The word "unprecedented" is often used to describe Donald Trump's presidency. He's broken with convention repeatedly: from announcing tariffs on allies, to the suggestion that he wants to buy Greenland. But are these moves really without precedent? Or do Trump's politics echo that of 19th century US presidents, but with a more alarming twist? This podcast was brought to you thanks to the support of readers of The Times and The Sunday Times. In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd stumbled upon a remarkable discovery in the Judaean Desert – the first of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Over the next decade, this chance finding would lead to the unearthing of thousands of manuscript fragments from 11 caves near the ancient site of Qumran, dating back two millennia. These fragile parchments, include the oldest known copies of the Hebrew Bible and an extraordinary library of previously unknown religious writings. These scrolls are now being exhibited at The Ronald Reagan Library. Ed Stetzer will talk with Biola's Dominick Hernandez and The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation's Melissa Giller about the scrolls and how they offer unprecedented insights into the spiritual and cultural landscape of the Second Temple period on Ed Stetzer Live. It seems a favorite pastime of leaders in Washington is telling us — Americans — what we believe and what we want. Such assertions by politicians are sometimes true, but they inevitably reflect the policy the politician is attempting to promulgate. So what do Americans actually believe when it comes to key defense and foreign policy issues? We don't have to guess, thanks to the Reagan National Defense Survey. The Washington Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, Roger Zakheim, joins guest host Bradley Bowman to share the latest survey's findings.

Trulio also discusses the Reagan Library's role in preserving and promoting Reagan's principles and legacy, including upcoming exhibitions on the Dead Sea Scrolls. They chat about how the administrations of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher used innovations in public diplomacy to build back support for their foreign policy agendas at a moment of widespread popular dissent. They also discuss how ow competition between the governments of Reagan and Thatcher, the Anglo-American antinuclear movement, and the Soviet peace offensive sparked a revolution in public diplomacy.Get the book here: https://www.umasspress.com/9781625347107/a-voice-in-their-own-destiny/
President Reagan strongly believed in the importance of educating our youth about the Founding Fathers and the nation's foundational documents, such as the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. In 1981, he eloquently articulated this conviction by referring to these documents as the "Charters of Freedom," underscoring their role as the bedrock of American law and guardians of inalienable rights and privileges. It is for these reasons that the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute recently worked with Foundation Forward to install a permanent Charters of Freedom Monument on the Reagan Library campus. The monument includes life-sized replicas of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence, as well as a panel on Civil Rights. This monument was dedicated and unveiled during a ceremony on the Reagan Library campus on the 4th of July.
On this episode of Reaganism, Reagan Institute Director Roger Zakheim sits down with Joe Lonsdale who is a Managing Partner at 8VC and also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. They discuss the fallout from the first presidential debate of 2024, the future of conservatism and the Republican Party, and his optimistic view of America's future.
The numbers are in, and it's clear that Americans of all political stripes – Democrats, independents, and both MAGA and non-MAGA Republicans – want America to be engaged and leading on the world stage. The Reagan Institute's new summer survey shows that the vast majority of Americans want a strong military; support defending NATO allies; and continue to support Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel. But hidden in the crosstabs is an important finding: The myth of MAGA isolationism and Republican support for Russia is just that, a myth. Self-identified “MAGA Republicans” were more internationalist than “non-MAGA Republicans” on every issue and the number of Democrats and Republicans who want Russia to win over Ukraine is a statistical tie.Roger Zakheim serves as the Washington Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. He previously practiced law at Covington & Burling LLP where he led the firm's Public Policy and Government Affairs practice group. Before joining Covington he was General Counsel and Deputy Staff Director of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee where he managed the passage of the annual National Defense Authorization Act. He was also the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense.Read the transcript here. Find the Reagan Institute's summer survey here.

For today's Reagan Forum podcast, we are going behind the scenes to share some of the inside stories of what we do here at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. The Reagan Library opened on November 4, 1991, but the groundbreaking was held three years earlier, in November 1988. November 21, 2023, marked the 35th anniversary of the groundbreaking of the Reagan Library and Museum. To commemorate the day, the Foundation put together a video of how the Library was built and why Simi Valley was chosen.
In this episode of Wine Talks, we delve into the noble tradition of wine in the corridors of the White House. With the aid of Frederick J. Ryan, whose impressive tome "Wine in the White House: A History" serves as our guide, we explore the nuanced role of wine in American presidential history. Here are 7 points I pulled out of the conversation.

