The California Republican Party Convention kicks off Friday in Anaheim with a luncheon featuring former president and current GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. While Trump is likely to get the lion's share of the attention, other prominent GOP candidates including Sen. Tim Scott, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy will also be on hand throughout the weekend.California boasts over 5 million registered Republicans - more than any state other than Florida - but that is half the number of registered Democrats. No Republican has held statewide office in over a decade, and Democrats hold supermajorities in both houses. The state hasn't supported a Republican for president since 1988. The convention comes at a time of deep stress within the state party, and the Dobbs decision and the events of January 6, 2021 have only exacerbated that stress. So, what to expect this weekend? We asked Mike Madrid, a longtime Republican strategist, former political director for the California Republican Party and acknowledged expert on Latino politics. After a lifetime as a GOP stalwart, he denounced the party's embrace of Trumpism in 2016, and later cofounded The Lincoln Project. His efforts got him disavowed by the California party that he had helped build.Madrid joined us to talk about the state of the state Republican Party and about where the Republican Party is nationally, and helped us figure out who had the Worst Week in CA Politics.Show Notes:1:16 The state of the CA GOP3:09 The party platform5:39 "The pro-choice wing [of the GOP] has lost"6:25 What to make of "secret" anti-Trump Republicans9:43 Putting Mike Madrid in context12:00 The Republican Voter's mindset14:20 The CAGOP: 80% white in a state that is 35% white15:42 But, Larry Elder19:12 Does the CAGOP change?23:48 "The Republican Party is a societal problem"25:00 Where is the Latino vote?31:18 What happens if Republicans get a prolonged drubbing at the polls?36:25 What will we see at the CAGOP Convention?40:45: WWCAWant to support the Capitol Weekly Podcast? Today, The Two Mikes spoke with remarkable gentlemen named Mike Netter Mr. Netter lives in Los Angeles and he and only a handful of people -- all political novices -- and a $1,000 war chest at the start, but joined together to form an organization called "Rebuild California" which conducted a grassroots campaign -- the largest volunteer-based recall campaign in U.S. history -- that garnered 2.1 million votes to force a recall election against Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom. Although Newsom won the recall election, he and his party were forced to spend $90 million to defeat the recall process engineered by Rebuild California. Mr. Getter said that the organization took advantage of the fact that California is by its constitution a "direct democracy” and citizens can organize to campaign for recalls, referendums, and initiatives. Twenty other states in the Union have the same constitutional opportunities. Mr. Netter also said that he and his partners in the recall campaign learned the following extremely valuable truths about grassroots campaigning. --Stay as far away from "political consultants" and their companies as possible, they are ineffective and horribly expensive. To make the point Mr. Netter pointed out that in California an individual can purchase from the state the voter data for its 22 million voters for $50. --Door-to-door campaigning and the use of email to contact voters is far less expensive and far more effective than using campaign information by mail. Sending two million political flyers by mail costs one million dollars, while sending one million campaign emails costs $10,000. (Rebuild California sent out 36 million emails in the recall campaign.) -- In California the key demographic was not Black, Asian, Hispanic, LBGTQ, etc. --as the media tells their viewers -- but the over-55 Californians who turned out at a 55-percent rate. Mr. Getter noted that there are six million Hispanic voters in California whose turn-out rate is $25%, and that other minorities more or less mirrored that low turn-out rate. The California Republican Party has elected not to endorse any of the candidates running to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election, prioritizing unity over a potentially divisive selection. Hours before party delegates were set to choose between four Republican candidates, a pair of party officials circulated a motion to scrap the process and instead issue no endorsement. They warned that selecting one candidate could make it less likely that voters recall Newsom because “the CAGOP tipping the scale may deter some voters.” That motion prevailed with party chair Jessica Millan Patterson in support. Last episode before the election. Lots to cover. Early voting numbers look great for President Trump all over the country. It will have to be a huge win so the Left doesn't try any funny business to flip a few states their way. Governor Moonbeam emerges to wonder why Trump supporters (like his own neighbor) are horrible people and why they won't just support a President Biden who will make everyone get along. CAGOP continues to crater and become irrelevant and if they have a poor showing in Orange County they will continue to become a meaningless political party in California. However, there is a grassroots movement of people fed up with California politics who show changing California is not impossible. Finish the show with a lightning round of Props and thoughts on each. Joe had his first town hall last night and it was...interesting to say the least. It seems you can set your watch to Biden's mental decline. About Amy Phan West for the 47th Congressional District in California: Amy Phan West escaped the invading Communist Regime at the end of the Vietnam War, with her parents and siblings, stowed away in the bowels of a Vietnamese Fishing Boat, in 1985. Half her family had been