ya Ear Remix), Inspectah Deck (Above The Clouds), Capadonna (Winter Warz), R.A. The Rugged Man (Uncommon Valor), Foxy Brown (I Shot Ya Remix), Kendrick Lamar (Control) and just about every Big Pun, Jadakiss, Andre 3000, Black Thought and Canibus verse. On Episode 57, we're joined by the legendary Spice 1. His resume runs deep and features some of the biggest and best collabos such as Jealous Got Me Strapped, The Murda Show, Dusted N Disgusted, Nuthin But The Gangsta, Santa Rita Weekend, Hard 2 Kill and the I Got 5 On It remix to name a few. Spice 1 shares stories about working with 2Pac, Method Man, MC Eiht, E-40 as well as some of his favorite collabos he's done. We also talk Menace To Society, his Houston roots and his newest album Platinum OG. A Homage To Collabos features some of favorites, some remixes and some really obscure collabos. It's also sequenced in a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon kind away to help with the flow. We'll be releasing A Homage To Collabos Pt. 2 with Ras Kass next week to show you 2020, we ain't playing no more! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
