In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Jake Heilbrunn, an international TEDx speaker, best-selling author, host of Curious with Jake Heilbrunn Podcast and Head of Partnerships at Conscious Counsel.Purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life. It is the reason why you get up in the morning. Purpose can guide your life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create meaning. Purpose can heal. Purpose can heal anxiety and so much more.Jake and Amrit talk about Jake’s anxiety healing journey, his path towards self-discovery and purpose, and his greatest lessons learned along the way.At the age of seventeen, Jake started university and began to break out with hives, rashes all over his body and soon after with anxiety. He was on a path of pressure, a path based on expectations of others, a path where he certainly was not happy and was causing more pain than good.Jake wanted to change. He wanted to pursue his dreams. He felt the urge to experience another way of life, a journey of self-discovery. At the age of 18, he took courage and made the hard decision to leave college. He bought a one way ticket to Guatemala where he spent months backpacking through Central America all alone, without a phone and three words of spanish. He wanted to know who he was, what he was capable of and needed to pave his own trail. He listened to his inner voice following his intuition, trusting his instincts that things were going to work out.Jake’s body was telling him something, something in him wasn’t aligned. Taking this new path, not only helped him recover from the rash, but also helped him figure out who he was, unrevealing all the opportunities that have led his life to where he is today. He also discovered the importance of having courage and following it and how important it is to trust yourself. Furthermore, Amrit and Jake dive deep into a raw conversation about Jake getting this lesson twice but in a different way.A couple of years later, Jake’s life was knocked over. He was hit by Lyme disease. For almost ten months in severe pain and suffering, he had to be in bed. This impacted his entrepreneurial life, having to bow out from the company he co-created from 0 to $2.5M in revenue in just 2 years, his personal and his love life as well. Jake felt completely shut down and all alone.Listening to people who have been through the same chronic disease, surfing the ocean, and being in flow with the waves and every single moment, have helped Jake on his healing journey. This extremely challenging disease helped him discover his hypesensitive energy and learn how to be hyper aligned with saying no and letting go. Jake affirms that the journey towards recovery was about learning to listen. He strongly believes his journey here on earth is intuition and that the universe talks to us in many different ways. It appears with a whisper but if you don't pay attention every time it will appear with more and more force. In this chapter of Inspired Evolution you will learn how to heal anxiety and depression through purpose, learn how to take courage to do things you believe are right by following your intuition, discover the beauty of peace by letting things go and discover that in darkness there is always hope.“I say to myself: How can I be the most aligned with the thing that sets my soul on fire? Because that is the medicine for the world!”“When you pursue something that you choose, even if it is scary, it makes problems less haunting”About Jake Heilbrunn:At the age of nineteen, Jake Heilbrunn published 'Off the Beaten Trail', a memoir that has been described as the young dude version of 'Eat Pray Love' fused with a modern-day 'Into the Wild'....but with a happy ending ;) The book became #1 on Amazon in 2 categories, has over 50 5-star reviews, and has gained the attention of multiple NYT best-selling authors, including Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup of the Soul founder, 500+ Million copies sold), The San Diego Union-Tribune, Psychology Today, and various other media outlets. He is a passionate TEDx speaker, who has spoken to 15,000+ people across 6 countries, to audiences ranging from High School assemblies, Universities like USC, corporations like REMAX and organizations like NAMI. When Jake speaks, his intention is to inspire people to replace anxiety with passion, find what makes them tick, feel at peace with their mental health journey and live purposefully. In 2017, Jake co-founded and built The Idea Collective with his business partner, Taylor Conroy. From scratch, they grew the company from 0 to $2.5M in revenue in 2 years and helped over 200 purpose-driven leaders share their messages with the world, landing talks at TED, TEDx, Fortune 500 companies, Universities and features in Goalcast, Forbes, ABC & Entrepreneur. They helped speakers clarify their message, land their stage, deliver their message and spread it online to elevate their mission and purposeOvernight, on October 17th, 2019, Jakes’s life turned upside-down. Lyme Disease hit