EPISODE 321 -- Mike Trower on Leaving Jeff Gordon, Winning with Dale Jarrett and Returning to Hendrick Motorsports

The Scene Vault Podcast

In the third and final installment of our interview, Mike Trower talks about his decision to leave Hendrick Motorsports not long after the departure of legendary crew chief Ray Evernham … and how that meant winning another Daytona 500 with Dale Jarrett and Robert Yates Racing.   And, as it turned out with Mike, you CAN go back home again. He returned to Hendrick Motorsports to change tires for Jimmie Johnson. You guessed it … he won ANOTHER couple of championship rings with Jimmie.    We then dive into the September 30, 1999 issue of Winston Cup Scene.   Rumors were running rampant that Ray Evernham was on his way out at Hendrick Motorsports … AND he'd also spoken at a recent NASA awards ceremony at the Cape in Florida.   Mark Martin scores his first win of the Winston Cup season on what was a really good day for MOST of Roush Racing. We've got kind of a dubious Rick Mast Report from Dover … and Darrell Waltrip complains about not getting enough provisional starting positions.   Casey Atwood wins at Dover, while Dale Earnhardt Jr and Matt Kenseth have at it on the backstretch … actually, Dale has at it … and Matt pays the price. NASCAR hammers Greg Biffle for a truck series infraction at Las Vegas, a penalty that would eventually cost him that year's truck championship.   Felix Sabates has a difference of opinion with track president Denis McGlynn on Dover's facilities. Finally … the more things change, the more they stay the same … the NASCAR family responds to the devastation of a major hurricane that hit eastern North Carolina. In the second of three installments of our interview with Mike Trower, he describes moving from Old School Dave Marcis to the decidedly New School Hendrick Motorsports team of driver Jeff Gordon and crew chief Ray Evernham.   We then dig into the November 16, 1995 edition of Winston Cup Scene.   Dale Earnhardt dominates the season finale at Atlanta, but it's Jeff Gordon who walks away with the Winston Cup championship.   Darrell Waltrip collects what turns out to be the final pole position of his career and Dave Marcis discusses rumors about his NASCAR future. Finally … we talk about this sport's unbreakable records.   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com! After a heartfelt tribute to Gary McCredie, the founding editor of Grand National/Winston Cup Scene , we consider Mike Trower's resume … SEVENTY-THREE points wins with Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett and Jimmie Johnson and FIVE Cup championships.   That's extraordinarily rarified air … and he did it as the Ultimate WEEKEND Warrior.   In the first of what will be three installments of our interview, Mike talks about his humble beginnings in the sport with Helen Rae and Dave Marcis, the schedule he had to keep between the race track and his full-time job with Duke Energy and the evolution of what it took to compete … and survive … on pit road. We then take a deep dive into the November 1, 1984 issue of Grand National Scene.   There's a big multicar crash, a flip and one heck of a finish between Bill Elliott and Harry Gant in the Winston Cup event at Rockingham.    The weekend is a sad one for Sam Ard, his friends and family after he was involved in a terrible crash that ended his driving career. This issue also features a story on Junior Johnson and his influence up and down pit road.   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com! For more than six decades, Robin Trower's career has known no bounds. At the age of 76, the British guitarist can reflect on a journey in which he has planted flags across the musical sphere and played every role imaginable. He's been the driving force behind Sixties icons Procol Harum. The transatlantic solo star who filled US stadiums with 1974's Bridge Of Sighs. The collaborator and occasional supergroup member. The elder-statesman songwriter whose late period still crackles with invention. Few would dispute that the title of Trower's latest album – No More Worlds To Conquer – is a fair summary of the thumbprint he has left on the musical universe. But as he reminds us, it should not be misinterpreted as his mission being accomplished. “I definitely feel like I'm still reaching,” he considers, “with the guitar, and the songs, and everything else.” On Waiting For The Rain To Fall, Trower's playing is crystalline as a dew drop, while the aching finale, I Will Always Be Your Shelter, offers a solo whose masterful touch is compelling as anything in his catalogue. “That's a real high point for the playing,” he nods. “And Waiting For The Rain To Fall, I think is influenced by Tamla Motown. It's a bit left-of-centre for me to do a song like that. But I think it's potent stuff. I'm hoping this album will surprise people.” Once again, Trower also handles bass duties, but as a lifelong servant of the song over his own ego, he didn't hesitate to enlist other musicians. “Chris Taggart is on drums,” he explains. “He's a wonderful drummer, and he's done the last three or four albums. And I started to realise, after I'd tried to sing these songs myself, that I wasn't vocally up to