murdered by the communists and they barely escaped the same fate. During their escape, they witnessed the atrocities and horrors committed by the communists and were almost caught, which, if it had happened, would have led to certain death. In the boat, they were at sea for 3 days, having already run out of fresh drinking water and the future looking bleak with death by starvation a real possibility, when a German Oil Tanker found them adrift and rendered assistance. They were taken to Thailand, where they stayed at a refugee camp for more than a year and a half. Then, they went to the Philippines, where the entire Phan family sought asylum in the United States. After six months in the Philippines, they were granted asylum by the United States State Department. In 1987, the Phan family landed in Huntington Beach, California, to begin the next chapter of their lives, “The American Dream”. The Phans worked hard to provide for their family in America. They embraced the country that had given them the freedom and opportunities that were not available to them in their native land. More than anything, they were happy to be alive and not be persecuted. Even then, they might not have made it, had it not been for the generous support offered by local Vietnamese Church Organizations in Southern California. The Phans embraced Christianity, just like they embraced America. Amy, like her brothers and sisters, graduated High School. Amy went on to Orange County Community College, where she received her associate’s degree in Business, and then went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies at California State Long Beach. Amy Phan West is a proud American, wife and mother of three boys, Small Business Owner, Commissioner of Personnel Board, Commissioner of OC Parks and a delegate for the CAGOP. She is an advocate for family and religious Freedom. She is a proud Conservative and a strong supporter of President Trump. She supports our right to bear arms and defend ourselves, a belief that she holds with strong conviction due to her experience witnessing first hand what happens when a tyrannical government disarms its citizens. She is pro-life and respects the need to protect our babies. Amy wants to return California to its former glory, having witnessed the periodic degradation of the state at the hands of the democrats. She has wants to greatly improve the educational system in California since education is the greatest gift we can give to our children. She wants to end the homelessness that is a blight on California and tackle illegal immigration, which has been draining the economy of California. She is greatly concerned with the increase in intensity and devastation caused by the yearly forest fires in California and make it a priority to prevent this from becoming a yearly issue. Please support her race as an #AmericaFirst candidate to take back the House of Representatives CA-47th district. Amy married Jeremy West in 2009 and together they have three young sons, ages 7,5, and 3. They are the co-proprietors of an Independent Rental Car Consortium. As a family, they enjoy many adventurous sporting activities, including camping, BMX, snowboarding and other seasonal extreme sports. Republican consultant and former California state director for Ted Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign talks about how progressives and conservatives can get along, Swalwell's unknown gambit for running for president, and the state of the California GOP.
In this episode the main topic is how the CAGOP caves to the establishment and votes for a swamp creature in Jessica Patterson and how this spells doom and gloom for the future of conservative politics in California. Bernie Sanders enters the race for President, but several videos of him going full pinko commy surface and show how the thought of pushing back on communism makes him physically sick. The Ballad of Jussie Smollet comes to an interesting close as the Chicago PD figure out that he staged the whole thing. The Looney Left is caught flat footed and abandon their support of him. Plus I play with audio clips for the first time.
On this episode I discuss how Governor Newsom's fiscal conservatism is merely for political gain and not for the benefit of Californians. In national news, there is the issue of President Trump's national emergency on the border wall and how RINO's and puritanical conservatives cry foul whenever he doesn't live up to their expectation. Then I touch upon the Green Pipe Dream (aka the Green New Deal) and how the Looney Left keeps marching down the road of socialism. In state news, I discuss the race for CAGOP Chairman and how Jessica Paterson is a swamp creature hoping to keep the CAGOP a party of losers. Then I dive into the rampant homelessness in California and how in the end, California and it's spending on social welfare has become just like the High Speed Rail, a train to nowhere. In the wake of declining registration numbers and a devastating election in November, California Republicans are searching for a path back to relevance in the Golden State. Many Latino Republicans have voiced strong opposition to the GOP's current direction, decrying the Nationalist-leaning "Trump Wing" of the Party that has embraced loaded racial rhetoric and calls for a wall between California and Mexico. Latino GOP consultants Luis Alvarado and Mike Madrid sat down with the Capitol Weekly Podcast to discuss the state of the California Republican Party from their different vantage points: Madrid sees a Party in deep decline, having abandoned Conservative ideals in favor of white identity politics; Alvarado offers a glass-half-full view, defending the campaign of failed Gubernatorial candidate John Cox and looking for the bread and butter issues that will drive voters back to the GOP. Sparks fly as Alvarado and Madrid hash out their ideas about saving the Party that each has devoted his professional life to.