him like a train. Bedridden in extreme pain, and unable to work, he stepped down from the company and parted ways with his business partner, no longer fit to work. The next 10 months were the hardest and darkest of his life. He produced a film, 'Waves of Healing,' on his story going through Lyme Disease and the healing power of the ocean and surfing. While he is still on this healing journey and has a long way to go, he is happy to have made tremendous progress and is at least functional again.Jake is the host of the podcast "Curious with Jake Heilbrunn" where he interviews fascinating entrepreneurs, authors, healers, musicians and pro athletes. He loves diving deep with people who inspire him, learning their triumphs, dark moments, failures, successes, lessons and the juicy stuff that can’t be seen on social media.Tune In: Welcome Jake Heilbrunn to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)Where replacing anxiety with purpose came from:(02:00)“The dark can lead you to your own hero’s journey”Stress symptoms notifying non-alignment:(06:10)“Looking back I understand my body was saying something was wrong”Challenging bits pointing to the right direction:(08:37)“Know when to say no and let go”About recalibrating a mindset: changing paths to deal with anxiety and then getting knocked with Lyme disease:(15:57)“The inability to relax opened me up to what the lyme presented”Intuition as a gift brought from healing journey:(22:13)“Intuition guides you to your highest invest and joy”The process of labelling Jake’s anxiety:(24:43)“Take time and make space to uncover layers on top of you that are not you”What called Jake in going to Guatemala:(29:09) “Experience something drastically different to figure out who you are”Taking the courage to follow intuition:(32:17)“Take the courage to do what you believe is right”About pivotal moments:(37:26)“The unknown for whatever reason is so much harder to choose”About the challenges worth to take a different path:(39:20)“Pursuing things that you choose, even if scary, makes problems less haunting”The importance of service to others and how it helps Jake:(43:01)“Don't ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and do that”Jake Heilbrunn’s book and film:“Off the Beaten Trail: A Young Man’s Soul-Searching Journey Through Central America” book by Jake Heilbrunn: https://amz.run/4Ox2 - “a book that every young man should read. Sometimes chasing your dream requires you to walk away from the path you thought was laid out before you and make a leap and take a risk. If you allow others to tell you what’s right for your life, then chances are that you’ll encounter anxiety. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re talking to someone who has learned how to find peace and purpose in life. Jake Heilbrunn is a TEDx speaker and bestselling author of Off the Beaten Trail, endorsed by multiple NYT bestsellers. He has spoken across the US and internationally to 12,000+ people about replacing anxiety with purpose and creating a career you love. He is the co-founder of The Idea Collective, which helps thought leaders get their message out through speaking engagements and TEDx talks. Conquering anxiety When do you experience anxiety? When Jake went to college at age 18, he broke out with hives and rashes due to severe anxiety. Doctors couldn’t help, and he became depressed and questioned everything about his life. Jake left school with a backpack and flew to Guatemala, where he taught English and lived in the jungle for several months. When he learned mindfulness, meditation, peace, and purpose, he experienced a 180-degree shift. He soon learned that many young people are battling anxiety, so Jake felt the calling to help others through his speaking opportunities and writing his book. TWEET: Anxiety was debilitating, so once I found out what helped mine, I knew I could help others with the same thing. #chasingdreams Social media How much time do you spend on social media each day? Statistics show that American teenagers spend an average of 4 hours daily on social media! It’s the place where dangerous comparisons are made, and each one of us can play a part in changing the narrative. Social media can be used for good, but we all fall into the trap of viewing others’ lives as “perfect,” because of the selective glimpses we get. We have to remember that we see what people want us to see, and much of it isn’t real. We can see the same post as thousands of people, but we may have a different perception. Jake explains how our brains can be changed because of the influence of social media. TWEET: Social media plays a huge role in the lives of American teenagers, and it is changing their brains. #chasingdreams Taking a leap How do you know which path to follow? Jake didn’t know what career path he would follow after college, but he saw someone’s Instagram post about a meaningful trip to Mexico, and he decided to pay $1000 for a trip. Jake says the trip “called out to me.” As if the universe reinforced his decision, he won $1000 in an unrelated book