Tevis Trower is the founder and CEO of Balance Integration, a consulting firm dedicated to humanizing the work experience. Trower is a pioneer in the realm of cultural transformation, leveraging her expertise in mindfulness, leadership development and employee engagement to create an environment where people feel valued and in turn, develop a commitment to the organization's goals. Balance Integration boasts a client list that includes heavy-hitters like Disney and Morgan Stanley, and Trower's work has been featured in Forbes, Fortune and Business Week, among many other media outlets. Today, Trower explains why we cannot change work culture with policy statements, describing how leaders must move beyond proclamations around bringing the whole self to work and truly embody the authenticity they value. She also explores the idea of employee engagement, discussing the mistake leaders make in driving performance rather than engagement and outsourcing it as a problem to solve rather than a behavior to model. Listen in for Trower's insight on the significance of leadership alignment and learn how you can foster a new sense of possibility in an organization at large. Key Interview Takeaways We cannot change work culture with policy statements. To truly shift the environment in an organization, we must go beyond proclamations and take our powerful mission and values statements to heart. Code switching implies a fear of being authentic at work. Trower points out that bringing our whole selves to work serves as an elixir, while the fear of being ourselves creates an environment where we must conform in order to feel safe. Leaders must role model authenticity in the workplace. If there's a satisfaction gap in what you get out of work, then there is a contribution gap in what you're bringing to work, and Trower suggests that the authenticity in organizations begins with the leaders' willingness to show up as ‘more human.' Engagement is not a problem to solve. Corporate leadership tends to focus on driving performance, while they outsource engagement to someone else in the organization. Trower argues that to engage employees, leaders need to see engagement as a behavior to model. Leadership alignment enables cultural empowerment. When the C-suite works to close the gap between what they want to create and what they are manifesting now, such a shift creates a new sense of possibility in the organization at large. Tevis Trower, founder and CEO of Balance Integration, knows that working well and living well are symbiotic. Tevis is a pioneer in optimizing corporate cultures, and has been heralded as a “corporate mindfulness guru for the new millennium.” She has coached powerful organizations ranging from Disney to Morgan Stanley in optimizing their most precious assets: human beings. She has created and facilitated global executive immersions for prestigious organizations including Harvard Business Review Events, Young Presidents Organization, PWC, Bloomberg LP, Viacom, Google and The Economist on issues including mindfulness, executive lifestyle, personal mastery, innovation, and the role of consciousness in creating radical success. Tevis has also been featured in media outlets like Forbes, BusinessWeek, Fortune, CIO, The New York Post, Financial Times, MSNBC, FoxBusiness, Yoga Journal, and more. In her conversation with us, Tevis ventures beyond traditional wellness initiatives to what she sees as the real reason why people are not more happy and fulfilled – in their career and life in general. As Tevis explains, there is much talk these days about being our best selves, yet that goal can actually prevent us from finding the true happiness and fulfillment that we are looking for. Companies seek to engage and optimize their human capital, yet unless the real issues are addressed, they will never experience the best their employees have to offer. Listen in as Tevis Trower outlines both the problem and the solution for building effective leaders and an organization that values humanity while driving extraordinary results. Key Takeaways If you want to build a great organization for human beings you need to start by building a great relationship with your own inner human being. The under-belly of being our best selves is the allergy to anything that is not our best selves – the vulnerability of humanity, and attending to anything that still needs attending to. Inner fullness begins with self-inquiry.   We need to make room for humanity in our lives and workplaces. You don’t shift culture through policy and programs. The only way you shift culture is by changing conversations. When you only define your sense of self-worth based on your last win, it makes it really hard to think broadly, to be creative, and follow your gut. When you know that you exist and have value above and beyond your last business win, how much more confident are you in taking risks and making quality decisions? Bal-A-Vis-X is a series of Balance/Auditory/Vision eXercises, all of which are deeply rooted in rhythm. Using sand-filled bags and racquetballs, the exercises address visual tracking deficiencies, auditory imprecision, impulsivity, balance and anxiety issues. Some exercises combine bags/balls with feet patterns. More than half can be done while seated. Requiring multiple thousands of mid-line crossings in three dimensions, exercises are steadily rhythmic, each executed at a pace that naturally results from proper physical techniques. Bal-A-Vis-X is a carefully modulated system of exercises that become increasingly complex OR simplified/modified for those with the most severe special needs. The youngest to use the program on a regular basis is three. The oldest thus far is 105.
