Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. This news comes just days before the release of a hotly anticipated book that promises to reveal information about the former president's alleged cognitive decline and the lengths that White House staffers and others in his inner circle went to conceal it. Also, President Donald Trump has a diplomatic double-header today with calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his latest attempt to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine. National politics correspondent and Playbook contributing author Adam Wren joins Playbook managing editor Jack Blanchard to break it all down. Plus, House Republicans voted the Big Beautiful Bill out of the Budget Committee last night, increasing the likelihood of a floor vote before Memorial Day.

It's Monday, May 19th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Catholic man brutally beaten to death On May 12th, Muslims in Pakistan, including a former police officer, tortured a Catholic laborer to death over an accusation he had stolen a cell phone, reports Morning Star News. Riyasat Masih from the Punjab Province, said that his 35-year-old brother, Kashif Masih, worked on the agricultural property of former police inspector Malik Irfan for the last three years. Before the Catholic man succumbed to his injuries, he revealed that the former police inspector ordered his seven accomplices to beat him till he confessed. Tragically, they tortured him with wooden clubs and iron bars, hitting him indiscriminately all over his body. Most brutally, they even hammered several steel nails into his legs. Riyasat, a surviving brother, said, “I cannot express the pain when I saw my younger brother's body. The bruise marks showed the brutality he had suffered at the hands of his influential employer and his goons.” Please pray that justice would be done and these Pakistani Muslims are held accountable. Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder.” Mexican sailing ship crashed into Brooklyn Bridge Mexican sailors were seen dangling from a navy ship's main mast moments after the ship smashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, reports The Daily Mail. The sailors had been standing atop the Cuauhtémoc's 150-foot masts in the lead up to the ship striking the iconic structure on Saturday as part of a traditional greeting.  The massive Navy vessel, reportedly carrying nearly 300 passengers, hit the New York City bridge, triggering a colossal rescue response and leaving two dead and dozens more severely injured.   In multiple eyewitness videos, the towering masts are seen snapping and partially collapsing as they crash into the bridge's deck. Sailors perched high above are thrown into chaos, with some seen clinging to the shattered beams high up in the air. It was not clear how the ship's captain had not realized that the 150-foot height of the ship was taller than the bridge's deck which was 127 feet above the water. Urge your Congressman to vote to defund Planned Parenthood In its 2023-2024 annual report, Planned Parenthood revealed that it killed more U.S. babies than ever before, taking the lives of 402,230 boys and girls in the womb.  Even the New York Times and NPR are now acknowledging that Planned Parenthood is harmful and abusing taxpayer dollars. A grisly New York Times story from February 2025 features atrocious conditions at Planned Parenthood like botched abortions and leaking sewage. Shockingly, 5 women have died because of Planned Parenthood when they sought abortions.  Worse yet, American taxpayers were forced to fund $792 MILLION of this murderous mayhem – an increase of $100 million from the year before. With a GOP trifecta in Washington, it's time American taxpayers defunded Big Abortion! Thankfully, President Trump is committed to ending taxpayer-funded abortion.  It is the president's hope that his “big, beautiful bill” being debated in the House reconciliation process will defund Planned Parenthood. The challenge is that pro-lifers need every House Republican to pass the bill. After the bill failed to get out of the Budget Committee on Friday morning, May 16th in a 16-21 vote because some Republicans, like Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, didn't think it cut enough money from other sectors of the budget, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise claimed that the House WILL defund Planned Parenthood in a bill that would (a) get out of the Budget Committee and (b) pass the House in a floor vote this week, reports LifeNews.com. Call your Representative at 202-224-3121 and urge him or her to defund Planned Parenthood.  That's 202-224-3121. You can make that call any time of the day or night.  Please email me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to let me know you made this important call. Proverbs 24:11 says, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter" Colorado transgender law tramples parental rights And finally, for weeks, the Colorado legislature has been debating whether or not to pass HB25-1312, the so-called “Protections for Transgender Individuals” act.  The state is especially hostile to a parent who is guilty of so-called “deadnaming” or “misgendering” their child. “Deadnaming” is calling a person, pretending to be the opposite sex, by their given birth name. And “misgendering” is when someone refers to the transgender person with pronouns which reflect their actual biological sex instead of the one they are pretending to be. This law, which sadly received majority votes in the Colorado House and Senate in early May, was just signed into law on Friday, May 16th by Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis, a homosexual who is in a faux marriage with his so-called husband.  