When trials befall us, we're often tempted to question God's goodness or power, and because we want an end to our pain, we try to figure out why God has allowed particular trials into our lives. We reason that if we can just understand what God is doing, we can work towards a way out of our suffering. I am so excited to share with you guys my conversation today with Pastor Matt Howell, as we discuss some profound questions about suffering. Pastor Matt grew up in Dallas, TX and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2003. After graduation, he served as an intern with RUF at LSU for two years where he developed a heart for pastoral ministry and met and married his wife, Kathryn. After 11 years of being a campus minister with RUF, Matt now serves as a pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, in Memphis, Tennessee. While we can't know God's specific reasons for the trials that he allows into our lives, we do know that He has a big-picture purpose for the sufferings we endure. Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking! Is it possible to lead a congregation without being consumed by anxiety and stress? How can we as ministry leaders manage the pressures and expectations we carry while maintaining a sense of peace and lightness? In this episode, Alan Fadling, author of A Non-Anxious Life, unpacks how ministry leaders can navigate anxiety by creating a supportive network of friends and mentors, understanding God's joyful nature, and how these realities can transform our personal life and pastoral leadership.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Alan Fadling advises not bringing personal anxiety into a congregation but sharing it with friends, mentors, therapists, and spiritual directors. Alan Fadling highlights that his experience with managing anxiety has been supported by people outside his immediate church community. Referencing Lewis Smedes' Shame and Grace, Markus Watson illustrates how acceptance from others can help people feel less anxious and more acceptable. Discussing his book about anxiety with a church small group, Alan Fadling emphasizes the value of having outside perspectives to reassure one's concerns. Understanding God's joyful nature can lead to personal transformation and fuller acceptance of grace. Markus Watson relates a story about providing comfort rather than judgment, illustrating how fear and anxiety are addressed in a supportive manner. Categorizing anxiety as a sin is unhelpful, Fadling emphasizes, especially from a pastoral perspective. Referencing Eugene Peterson's interpretation from Philippians 4, Alan Fadling focuses on replacing anxiety with peace through prayer. We should recognize God's presence in anxious moments through prayer and reflection rather than avoid anxiety. Inspired by Dallas Willard, Fadling shares a personal practice of using scripture to find peace amidst anxiety. Psalms of Lament can help engage with and express anxiety while relying on God's support. Journaling with honesty, as practiced by Alan Fadling, serves as a personal dialogue with God and reinforces that God cares and one is not alone. Fadling's early ministry concerns included whether congregants liked him, stemming from personal insecurity. Discussing a "recognition deficit," Alan Fadling notes the mistake of seeking validation from congregations instead of from God.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Alan Fadling:Unhurriedliving.comUnhurried Living PodcastBooks mentioned:A Non-Anxious Life, by Alan FadlingThe Wounded Healer, by Henri NouwenShame and Grace, by Lewis SmedesEmotionally Healthy Spirituality, by Lewis SmedesRelated Episodes:The Healing Power of Pilgrimage, with Jon HuckinsSaudade, Leadership, and Nurturing the Inner Life, with Jeff CrosbyDid you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? Last year we released an episode of Doable Discipleship called The Burden & Gift of Living. Host Jason Wieland had read a book called On Getting Out of Bed by Alan Noble, and even though we were not able to interview him at the time, Jason needed to talk about this book. No book resonated with and spoke to Jason as deeply as On Getting out of Bed so Jason did his first solo episode of the podcast talking about the book. Well, the topic seemed to strike a chord as in the 6 months since its release, that episode has become one of the most engaged in the history of Doable Discipleship, and the numbers just continue to go up. On Getting Out of Bed is a look at the struggles of everyday living and the reality of mental affliction, to the point that some people constantly wrestle with the question of why to even get out of bed. The book is a beautiful essay on the reality of brokenness, the goodness of God, and the hope of healing. Well, today is a day Jason has eagerly awaited. In today's episode, Jason is joined by Dr. Alan Noble, author of On Getting Out of Bed. In this conversation, Alan and Jason talk about why the topic of life's burden speaks to so many people today, how generations approach mental affliction differently, whether or not to openly discuss your own mental afflictions, hope of healing, the role of those who care for those who struggle with mental afflictions, and so so much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. It premiered in 2017 and now offers more than 380 episodes. Episodes release every Tuesday on your favorite podcast