At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, our education programs are dedicated to cultivating the next generation of citizen leaders. Each year, we work with thousands of teachers and tens of thousands of students from across the country to help foster the engaged, informed citizens that President Reagan knew were so vital to a healthy America. In keeping with our vision of promoting civic engagement, on February 26, 2024 we were honored to once again partner with the Simi Valley Youth Council to present the annual Youth Town Hall. At the Youth Town Hall, Ventura County middle and high school students have the opportunity to hear public officials discuss local and statewide civic matters ranging from education to policy-making. To maximize participation, student attendees can pose their questions in person or share their concerns anonymously via social media.

With the incessant politicization of real foreign policy issues, sometimes it is helpful to go back to the numbers. And in this case, the numbers are detached from the reality that anti-Ukraine Republicans are trying to sell. In fact, a new summer survey from the Reagan Institute finds that a 76% supermajority of Americans, including 71% of Republicans, agree that it is important to the US that Ukraine wins the war. This is not the “Ukraine fatigue” story we have been told. Moreover, support for aid increases substantially when respondents are given more information – where aid to Ukraine is going, how Ukraine has performed on the field. Knowing this, why are our leaders failing to give the America First case for aid to Ukraine?Roger Zakheim serves as the Washington Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. What You Need to Know is balloons in our hemisphere. As the Chinese weather balloon (read: spy balloon) passes over America, it's a great time to recall the Monroe Doctrine and our nation's long-standing policies on anti-American systems encroaching on our part of the world. It's a very serious business, and America's leaders have to take any incursion seriously. We already know China doesn't respect our space both digitally and otherwise. This is a whole new level, and time for us to take a serious look at our response. Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote, gives an update about what they're doing across the nation. President Reagan once said, “We of today must choose how we will respond to the Holocaust. Let us tell the world that we will struggle against the darker side of human nature; that with God's help, goodness will prevail and those who lost their lives will not be forgotten.” Here, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, we're working to ensure that their lives won't be forgotten. Just one month ago we held an event to announce our upcoming exhibition, Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away. During this program we heard the moving testimony of two Auschwitz survivors, as well as received the first artifact that is a part of this extraordinary exhibition – a German WWII Train Car – the type used during the Holocaust to transport goods – and people – to Auschwitz. This very touching program began with the arrival of that train car – which was led by a procession of combat veterans on motorcycles.

RISE 2018 took place on April 12, 2018 in Washington, D.C. There were over a dozen panels in the day-long session focusing on the state of education, reducing recidivism through postsecondary education opportunities, the need for broadband access throughout schools and more. The closing panel was entitled An Educated Citizenry and it was a discussion between US Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett, as moderated by Dr. Akhil Reed Amar, a professor of law and political science at Yale University. During the hour long panel, the justices discussed everything from the importance of engaged citizenry and getting involved, to dealing with dissenting opinions, to the importance of just breaking bread with your fellow colleagues or classmates to connect on a more one-on-one level.

Hilton Foundation. In this week's Reagan Forum Podcast we bring you that national championship debate.