Now, the courts have been empowered to literally remove children from their parents who do not affirm their child's gender confusion, especially in child custody cases. To his credit, Republican Colorado State Representative Jarvis Caldwell offered an amendment to HR 25-1312 that said public schools had to have parental consent to allow a student to change his or her name in school. Sadly, it was defeated.  Listen to his passionate plea on May 6th. CALDWELL: “I ran an amendment that said you have to have parental consent to change your name in school if you are a child, and that amendment was defeated. Now let me be clear to the members in here. “In my family, names have a meaning. There's a tradition there. I named my children. Who are any of you to tell me that my child can go to school and change their name without my even knowledge? Who are any of you to say that? “I gave them their names. I was there when they were born. I was there when they said their first words and took their first steps. I was there on their first day of school. I will be there on their last day of school. I will be there when they have children of their own, and they name their children. And God willing, my children will be by my side as I lay on my deathbed and take my last breaths on this Earth. Not a single person in this room will be. “Stop putting yourselves, the government, between us parents and our children. We are sick and tired of it. It's not about hating trans people. It's about putting yourselves in between us and our kids. That's why we have fought this bill. “We received thousands of emails, thousands of phone calls, not because thousands of people around Colorado hate trans people. It's because they're sick of the bills we're passing infringing on their rights. This perhaps may be the most egregious we've seen so far. That's why we feel this way. It is not about hate. It is about love, the love I have for my kids.” May the Lord raise up more Jarvis Caldwells, true Christian statesmen, to represent Biblical values in our legislatures. The Big Beautiful Bill is finally past the quiet phase. The behind-the-scenes negotiations have spilled into the open, and now we're in the bloodletting. Speaker Mike Johnson wants this out of the House by Memorial Day, which means committee votes need to happen, and fast. But right now, the Budget Committee is a problem. Hardliners are balking — Ralph Norman, Josh Brecheen, and Chip Roy are all leaning no. They're not satisfied with the Congressional Budget Office's timeline for a cost estimate, and they're worried the Medicaid changes could pressure red states into expanding coverage.Mike Lawler and Marjorie Taylor Greene are fighting on Twitter over SALT deductions — state and local tax breaks — and that fight is not going away. There's talk of raising the cap from $30,000 to $40,000 or adjusting the phase-out thresholds. But this is exactly why they're doing one big bill instead of multiple smaller ones. Everyone knew it was going to be painful. Nobody wanted to go through this kind of battle again and again for every policy item.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Still, I'm bullish. It's ugly right now, but that doesn't mean it's doomed. The usual sign of failure — a flood of press conferences from members declaring the bill dead — hasn't happened. Republicans aren't holding cameras. They're texting reporters. They're venting in group chats. But they're not going on record saying they'll tank Trump's agenda. That's a big difference. This isn't like other bills I've seen die. It still feels like something they're going to get through — just barely. The key players are all doing what they need to do. Trump is overseas for now, but his influence is still real. He got Johnson the speaker's gavel. He's kept this whole thing moving. When he's back, the pressure campaign ramps up. Meanwhile, JD Vance is already starting his Senate charm offensive to get reconciliation done once it clears the House. They know they'll lose a few senators, but they're planning for that. The goal is to get something — anything — through. And here's what's actually in it: no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax on Social Security for anyone making under $150,000. Yes, those provisions sunset in four years, but let's be honest — once they go into effect, they're not going anywhere. Nobody's going to vote to take those benefits away from working people. Republicans used to hate that logic — the “give a mouse a cookie” approach to entitlements — but now they're writing the cookies themselves. And they're going to love running on them. This bill is messy. It's jammed with contradictions. It's being held together with string and prayers. But I still think it passes. And if it does, the Trump administration gets to claim a huge legislative win — not just a headline, but real, sticky policy that people will feel in their paychecks. That's the ballgame.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:52 - Big Beautiful Bill Progress00:15:51 - Interview with Bill Scher00:39:39 - Update00:40:23 - Inflation00:43:36 - Supreme Court Birthright Citizenship00:45:44 - Iran Nuclear Deal, "Sort Of"00:47:57 - The News Sheriff00:53:03 - Interview with Bill Scher (con't)01:18:02 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. New Year, New Legislature