it. Richard Watts has done a great job on vocals. He's got a fantastic instrument – such a soulful singer – and he's willing to get it exactly how I'm hearing it in my head. The other great thing about having Richard is that there's quite a few songs on this album that I wouldn't be able to play and sing live at the same time.” Yet Trower also addresses the contemporary problems in front of him. “There's three or four songs there that cover what I'm thinking about. The Razor's Edge and Cloud Across The Sun, those are definitely about my dissatisfaction with the politicians of the day, pointing the finger at the ones that don't keep their promises. But then, with Deadly Kiss, the lyric is someone talking to a friend who has become a junkie. There's broken-hearted songs. There's love songs. “ “It was difficult, but I'm glad I did it,” he considers. “This album is an evolution. I'm hoping that's what is always happening with my music. There's a huge step between Bridge Of Sighs and now. It's like anything. The more you work on it, in theory, the better you should be at it. And I definitely feel like this album is one of the best things I've ever done.”

Dr. Cathy Trower offers insights in the board’s role during a major crisis, such as the current pandemic. She discusses the importance of a partnership between the president and board chair as well as the communication channels that need to be created in a time of crisis.  The president of Trower & Trower has more than two decades of experiencing providing governance consulting to colleges and universities as well as other nonprofits. She combines her knowledge of governance and strategic thinking along with the skill of building high-performance teams.   Taking a Different Role  Higher education boards are facing significant challenges created by the current pandemic. First and foremost, boards need to remain extremely focused during a time of crisis. They need to realize that some items that are less of a priority during this crisis need to be tabled. Instead, board members should focus on the priorities of the institution’s president in the current moment. Additionally, boards need to focus their efforts on backstopping the president.  The partnership between the board and the president is even more critical in a crisis. The president needs to be communicating very clearly, primarily through the board chair.  Boards are not meeting together often at this point, so it is critical that the chair and the executive committee, if there is one, take responsibility for opening and maintaining clear lines of communications and responses with the full board.   Essential Focus Areas  The key areas that boards and presidents need to address during this crisis are:  Maintain clear and regular communications. Candor is needed so that surprises are minimized.   We recommend scheduling a weekly meeting at the very least between the president and the board chair during this crisis. However, the frequency can vary based on the type of institution and the partnership. In general, consistent and clear communication about what’s happening on the ground and what’s needed is of great importance during this time.  Ensure immediate needs are met. Early in the pandemic, the initial pressing issues involved moving courses online and making sure that students, faculty and staff were able to continue to handle their responsibilities in a safe manner. Now institutions need to focus on ensuring that faculty, students and families are getting what they need.   Discuss the institution’s financial situation. Boards and the president need to have discussions about the current financial situation as well as projections for the fall term. Higher education institutions are currently trying to secure early enrollment commitments. However, students and families are not sure about enrolling in the fall just yet. Some institutions are trying to use Zoom and other technology to build bonds with prospective students in place of the in-person campus visits. Trust also needs to be built now between higher education faculty and staff in conversations with students to help them build a relationship with the institution.  Finding Innovative Ways to Govern  Some boards have established a coronavirus taskforce that includes the president or his/her designee, some board members, some senior staff and potentially some faculty. These task forces are charged with considering what the institution should be thinking about currently and ways that faculty, board members and community members can be mobilized to provide assistance, i.e., risk and scenario planning.  In addition, boards also should look at their committee structures because work is available for various committees that are part of the regular governance structure. They need to think strategically about the committee’s work. For example, compliance/risk, finance, and academics/student life committees should be looking at the same areas using different lenses. Therefore, creating a cross-committee task force can ensure a common conversation that puts everyone on the same page, which can help to push out topics/discussions to the appropriate committee(s).  