A friend to both & Bob's favourite Program Director to work with, Nelson Millman joins today's show to catch up with Bob and John on Canada Day. There are two things that Nelson has a grasp on better than anyone else… Radio and how to work with Bob McCown. Both are put on display today as the three take a look through the lens of a Sports Talk Radio Program Director and analyze the growing trends of AM radio, why it works and why it doesn't while sharing stories of their time working together at Sportsnet.
Despite the loss in game one, you could argue that the Edmonton Oilers looked like the better hockey team. But after two games? It's a different story. Having been outshot, outmuscled, and outscored by the Florida Panthers last night, the Oilers are heading back to Edmonton down 2 games in the Stanley Cup Final. If you ask their head coach Kris Knoblauch, there is no reason to panic. But if you ask Bob McCown, the Oilers are done for. Sharing a similar sentiment, Darren Pang is, at the very least, not as fatalistic. From the team's defensive schemes to their physical style of play, the Florida Panthers look primed to take home the Cup. Not much can be said about the Oilers as Bob, John, and Darren spend today's episode sharing their thoughts on what they have seen from both teams after the first two games in Sunrise.
Brian interviews Bob McCown. Bob is the American-Canadian radio personality. He is best known as the long-time host of the Canadian sports talk show Prime Time Sports from its inception in 1989 until 2019 and now with his own podcast. He talks about the Leafs, what went wrong and what radical change is called for, the next round, the business of sports and arenas and the power of Big Ideas and what he thinks makes a great Mayor.
Before he became a staple in the NFL universe, before he captivated football fans around the world with his weekly "Monday Morning Quarterback" column, Peter King answered a call from Bob McCown, and the rest is history. After 44 years as a sportswriter, King is hanging up the pen. While attending 40 consecutive Super Bowls would be reason enough to take a break, there were other factors that went into his retirement. Having been in the business for so long, Peter has seen what it once was and has an opinion about where it's going. Bob and John reflect with Peter on his career but also delve deeper into why he's worried about the future of not only NFL reporting but the landscape of sports media as a whole.

Sports Broadcaster/Author/Podcaster John Shannon talks about 'Team Baby Blue'/Hockey Night in Canada [that themesong, those blazers!], who Dave Hodge telephoned FIRST immediately after his irreverent on-air ‘pen flip' in 1987, separating Don Cherry ‘the person' from ‘the performer,' pivoting from behind the camera to in front of the camera, podcasting with his longtime sidekick Bob McCown, why he is a ‘radio-holic,' the definitive answer as to whether the rest of Canada really hates the Toronto Maple Leafs [or not!], why ‘the period' is his absolute favourite form of punctuation, the difference between a ‘work stoppage' & a ‘lockout,' and his agreement with the host that televising hockey games WITHOUT any announcers would be an absolutely brilliant idea! John's book Evolve or Die, Hard-Won Lessons from a Hockey Life is published by Simon & Schuster and is available at your preferred bookseller! From September 5th 2022 It was 30 years ago today that Canadians were introduced to "The FAN". We also find some time to fit in some sports talk as we end the show with a brief discussion on the MLB Playoffs and the Toronto Blue Jays

Our NHL Insider and co-host of the Bob McCown podcast, John Shannon joined Matt and Blake in his regular Monday spot. Talked about Rutherford’s appearance on his show, late last week. John shared his thoughts on what most jumped out to him. Thinks it was interesting that he is not admitting to any major surgery will be done by March 21st. Thinks he really downplayed it, being so non-committal. Talked about how hockey people are creatures of habit. With the deadline being later, any trade talk right now is premature. Thinks MAF will be the number 1 discussed player. Thinks COL would be a good suitor but can’t take him early due to cap issues. Talked about Gary and his comments regarding Canada. What may happen is some date-swaps. Talked about ARI and where they could play. Talked about Rocky Wirtz and his comments that went unpunished by the NHL. Says there is nothing the NHL can do to punish him. Says that it’s up to the media and season ticket holders to provide checks and balances. John thinks Gary has a new contract that will keep him at the top for a long time. Our Canucks reporter and one half of the Rink Wide Show, Jeff Paterson joined us. Started talking about how the Canucks will fare without Quinn Hughes this week as he has entered Covid protocol. Thinks that the team should be able to take care of ARI without QH43. You’d want him back for the game on Saturday vs the Leafs. Talked about OEL quarterbacking the PP. It’s 20th with Quinn so OEL should be able to step in for a week and hold his own. Last thing this team needs is to be fooled with a win over ARI. Charean Williams joined us from Los Angelas, home of the SB this year. Sunny and warm this year. Pretty quiet so far but will pick up as the week moves on. Talked about the restrictions with everything going on. Sure the convention centre won’t be as crowded. Only in-person availability is on Friday. Talked about the Rams being the away team at home. The Bengals are a confident bunch. Talked about the potential of Stafford making it to the Hall of Fame. Talked about Kyler Murray and him stripping all mention of the Cardinals from social media. Talked about Lovie Smith and being on his way to HOU. Charean gave her prediction for the big game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Says this week has been the perfect storm because of how their opponents have rolled out. Backups and 2nd half of back to back games. Mike Russo joined Matt and Blake to talk about the Bruce Boudreau he covered in Minny. Would rather hang out and chat with beat writers than go back to the locker room after that. Talked about what he is like when things aren’t going well. Sure he does, when tension ratchets up. He has had some playoff disappointment. He has a good sense when to turn strict on them. There will be times where he raises his voice. Not always the cartoon character. Talked about the difference with Evason in MIN then they were with Bruce. Can only imagine the way he is salivating with the offensive firepower in Vancouver. Talked about “Bruce there it is”. Never heard of it in MIN but wishes he thought of it. One of the most notable changes in modern sports broadcasting can be found in the shift from a strict radio based medium to one which can be enjoyed at your leisure in the form of video segments or audio podcasts. Lucky for us, Bob McCown was around for the early beginnings of both of these mediums. After leaving Sportsnet, Bob managed to climb his way back up the charts with a new undertaking produced by his own company Fadoo Productions. With The Sign Off being a proud member of his team, we were pleased to have him on to talk us through his experiences and tell us some insider stories. You won't want to miss him telling us about his time spent with Muhammad Ali before his final match.