marketing contest the next day. On his trip to Guatemala, he met the person who later became his business partner. Sometime later, they started The Idea Collective to help people develop TEDx talks. Their company has grown to a team of 13 people. TWEET: Knowing you’re not alone means everything. #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:03] What’s happened since Jake’s last appearance [2:58] Jake’s journey to mental health [5:23] How Jake’s perception has changed [10:53] Positivity that can be negative [12:56] What influences you the most [16:05] Jake’s company and his role [24:31] Following a gut instinct [28:56] A place of positivity   RESOURCES MENTIONED: Jake is previously featured on Episode 63 Jake on Facebook Jake on Instagram Jake on LinkedIn Jake’s Website Jake’s TEDx--How to Replace Anxiety with Purpose Jake’s Jack Canfield Interview Jake’s Behind-the-Scenes interview TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: I felt a calling to help others come through anxiety and find their purpose. #chasingdreams TWEET: Not knowing what you want to do is OK. #chasingdreams TWEET: One of our core values is radical transparency. #chasingdreams

Jake Heilbrunn is the author of “Off the Beaten Trail.”  It's the story of what he learned by going on a backpacking trip throughout Central America by himself with no phone or knowledge of Spanish. Listen To The Podcast:                           His book is a memoir.   I like memoirs.   Especially from people who have lived long and interesting lives. Jake is 19.  He hasn't been on the planet for very long. But as Indiana Jones once said, “It's not the years, it's the mileage.” Jake's got a story to tell. Especially because at 18… Jake decided to leave the life he was used to… and go on a solo backpacking trip through Central America with no phone OR knowledge of Spanish. We're going to talk to him about that trip… and some of the things he learned from the experience. Jake's been rocking it since his return.  In addition to his new book, he's also been featured in Psychology Today, ThoughtCatalog.com, and The San Diego Union-Tribune to name a few. He's living the DREAM THINK DO life… so I wanted to have him on.  Listen in because Jake has some wisdom to share that's way beyond his years! I'd love to hear what stood out to you about Jake's story. Leave a comment and let me know. Jake's Contact Information: Off the Beaten Trail by Jake Heilbrunn is available on Amazon. Website: www.jakeheilbrunn.com. Now, here's some show notes for those who enjoy that kind of thing: Summary What could happen if you dared to follow your heart and make a major change in your life? What if that action taking your life in a whole new direction? Nineteen-year-old Dream Think Doer Jake Heilbrunn focuses on these questions. He's written about his adventures in Off the Beaten Trail and is a sought-after speaker at high schools and universities across the country. Time-Stamped Show Notes [00:00] The first of three podcasts featuring three very diverse Dream Think Doers, at different points in their lives, who recognize the need to make a change to live more authentically. [05:00] Off the Beaten Trail is a memoir written by Jake Heilbrunn, covering his solo-backpacking trip through South America with no phone and no knowledge of the Spanish language. [07:00] An outbreak of hives and overwhelming anxiety made Heilbrunn question his life direction, and consider how he might make some changes. [10:46] Volunteer work in Guatemala was a brave choice, but it turned out that by following his gut feelings, Heilbrunn found a new way of being. [18:02] The contrasts between life in Guatemala and life in the U.S. brought Heilbrunn a new understanding of the world and the choices we make. [23:00] Heilbrunn finds inner power from his experience. He learned not to be afraid to put himself out there, and not to wait for someone to give him permission to live the life he dreamed of. [29:15] How a college career counselor changed his life by asking him two questions: What is the worst thing that could happen and what is the best thing that could happen. Dream Think Do – Jake Heilbrunn Off the Beaten Trail is a memoir of sorts, written by Jake Heilbrunn, covering his solo-backpacking trip through South America with no phone and no knowledge of the Spanish language. Memoirs often bring to mind work written by a person after reaching a seasoned age, but at nineteen, Jake already has some pretty incredible stories to tell, not just of his adventures, but of how he allowed the experiences to change his life. A Rough Start at College Heilbrunn's problems started in earnest three days after he left his home and family in San Diego to attend an out-of-state college where he knew no one. He broke out in hives and was pretty much plagued by them every day for the first semester. Doctors prescribed pills and creams, but nothing seemed to work, and they couldn't identify the source of his problem. If that wasn't enough, he also began manifesting signs of excessive anxiety.