While the executive committee offers a great starting point for this type of work, we also recommend expanding involvement beyond this group of individuals. Trower recommends creating a subset of the committee and then adding some faculty in order to get their input. Students also could be involved.  This type of taskforce should be tasked with thinking about big picture issues. For example, what is going to happen in the summer and fall in relation to staff? How is the institution going to ensure equity? How can the board ensure that minimal lay-offs happen? How can the institution take care of employees through all of this?  Accelerated Change  Higher education has traditionally been very slow to change. It will be interesting to see which institutions can make faster and better shifts related to what is coming up because of the pandemic. Online education is only part of it.   Additionally, there are so many financially fragile institutions who were struggling prior to the pandemic, and it will accelerate many institution’s financial difficulties, requiring more institutions to merge and close. Higher education has always looked at a merger or acquisition as a failure on the part of the acquiree, and some institutions will choose to close instead of be part of a merger.   This perspective needs to change and leaders need to think about what’s best for the students.  Finding the Silver Lining  The board or its task force should also look at the hidden benefits created by this current situation, such as the creation of innovative partnerships with other organizations, galvanizing the faculty to be part of the solution, and thinking about staffing in different ways.   Additionally, the work of the board should be considered in new ways, e.g., is the board serving as an advocate for the institution among stakeholders and within the community.   Alumni involvement also is needed in this time. Institutions that have been proactive in alumni engagement are more likely to reap the benefits—whether that’s financial or support--during this downturn. However, institutions that have neglected their alumni may not fare well.   This will be a moment when many alumni will make a choice whether to give to support their alma mater or not, and they want to hear a strong message from the president and board chair about what’s happening in the institution, what the plans are for the future, and how the institution is going to use this current situation to make itself better, stronger and more nimble.  Strategic Thinking  Agility is important. The board needs to be nimble and push the institution to be more nimble. This requires getting board clients to think forward instead of looking backwards. If the board can embrace a forward-looking approach instead of only considering last year’s data and today’s crisis de jour, this will position the board to be more adaptive. This, in turn, carries over to the institution. The boards that are more poised to be able to deal with metaphorical whitewater rapids and headwinds are going to do better in this current situation.   Boards also can build out a risk / scenario planning map that looks at the likelihood of crisis events and projects the impact on the institution. Institutions that have these types of planning are able to quickly put the coronavirus into their calculations and determine what needs to be done. As boards shift items around in the plan, the institutional focus becomes clearer.   The task force along with the president also should triage everything that is going on. They determine what situations are critical in nature and what can be pushed out to a later date.  Learning from What Happened  At the end of the crisis, there needs to be an evaluation process to allow the board and the institution to learn from what happened. This often requires venturing into uncharted territory. While uncomfortable, this is at the heart of dealing with adaptive challenges. This approach requires taking steps, learning from them, and then doing course corrections without beating oneself up when something doesn’t work.  Boards also need to evaluate the holes in the expertise of their members that were uncovered during this crisis. Varied types of expertise need to be a planned part of selection to the board so that there is a diversity of abilities and knowledge. If the board doesn’t have a specific area of expertise that is needed during this current black swan event, it’s important to reach out to the task force or the alumni to find someone who does.  Three Recommendations for Higher Education Leaders and Boards  Dr. Trower suggested three takeaways for higher education leaders and board members:  Listen to the institution’s president and be there if the president needs you. There needs to be regular and clear communication between the president and the board chair.   Focus on what needs to be communicated to the rest of the board. Board members want to be involved and can start reaching out directly to the president. However, this is not the time to do this. Therefore, it’s up to the board president to create a clear communication channel that allows board members to get regular updates.   Determine how to galvanize the talent available to be of the most helpful and create the most value.  