If you were alive in the late '90s, chances are there was an entire chapter of your life that was soundtracked by Eve 6's “Inside Out” — you know, that insanely catchy, angst-filled “heart in a blender” song that, starting in 1998, was ubiquitous on the radio and during Saturday trips to the mall. Nearly 25 years later, the Southern California alt-rock giants are back in the zeitgeist, though for decidedly un-nostalgic reasons: The band's Twitter went viral in late 2020 (possibly the only good thing to happen that year) when, seemingly out of nowhere, singer and guitarist Max Collins began using it to serve up unfiltered, hilarious cultural and political commentary.Subsequent offerings have ranged from cold-tweeting politicians to ask them if they “like the heart in a blender song,” to razzing other late-'90s rock stars (looking at you, Stephan Jenkins and Steve Albini), to thoughtful commentary on fair pay for musicians and roasting the centrist Dems. It's been an unlikely hit, and in addition to releasing new music with Eve 6, Max now pens an advice column with Input Mag and has become something of a rock n roll, post-Bernie public intellectual. We've been wanting to interview Max for a long time, but recently found the perfect excuse: Emilie and Max both wrote an article about John Hinckley Jr., the sexagenarian singer-songwriter who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s in a bid to impress the actor Jodie Foster. He wounded four people, including the President, and was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity. On July 15, Hinckley finally became a free man after over four decades of restrictions and court-mandated psychiatric care. Max, who is a big fan of Hinckley's music, got him on the phone for his first interview after his unconditional release. Around the same time, Emilie got commissioned to write an essay about the cult fandom around Hinckley and his stripped-down, romantic folk songs, which have garnered him nearly 30,000 subscribers on YouTube. She wanted to examine the fascination with Hinckley's music in the context of the complicated legacy of “outsider music,” a term popularized by WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid in the early 2000s to describe self-taught musicians with unusual backstories (and sometimes psychological disabilities) creating outside the bounds of the traditional music industry. Think: Daniel Johnston, The Shaggs, and Wesley Willis. It's basically the music equivalent of the (similarly othering) category of outsider art.But then a planned series of tour dates Hinckley booked this summer sparked a bunch of controversy online — especially after The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute issued a statement condemning his return to the stage. After the shows got canceled, the piece evolved into an exploration of how the long-running Brooklyn DIY venue Market Hotel, one of the stops on Hinckley's so-called “Redemption Tour,” became a target for the conservative media outrage machine, exemplifying the Right's increasing embrace of the very same cancel-culture tactics it loves to accuse the left of using. What does the controversy around Hinckley's foray into live music tell us about the state of the discourse? Is there such a thing as forgiveness, and redemption, in the middle of a culture war? And how in the world did Eve 6, a band we all grew up watching on MTV, end up reentering the chat as one of the funniest and most influential voices on left-wing Twitter? Much like in his column, Max is a generous and thoughtful conversationalist and was kind enough to indulge our extremely long list of questions. Along the way, he also got deep about some of his own experiences with mental health, including navigating a form of OCD, and why perhaps the appeal of so-called “outsider music” is that we all feel like outsiders in a way sometimes. GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming received a warm welcome while speaking as part of the "A Time for Choosing" speakers series held by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. After praising Cassidy Hutchinson, Cheney trotted out what sounded like a 2024 campaign line. "And I want to speak to every young girl watching tonight: the power is yours and so is the responsibility. In our great nation, one individual can make all the difference and each individual must try. Forty years ago this week, U.S. President Ronald Reagan spoke to the British Parliament in Westminster. The speech is an iconic encapsulation of Reagan's view of the Cold War conflict between Western democracies and the totalitarian states of the Warsaw Pact. In addition to its powerful rhetorical impact, this speech motivated policy change: Less than a year after the speech was delivered, the U.S. Congress approved the formation of the National Endowment for Democracy to aid democracy movements abroad. In this week's episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Clements Center Executive Director (and TNSR Editor in Chief) Will Inboden sits down with Rachel Hoff, policy director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, to discuss the speech and its legacy.
Tony Pennay, Chief Learning Officer of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, joined WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Tuesday to discussed an online learning school about the communication and leadership of President Ronald Reagan. Website: www.ReaganAcademy.com ABOUT REAGAN ACADEMY: In response to the learning challenges faced by students and parents across the nation since the on-set of the pandemic, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute has launched Reagan Academy. This e-learning program will focus on educating the future generation of America in the spirit of President Reagan's strongest attributes: leadership, communication, and informed decision-making. The pandemic shift to remote learning gave parents a first-hand look into what their children were learning – and not learning – in school, and for many, it simply wasn't sufficient. In an effort to combat the widespread learning losses over the last two years, Reagan Academy will teach students soft skills imperative for personal and professional success in conjunction with instilling patriotism in our future generation of leaders. They have also just announced they will be giving away 20 scholarships per week for 6 weeks that give students the option for free access to either Exploring Great Communication or Exploring Leadership courses. As the third week of the Russian invasion approaches, ceasefires and citizen evacuations in Ukraine continue. More than 1.5 million refugees have fled the war-torn country in a matter of 10 days, making this the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. Fox News Radio Foreign Correspondent Simon Owen joins from a refugee site in Poland to describe how Ukrainians are grappling with the prospect of a prolonged war in their country and the uncertainty surrounding when or if they can return to their homes and their lives. The monthly jobs report released by the Labor Department last Friday reported the largest growth since July, adding 678,000 new jobs in the month of February. The statistics paint a promising picture for Americans seeking new employment and higher wages, especially as inflation continues to surge across the economy. John Bussey, associate editor at The Wall Street Journal joins the Rundown to discuss the strengths and nuances of the report, how interest rate hikes will impact Americans, and how small businesses are recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, commentary from Anthony Pennay, former teacher and Chief Learning Officer of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. Learn more about your ad choices.