Jake Heilbrunn Jaime Jay welcomes Jake Heilbrunn to today's podcast. He is an up and coming leader in his generation. At 19 years old, he self published an inspirational memoir titled Off the Beaten Trail. His inspirational videos and motivational talks have already reached thousands. He has also been featured in media outlets including The San Diego Union Tribune, Thought Catalog, and Psychology Today. Tune in for some valuable insights on how surfing the unknown can pave your way for success! Down the Low Path Growing up, Jake was a good student and played soccer for many years. He planned on going to college, but never really thought about other options. Shortly after entering college, however, he developed a chronic skin condition. “I realized that I was going on a path that I did not believe in.” –Jake Heilbrunn He was alone, and eventually became anxious for about 5 to 6 months. At the age of 18, he went through existential crisis. For this, he left college after the first semester and went backpacking at Guatemala for four months without a phone. Off the Beaten Trail Jake's amazing experience at Central America led him to write his book titled Off the Beaten Trail. It is a memoir about leaving an unfulfilling path to pursue a scary and exciting journey. It was unlike anything he has ever experienced. As a kid, Jake has traveled throughout America with his family. He has also went to England for a soccer trip. Those trips, however, were nothing sort of exotic. He knew that he needed to escape the confines of a system and be in a whole new different place. Kickstart to Success Jake knew about Kickstarter through a friend. He was writing the first draft of his manuscript when he was shown a video of a guy who biked from Oregon to Patagonia. That's when he got the idea. “You need to hit the ground running.” –Jake Heilbrunn It took him 5 months to prepare for the launch of his campaign trailer. After his trailer launch, he was able to raise an incredible amount of 3,000 US dollars in just 24 hours! He is really thankful that he was able to raise the funds to publish a professional quality book. “Being bold is having the courage to listen to your inner voice and live in a way that makes you light up despite what other people think.”   Jake Heilbrunn is an author, blogger and speaker who, at the age of 20, is already living a pretty bold life. He dropped out of college after his first semester, backpacked around South America alone (without a phone!) and then wrote a memoir about what he learned. Off the Beaten Trail is a coming-of-age pilgrimage that led Jake to realize there are unlimited ways to live and that people can create their own destinies when they trust their intuition and take action.   “When we take a leap of faith based on our gut, based on our intuition, things tend to work out and we find the happiness in the pursuit of what we're doing.”   By the end of his first semester of college, Jake was unhappy and unhealthy. He had a passion for traveling, but he was afraid of the unknown. Then a career counselor asked Jake two questions that changed his life: What is the worst thing that can happen? What is the best thing that can happen?   “I realized that I was living a life based on the expectations of others. The life I was living and the life I wanted to be living were not in alignment.”   Two months later, Jake was on a plane to Guatemala with a backpack, no cellphone and very little Spanish. He spent four months backpacking through Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica so he could explore other ways of life and disconnect from a society dominated by social media. As Jake learned to find happiness in the journey, he became a more process-oriented person. He adopted an intense morning routine, inspired by Tony Robbins, that helped him write 100,000 words in three months: Wake up at 5:30 AM. Take a cold shower. “It's the analogy of doing something uncomfortable to start your day because you get in the mindset of doing other uncomfortable things and just do it.” 10-minute guided mindfulness meditation. Make tea or coffee. Put on Hans Zimmer and write. Take a break to work out or do yoga. Go back to writing. At the end of the day, Jake would visualize jumping out of bed to start writing the next morning.   “With or without writing a book, writing is a very powerful way to process what you experience.”   Jake demonstrates the power of visualization to manifest a better (and bolder) life. By visualizing the future he wanted and taking bold action to achieve it, he manifested book endorsements from two awesome influencers that he really looks up to – Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles, and Chris Guillebeau, NYT Bestselling Author of The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit. Like a GPS system, visualization can keep you in route when you are heading towards a goal.   “Because I've been visualizing it, it's like I set this GPS in my head … If you take conscious action that's guided by vision there's less re-routing.”   You can pick up a FREE Kindle version of Jake's book on Nov. 2nd & Nov. 3rd by going to Amazon and searching for “Off the Beaten Trail: A Young Man's Soul-Searching Journey Through Central America” It's really awesome to see someone as young as Jake setting such a good example for people of all ages. He shows that life experience isn't necessarily tied to how many years you've been here, but how intentional you've been with the time you have had. Pick up a copy of Off the Beaten Trail (Kindle version is free Nov. 2-3, 2016) and get inspired.     SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What are some of the fears Jake had to overcome to get on the plane, and why didn't he bring a cellphone? How did Jake become exposed to the mindfulness practices and people like Tony Robbins that helped him become confident enough to write a book at 18-years-old? How has Jake's life changed since coming home? What does he do differently on a social level? What strategies can listeners employ to connect with influencers or mentors that they look up to? How can Jake advise people to start trusting their gut or their intuition, if they don't know how it feels? What is feedback Jake has gotten from people who have read his book or heard him speak, and what actions have they taken that he inspired them to make? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: A powerful story about self-reflection, self-growth and bold action How mindfulness practices helped Jake structure an effective morning routine How to listen to your intuition Strategies for connecting with influencers and mentors that you look up to Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Guest Links & Resources: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Off the Beaten Trail by Jake Heilbrunn (FREE on Kindle Nov. 2nd & Nov. 3rd) ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: You Are The One by Kute Blackson Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen The Success Principles by Jack Canfield & Janet Switzer The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau The Happiness of Pursuit by Chris Guillebeau   Production & Development for The Bold Life Movement Podcast by Podcast Masters