Bullet Points  In a crisis, the partnership between the board chair and the president is critical. These two individuals need to communicate regularly and clearly about what is happening.  The board chair needs to be the primary contact for the rest of the board about what is happening. Board members should not be contacting the president at this time.  Institutional boards and presidents need currently need to be focusing on how to help students, faculty and staff have what they need.   The board and the president needs to analyze the institutional financial situation. They need to consider that fall enrollment commitments may not come in until this situation settles.   This crisis offers innovative ways to govern. For example, a task force can help the institution think through the various angles related to coronavirus, including financial implications, academic/student life and risk management.  This crisis is going to require boards and institutions to be more agile. That is going to be a major change for higher education.  Many institutions that are financially struggling may have to consider closing or merging. They need to keep the students at the forefront of this decision.  Alumni involvement is critical at this time. Alumni who have been involved can help the institution survive this crisis.   Strategic planning and risk planning are critical and can help the institution focus on what’s important.   Boards and presidents need to spend time after this crisis is over to learn from what happened and how it was handled. This will help the institution be better able to adapt in future crisis situations.    Links to Articles, Apps, or websites mentioned during the interview:  Trower & Trower  Guests Social Media Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cathy-trower-a84b5413/    The Change Leader’s Social Media Links:  Website: https://thechangeleader.com   Website: https://changinghighered.com   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdrumm/  Twitter: @thechangeldr   Email: podcast@changinghighered.com

Tevis Trower is the founder and CEO of Balance Integration, a consulting firm dedicated to humanizing the work experience. Trower is a pioneer in the realm of cultural transformation, leveraging her expertise in mindfulness, leadership development and employee engagement to create an environment where people feel valued and in turn, develop a commitment to the organization's goals. Balance Integration boasts a client list that includes heavy-hitters like Disney and Morgan Stanley, and Trower's work has been featured in Forbes, Fortune and Business Week, among many other media outlets. Today, Trower explains why we cannot change work culture with policy statements, describing how leaders must move beyond proclamations around bringing the whole self to work and truly embody the authenticity they value. She also explores the idea of employee engagement, discussing the mistake leaders make in driving performance rather than engagement and outsourcing it as a problem to solve rather than a behavior to model. Listen in for Trower's insight on the significance of leadership alignment and learn how you can foster a new sense of possibility in an organization at large. Key Interview Takeaways We cannot change work culture with policy statements. To truly shift the environment in an organization, we must go beyond proclamations and take our powerful mission and values statements to heart. Code switching implies a fear of being authentic at work. Trower points out that bringing our whole selves to work serves as an elixir, while the fear of being ourselves creates an environment where we must conform in order to feel safe. Leaders must role model authenticity in the workplace. If there's a satisfaction gap in what you get out of work, then there is a contribution gap in what you're bringing to work, and Trower suggests that the authenticity in organizations begins with the leaders' willingness to show up as ‘more human.' Engagement is not a problem to solve. Corporate leadership tends to focus on driving performance, while they outsource engagement to someone else in the organization. Trower argues that to engage employees, leaders need to see engagement as a behavior to model. Leadership alignment enables cultural empowerment. When the C-suite works to close the gap between what they want to create and what they are manifesting now, such a shift creates a new sense of possibility in the organization at large. We sat down with Captain Debbie Waingrow two days before her retirement flight at Alaska Airlines. Captain Waingrow made history at Alaska Airlines by becoming the first Woman to be selected as a Check Captain to train, evaluate, and certify her fellow pilots. Debbie comes from a family with deep roots in aviation. As a child, she was always at the airport hanging around with her cousin, Jill Richardson, who also later became an Alaska Airlines Captain. They spent a lot of time riding horses near the airport and hanging around their family's aviation business. The two girls were always taking flights in the family airplanes, and they had their solo flights on the same day.  Please join us as Captain Debbie Waingrow shares the story of her amazing career in aviation.

