Listening to Masterclass this week, I found myself reflecting on where my journey of consistently creating content started. It was April 4th, 2020, not even 1 month into the world being flipped upside down. I was scrolling on LinkedIn and saw a video that Brian Cuban shared talking about the lessons his brother taught him from selling papers as a kid. Seeing that video drove me to connect with Brian, and led to us sending messages back/forth Then, I asked: “I had a question if you don't mind. I see you took one of your hardships in life and wrote a book. As I am in my first corporate job out of college selling hardware and software, what is the best piece of advice you have on career advancement, and how you know when you are doing the thing you were destined to do?” Brian offered to jump on a call with me to talk through these, so we jumped on a Zoom early on a Saturday morning, and Brian agreed to record. That conversation with Brian unlocked my passion for interviewing others, and sharing their career stories and lessons that others can learn from and implement in their own life I turned this first interview into “The Development Series,” which was the catalyst for The 20% Podcast and has led to 191 straight weeks of sharing weekly episodes doing just that. This one step in doing something uncomfortable opened so many doors for me, and all it took was sending a message. Thank you Brian, for taking an hour out of your day to talk with me, it really did change my life. Brian Cuban is this week's guest on The 20% Podcast. Brian Cuban is an attorney, best-selling author, and speaker. His story is one of triumph and recovery.Brian began battling body dysmorphia at a young age, a mental health disorder where an individual can't stop thinking about their perceived defects or flaws as it relates to their appearance. He struggled to feel comfortable in his own body, especially in a household where his mother often fat-shamed him. At 18-years-old, Brian began binging and purging. This eating disorder followed him into college, where he began a pattern of drinking alone. Not long after starting his freshman year, Brian developed anorexia. Brian decided to attend law school because he believed that it would allow him to continue a lifestyle he depended on. For another three years, he could continue to engage in behaviors that had become survival to him. After college, Brian moved to Dallas where he was introduced to cocaine. In his own words, Brian found the magic trick to instantly transform himself. Throughout the years, Brian received help and support from his brothers, and he started his journey of sobriety April 8, 2007 after 20 years of addiction. In today's episode, Luke and Brian talk about the impact of an emotionally abusive mother, how he felt like the best version of himself when he tried cocaine, and the defining moment when he decided to fully commit to sobriety.Check out our sponsors!Hennessey DigitalMilestone FoundationTrial School7 Figure CasesJoin our Better Together LinkedIn Group

**This month, May 2022, How I Lawyer is teaming up with the Personal Jurisdiction Podcast (https://www.personaljxpod.com/) to feature five interviews on the important topic of mental health in the legal profession. Learn more here.** In today's episode Personal Jurisdiction hosts Hallie Ritzu and Allison Freedman speak with University of Michigan Law Professors Bridgette Carr and Vivek Sankaran. Bridgette Carr is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Michigan Law School. She is also the founding director of the Law School's Human Trafficking Clinic, the first clinical law program solely devoted to addressing this issue comprehensively. Bridgette is also a first generation college graduate who wasn't sure law school was for her. She didn't so a journal or apply for a clerkship, and instead spent her spare time during law school working at a local legal aid office and an asylum shelter. Despite now being an expert on human trafficking, Bridgette hadn't heard of human trafficking work until after she graduated from law school. Vivek Sankaran is also a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He directs both the Child Advocacy Law Clinic and the Child Welfare Appellate Clinic, through which law students represent children and parents in trials and appellate proceedings. He is also a father of three boys, he loves coaching youth sports, and he is learning to play the guitar. Together they teach a course that they created called “Finding a Fulfilling Life in the Law” at the University of Michigan Law School. In it, they ask students to consider what they want out of life after law school and how they can create that life. The course applies innovative principles of problem solving to the concept of designing your life in and beyond law school. Bridgette and Vivek also recently launched an exciting new business—LawLifeProf Coaching—to help lawyers in practice build a toolbox for a fulfilling life. In their conversation they discuss why being curious, trying new things, and staying connected to people you care about can help you to design a fulfilling life in the law. There is no yellow brick road, there is no checklist - but Bridgette and Vivek share many pieces of advice and personal reflections for anyone who is not quite fulfilled in their career. A big fan of marketing, psychology, and sport, Eric combined all three and began reaching out to his contacts to discuss how they could attack the mental health epidemic strategically and differently than had ever been done before. He had to bring purpose to his own experience and believed he must have gone through that horrific period for a reason. With suicides at a 30-year high, and drug/opioid abuse out of control, he knows something major must change with the messaging if we're to reverse these negative trends. He was overwhelmed by the positive responses he received from athletes, celebrities, and practitioners all over the globe, wanting to join in, all of whom bought into his vision of bringing a louder voice to this cause through a Global Alliance under a singular, bold but inclusive brand message: #SameHere (mental health lives on a continuum and we are ALL impacted…we ALL have a story). The charter Celebrity Alliance launched with a formal rally with over 300 supporters in attendance on November 14th, 2017, in New York City. There, The Alliance introduced their “#SameHere” Movement, uniting the world through one ASL sign language hand gesture (you see depicted in their logos and profile pictures) that communicates – no matter where we live, or what our background or our accolades, we all go through life's inevitable challenges, and we should have a society where it is openly acceptable to talk about those challenges, thus: “#SameHere!” Video. Find out more about the origin story that led to The Alliance's usage of #SameHere.
