Today, we're stepping back to 1995 to explore Battle Arena Toshinden, a trailblazing 3D fighting game that debuted as a launch title for the Sony PlayStation. We start by uncovering its origins as a collaboration between Takara and Tamsoft, and its role in showcasing the potential of early 3D gaming with weapon-based combat and groundbreaking sidestepping mechanics. Then, we'll examine how the game's popularity led to its wide-ranging legacy, including sequels, ports, and multimedia tie-ins like manga and anime. Finally, we'll reflect on its influence on the fighting game genre, setting the stage for future classics like Tekken and Soul Edge. So, grab your controller and join us as we battle through history on today's trip down Memory Card Lane. Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co

Steve and Andre finish off their anime extravanganza as well as 2023 with one last direct-to-video classic: Battle Arena Toshinden! Eiji and Kayin have tender moments on a mountaintop, Sofia takes a shower, Duke rides in on a horse, and I guess they fight a bunch too. But was it good, or was it "good"? Well... I have a fairly modest game collection, but I almost never "have" time to play them. I keep telling myself I'll play these games one day, like when the kids are older and out of the house, or when I have fewer commitments in my life. I also wonder if this "time" will ever come, and should I just sell all these games and play what I have time for. I have a feeling I know what you guys think about this, but I'd be interested in hearing it. WarriorofWASD I feel this. I have tons of unbeaten games and a wishlist that is just as big. I had to redeem my game time by sticking to motion games (VR and Switch) for exercise and multiplayer with my friends to make it a healthy hobby. Outro Thanks for listening to the RetroLogic Podcast! Within the medium, you'd think fighting games would have it good when it comes to anime. Not so much. For the most part, fighting game anime is very hit and miss. More miss than hit and Battle Arena Toshinden is a huge miss with a flimsy plot that makes zero sense and characters coming and going throughout the OVA.
