The story follows four housewives in 1963 whose lives are transformed by starting a book club. Inspired by her 92-year-old mother’s experience with *The Feminine Mystique*, Bostwick highlights the power of books to change lives and foster civil discourse. She’ll visit the Duluth branch of the Gwinnett County Library on May 12 as part of her 11-state tour, celebrating the magic of shared stories and meaningful connections. STORY 2: Video tightens up timeline before Lawrenceville twins deaths, but questions remain A surveillance video from a Shell gas station on March 7 is aiding investigators in piecing together the mysterious deaths of Lawrenceville twins Qaadir and Naazir Lewis, found shot on Bell Mountain the next morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation initially labeled the case a murder-suicide, but the family disputes this, insisting the twins would not take their own lives. The video shows the twins casually eating snacks and drinking water, with no signs of distress. Questions remain about how they accessed the closed park and the timeline of their deaths. The case has also faced controversy after a firefighter shared scene photos, leading to their dismissal. STORY 3: Gwinnett Police Department's Situational Awareness and Crime Response Center receives statewide award The Gwinnett County Police Department’s Situational Awareness and Crime Response Center (SACRC) has earned a 2025 Georgia County Excellence Award for its innovative use of technology to enhance public safety. Part of the Gwinnett Safe Communities initiative, the SACRC uses tools like Flock Safety Cameras, license plate readers, and predictive analytics to track criminals, locate missing persons, and respond to crime in real time. In 2024, it contributed to over 250 arrests, recovered 80 stolen vehicles, and found 12 missing individuals. The award highlights the center’s success in fostering safer, more connected communities through technology and collaboration. As a disciple follows Jesus, they grow. That is what this preaching series is about. The path of discipleship involves being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and doing the things that Jesus did. In order to help the disciples grow, there were three things that Jesus gave them: proximity, teaching, and opportunity. A previous sermon has looked at proximity to Jesus by abiding in the vine, and a future sermon will look at how Jesus allowed his disciples to step out and have a go. This sermon will focus on learning from Jesus.
This is the third sermon in the ‘Path of Discipleship' series. At the heart of Jesus' call to his first disciples is the invitation to be with him. The path of discipleship is not primarily about a particular set of practices (although there are practices that help). Rather, it is about intentionally remaining in the presence of Jesus.
This is the second sermon in the ‘Path of Discipleship' series In this sermon, we hone in on one of the most important heart attitudes of discipleship: self-denial. This is one of the most radical ways in which the path of Jesus differs from the path of the world.
This is the first sermon in the ‘Path of Discipleship' series and will lay the groundwork for what is to follow. The idea is that Jesus doesn't call us simply to sign up for an idea, subscribe to a philosophy or join a club. Rather, he invites us to be disciples. The word ‘disciple' today may be unfamiliar to us apart from its use in church, but in the times of Jesus, it was commonplace. It simply means ‘learner' or ‘apprentice', and it was common for religious leaders and public figures to take on ‘disciples' who would be taught to walk in the ways of the master. This is the invitation that Jesus extends to us, and in the series, we will explore what this involves.

When you picture overflow, what comes to mind? Perhaps you think of coffee spilling over the edges of a mug, water flowing over a dam, or the space just outside a packed concert venue. God is a God of overflow. He desires for us to have a life overflowing with His character — too much hope to keep inside, peace spilling over the edges, love saturating everything in and around us.But in order to overflow, something must first be filled. We cannot fill ourselves up by working harder, serving more, or by being good enough. Overflow is the opposite of striving — it flows freely from within. God doesn't ask us to earn fullness. Jesus already earned it for us. So we can operate in God's joy as His ambassadors and children, pouring out to others as a result of an overflow instead of effort.

You gotta love it. You REALLY have to love the work. If you're going to work in restaurants, especially in the kitchen, and especially in The Hamptons, you really have to love what you're doing. Speaking with Damien O'Donnell, chef and partner of Bostwick's on the Harbor, you get no other sense than this kid loves the work. The way he describes the feeling of victory after a hard night "on the line", the sense of accomplishment of having made it through another night unscathed in one of the most difficult, demanding, unrewarding jobs around, is its own reward. Of course, the job does have its benefits, the action and the accomplishment aside, the people you meet, the teammates you get to bond with, and the feeling of pride of satisfying hundreds of hungry, demanding people in a night. But if you stick with it, one day you might just end up owning your own restaurant, or even two, or becoming partners with some of the best restaurateurs in their market. Who knows, you might even meet the woman of your dreams.