app and on the Saddleback Church YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/saddleback). Bonjour! Stephanie here. How do we overcome anxiety, and embrace peace? More than ever, our daily life seems to fight us on this quest. Do you, like so many of us, see anxiety as an incentive to perform? Or a proof of how much you care? Or is anxiety simply an unwelcome shadow over your days, bringing with it clenched teeth and an upset stomach? Today is an invitation to step into a life characterized by peace, grace, and gentleness, replete with the palpable presence of God. God promises us that it is ours in Christ Jesus. The world does it best to make it impossible. So, which one will it be? Anxiety leads us to succumb to fear and fight peace. Anxious living is a distortion of good motives, blocking the clarity of stillness and rest. Peace is the antidote to anxiety. This peace is found in practicing God's presence and embodying the virtues of grace, found in Christ. But, what does it look like, and how do we get there? This week I welcome Alan Fadling back on the show to dive into a real and raw conversation about overcoming anxiety and finding peace. Alan has felt mastered by worry, but he brings counsel on how to learn a better way and who to look to for it: Jesus, "the ultimate non-anxious presence." He constructs a posture from which we can rest more deeply, live more fully, and lead better. Fixing our minds on grace and eternity, we can begin to see the benefit of loosening our grip and operating from a sure foundation. Alan candidly shares his personal journey, highlighting how anxiety, coupled with perfectionism, led to a cycle of high standards, achievements, and ultimately, dissatisfaction and discouragement. His honest portrayal of himself as a "recovering perfectionist" resonated deeply with me – and I suspect I am not the only one! Alan's emphasis on progress over perfection reminds us that growth is a journey, not a destination. This is a deeply biblical message that our culture has us forget all too easily. And so we find that grace, with its essence of unmerited favor and unconditional love found in Christ, becomes a transformative force, offering solace and redemption in the face of anxiety. This is one of the key messages of Scripture. Alan also shares with us the practice of embodying God's presence and cultivating "little virtues" such as humility, patience, gentleness, dependence, and surrender. He tells us about learning patience in the chaos of Southern California traffic, reminding us that it's the simple things that steer us towards a peaceful life, even when the world seems to have gone upside down. This underscores the significance of relinquishing the incessant pursuit of materialistic and ambitious goals in favor of humility and grace. Scripture makes clear the importance of faith, imagination, and embracing an "unhurried influence." Rattling through life at top speed isn't the secret to peace. Alan's prayer for the audience to grow in unhurried influence is an open invitation to take the scenic route, savouring the moments, and stepping into a life ruled by peace, grace, and gentleness. So, as you sail away from this episode, remember - peace isn't found in the rush-rush of everyday life, but in the sweet, steady rhythm of grace in Christ Jesus. You've probably heard this old rock & roll legend… that when Van Halen performed in concert, they used to ask for M&Ms in their dressing room but all the brown ones had to be removed. Why in the world would they want that? Listen as I reveal the amazingly practical reason. https://www.safetydimensions.com.au/van-halen/ A lot of people suffer from too much anxiety. But anxiety is not the problem according to Dr. John Delony. Rather than focus on reducing your anxiety, John's advice has more to do with handling whatever it is that is causing the anxiety in the first place. Much like when a smoke alarm goes off in your house, do you just try to figure out how to turn off the alarm or do you try to put out the fire? Listen and you will get a very different approach to dealing with anxiety in your life. Dr. John Delony is a mental health and wellness expert who hosts The John Delony Show podcast (https://www.ramseysolutions.com/shows/the-dr-john-delony-show) and he is author of the book Building a Non-Anxious Life. (https://amzn.to/4aabU1G). Do you believe in the paranormal? Many people not only believe but insist they have had actual experiences with ghosts, or psychic ability or telepathic powers – even alien encounters. While the proof for all of this is sketchy, many very intelligent people swear by their beliefs. Why? The "why" is what's so fascinating according to Chris French, Emeritus Professor and Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit in the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths, University of London and author of the book, The Science of Weird Sh**: Why Our Minds Conjure the Paranormal (https://amzn.to/3PdKnVd). Could the believers be on to something? Listen as we explore this. Do you hate to get out of bed in the morning? Is it just hard to pull off the covers and actually get up? There are some things you can do to make that experience a little less dreadful. Listen as I explain. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/tricks-waking-up-sleep_n_2718257#slide=2125100 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