On this Sunday's Lost Arts Radio broadcast, we have the honor of welcoming back electronic technology expert Dr. Barrie Trower. Dr. Trower is recognized in the U.K. and globally as a top level expert in electronic warfare, wi-fi technology and many connected fields. Unfortunately, the proliferation of wi-fi and related technology does qualify as electronic warfare against the general public, by the partnership of government with global corporations. We will discuss with Dr. Trower many aspects of the current out of control proliferation of wi-fi, which is promoted to the public as cutting edge science and a great boon for humanity, while in reality it is a threat to our continued existence on this planet, and to other life forms as well. Dr. Trower is an example of how high-level technical expertise can be combined with exceptional personal character, to make great contributions to the future of humankind and the entire biosphere of Earth. As an educator, Dr. Trower is superb, and his simple motivation to do all he can to reduce suffering is easily contagious, and hopeful for the future of all life. Take advantage of this rare chance to learn from one of the best and most knowledgable people in the field of electronic technology. Hell's bells, it's another in-garage Garage Hour.  THIS is the purest gearhead talk, surrounded by fire extinguishers and beers and Muslim wrenches and ammunition and AR parts and truck parts and racecar parts and beer! We've got to confess: this one's a little dark.  Hostus Maximus Justin Fort, Surfer Greg and Majid from GSR Car talk near-death experiences, ethnicity and religious humor, things in the ocean that could kill you, attack Muppets, bullets and where to put them…  But then again, if the Garage Hour did it, you know it's PG, and meant to make you think, not close your mind. Topics on this one vary from the show's budding relationship with Helix Brewing Company in lovely, scenic industrial La Mesa, beers that matter, why black guns matter, why Justin is an honorary black guy, truck parts, truck mud, making a black & tan with vanilla cream ale and chocolate porter, and and why no one will order the Ocean Beach Pizza Port's Stinky Hippie Pizza. From there, the cohosts hit their rhythm - Bond versus Bond, Twitting versus Instagramming, engineers versus ARs, blowtorch versus vice, technology versus trendy, VW versus the US gov't, red versus yellow versus pink beer, and attack dolphins versus SEALs. To tie it all up, yup, we do indeed chat about cohost Majid's recent escapade of driving (sorry, sailing) his new deep-vee to Catalina for only making it four miles offshore before it shuts down on him…  Of course, the first thing he did was call the Garage Hour, mostly because we're awesome, but also because we have friends with tugboats. He is an amazing leader with a wicked sense of humor! In this Podcast, we talk to Zip about his Naval career. We learn about the rigorous training, and what it is like to land a jet on an Aircraft Carrier. Zip also tells us about his duties as a Landing Signal Officer (LSO), and what happens when you have a fake Admiral on your plane. After leaving the Active Duty Navy, Zip went to Alaska Airlines to begin his civilian career. He had to learn the differences and nuances between Military flying and flying a Commercial Airliner with 140 passengers on board. Captain Don Fox took him under his wing, and showed him the real way that an airliner should be flown. Zip was part of the Check Airman team that indroduced the MD-83 Aircraft to Alaska Airlines. He later became the Fleet Captain on that jet. We discuss the challenges that they faced in bringing a group of hard core stick and rudder pilots into the digital flight guidance age. Alaska Airlines spent several years flying into the Russian Far East, and Zip shares some of the challenges of flying into that part of the world.  Zip says "Put your ego aside, and learn and practice, learn and practice." I hope that you will enjoy our time with Zip as much as I did. Pure Magic! Contact us at: www.talkingflight@gmail.com

Comedian Greg Barris talks starting comedy at age 9, young roommates, and Mind Warriors.  Work life balance coach Tevis Trower teaches people how to chill out.  Comedian Seaton Smith has been smoking too much weed, sworks it and discusses the ups and downs of show business. Musician Dawn Landes a former Kentuckianan has been working on a musical called Row and is playing at Lincoln Center on Valentine's Day. Go see her in her new cape! Here Dawn sings two of her original beautiful songs, Bluebird and Money In the Bank. Thanks to DJ Duane Harriot for bringing his WDEK playlist for the after party and  thanks to everyone who made it out to the show! We luv it!  We will see you at the February show when we discuss Katy Perry's Super Bowl wig!