The 60th Oklahoma Legislature has officially convened, bill writing is underway, and session will be starting in just a few weeks. Let's get caught up on where things stand as we enter the next few months. Transcript: Hello and welcome to Let's Pod This, my name is Andy Moore and we have a jam-packed episode for you today. At the end I will highlight some important upcoming events, so while you're listening, be sure to grab a pen and paper to write those down. But first, let's begin with our legislative update: Tuesday was Organizational Day for the Oklahoma legislature, which is the day when the members come together to formally elect the leaders of each caucus and each chamber, vote on the rules the bodies will use to operate for the next year, and, I think, to take new headshots. I've seen a lot of folks post them online, at least. More on this later. I'm honestly not clear on when the Legislative session *officially* begins. Organizational Day seems like the official start, but some people say that the legislature isn't REALLY in session until the first Monday in February; this year that falls on February 3rd. That's the day the Governor gives his State of the State address and when the Legislature formally gavels into session. Ah, wait…I think that's it - I think Organizational Day is the first day of the Legislature - this year begins the 60th Oklahoma Legislature, and remember that each Legislature is a two-year cohort or lineup - and each Legislature will have multiple sessions. There are at least two “regular” sessions, one each year, and the first regular session of the 60th legislature begins on February 3rd. And then there maybe some “extraordinary” or special sessions sprinkled in along the way. Anyway, on Organizational Day, The Senate published its schedule for chamber deadlines, and it is unusually detailed, particularly when it comes to bill filing. There are seven deadline dates in January, one for Organizational Day and the other six relate to bill filing and stipulate things as specific as “Final draft revisions due to drafters by Senators” by 4pm on January 15th. And then the schedule only lists six more deadlines for the entire duration of session, February to May. As of today, the House has not published their entire deadline schedule but they have published their Committee Schedule. At first I was surprised to see that the Appropriations & Budget Committee is scheduled to meet every day - the schedule has them listed on Monday mornings at 9am AND 10:30am, as well as Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, AND Wednesday afternoon, all at 4:30pm, and then one more time on Thursdays at 1:30pm. BUT then I saw a footnote that says “The A&B Committee develops its own meeting schedule and that of the Subcommittees,” so we'll just wait and see what they do. It would be unusual for the A&B committee to meet so early on a Monday morning, as many rural legislators go home to their districts on the weekends and don't drive into the city until Monday. I'm not opposed to Monday morning meetings, though - I love to see legislators at the Capitol working on things. Plus, more meetings means, at least in theory, that there will be more time for thoughtful discussion about important issues…or it could just mean more time for inane shenanigans that distract the legislature (and the public!) away from important issues. Speaking of distraction, the Bill filing deadline is next Thursday, January 16th, and that means that over the next few weeks you will hear about many, many bad and ridiculous bills. And a few good ones, too, God willing, but, undoubtedly, the small cabal of legislators...

Worldwide, the indices for democracy, human rights and security are under pressure. Upholding democratic values seems more urgent than ever. But ‘promoting democracy' in developing countries has been stained by associations with wars or neocolonial globalization. Moreover, what legitimacy do Western countries have, promoting values that are eroding within its own borders? Can we learn from democracy promotion methodologies in FCAS to strengthen democracy at home?  Thijs Berman is Executive Director at the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), so he struggles with these challenges every day. Their recent tracer study on democracy education offers an interesting entry point to discuss both the bigger questions, as well as the concrete practice of democracy promotion. He discusses this with our KPSRL's very own Head of Secretariat Sever Džigurski, who can also share some of his personal experiences in promoting democratic values and peace in the Balkans. Thijs Berman has been Executive Director of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) since January 2019. Before he became a trial lawyer, Colorado lawyer Kurt Zaner wanted to be an actor. But rather than just play a role, Kurt decided that he wanted to be a real-world champion and decided to become a trial lawyer. Now, Kurt applies lessons about presence, storytelling and drama from the stage to help achieve landmark verdicts for his clients. Join Ben for his wide-ranging discussion with Kurt that covers how a trial lawyer can use acting skills to enhance courtroom impact; strategies that have enabled Kurt to achieve several eight-figure verdicts against considerable odds; and even what modern day lawyers can learn from reading Cicero. About Kurt Zanerhttps://zanerhardenlaw.com/ Kurt Zaner has dedicated his legal career to representing folks against the modern-day Goliaths. In battling corporations that refuse to take responsibility, Kurt enjoys the challenge of standing up for people that seemingly have the odds overwhelmingly stacked against them.A sought-after national speaker, Kurt frequently lectures on his winning trial techniques, effective legal writing strategies, and iconic discovery tactics that force top-value settlements.  