A Florida man stands accused of murdering a woman and then sending her a Facebook message weeks later wishing her a Happy Thanksgiving, purportedly to aid his mental health, as detailed in a probable cause arrest affidavit. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office received a tip on Friday from an informant alleging that 53-year-old Jeff Bostwick had killed Christina Uribe, who had been missing for three months. According to the informant, Bostwick confessed to killing Uribe with a shotgun and burying her behind his shed on his 5-acre property in Jay, Florida, near Pensacola. Another informant corroborated this account, adding that Bostwick had previously assaulted Uribe and fired a shotgun in her presence. Uribe's ex-boyfriend, who had dropped her off at Bostwick's home on Nov. 3, recounted a concerning encounter where Bostwick was seen holding a shotgun behind his back. Upon obtaining a search warrant for Bostwick's residence, deputies discovered firearms and ammunition, despite Bostwick being a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms. Additionally, some of Uribe's belongings were found on the premises. During an interview with investigators, Bostwick admitted someone dropped Uribe off at his home in late October or early November but claimed she “left one day and didn't know where she was,” the affidavit said. After detectives told him she had been “off the grid” and hadn't been seen or heard from since Nov. 3, he showed them a screenshot of a Facebook message he sent her on Nov. 23 wishing her a Happy Thanksgiving. “Jeff stated that Christina left some of her property in the residence and hasn't returned to get it,” the affidavit says. “Jeff showed me Facebook Messages he sent to Christina after 11/3/2023, including wishing her a Happy Thanksgiving around 11/23/2023.” When confronted with the fact that Uribe's body was on his property, he allegedly acknowledged to shooting her with a shotgun and then transporting the body with the trailer attached to the lawn mower. According to the affidavit, he buried the body after driving the lawn mower as far as he could. Bostwick stated that he and Uribe were in his shed when she took a revolver and pointed it at him. He claimed he grabbed his shotgun and shot her twice. When questioned about why he continued to message Uribe after her death, Bostwick reportedly claimed it was for his own mental well-being, expressing hope that she would respond and not be deceased. Subsequently, authorities arrested Bostwick on a murder charge, remanding him to the Santa Rosa County Jail without bond pending further legal proceedings. [06:15] Exploring the Impact of UV Light on Opioid Receptors - Alastair based his hypothesis on research papers he uncovered, particularly focusing on UV light's effects on opioid receptors in the brain. - He spoke to a doctor at Mass General who was conducting research on this topic, primarily with mice. The hypothesis suggested that UV light could affect opioid receptors in human brains. - Alastair took a proactive approach to test his hypothesis by exposing himself aggressively to UV light. Living in New York City, he deliberately spent two hours in the sun every day during the summer, in addition to using a tanning bed vigorously. The goal was to maximize exposure to UV light. - Alastair was strategic about the timing of UV exposure, going out between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., which is considered the highest UV index. He aimed to expose himself during the peak hours of UV intensity to enhance the effectiveness of the experiment. [08:30] Narcan's Swift Action and Alastair's UV Light Experiment - Narcan rapidly detaches substances that bind to opioid receptors in the brain. It acts quickly, causing not only a reversal of the respiratory effects but also inducing withdrawal symptoms if the person is not breathing. This mechanism serves as the basis for Alastair's experiment. - Alastair hypothesized that if there is a correlation between UV light and the opioid effect in the brain, Narcan, known to work on normal opioid usage, should have a similar effect in the presence of UV light. This led him to experiment by exposing himself to UV light and then taking Narcan, resulting in a full withdrawal experience. - According to him, the consistent results indicated that UV light does indeed affect opioid receptors in the brain. - Alastair's experience lends support to the notion that UV light has a significant and consistent impact on opioid receptors in the brain. [12:30] An Exploration of Light, Mood, and the Subtle Opioid Influence of UV Rays - Alastair decided to dig deeper into the connection between light exposure, particularly visible light, and mood disorders like SAD. - He discovered that, separate from the positive effects of visible light seen in SAD treatment, there's another aspect involving UV light, which is not visible to the human eye. - UV light, distinct from visible light, has effects on the body, including replenishing vitamin D levels and influencing opioid receptors. - Alastair explained that UV light, over time, subtly affects human opioid receptors, similar to substances like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and Vicodin. - While the response is not as strong, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to feelings of tiredness or reinvigoration, akin to experiencing a mild opioid stimulation. This sheds light on why people may enjoy spending a day at the beach or using tanning beds to achieve a subtle opioid effect. [19:20] Addressing Opioid Addiction and Tanning Bed Dualities - Alastair suggests that one approach to address opioid addiction is to ensure individuals receive enough sunlight and vitamin D throughout their lives. By maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D, the brain may be less likely to respond to prescription painkillers in an addictive manner, potentially preventing addiction from the outset. - Researchers are exploring an alternative approach for individuals already abusing or dependent on opioids. Instead of traditional methods like methadone clinics, where individuals are gradually tapered off opioids, there is evidence suggesting that ultraviolet (UV) light could serve as a substitute. - Alastair discusses the dual nature of tanning beds. While he initially doubted the concept of tanning bed addiction, he acknowledges that there is compelling evidence from esteemed researchers suggesting that tanning beds, with their potent UVA light, can be as addictive as synthetic opioids like Vicodin or Oxycodone. - However, he also highlights the potential use of tanning beds as a tool to help individuals transition off synthetic opioids. [23:45] Sunblock Controversies: Balancing Skin Cancer Prevention and Vitamin D Synthesis - The use of sunblock is a controversial subject, particularly in discussions involving dermatologists who often focus on skin cancer prevention. - Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially from the sun, is known to cause skin cancer. While some doctors recommend avoiding UV light and using vitamin D supplements, Alastair suggests a more relaxed approach, emphasizing the benefits of an active lifestyle and time spent outdoors. - Some doctors advocate for sunblock as a means to prevent skin cancer, while others, like Alastair, express concerns about its potential negative impact on vitamin D synthesis. - Alastair expresses skepticism about the marketing behind sunblocks, suggesting that it may not always be honest. [48:00] A Journey through Mood Changes and Tanning Bed Seeking Behavior - As the seasons changed, Alastair noticed a shift in his mood and described feeling a compulsion in the back of his mind. This compulsion led to what he referred to as "tanning bed seeking behavior." - He experienced a sense of low-level gloom and a compulsion to seek out tanning, akin to textbook drug-seeking behavior. - Alastair was mindful of the behavioral changes he observed in himself, characterized by a compulsion to seek out tanning beds. - He noted that the compulsion to seek out tanning eventually went away. While he initially felt the urge to address the low mood through tanning, with time, the compulsion subsided. AND MUCH MORE!