Jake has been featured in multiple large publications including Psychology Today, Thought Catalog, and The San Diego Union-Tribune. Jake’s a great guy who’s only 19 years old at the time of this conversation and Aimee is excited to see where Jake goes with such a good start. Be sure you listen to hear Jake’s inspiring story. TWEET: Ep. 63: Jake Heilbrunn - Leaving Behind What’s Familiar and Venturing Off the Beaten Trail @Jake_Heilbrunn Stress & anxiety in college are almost an epidemic, & nobody talks about it. The catalyst to leading Jake Heilbrunn to eventually spend his 19th year of life backpacking through Central America was when he was diagnosed with, what he was told, was a chronic skin condition. The doctors were baffled and Jake came to believe that the cause of the condition was the stress and anxiety of college life. He believed was trying to live up to so many expectations that were coming at him from the outside, his body simply couldn’t handle it. Jake believes that the same phenomenon is experienced by other college students all the time but nobody’s willing to talk about it. On this episode of Chasing Dreams, you can hear how and why Jake is starting to talk about it and what he’s doing to help high school students prepare for the stresses of college life. I disconnected in order to connect. That’s what Jake Heilbrunn said about one of the reasons for his backpacking trip through Central America. He knew that he needed to do something for himself, something that was in pursuit of his own dreams instead of what everyone expected of him. Part of that was disconnecting from technology for weeks at a time. Not only did he find himself not missing it, he also discovered that he didn’t really need it as much as he thought. He disconnected with technology to reconnect with himself. You can hear Jake’s encouraging story on this episode. TWEET: I #disconnected in order to connect @Jake_Heilbrunn The potential we all have can’t be underestimated. The lessons Jake Heilmann learned while backpacking through Central America are many, but one that has stuck with him powerfully and that he says to students that he speaks with at high schools around the country is that we all have incredible potential that is waiting to be accessed. Every human being has the power, the ability, the talent, the creativity to make something better, something greater of their lives. But it takes determination and courage to step out of what has become comfortably normal and take a risk for the sake of releasing that potential. Jake talks about what it’s like to experience that kind of fear and freedom, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. How Jake made a pitch to Jack Canfield, Drew Brees, and Chris Guillebeau. With the release of his new book, “Off The Beaten Trail,” Jake Heilbrunn is joining the ranks of many who have written and published a book. And as part of Jake’s efforts to promote and distribute the book Jake knew that an endorsement from a high profile personality would go a long way in providing the social proof he needed to make the book the success he wanted it to be. So what did he do? He started pitching people - like Jack Canfield and Drew Brees. Though neither of those ever responded, he didn’t give up until finally he got a very encouraging endorsement from Chris Guillebeau. It’s a testament to what can be done when you persist and refuse to allow discouragement to rule. Find out more about Jake’s journey from high school senior to self-published author, on this episode. Jake Heilbrunn is a 19-year old writer who just published his first book, Off the Beaten Trail, a true story about his journey dropping out of college at eighteen and solo-backpacking through Central America with no phone or knowledge of Spanish. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/149 In this episode, Jake discusses: -How a rare skin condition started him on his journey just three days after moving in to college. -How his journey began with an Ex-Hostage Raid & Recovery Vet. -The incredible experience of being able to trek through ancient Mayan ruins. -How he started writing the book the day after he got home from his journey. -His daily writing process and how he was able to finish the first draft of his book in just three months. -The idea of starting your day in an uncomfortable way (like with a cold shower) to prepare you for the next thing that you might not want to do (like write). -Detaching yourself from what you wrote that you thought was gold so that you can “kill your darlings.” -How he used Quantum Leap to help him get through the editing and publishing phases of his book. -How he stays consistent with his writing through his weekly blog. -The uncomfortable feeling of putting yourself out there and fearing rejection (and how to get past it). -How he took chances by trusting his gut and approaching Drew Brees and Chris Guillebeau to ask for their endorsement for his book. -His best and worst creative moments. Jake's Final Push will inspire you to follow your gut and trust that you know what’s best for yourself.   Quotes: “It definitely shifted my perspective.” “Allow yourself to write garbage.” “Writing just always called out to me.  Being able to articulate words and ideas into a story.” “It’s like taking that first step when you can’t see the whole staircase.” Links mentioned: Off the Beaten Trail by Jake Heilbrunn Wild by Cheryl Strayed Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. I love having conversations with people who have taken the road less traveled. I especially love having conversations with young people who have decided to resist the great societal pressures to do what the majority of other young people are doing. Jake Heilbrunn is such a young man. He dropped out of college to pursue a life of his own choosing, which was to buy a one-way ticket to Guatemala. Out of that experience, at the age of 19, he has written his first book: Off the Beaten Trail, A young man's soul-searching journey through Central America.  Listen to our conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show?