Kurt has secured the largest premises liability verdict in the history of Colorado ($16,000,000.00).He has appeared on Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and every local media outlet including the Denver Post and local CBS, ABC, and Fox affiliates.  He is a published author of Federal and State case law, including Colorado law establishing the right to punitive damages for victims of drunk drivers; he also authored legal articles on distracted driving as well as articles on ancient Roman trial methods. As a trained stage actor, Kurt credits much of his trial success to his theatrical training in college and in Los Angeles prior to law school. After graduating law school near the top of his class and receiving the American Bar Association's and American Law Institute's Best Graduate Award – awarded to the one student of the graduating class who best represents a combination of scholarship and leadership – Kurt went on to clerk for United States District Judge Ken Marra.Working side by side with a Federal Judge on one of the largest caseloads in the country, Kurt learned the art of persuasive advocacy both through legal writing and courtroom theatrics. Most importantly, he learned how cases are won from behind the bench.Prior to co-founding Zaner Harden Law, LLP, Kurt practiced with some of the best-known trial lawyers in the country.  Kurt has successfully represented hundreds of clients across the State of Colorado, trying and winning cases at every level of Colorado State Court, including several million and multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements. In 2017 he and his partner were recognized as having two of the largest verdicts of the year across all practice areas, including a 1,700,000.00 verdict against an oil company's distracted driver as well as a $2,500,000 verdict against a drunk driver that killed his client's son and then fled the scene. This drunk driving verdict landed on the front page of the Denver Post as the community was fed up with these kinds of reckless drivers avoiding accountability by running away.Kurt defended this verdict all the way to the Colorado Supreme Court. In 2018, Kurt secured the largest premises liability verdict in the history of Colorado – $16,000,000.00 in Boulder for a father of three who was diagnosed with the crippling neurological condition CRPS after a temporary electrical box exploded.A few years later, Kurt secured a verdict on another electrocution case where his client also developed CRPS, with a Denver jury delivering a $10,600,000.00 verdict (with interest).  A year after that, Kurt secured a $4,300,000.00 verdict for a client hurt in a trucking crash. No matter how big or small the case, Kurt takes great pride in helping those that entrust their most significant legal problems to his law firm.Kurt is very active in the Trial Lawyer community, both locally and nationally. Locally, he was recently elected to the Board of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA) for his fifth consecutive year and serves on several committees.Nationally, after serving as President of the New Lawyers Division for the American Association of Justice (the 5,000 member NLD division of the most pre-eminent national trial lawyer organization in the Country), Kurt now serves on the Budget Committee of the entire 20,000-member organization as well as the Board of Governors. He also acts as a certified End Distracted Driving (EndDD Program) presenter, donating his time in high school classrooms in Colorado educating the next generation of drivers on the dangers of distracted driving.Kurt is invited to speak across the country on novel legal strategies and methods that he has developed – techniques that have resulted in unprecedented successful results for his clients. He has been a regular speaker for the American Association of Justice, having spoken in Boston, Palm Springs, Denver, Los Angeles, and Montreal on a variety of topics including trial techniques, writing strategies, and insurance bad faith. He also speaks regularly for Trial Lawyers University (formerly Trojan Horse) as well as The National Trial Lawyers' national trial seminars. On the State level, Mr. Zaner regularly teaches for the Colorado Trial Lawyers at their state convention, statewide CLEs, and for CTLA's new lawyer bootcamps,He has also spoken at several State Seminars around the Country, including the prestigious Arkansas Trial Lawyers College on one of his favorite topics: transplanting 2,000-year-old trial techniques from the Roman trial lawyer Cicero and demonstrating how they can be effective in today's trials. When not practicing law, Mr. Zaner spends much of his time with his wife and two young boys, outdoors in the mountains or on the stage in a local theater production.Licensed in Florida and Colorado. PublicationsWarembourg v. Salem is far from the only Oregon city to be struggling with balancing its budget amid rising costs and declining revenues. Leaders cite property tax limits, the end of pandemic aid money and inflation rates, among other factors. But as a capital city, it’s one that gets more attention than others. Earlier this year, Salem city residents reacted overwhelmingly negatively to big proposed cuts to the library to attempt to address the shortfall.   Those cuts were restored as a result - for now. The city’s standing Budget Committee will present its recommendations to the city council during its meeting Monday evening, where time for public comment will be provided as well. We hear more details from Irvin Brown, the chair of that committee, which includes the mayor and all the members of the volunteer city council, as well as nine appointed community members. Brown has been serving as a community member, but in May he won a seat on the city council and will take that office in January.
